Power of Pattern: Central Asian Ikats from the David and Elizabeth Reisbord Collection                                                                                                                
Now through July 28th, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has over 60 examples of Central Asian ikat robes and panels on display. Ikat is a textile made by dying silk threads in patterns along their lengths and then weaving them in order to create patterns by having the colors repeat or contrast in the finished textiles. The 19th and early 20th centuries saw a renaissance in the technique and the blurred patterns that resulted were called abrbandi  or cloud binding. This exhibition is organized by the various motifs developed and looks at examines how people in Central Asia, whether textile designers, dyers, and weavers, improvised to create this colorful and compelling designs.
