I still find it so cute that in the original Blade 2 script, Scud only did all that shit because he was jealous of Blade paying more attention to Whistler than him

It took me longer than I'll admit as a teen to realise that Whistler from Blade and the man who sang the cowboy songs I grew up with were the same guy

Wat? Riviergezicht met het beurtschip de Zwaan bij Groothoofdspoort (1824) door Martinus Schouman, Zeilschepen bij Dordrecht (1870), Gezicht op Dordrecht (1870) en Le Port de Dordrecht (1869) door Johan Barthold Jongkind, Voorstraathaven te Dordrecht (1884), De Maas bij Dordrecht (1884) en La Place Ary Scheffer (1884) door Eugène Boudin, Molens bij Dordrecht (1871) door Charles-François Daubigny, Boten, Dordrecht (1884) door James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Aan de Noordendijk, Dordrecht (Molen ‘De Nachtegaal’) (1903 of 1907?) door Tina Blau, Oud Dordrecht (’t Oude Huis) (1876) door Jacob Maris, Gezicht op Dordrecht met het Trippenhuis (ca. 1662) door Allaert van Everdingen en Het straatje (Vrieseweg, Dordrecht) (?) door Abraham van Strij
Waar? Tentoonstelling Schilderachtig Dordrecht in Dordrechts Museum, Dordrecht
Wanneer? 5 april 2025
Dordrecht
Top Naeff, 1932

Me and @airlocksandaviaries watched Blade yesterday and all I have 2 say is that this man Does Not get enough love or attention.
So in the interim of me finding intelligent things to say about how well crafted the movie was, I bring u… some headcanons for mister Eric “Blade” Brooks:
His favorite food is mackerel over rice with green beans
He strikes me as the kind of man who would enjoy the experience of chewing on jerky
Blade likes jazz and can tell you the difference between its subgenres. Will he ever give you the opportunity for it to come up? Probably not
This man has 100% practiced his dramatic timing. He thinks it’s fun and he’s ecstatic every time he nails it. It’s VERY important to him, actually.
He prefers not to be called Eric. It’s something he keeps for himself, one last piece of that life he never got to have. It’s a gift from his mother; that’s how he chooses to remember her. You don’t get it if you haven’t earned it, and most people just /haven’t/.
Whistler took him to train under several master hunters— it was the best way to bring him into their world and use him with maximum efficiency. One of the regimens entailed resisting torture tactics. Whistler was there with him, narrating the lesson: “Can’t help the pain, ‘cause if ya bleed ya hurt. But the suffering? You gotta master that. Vampires get even a whiff and its chum in the water, you’ll get eaten alive. Don’t let a fuckin’ suckhead see you suffer.” He’s internalized that message, and you can see it when he laughs in the face of Frost and his clique.
Speaking of Blade and how he bears up under pain: The man is capital R Repressed. If he feels an emotion his instinct is to Channel it into something else. That’s how he was raised— and it’s part of the struggle he has with himself. Suppressing the bloodlust relied upon building the willpower within himself to resist a starvation of his nature. Anger becomes precision, sadness becomes anger, doubt becomes calculation. It’s all about discipline for him. He treats his hunger and his doubts as one and the same.
His blade is based on a jian/chinese longsword, and it was given to him as a gift. Like a rite of initiation.
I think that deep down when Karen offered him the serum to suppress his vampirism and live as human that he was scared, that there wouldn’t be an identity for him in being human, living outside of this war he’s fighting. He didn’t like what he was, but for him it’s all he has. He didn’t feel like he knew how to be human, so he didn’t try.

Do the baby rats ever return to the bilges? And by that do they spend much time with the old man? Are they free to drop in and make themselves at home?
I think it varies between them and over time.
Alfred drops in a lot. God knows there's hardly a spot in the world he hasn't made himself known but I still couldn't quite believe how many statues and memorials. The eagle squadron, the Eisenhower statue, the Reagan statue, the 9/11 memorial garden. Mark Twain, James McNeil Whistler, Harry Selfridge, FDR, Abraham Lincoln. Like goddamn I'm not sure why I was surprised but whoo. So many statues of Yanks paid for by the British.
Anyway: In the 19th century he'd actually spent time in England indulging his need for the latest technology and satiating whatever advances François or Gilbert wouldn't keep him abreast of. Nowadays, especially since the age of flight, he travels a lot and has no shame in rolling up, insulting the food but savoring the whiskey, crashing wherever he likes and drunkenly asking his father's advice. He's very free in how much space he takes up and how much time he feels entitled too. If he's jet lagged he'll just conk out on the old man's spare room and complain it smells like sheep but very much appreciate a night's sleep in a place he once called home.
Matt... He should be very comfortable in that space but he's a dipshit so imposing feels illegal. He kind of knows he can but he's also not willing to test his luck the vast majority of the time. If he's invited he'll show up on time, clean up after himself and promptly leave without causing a fuss. At least the cat's happy he's back to visit lmao. He got permission to pay for a wee fountain in the green park memorial. There was a gate we bought when Victoria locked it and we were still first dominion (Australia was still in the process of confederating.) But yeah he's welcome? Arthur doesn't mind him around if he's not underfoot. But it really was kind of a sign Jan had no idea what Matt's life was like anymore when he asked him to go stay at his dad's in the aftermath of their break up.
Jack lmao he's shameless when he wants some of the old man's attention. I don't think it's all the time, but there are a lot of links there. I swear to God I met so many Australians in England. I tumbled out of a test pit off a corner off a Hadrian's wall fortlet and there were like 6 Australians in every pub in fricken Yorkshire. He will just kind of show up with a very casual but somehow kind of prickly invitation to go to a cultural event of his artists or bands in England and the old fart isn't objecting. It took Arthur a minute to figure out that "Accadacca" meant they were going to go see AC/DC but he wasn't mad about it! Two manic fucks can have a lot of fun. They party quite hard sometimes. Jack was also very responsible for the old man's cooking improving by a metric and imperial fuck tonne. The espresso machine under the cabinet is his baby.
Zee I think is the easiest. She's as independent as Jack but that not quite dead idea that daughters are kind of allowed to be more in and out of the house makes it slightly easier for them. She rolls up and flops on the sofa demanding to be fed and watered. A full fifth of the NZ population lives overseas with Australia and the UK topping the list and if there's things she can't really do in New Zealand or she just doesn't want to live alone she'll just hop over. I feel like she goes in cycles of how independent and revolutionary she's feeling and will just kind of make herself at home if she wants another degree or something similar. She spent time in London without the old man too especially during the peak punk years and they ran into each other at a sex pistols concert. She had a full set of tattoos, an undercut and half a blunt in her system, Arthur had green hair and absolutely ripped on god knows what. She's never seen him so panicked. They stumbled home together having a hoot and throwing beer bottles at cops. Grade a hooligans, those two.

This is a selection of selfportraits from a series I made in 2011-2016. They're made with colour pencils on paper. In them I placed myself into various existing paintings and artworks. The series progresses from a fully finished drawing to the least finished drawing. The title of each work in the series is a female name (in lower case) and a body part. The body part in the title is always obscured in the image or not in the frame at all. Out of the fifteen portaits five are full body format, five are half figure and five are shoulders and up. Several of the works have very Mormon themes, and those are the ones I wanted to lift up here.
You can see the whole series on https://inariporkka.tumblr.com/portraits at the bottom of the page. That might not work on Tumblr app, might need to look at it on a browser.

agnes (arms)
The name comes from the Latin term Agnus Dei, the Lamb of God. The painting inspiration is Zurbaran, specifically his Agnus Dei and his Saint Francis. The arms of the figure are obscured by the lamb she carries. It is ambiguous whether she is sacrificing the lamb or rescuing it. There is a possible indication of female priestesshood going on here. The background is a reference to an abstract artist whose name escapes me. I can't remember what I was going for there with the chalk on blackboard look - unfinished plans, maybe?

josephine (knees)
The name comes from Joseph Smith of course, and the main reference painting is of course that famous one of the First Vision. The other reference is this Renaissance trend of making religious paintings and inserting the donor of the painting into the scene. Like there are paintings of like Bible scenes like the crucifixion or Mary holding Baby Jesus and then some Renaissance guy in there too with them. So I put myself into the First Vision, like a donor. The figure is reading while kneeling behind a little... prayer box thingy that was in the original painting too, with the knees obscured. The idea there is that by reading other people's accounts of their experiences (such as Joseph Smith's First Vision) is like being there.

maria (shoulder)
The name is obviously a reference to Virgin Mary and the painting reference is to like early Renaissance/late Middle Ages iconography. Shoulders are hidden from view on one side by the veil and on the other by the baby leaning on the shoulder.

anna (loins)
I must admit I can't remember what the name is in reference to. But the painting is Whistler's Mother. I've drawn myself in place of the old lady in the original, my late dog is on the floor, and on the wall is my temple sealing diploma. On the left there is a white cloth - a curtain or the veil? The vibe is temple-y: either waiting to pass through the veil or having done it.

eva (nose)
The name refers to Eve. The nudity and the lush jungle all around (borrowed from Rousseau) suggest it's pre-Fall. Nose is hidden from view by the flower she sniffs. Since Mormons have a pretty different view of Eve compared to other Christians, it's kind of focused on just who she was, rather than eating of the fruit or any of those central story beats.

sara (neck)
The name refers to Sarah, the wife of Abraham. This is the most unfinished drawing in the series. To me it's about exaltation (hence the crown) and not being reasy for it yet. This one is also the first one in the entire series, so it follows the system the least - for example it's not as such a remix of a particular painting, just inspired by Botticelli in general, like the hair, really.

BLADE (1998) "Yo, I didn't remember this being a comedy. Back in the day, I watched it spellbound on the bauer-stained sofa at Sugtown. A Marvel comic... but a movie! With house music, fellatio, and four letter words. But what I didn't remember was that Blade strikes dramatic poses with the naturalism of a DRAG RACE contestant. SDorff, the Dollar General Ethan Hawke wants to attract a hip and young new demographic to vampirism. KrisKris adds a hammered-shit gravitas as Abraham Whistler, whose name' was's been lodged in my mind since '98. Should we watch BLADE 2 now? Matt Gazelle says def." -Sonny Gazelle
"Man I considered BLADE a comedy pretty quickly. An EXCELLENT comedy. From the minute my goddess TraLo lures a dork to the blood-rave to the weird doofy 'Nice Shot!' Quip from Dorf, it inspires real laughs. My favorite, however, is when Blade kicks this one vampire over and over again and then stops, screams, and kicks him in his vampire nuts so hard he lifts off the ground. Wesley Snipes, man...I had season tickets to him for like solid decade. No one had more fun. Blade? Simon Phoenix? He's basically #1 in the queue for a Tarantino revival. I feel like Marvel movies actually peaked here and steadily declined aside from maybe the first Iron Man." -Tommy Gazelle

The Passing of an Icon: Kris Kristofferson's Legacy and Influence on the Boomer Generation
On September 28, 2024, the world of music lost a legend. Kris Kristofferson, the iconic singer-songwriter, actor, and Rhodes Scholar, passed away at the age of 87, leaving behind an extraordinary musical and cultural legacy that deeply resonated with the baby boomer generation. Kristofferson's music, characterized by its raw honesty, poetic lyrics, and social consciousness, captured the spirit of an era marked by social and political upheaval, and his songs became anthems for a generation seeking change. For many, his portrayal of the grizzled vampire hunter Abraham Whistler in the "Blade" film series further cemented his iconic status, showcasing his versatility and ability to connect with audiences across different mediums.
Born in Brownsville, Texas, in 1936, Kristofferson's life was a tapestry woven with diverse threads. A Golden Gloves boxer, a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army, a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, and a janitor at Columbia Records, Kristofferson’s path was anything but conventional. It was his songwriting, however, that catapulted him to fame, and his songs quickly became synonymous with the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
Kristofferson’s music, with its blend of country, folk, and rock, spoke to the hearts and minds of the baby boomers, a generation coming of age during a time of great social and political change. His songs, such as "Me and Bobby McGee," "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," and "Help Me Make It Through the Night," tackled themes of love, loss, social injustice, and the human condition with a raw honesty and vulnerability that resonated deeply with his audience.
The Voice of a Generation
Kristofferson's lyrics, infused with poetic imagery and social commentary, reflected the hopes, dreams, and struggles of a generation grappling with the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, and the changing social landscape. His music provided a voice to those who felt marginalized and disenfranchised, and his songs became anthems for a generation seeking change.
The song "Me and Bobby McGee," made famous by Janis Joplin's rendition, is a poignant tale of love and loss on the open road, capturing the spirit of freedom and wanderlust that characterized the counterculture movement. "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," a melancholic ballad about loneliness and despair, spoke to the disillusionment and alienation felt by many during this turbulent era. "Help Me Make It Through the Night," a tender plea for love and comfort, resonated with those seeking solace in the face of adversity.
Kristofferson's music was not only embraced by the baby boomers but also by renowned artists across various genres. His songs were covered by a multitude of musicians, including Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan, further cementing his influence on the music landscape.
