I've read that one of the marks of a good hostess during that time was knowing if a couple needed one room or two and if one of them will need a room close to someone else's for .... reasons

It’s interesting that the higher one went in society, the more flexible the morals of the time became, particularly with regards to marriage vows. Men, of course, fucked around on the regular, but aristocratic women could and did have fairly brazen affairs. Now Austen largely focuses on the genteel classes, which were mostly untitled, though could easily be connected to titles, but their adherence to at least the appearance of ‘virtue’ was much stricter than among lords and ladies. When marriages at a certain level of society were much likely to be less about affection or even attraction and more about uniting particular fortunes or bloodlines, people might have a great deal more sympathy and understanding for liaisons sought outside of marriage--especially when several of one’s friends and acquaintances might be doing so, as well. Once an heir with at least the appearance of legitimacy could be provided, there was little reason for couples to keep up any pretense, particularly between themselves. Whether husbands and wives employed deception (or discretion) or were open with one another about their affairs, when divorce was expensive, rare, and scandalous, many marriages at all levels of society were about far more than romance or intimacy, which leaves a great deal of grey area where, today, we take a harsher view on adultery where modern partners have the opportunity to safely end one relationship before beginning another.
