Oh hey since you just reblogged a post about this, can I get some tech advice? I have two old Dell laptops that are running slow bc (I suspect) dell has some chip installed that can tell if the charger is Dell brand and throttles the cpu if not. And they have since stopped recognizing their chargers. If I install linux, will that fix the issue? Or is it a hardware problem?
So there's not really a way that Dell can do that but realistically the computers are probably just running slow because they're old (5 years is the usable time we estimate for business laptops; after that they may continue *working* but they'll likely be too slow for our customers to consider them good work computers without some significant upgrades). But if they aren't recognizing the chargers there are 3 possibilities I can think of off the top of my head:
1 - It's a battery issue, not a charger issue. Over time batteries fail and will stop holding a charge no matter how long they're plugged in. The solution to this is to replace the battery, which you can usually do for between 20-45USD on amazon
2 - It's a charger issue. Your AC adapters may have both independently failed, it's possible! Low-cost non-OEM chargers often don't have particularly long lifespans, and replacing them may be the way to fix this.
Second possible charger issue is that it may be the wrong power level for the batteries. Sometimes you might look up something like "Lenovo e15 charger" and you'll see one that looks right but it turns out you've ordered a 45w instead of a 90w, and that is a pretty big problem. You need to make sure you're getting something with the exact specs for your specific computer. Here's an article about it. 
3 - It's a charging port issue. This is one of the more common problems we see on older computers; basically over time with enough plugging and unplugging the port that connects your charger to the motherboard comes loose. This is something that can be a relatively cheap and easy fix in some cases, or a really difficult fix if the thing is soldered directly to the board. Here's a video of someone replacing the charging port on a Dell Laptop for a general idea of what kind of work might be involved in fixing this.
Okay! Now for some basic troubleshooting! Please test for the following:
If the computers don't power on at all while the AC adapter is plugged in then the issue is either the AC adapter or the power port.
If the computers power on while plugged in but they don't hold a charge, the issue is the battery.
If the battery holds a charge for some amount of time (over an hour) but takes forever to charge, then the problem is that you aren't using the correct AC adapter.
If the battery doesn't charge, the computer doesn't come on, and it's the correct AC adapter you can possibly test the adapter with a voltmeter, test the adapter on another computer with the same power requirements, or disassemble the computer and check the power port connection to the motherboard.
But yeah if the computers are powering on at all, right off the top of my head I'd guess either it's a battery issue or a voltage issue with the adapter.
Linux would not help at all with those issues (though hopefully you've got someplace to start looking to resolve those problems now), but if your computer is running slow because it has older hardware that was designed for a different era of computer use (which can be as recent as 5 or so years ago depending on the specs) then a Linux install will likely help. Though keep in mind that if you do an OS swap you will not be able to run any of the programs you currently have for those laptops on those laptops. I think that Linux is good and want more people to use it generally, but I recommend Linux to new Linux users primarily when the computer they're thinking of installing it on is used mostly as a web browsing machine. An old computer with Linux Lite will generally run faster than an old computer with Windows, but if you're trying to get the old computer to play modern games it isn't going to be fast with either OS.

Hey, stupid question real quick. Noticed a pattern that a lot of Clan guns tend to be Ultra Autocannons, LB-X series guns, Streak and Artemis systems and all the nonsense that comes after that, none of which can mount specialty ammo in the first place, or after they've had a new tracking system put into place.
Is there some kinda Clan vendetta against alternate ammo types? No armor piercing ammo, swarm lrms, Tandem-charge warheads, Nemesis pods, no fun stuff?
Just curious.
It comes down to three things: Clan culture, the timeline of most specialty ammo development, and the march of technological progress.
Clan martial culture is built around duels. In a duel, doing as much damage to the opponent as quickly as possible is always going to be the most efficient way to win (and the Clans despite wastefulness...). So you either fill the air with more bullets (Ultra and LBX) or make the projectiles more accurate (Streak/Artemis) to get more hits and take out your opponent faster.
Second up, most autocannon specialty ammo was developed AFTER the Clan Invasion. The two kinds that weren't (Tracer and Flak) fell out of favor for various reasons. For Tracer, its because modern small caliber ACs already load tracers in their belts (at a 1:50 ratio) so loading EVERY shot with tracers is reduntant and only useful in certain situations. With larger caliber ACs, they generally fire single shots, and so each round will have tracer components - not to mention the incredibly sophisticated computerized targeting systems on BattleMechs generally rendering tracers into a backup technology anyway. Flak ammo for standard ACs was rendered obselete by the invention of the LB-X autocannon in 2595. All other noted ammo types for autocannons were developed post-Clan Invasion.
With missile weapons, there are more ammo types developed prior to the Exodus. Follow the Leader LRMs, Fragmentation LRMs, Heat Seeking SRMs/LRMs, Incendiary LRMs, Inferno SRMs, Smoke ammunition, Swarm LRMs, Tandem-Charge SRMs, and Tear Gas SRMs were all deceloped prior to the Exodus and the know how to build them went with the Clans. And indeed, the modern Clans can indeed produce all of these munitions - with the exception of two types, Incendiary LRMs and Tear Gas SRMs. The absence of both can be explained: Incendiary LRMs likely fell out of favor for two reasons: one, because of "the widespread destruction the rampant fires [produced by the warheads] would cause" - the Clans would see the setting of uncontrollable fires and thus the risk of massive potential infrastructure damage as highly wasteful. The second reason is because unlike Inferno SRMs (which the Clans do still produce) Incendiary LRMs are noted to "not [be] any more effective against armor due to chemicals simply sliding off, [they] do not affect a target's heat level, and reduce the launchers effectiveness".
Tear Gas SRMs fell out of favor simply because the Clan society is such that any civil unrest that escalates to the deployment of military grade weapons will not be put down in a "humane" manner. They're not needed because there's no steps on the Clan conflict escalation ladder where anyone in charge would think of non-lethal methods of dispersing the unrest. The Avenger fully automatic shotgun is a primary Clan riot suppression tool, after all...
Now, having said all that, here's the kicker as regards specialty missile ammo and the Clans. As far as I and my friends can tell, there is nothing in the rules that says a Clan LRM/SRM launcher with Artemis IV/V cannot take specialist ammunition.
When you think about it, it's very logical. The Artemis system itself is expressly an ADD-ON system to a standard launcher, and standard launchers can take alternate ammo (which we've established the Clans as having and being able to produce). It's just that they don't get the BENEFIT of that Artemis system because they don't have the same tracking systems installed (this is why Artemis-capable ammunition is listed as a separate ammo type in MML - you have to load the special ammo that works with the Artemis to get the benefits). In MML, nothing stops you from loading specialty ammo into an Artemis equipped missile launcher, IS or Clan.
Now, you are (mostly) correct about Streak Launchers - as those incorporate the new tracking system into the launcher itself, and due to the nature of how that tracking works, Streak launchers can't take alternate ammo. Well, standard Streak launchers can't. But there is a Streak launcher type that can.

Troubleshooting & repair of an old camcorder as a distraction from some life stuff: installment 1
So a close friend gifted me some broken old camcorder that doesn't work anymore because their mom was like "do you know anyone who would want this garbage" and they rightfully said "yes" and shipped it to me.

Don't yell at me about testing electronics on carpet, the actual electronic things are on a rubber mat, and also nothing is plugged in right now, I am grounded when I work on it, and also yeah ok I have terrible habits too bad.
Camcorder in question: Canon ES8400V 8mm VIDEO CAMCORDER
Symptoms: doesn't turn on at all. However, this could just be because the AC adapter that's supposed to charge it is dead. I'm hoping that's the case because that's a way easier fix than the camcorder itself.
Steps to troubleshoot:
Well in an ideal world I would have a different AC adapter to try and hook it up to. The manufacturer one has an output of 8.4V 1.5A and I don't seem to have anything remotely close to that lying around. Like the connector looks proprietary but I could pretty easily just solder the connector to a different one just to prove that it works, but I didn't have anything like that.
Next up was of course to open it up because I like opening things up. I wanted to look for any obvious signs of like blown capacitors or broken solder joints or whatever. Really obvious physical issues.
Nothing like that showed up, it looks very normal on the inside and there weren't any obvious symptoms of which parts may have failed over the years. That very obviously does not mean it still works but sometimes you can open something and immediately spot the problem, not the case here though.
But here's a picture just because it's always fun to see what the insides of things look like.

So I finally bought a multimeter which is something that I probably should have done a million years ago. I bought the cheapest crappiest one from home depot. Any electrician on Reddit would probably go off for five paragraphs about how terrible this multimeter is. For my janky DIY purposes, I can't really be fucked to spend more when this one probably works fine for what I'm doing.
Anyway I plugged the adapter back in and hooked up my multimeter and it read... 5V.
Decidedly not 8.4V or remotely close. My hunch is that this is the problem, it's literally impossible to charge this thing on the adapter I was given so for all we know the camcorder itself works fine.
The #safe and recommended thing to do at this point would be to buy another AC adapter at the given rating, but that's boring and I want to learn more about circuit boards so I want to see if I can at least learn to figure out what failed components may be the problem here. Which means my next step is actually going to be a lot of research and learning.

(If it turns out that the camcorder works fine and all I have to fix here is the AC adapter don't worry I still get to try and fix a camcorder later because I have a different old camcorder that has an audio issue I'd like to troubleshoot. But that's for another day)
