I hope we get a Benoit Blanc movie called Massif Mont Blanc, where he travels to a secluded mountain retreat in Switzerland at the behest of the French government to investigate a suspected political assassination. They believe the assassination fled to Switzerland to escape potential extradition, but they have managed through macguffinry to delay the processing of the visiting group's passports by 48 hours. They are hoping Blanc can figure out who is the killer before the clock runs out.

Once there, Blanc continuously feels as if he's seen many of the people at the Chateau, including one particularly suspicious and snarky character played by John Cusack. At the end of the first act there is another murder and Cusack gets Blanc alone to reveal he is Martin Blank, retired assassin last seen in the movie Grosse Point Blank. He wants Blanc to find the new killer and clear his name. Which won't be easy, because at this point Blanc realizes that every guest at the Chateau is a top assassin in their own region.

Now Martin Blank and Benoit Blanc have 24 hours to solve two murders, and every potential suspect shares the one common trait of having gotten away repeatedly with murders by leaving no trace of how it was done.

Know-It-Alls are Lazy Writing

The Know-It-All is a trope in fiction where the Smart Guy of the team becomes a walking encyclopedia. There’s nothing wrong with a character being intelligent, but this character  is almost too knowledgeable. It’s the intellectual equivalent of a soft magic wizard with no limits to their magic. If there’s nothing they can’t fix, then the story loses tension because they can pull any information needed out of thin air, regardless of whether it makes sense for them to know this information or not. Pidge from Voltron Legendary Defender is probably one of the most egregious versions of this trope by the sheer volume of her fields of study. Among her list of know-it-all topics, she can reprogram alien tech she’s never seen before and yet she has to study how to speak Altean, bypass alien technology without having to study it first, she knows how to code programs, speaks fluent binary, can recognize mechanical messages inside organic spores, knows extremely advanced mathemathics and science on par with college level advanced coursework, and she’s 14. Granted yes, Pidge lives in the future. The Voltron Earth is ahead of us technologically. And yes, prodigies and geniuses exist. Except here’s the difference. Most prodigies and geniuses have an area of expertise. One particular field they excel at. If Pidge was just good at physics and like astronomy, that wouldn’t be such an issue. If she was just a hacker, that wouldn’t be such an issue. The issue is that if it’s an intellectual endeavor, Pidge will pull the information out of her butt. Occasionally, they do manage to circumvent this by having Allura and/or Curan be the exposit faucet, but it’s usually Pidge. Now, Voltron is not abysmal. In the later seasons, when introduced to Lotor’s nanny, it’s not Pidge who immediately seeks information, it’s Hunk. And it’s not Pidge who pulls a solution out of her butt. It’s Hunk. Using the information about Galra culture that he took the initiative to learn. And I think this is where Hunk gets under utilized. Hunk is the engineer. He’s a mechanic. If they’d altered it so that Hunk was the hacker tech guy, Hunk would have a more defined role in the group. As the mechanic who does the physical techy stuff, while pidge does physics, makes calculations, and understands the science behind outer space anomolies. But because Pidge does all the hacking, Hunk is just kind of there. Curan needs to fix the warp drive but does the MECHANIC go to help repair it? No, they send the math nerd. Because Pidge hogs all of the intelligence for herself, no one else can really show their own areas of intelligence. Keith’s an ace pilot, he knows the terminology for flight maneuvers. Yet does he ever instruct his teammates to use these maneuvers, or execute attack formations? Of course not because the only kind of intelligence in Voltron is the hard sciences. Nobody uses any other kind of intelligence. And when they do veer into other topics like Altean Alchemy, the specifics of this intellectual field of study are conspicuously absent to the surprise of absolutely nobody.

Velma from the Scooby-Doo franchise is the other egregious example. Scooby-Doo is a series where three friends and a dog fool around while Velma literally solves the entire mystery by herself. More recently, the franchise has tried to flesh out the gang and give them more defined roles. Sure, Fred’s the leader, Shaggy and Scooby are the heart of the team, and Velma solves the mysteries, but what is Daphne’s role? Some have argued that because she’s rich, she bank rolls the gang’s mystery solving. Sometimes she provides the Mystery Machine, other times it’s Shaggy’s van. Daphne has become more of an athlete since Grey Griffin took over her voice role, knowing martial arts, being a surfer, and playing volleyball. Mystery Incorporated expanded on Daphne’s rich upbringing by having her know some things about high culture, such as fashion, art, and cuisine. But even this knowledge was rather shallow, and nothing really seems to stick. Heck, in Be Cool Scooby-Doo, they reduced Daphne to a cloudcoocoolander comic relief character. They can’t seem to figure out what to do with her. Shaggy and Scooby know a bit about food but that’s about it. And Fred knows about traps. Meanwhile Velma is an expert on History, Math, Science, Biology, Linguistics, Coding, Hacking, Robotics, Chemistry, Forensics, and that’s just what I can remember. I mean, in Mystery Incorporated, she pulls the ability to read Mayan or Aztec or Incan (I can’t remember anymore) out of her butt because she took a course on it and boy isn’t that convenient? Frankly, if given a chance to create a series for the franchise, I’d make it so that each member of the gang had an area of expertise so that they can all work together to solve the mysteries as a collective. Have Fred want to be a detective, so he’s studied forensics and criminal psychology to profile suspects. Have Daphne with her theater kid background know about make-up, costumes, and special effects to figure out how they’re pulling off their disguises. Have Shaggy be a loner weirdo conspiracy theorist with a knack for hacking and coding, thus why he’s a coward when confronted with a physical threat, yet remains on a mystery solving team out of a thirst for the truth. Lastly, leave Velma with her nerdy pursuits. Chemistry, engineering, math. This way, Velma’s not robbed of her role as the “team nerd” but it stops feeling like Velma’s the only one pulling her weight on the team. By giving everyone something to do, you make each member feel important to the job, and that the mysteries can’t be solved without each of them contributing. This is the crux of the know-it-all. If one person knows it all, what does the rest of their team know?

Attempt #2, let’s do this. 

Adaptational choices I’m obsessed with: Iris as a trained fighter with a natural Freeze response to threatening men, too real, very good and important to talk about, love the nuance as opposed to the danger prone vs. pro martial artist with no fear dichotomy the Daphne character gets in Scooby Doo properties; Ace having anxiety is wonderful on a representation level AND on a Shaggy character choice level; all the Scooby Doo references from let’s split up to the making of really absurdly tall sandwiches give me life. Every Scooby reference makes me so happy, I love it. I’m still sad there’s no logical way we could see Ruby the dog, though. Also hell yeah so happy Sam is bisexual as well as Sidney, I am here for it. 

Shipping: I’ve been shipping the Fred/Daphne dynamic since I was little and the show only danced around their flirting without confirming it, so when Sam and Iris start actively pairing themselves up to look for clues, cuddle and laugh together a lot, go on picnic dates, protect and comfort each other, and are otherwise adorable and really comfortable together, I kind of can’t help myself. I ship it, damn it. I do wish Sam would prioritize her comfort over the camera more, though. I guess I’m a multishipper, because I also like the Mystery Girls, but they need more scenes together tbh. On a brotp level I am really here for Sam and Ace and Ace and Iris this arc, especially. They’re great. 

Plot: I totally feel for Sidney, she shouldn’t be saddled with all the work when Sam is perfectly capable of doing his own Googling, and she shouldn’t have to feel unsafe in her own home. I also hope the friendships stay intact through this. I also appreciate the highlighting of the unique ways being a woman interacting with men is often really scary, and I hope they shake off their harasser safely, I also sense something more behind Sam and Sidney’s equally intense reactions to each other and frustrations with the mystery thing this arc. Insecurities, personal history as friends, jealousy over Iris? What could they each be dealing with, that makes them so unable to get along? I’m so curious. Also, I initially thought the statues were being taken away by the city and/or the artists for maintenance and repairs, but maybe not? Given the threats, something is up for sure. I love this webseries so much.

Kellen was physically and emotionally abused by his father for the first 16 years of his life. While his mother and siblings also faced Kevin Clark’s wrath, Kellen was the most frequent target. In his father’s eyes, he could never do anything right, and he needed to be punished for it. On top of it, he was also trying to protect his younger brother from facing the same abuse. He was told from a young age that “What happens in this house stays in this house” so he stayed quiet, living in his own personal hell until he was kicked out at age 16. 

Track 2: Problem Child- AC/DC

Ever since he was young, Kellen was considered a “problem child.” He had a hot temper, and caused a lot of trouble in school. He was a class clown and showed no respect for authority figures. Teachers hated him, while his classmates had mixed reviews. His teachers all thought he was just an unruly kid, and never considered that he might be lashing out as a means of coping with his unstable home life. 

Track 3: Rebels- Call Me Karizma

As Kellen grew older, he only became more rebellious. Once he reached high school, he started hanging out with older kids who had no regard for safety or the law. Many of them also came from unstable homes, so he felt fully seen and heard by them. He felt on top of the world when he was raising hell with his friends. Little did he know that it would all come back to bite him in the ass when he was older. 

Track 4: Heroin- The Velvet Underground & Nico (drug use/addiction tw)

Kellen was a sophomore in high school when he tried heroin for the first time. He was addicted from the start, and kept taking more and more hits. He thought that he could fill the void in his heart by getting high and forgetting the world around him. He knew that it wasn’t good for him, but he didn’t seek help. He just kept killing his body more and more while trying to soothe his soul. 

Track 5: The Perfect Drug- Nine Inch Nails (drug use/addiction tw)

Heroin became Kellen’s “perfect” way to cope. He didn’t care how it was affecting his mind or his relationship with others. It made him feel better when nothing else could. Additionally, around the same time, he entered into his first relationship with a girl named Cassie Greene. Being with Cassie, both physically and emotionally, also became addictive for him. Without his vices, Kellen’s world would fall apart. 

Track 6: Father and Daughter- Paul Simon

On April 3, 2010, Cassie gave birth to a daughter, Kelsie Rose Clark. Kellen and Cassie were juniors in high school at the time, but decided to keep the baby girl and raise her together. Despite being young, Kellen loved being a father. He vowed to never be like his father, and to give his child all of the love in the world. He knew as well as anyone that growing up was hard, but he was going to be there to help his daughter at every turn. 

Track 7: Only One- Kanye West & Paul McCartney (incarceration tw)

Kellen’s relationship with Cassie was never a stable one. The two were on-and-off for three years until Kellen was sentenced to six months in jail and Cassie ended things once and for all. At the end of it all, he still had Kelsie. He constantly gives her affirming messages, things that he wished someone had told him as a child. He tells her that she was loved no matter what mistakes she made and that she would grow up to be something special.

Track 8: Don’t Look At Me- POORSTACY (drug use/addiction tw)

Kellen spent his early 20′s in and out of sobriety. As much as he wanted to get clean for his daughter, he couldn’t handle the overwhelming dread that filled him up when he was sober. Withdrawing from heroin made Kellen incredibly antsy and paranoid. He didn’t want to be left alone, but at the same time, he hated people seeing him how he was. This song is an expression of Kellen’s fragile mental state during his periods of sobriety. 

Track 9: Delete Forever- Grimes (death tw, overdose tw)

Kellen’s high school best friend, Sidney, was also addicted to heroin. In July 2018, Sidney died from an overdose. This is when Kellen realized how dire the consequences of his actions were. He had been trying to escape the pain of his upbringing for so long that he pushed the risks of drug use to the back of his mind up until this moment. Sidney’s death was what made Kellen decide to give up heroin for good. Not only had it taken his best friend away from him, but it also had the potential to leave Kelsie without a father, a fate he didn’t want to see actualized. 

Track 10: don’t worry, you will- lovelytheband

Kellen met Gracie Rothschild shortly after the loss of his best friend. Despite the fact that the couldn’t be more different from one another, the two ended up dating after six months of getting to know each other. The relationship couldn’t have been more perfect in the beginning. For the first time ever, Kellen had some stability in his life. This song reflects Kellen’s fears that Gracie would one day find something she didn’t like about him-- whether it be his criminal record or his past drug use-- and break up with him because of it. Eventually, this proved to be true, but not for the reasons he thought. 

Track 11: Daphne Blue- The Band CAMINO

In the end, Kellen’s past caught up with him and Gracie broke up with him after a year and a half of dating. The fact that he hid the truth from her is what put the nail in the coffin for their relationship. Going about his daily life became difficult after the breakup, as he was constantly reminded of Gracie and how he messed up. He hated how much he was constantly reminded of her, and running into her in public only made it worse. He didn’t want to be strangers, he didn’t want to be friends. He wanted-- and still wants-- to be her lover. 

Track 12: Someone Saved My Life Tonight- Elton John (overdose tw)

After a six-month period of binge-drinking and smoking, Kellen did what he vowed to never do again: he relapsed on heroin. He purchased the drug from his former dealer after running into him at a bar during a moment of weakness. After two and a half years of not taking the drug, his tolerance wasn’t what it used to be, which resulted in him taking too much and overdosing. In a stroke of luck, his roommate, Vito, came home from a date with his girlfriend and was able to call 911 just in time to save him. After Vito literally saved his life, Kellen realized that if he was ever going to fully heal and live a normal life, he needed to further preserve his life by going to rehab and starting therapy. 

Track 13: Not Warriors- Waterparks

After getting out of rehab, Kellen and Gracie started on the path towards repairing their relationship. The process has been a rollercoaster, but the one thing he knows for certain is that he’s still in love with her. As a sober man, his feelings for her only feel stronger. For now, all he can do is show her that he cares and that he wants to make things work.

Kellen’s perception of love was warped by the abuse he faced as a child. All he knew of love as a child was that it hurt, physically and emotionally. As he grew older, he found love through his friends, his daughter, and his exes. However, Kellen never learned how to love himself. He tries his best to show affection towards his loved ones, but without loving and caring for himself, he can never really give them 100%. He’s trying to love himself and grow from his mistakes, but he still has a long way to go.

Staying sober has been difficult for Kellen. Since exiting rehab, he hasn’t touched heroin, marijuana, or alcohol. However, the cravings have still been there. Before his heroin relapse, he was trying to numb his emotions with alcohol and weed. Now, he feels every emotion at full force. He often wonders if staying sober is worth it, but he knows he needs to for his own wellbeing.
