Louise Nevelson’s Big Black (1963)
Her dark materials meet and merge, without entirely merging. Theirs is a materialization far removed from the “purity” of Greenberg’s truth of (or to) materials, not at all materials for materials’ sake, nor materialization for materialization’s. No, it’s some other/stranger sake that these materializations are for, or in favor of. Hers are assemblies that are matter but threaten not to [matter]; matter forever on the verge of not mattering (in a way that, say, Cornelia Parker’s matter never nears not mattering). Forms not unlike no-nonsense choirs, twisting their own silence into songs more parched than music could manage. Plato’s realm of pure forms after a celestial accident, smoke-smudged but not unlovely.
