Il piano orientale Zeina Abrached Ed. Bao Publishing, 2016

Daughter to heir of the Clann Iain Abrach, she was born of the peace treaty between the Glenlyons and MacDonalds, raised to be loyal to her families and not necessarily the crown that threatened to take all their lands. Just like every Donald that came before her, Effie’s youth was spent finding purpose in the clan and she eventually found her place as a shield-maiden much to the chagrin of her loyalist mother. Valiantly fighting beside her father and uncle in the Williamite War, their smaller though notably influential clan refused to sign allegiance to the English king. Of course, that only made them a target to be felled by a late night raid that would later be known as the Massacre of Glencoe. Managing to escape with her uncle as her father laid down his life to ensure their safety, the clan was scattered into pieces from the defeat, fading into obscurity for a time. Vowing revenge of the fallen, she was the first to swear allegiance to her uncle and ensured his rise to becoming the clan’s next chief, where she first decided to utilize her innate abilities to influence the others into reforming even stronger than before as well as turn the tables in battle as needed to increase morale. It was only a matter of time, though, that her uncle would find out her true power and declare her a witch in spite of everything she’d done for him

After some time wandering and carefully listening in on whispers of rumors, she eventually found the steps of Loire Valley’s Academy for Women and someone else to swear her life to; the headmistress and her coven. A venerable practitioner of the arts herself, she was a welcomed addition to the staff as both groundskeeper and instructor in defensive magic. To this day though, Effie feels the heavy burden of failing her lost comrades and then losing control of her lofty post for she was one of watchers patrolling that evening, her negligence costing her then-lover and fellow shield-maiden’s life.

Clint Eastwood’s “Letters from Iwo Jima” (2006)
“And since my last post was Million Dollar Baby, allow me to follow up with another of Clint Eastwood’s masterpieces, Letters from Iwo Jima, a second World War epic uniquely told from the point of view of the Japanese. Ken Watanabe delivers a towering performance, worthy in my opinion of an Oscar.” - J. Abrache.
Summary: “The story of the battle of Iwo Jima between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II, as told from the perspective of the Japanese who fought it.“ - imdb.com.
Letters from Iwo Jima’s imdb.com page, with reviews and trailers:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0498380
“
The opening moments of "Letters" have a cosmic zoom-like effect, taking us from the timeless and abstract (stars/sand) into a specific place and time: "Iwo Jima 2005," as a title denotes. It was on this barren little sulfuric spec in the Pacific Ocean, only about five miles from one end to the other, that so many people fought and died 60 years ago.
” - Roger Ebert.

Clint Eastwood’s “Million Dollar Baby” (2004)
“It has been a long time since my latest review, but I am back with an authentic treat: Clint Eastwood’s marvelous Million Dollar Baby. The film rests on the shoulders of Hilary Swank, who delivers her best acting performance, and those of Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood. The latter’s masterful direction of the movie is another reason why I consider him a living American legend.” - J. Abrache.
Summary: “A determined woman works with a hardened boxing trainer to become a professional.“ - imdb.com.
Million Dollar Baby’s imdb.com page, with reviews and trailers:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405159
“
Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby" is a masterpiece, pure and simple, deep and true. It tells the story of an aging fight trainer and a hillbilly girl who thinks she can be a boxer. It is narrated by a former boxer who is the trainer's best friend. But it's not a boxing movie. It is a movie about a boxer. What else it is, all it is, how deep it goes, what emotional power it contains, I cannot suggest in this review, because I will not spoil the experience of following this story into the deepest secrets of life and death. This is the best film of the year.
” - Roger Ebert.

Oliver Stone’s “Platoon” (1986)
“Here is Oliver Stone’s mid-80â€Čs landmark movie, Platoon. It ranks up there with Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter in a trio of masterpieces documenting America’s rout in Vietnam, with each film providing its unique take and perspective. A stunning lesson of cinema from a master movie maker.” - J. Abrache.
Summary: “A young soldier in Vietnam faces a moral crisis when confronted with the horrors of war and the duality of man.“ - imdb.com.
Platoon’s imdb.com page, with reviews and trailers:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091763
“
The Vietnam War is the central moral and political issue of the last quarter-century, for Americans. It has inspired some of the greatest recent American films: "Apocalypse Now," "The Deer Hunter," "Coming Home," "The Killing Fields." Now here is the film that, in a curious way, should have been made before any of the others. A film that says - as the Vietnam Memorial in Washington says - that before you can make any vast, sweeping statements about Vietnam, you have to begin by understanding the bottom line, which is that a lot of people went over there and got killed, dead, and that is what the war meant for them.
” - Roger Ebert.

Quentin Tarentino’s “Pulp Fiction” (1994)
“... And no serious collection of great film and film makers should ignore Quentin Tarentino. Here is for me the highlight of his considerable output, a movie that did not loose an ounce of its glittering sparkle after more than 25 years of its release. Pulp Fiction was one of the most innovative films of the 1990s and remained a model to follow for would-be directors since then.” - J. Abrache.
Summary: “The lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.“ - imdb.com.
Pulp Fiction’s imdb.com page, with reviews and trailers:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110912
“
Tarantino is too gifted a filmmaker to make a boring movie, but he could possibly make a bad one: Like Edward D. Wood Jr., proclaimed the Worst Director of All Time, he's in love with every shot - intoxicated with the very act of making a movie. It's that very lack of caution and introspection that makes "Pulp Fiction" crackle like an ozone generator: Here's a director who's been let loose inside the toy store, and wants to play all night.

James Cameron’s “Titanic” (1997)
“No serious collection of great films could be complete without Titanic. So here it is, shiny and glorious. James Cameron’s masterpiece is a marvel of movie making, a spellbinding motion picture of epic scale. DiCaprio and Winslet deliver one of the best perfomances of the earlier part of their distinguished careers. If for some mysterious reason you have not enjoyed the movie yet, this is my wake-up call to you. You are welcome!” - J. Abrache.
Summary: “A seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.“ - imdb.com.
Titanic’s imdb.com page, with reviews and trailers:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120338
“
James Cameron's 194-minute, $200 million film of the tragic voyage is in the tradition of the great Hollywood epics. It is flawlessly crafted, intelligently constructed, strongly acted and spellbinding. If its story stays well within the traditional formulas for such pictures, well, you don't choose the most expensive film ever made as your opportunity to reinvent the wheel.

Stephen Gaghan’s “Syriana” (2005)
“Syriana is a multi-layered, complex, and sophisticated tale of the oil industry geopolitics. Despite its complexity and the need to re-watch it once or twice before fully understanding the whole thing, the first watching session will still provide plenty of satisfaction to the most demanding viewers. George Clooney delivers here what I believe is his best role. The other characters do not disappoint either.” - J. Abrache.
Summary: “A politically charged epic about the state of the oil industry in the hands of those personally involved in and affected by it.“ - imdb.com.
Syriana’s imdb.com page, with reviews and trailers:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365737
“
"Syriana" is an endlessly fascinating movie about oil and money, America and China, traders and spies, the Gulf States and Texas, reform and revenge, bribery and betrayal. Its interlocking stories come down to one thing: There is less oil than the world requires, and that will make some people rich and others dead. The movie seems to take sides, but take a step back and look again. It finds all of the players in the oil game corrupt and compromised, and even provides a brilliant speech in defense of corruption, by a Texas oilman (Tim Blake Nelson). This isn't about Left and Right but about Have and Have Not. ...” - Roger Ebert.

Zhang Yimou’s “Raise the Red Lantern” (1991)
“There is no excuse for anyone remotely interested in Chinese cinema, history, and culture not to watch and re-watch Zhang Yimou’s masterpiece. A beautiful depiction of the system of concubines and the condition of women in China in the beginning of the 20th century. This landmark movie has everything: voluptuous beauty of the pictures and the colors, and engaging story told simply, virtuoso direction from Yimou, and nuanced acting from all involved, with special mention going to Gong Li’s extraordinary performance.” - J. Abrache.
Summary: “A young woman becomes the fourth wife of a wealthy lord, and must learn to live with the strict rules and tensions within the household.“ - imdb.com.
Raise the Red Lantern’s imdb.com page, with reviews and trailers:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101640
“
Zhang Yimou (born 1951) is a member of the "Fifth Generation" of Chinese filmmakers, those who began working after the Cultural Revolution and dealt with Chinese society in a more open and artistic away than was permitted at the height of Maoism. Not all of the generation's films were approved by Chinese authorities for wide domestic release, but they were a valuable source of foreign exchange and found world audiences; "Raise the Red Lantern" tied for the Silver Lion at Venice and was nominated for an Oscar. He followed it with "To Live" (1994), also starring Gong Li, in the story of an obsessive gambler who loses everything and then makes an extraordinary wartime comeback. After the success of "Qui Ju," "Ju Dou," "To Live" and this film, all with Zhang Yimou, Gong Li worked for Chen Kaige, another Fifth Generation member, in the extraordinary "Farewell My Concubine" (1993). Few actresses have such an artistic accomplishment in such a short time.
If the directors and actors of that burst of creativity have never quite equaled it since, perhaps it is because they were originally inspired by the long frustration they experienced before China's arts began to open up. "Raise the Red Lantern" is told so directly and beautifully, with such confidence, with so little evidence of compromise. It is the product of a time when the new Chinese film industry could support such work, but had not yet learned to meddle with it.” - Roger Ebert.

Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” (2000)
“Since my previous post was about The Matrix, allow me please to suggest a (much) better treat: Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. This is a unique film where action is elevated to the status of art and poetry. Whether you like martial arts or not is simply irrelevant with CTHD; do yourself a favor and just watch it.” - J. Abrache.
Summary: “A young Chinese warrior steals a sword from a famed swordsman and then escapes into a world of romantic adventure with a mysterious man in the frontier of the nation.“ - imdb.com.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’s imdb.com page, with reviews and trailers:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0190332
“
There are those, I know, who will never go to a martial arts movie, just as some people hate Westerns; Jack Warner once told his producers, "Don't make me any more movies where the people write with feathers." But like all ambitious movies, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" transcends its origins and becomes one of a kind. It's glorious, unashamed escapism and surprisingly touching at the same time. And they're really up there in those trees.” - Roger Ebert.

The Wachowski Brothers’ “The Matrix” (1999)
“A friend of mine requested this post, and I am happy to oblige. Is “The Matrix” a great movie? For me, the answer is not straightforward, and depends on the meaning of great. If you define greatness by subtle psychological studies and characters, then it is definitely not a great film. If you are rather after pure excitement, adrenaline-pumping action, and breathtaking effects, you will be abundantly served. Twenty years ago, there was a real “cult” surrrounding the “Matrix” phenomenon, and this first part of the trilogy perfectly embodies it, aided by a surprise effect and freshness unfortunately absent in the two following sequels.” - J. Abrache.
Summary: “A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers.“ - imdb.com.
The Matrix’s imdb.com page, with reviews and trailers:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133093
“
"The Matrix" did not bore me. It interested me so much, indeed, that I wanted to be challenged even more. I wanted it to follow its material to audacious conclusions, to arrive not simply at victory, but at revelation. I wanted an ending that was transformational, like "Dark City's," and not one that simply throws us a sensational action sequence. I wanted, in short, a Third Act.” - Roger Ebert.
