A man with a long family background delving deep into banking and business, he graduated with an honours degree in economics at Oxford University. How he met his wife Carlotta was a mystery--in fact, his entire relationship with Carlotta was kept under wraps. However, he remained very faithful to her, even when the family was being pursued by Snatchers for a rumour that surrounded them since the eldest son’s disappearance.

Brother: Rodney Chung

Eight years older than Emmett, Rodney doesn’t know his younger brother as much as he would want to. The only memory he had of Emmett was that he was almost fatally shot when he was only 5--by someone armed with a gun and his head hidden with a wide-brimmed hat. He ended up going absolute berserk and detached himself from his family the moment he stepped into school.

Background/History:

Emmett’s childhood was very black and white--loved to bits by his mother and father, but constantly living in his brother’s shadow with the only wish that he got to know his brother more and why he was acting so distant. When he was 5, the family was ambushed by a group of Muggles belonging to a Mafia group, the claim being that his father owed them a huge sum of money for ‘breaking a deal’. Enraged, Emmett’s father tried to drive them away, but the group did not leave quietly--they raised hell in the home, shooting multiple bullets and wrecking a lot of things. One of the bullets entered Emmett’s body, striking him in the collarbone and narrowly missing his heart. It was Rodney who drove them away in the end with a stash of dungbombs--and eventually the family had to move to a private estate in Cambridge, living in fear. Emmett was sent away to a hospital to recover from both his wound and the trauma.

(The Mafia group in question was actually Emmett’s father’s ‘friends’--the deal was that as long as he was friends with them, he would not find himself someone to marry. He had no idea that they intended to end his family line, and got married in secret anyway.)

Rodney disappeared two years before Emmett began his journey at Hogwarts. While the rest of the family worried for him, Emmett resented his brother’s decisions. Even if he wanted to bring Rodney back home, he knew he had a lot to owe the family.

Hogwarts Mystery unfolded.

Once Wallace’s case was cleared up, Emmett began to leave home more often, not just for his job at the Ministry (and he did love working in the same place as his mother, don’t get me wrong) but for hanging out more with his friends. He became less and less closed up, and eventually found a place to live on his own, though he always paid his parents and Rodney a visit just to hear Rodney’s full story and to try and mend the broken bond between them.

Emmett joined the Order of the Phoenix as a spy in early 1996.

In May 1998, Emmett joined the Battle of Hogwarts, but he did not survive. He was killed by a heavy pillar pinning him to the ground while running through the corridors. He was honoured alongside all the rest of the fallen, survived by his brother who already had a family of his own.

Personality:

Is it appropriate to say that Emmett has trust issues? Other than his parents, whom he cared for deeply, Emmett had a hard time opening up to new people. Rowan was the first to break through that shell, though, showing him that not all people are as disloyal as he had been led to believe. Sometimes he still retains some venom which he doesn’t hesitate to spit out in his retorts--some people had to help him monitor that. He speaks with no filter, preferring to be blunt and straightforward with his opinions and preferences. Despite his bully-like attitude, however, he’s very studious and works hard. His ambition laid in getting justice for his father.

Misc:

Emmett’s a popular boy with the girls at school--first pointed out by Penny, whom he once had a small crush on despite their polar opposites. However, he couldn’t stand being an object for girls to ogle at, and at one point he snapped at one of the girls for staring starry-eyed at him.

Very few people knew about Emmett’s scar. Only his dorm mates knew, and once he was comfortable enough with his friends they would know of it too.

Felicity Flint came from incredibly poor origins. With only a mother and a younger brother, her early years in the North were characterized by lack -- lack of food, lack of money, lack of hope. They managed for a time, though it was a struggle, but by the time Felicity was eight years old, her mother knew that they could not continue like this for very much longer. She was already sick, and soon, her children would be too. She appealed to the Greenwoods for help, but though it was their responsibility as the leaders of the region, they hardly did anything at all. Not even six months later, she was dead, leaving Felicity and her brother to fend for themselves.

No one cared, Felicity realized. Those nobles could have done something, could have saved her mother, if they had wanted to -- but they hadn’t. And now she and her brother were going to starve, and still, no one would care.

They learned to steal to survive. Felicity was quick, and her brother was cute, and if it was not enough to be safe, it was at least enough to get by. If no one else would care, they would at least care for each other. And for a time, they did, until one day he did not return to the hovel that passed for their home. Maybe he had gotten held up somehow, she thought, but she looked and looked and even when she screamed, she could not find him. No one could help her find him. Her rationality tells her he must be dead, but privately, a part of her still hopes he is alive somewhere.

After losing her brother, Felicity drifted around for a while, still simply trying to survive. And then she met her -- Marion Blackthorn, Captain of the Maiden’s Revenge. She caught Felicity trying to rob her, but she saw a fire in the fourteen-year-old. Rather than punish her, the Captain gave her a chance. She took her aboard her ship, testing her with small tasks and training her in skills like sailing and sword-fighting.

Felicity worked her way through every position on the ship, learning everything the Captain had to teach her. Eventually, she became second-in-command, the Captain’s most trusted crew member. By then, Marion Blackthorn had grown older, richer, and she was ready to retire in style. At age twenty-five, Felicity Flint became the Captain of the Maiden’s Revenge.

The Maiden’s Revenge had always been somewhat Robin Hood-like in nature, and that did not change under Felicity’s leadership. They rob and plunder like all pirates do, but while they keep some for themselves, they use quite a bit to help others too. Felicity has always been willing to be the one to get her hands dirty if that is what needs to be done, and as a pirate, that is how she lives her life.

Recently, she has come into a bit of information about Emmett Greenwood. Though it has been many years, she never forgot what his family did -- or rather, didn’t do -- to hers. He is not his parents, she knows, but she has heard more than enough about his careless ways to know that he is no better. She sees him as everything she hates about the nobility, so when she discovered the nature of his connection to Delia and Xenia Arkwright, she did not need to think twice. This was the perfect opportunity to help people at the expense of the family who had most wronged hers -- a private vindication, if nothing else. She sends letter after letter, demanding money for her silence. She does genuinely like the Arkwrights -- but that does not mean she will not follow through on her threats if it comes to it.

Okay, so real talk here. I understand I’m way over a year late in asking this, mostly because I’ve never thought much about other peoples’ involvement in most of what I create, but here’s a question I’ll drop--

Anyone want to be friends with Clara/Rose/Emmett?

I plan on dropping more info about Rose and Emmett in the side blog @hphm-tanaka-chung if anyone wants to learn more about them. As for Clara though...well, she has a few, but she’s always open to more. So if anyone wants to be friends with her, great! And hey, maybe we can collaborate on a few things, too? Writing, maybe drawing and editing as well?

But really, let me know because I do plan on including more of the community somehow. Up to now most of my writing includes a lot about my main MC and occasionally her little sister, but if more of the community joins in then great.

a dreary little washington town, forks has never surpassed a population of 3,000. a close - knit community, at least in terms of recognition, it is also one in which word travels rapidly. so when police chief swan's daughter, miss isabella swan comes to forks to live with her father & finish out school at the local community college, well, everyone knew about it. it was a small town, after all. but what most don't know is that under the surface, there is so much more than meets the eye. quileute shapeshifters live on the reservation next door, the sleepy town is crawling with monsters that go bump in the night, and each corner turned could lead to danger. the olympic coven has called the town home for four years but all good things must come to an end. and when a mysterious new species makes its presence known, it may be sooner rather than later.

As I was driving through Mississippi on Devil’s Night, Maureen Corrigan’s book review of Let the People See The Emmett Till Story, by Elliott Gorn, broadcasted over the local National Public Radio (NPR) station. It was a haunting reminder of the legacies we have all inherited. As I was passing through Mississippi’s endless-night horizon, Corrigan’s bone-chilling narrative bled through my car speakers:

‘Let the people see what they did to my boy.’ Those were the words spoken by Emmet Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, after viewing the brutalized body of her son.

During his night of torture near the Delta town of Money, Mississippi, 14-year-old Till’s right eye had been dislodged from its socket, his tongue choked out of his mouth, the back of his skull crushed and his head penetrated by a bullet.

Shortly after Corrigan’s Fresh Air segment, NPR commentators and their guests spoke about the Tree of Life synagogue massacre, yet another act of domestic terrorism in a seemingly endless string of mass shootings our country has witnessed this decade. With a sense of foreboding, the on-air commentators and their guests were not only concerned about Robert Bowers’s 11 executions via his AR-15 rifle and three handguns on October 27, but the broader, recent rise and empowerment of white nationalism throughout our country.

In 2015, prior to the most recent presidential election, I warned:

Maybe it’s hard for me to stomach the recently renewed attack on the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment because I fear the root cause of these sentiments. As Mark Twain supposedly said, ‘History may not repeat itself, but it does rhyme.’

The strong anti-foreigner feelings of past generations are being revived as a rationale to make our country great again. At what cost?

I fear America’s deep legacy of anti-Asian racism will continue to haunt our future generations. Now the anti-immigrant rhetoric — of ‘sanctuary cities,’ ‘border walls,’ and ‘anchor babies’ — is bringing xenophobia to the front of our country’s consciousness once again.

In the seminal Citizenship Clause case involving Wong Kim Ark, the Supreme Court stated: ‘We are entirely ready to accept the provision proposed in the constitutional amendment, that the children born here of Mongolian parents shall be declared by the Constitution of the United States to be entitled to civil rights and to equal protection before the law with others.’

Back then, some politicians argued that the Chinese were so different in so many ways that they could never assimilate into American culture, and they represented a threat to the country’s principles and institutions.

Just last year, I documented the harrowing death of Aylan Kurdi and the refugee crisis:

Since the conflict in Syria began in 2011, until the photography date of Aylan Kurdi’s [three-year old] lifeless body, the United States had taken in only about 1,500 Syrian refugees. That is not a typo: 1,500 Syrian refugees total. When Obama raised the Syrian ceiling to 10,000 — a more reasonable number I suppose, but still an unbearably low moral figure, he faced a massive outcry from conservatives. Last week, many politicians paid tribute to Holocaust Memorial Day and the millions of innocent lives lost, and these politicians pledged, ‘Never again.’ Yet they turn a blind-eye to our current refugee crisis….

Whereas Canada has accepted almost 40,000 refugees to much celebration by its citizens, Obama’s 10,000 target has now become, under Donald Trump, a complete and total shutdown of Syrian and Muslim refugees.

The current refugee crisis is the issue of our lifetime and we have met it with little to no fanfare. America was once viewed as a beacon of hope. Lady Liberty represented freedom and opportunity. But now we have plans to build a much vaunted wall while we permit our most at-risk communities to drown in lead-contaminated water.

We pledge to never let millions of innocent lives suffer again or deprive our communities of their most basic needs. But how easily we forget. Humanity washed along the shore, and we walked by. We are witnessing so many refugee hands reach out, but we refrain from reaching back. For the first time in my life, I don’t recognize this country.

Shortly after Kurdi’s death, his relatives were admitted into Canada as refugees. At least, in Canada, Aylan Kurdi did not die in vain.

Now, with only days until the midterms, the Trump administration is continuing to amplify its dog-whistle propaganda campaign on immigration and crime, to dehumanize migrants and others and arrest asylum seekers. Meanwhile, acts of domestic terrorism receive much less consternation. For too many of our country’s leaders, it’s always “too early to talk about gun control regulation” and “too soon to react, politically or otherwise, to the latest mass murder.”

They deem the Second Amendment to be absolute and interpret its words — “[a] well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” — to mean that citizens have every right to tote around AR-15s. Surely many would protest, one hand on the heart and the other hand’s finger on a trigger, if any president declared he alone could change this interpretation and the law with an executive order.

Yet the Fourteenth Amendment is much less sacred to those same people who pledge such loyalty to the Constitution. Its words — “[a]ll persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside” — have been interpreted the same way for the past 150 years. With one fell swoop of the pen, Trump believes he alone can change this. And so do many of his loyal followers.

This would be funny, if it weren’t so sad… and scary as hell.

My ATL colleague Elie Mystal opined on the subject recently in his column Post Runs White Nationalist Propaganda Masquerading As Law-Talkin’:

WHERE IS THE MISINTERPRETATION? These white assholes keep saying that we’re misreading the Fourteenth Amendment. HOW? The writers of the Fourteenth Amendment wanted to do a thing. They did it in the only way they could. THEY WROTE IT DOWN. Where’s the freaking confusion?

If you pin one of these jerks down, they’ll start talking about Native Americans. The Fourteenth Amendment didn’t confer citizenship to Native Americans, who were clearly born here, and thus, they argue, citizenship wasn’t meant to be a birthright. I have little patience for people who use our racism towards the First Americans to justify racism towards New Americans, but there you go. If you think that our treatments towards Native Americans was a feature instead of a bug, that’s your argument.

This excerpt doesn’t do Mystal’s piece justice. I highly suggest you check out his full article to see how he systematically breaks down the entire misinterpretation argument. If you are a legal nerd, you will thoroughly enjoy it.

In June, for World Refugee Day, I wrote about the harrowing historical acts of the current administration:

We are directly violating Article 31 of the Refugee Convention. Instead of addressing this issue, the Trump administration is aiming to amplify its wanton and reckless ignorance of historical precedent. The Department of Justice now plans to send Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) Officers to our southern border to prosecute migrants. Maybe this administration should do better to understand the rule of law before it deploys JAG Officers, who specialize in military justice and military law, to interpret and enforce immigration laws.

The vaunted wall that the Trump administration so desperately plots to build is already being constructed brick by brick. Even if we refuse to admit it to ourselves. A separation of families’ strategy was executed on our borders, while the separation of society continues to happen within them.

Our country’s withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council isn’t a bug, it’s a feature of the current administration. I’ve spoken to so many others who also feel within and without. When did we get here… while America slept?

The United States Constitution may be color blind, but our leaders certainly are not. The vast majority of the murders in our country are done with the accomplice of the Second Amendment, not the Fourteenth Amendment.

If we’re talking about how we have misinterpreted an amendment the wrong way for quite some time, let’s focus on the one that has been such a god-awful enabler of mass murders in our country.

People can talk all day about their Second Amendment rights, but we need to begin the discussion about our responsibilities. How many more mass shootings in schools, synagogues, and churches can we endure before we accept some responsibility?

Melissa was born and raised in China by strict parents Rose never got to see. A hard worker at school and in her family home, she eventually got herself a job as a bank manager. She moved to Japan in hopes of settling trade issues between China and Japan--it was there where she met Rose’s father. She is now working as a representative of the Chinese national bank, and her consistent travelling between the two countries resulted in a lack of bonding between her children.

Father: Ashina Tanaka

Before Ryotaro Tanaka stepped foot into Mahoutokoro, Ashina went first. He was a good student at Mahoutokoro, but not a face everyone remembered so well; he constantly kept to himself and buried himself in his work all the time. The few friends he did have, he rarely kept connections with after graduating. Still, he took delicate care in everything he did, and eventually opened a shop where he made crafts and learned the old Japanese arts upon graduating.

Brother: Kyoru Tanaka

Kyoru Tanaka was Rose’s older brother who was first considered for Mahoutokoro but eventually chose to go to Hogwarts when his letter of acceptance arrived from that school. Despite the geographical distance he made the trips to and from King’s Cross work. Just like his father, Kyoru kept to himself a lot, and he made very few friends in his time there. Upon his imprisonment in the buried vault he thought nothing of the impact he left on the rest of his family.

Cousin: Cho Chang

Cho Chang is six years younger than Rose and aspires to be a good flier like her cousin. Though they never really met much she heard of her older cousin’s stories and eventually got sorted into Ravenclaw in her first year, when Rose was then made Head Girl.

Grandmother: Fei-Ying Tanaka

Rose was very close with her paternal grandmother who was just equally proud of her son and his achievements. When she was younger they would spend a lot of time together while Kyoru was in school, and from her grandmother she would learn how to read and write in Japanese, communicate and read and write in English, and understand more of her culture and her family history.

Background/History:

Rose lived a rather detached sort of life within her family when she was younger. The one person she had a firm relationship with at the time was her grandmother, who always took her out on trips to the park while teaching her many different things. Her father was busy manning the shop soon after Kyoru started to attend school, and as for her mother she barely saw her around a lot either. During this time, though, Rose did learn a few useful things from her father as well as her grandmother--she soon mastered the ancient art of origami and ink drawings.

Eventually, Kyoru went missing in the summer of 1982, and two years later Rose began to attend Hogwarts. Before September 1 every year, she would move to her aunt’s place and live with her cousin, Cho.

Hogwarts Mystery unfolded.

Upon graduation, Rose went back to Japan and at first contemplated on using her talents to teach at Mahoutokoro, but the memories she had of the wizard in white robes ambushing her on R’s orders were enough to make her refuse her placement. Instead, she sought a position on one of the Japanese Quidditch teams. She eventually was placed in the substitute roster on the Toyohashi Tengu as Seeker, but her exceptional talents on the pitch eventually bumped her up to the starting roster. She was eventually admitted to the Japanese National Quidditch team, and represented her country in the 1994 Quidditch Cup. Although the team did not make it into the final, she still revelled in her glory.

Well, that was, until Talbott reached out to her while she was recovering from minor injuries from the matches. She was hesitant to reach out to him in return, but remembering her promise to him she eventually started a correspondence with him.

Rose fought along with her peers at the Battle of Hogwarts and survived. After Hogwarts was fully rebuilt, she took over as the Flying Coach at Hogwarts, and then the Quidditch referee certified by the British Ministry of Magic, when Madam Hooch eventually retired.

Rose did not consider marriage throughout this time, but eventually she reconnected with Talbott and the flame reignited. They got married in early 1999. Current legacies undetermined.

Personality:

Rose is not at all like the rest of her family--much like her grandmother, she is understanding and patient with everyone she meets. Rowan was actually the first one to break through that shell the rest of her family had cast upon her, and she became much more open and friendly. She’s not afraid to get a little competitive at times with her peers, but it was all for fun in the end. Still, she knows well where her loyalties lie. She would snap shut if something upsets her, and break down if the situation bore too much pressure. Her way of venting involved making a lot of origami and writing in a small notebook--almost like a journal--or furiously writing essays that didn’t pertain to academics.

Misc:

Rose’s favourite colour is pink, but perhaps that came from the fact that she was literally named after a flower.

Rose and Tulip actually share a close kinship based on the fact that they were named after flowers. Admittedly, Rose was about to be named Blossom when she was born, but her father once surprised her mother with an elegantly painted origami rose which spurred the change of name before her birth.

Rose could make origami. She trained her patience through it.

Despite Rose not warming up to flying at first, she eventually became really good at it and so continued to foster her talents in that subject area.
