launch over 50 startups!! This is just a small sample of the many startups that OYO alumni have founded. Many other successful ventures are out there, and the list continues to grow.
What could be the reason that OYO alumni have gone on to launch over 50 startups!!
There are several possible reasons why OYO alumni have launched over 50 startups: Exposure and experience: Working at OYO, a high-growth startup, would have exposed its employees to various aspects of running a business, from product development and marketing to fundraising and operations. This firsthand experience could equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to launch their ventures. Network and support: OYO has built a strong network of investors, mentors, and partners. Alumni might leverage these connections to secure funding, advice, and support for their startups. Additionally, the alumni network itself could serve as a valuable source of collaboration and support. Entrepreneurial culture: OYO's fast-paced, dynamic environment might have fostered an entrepreneurial spirit among its employees. They might have been encouraged to take risks, innovate, and think outside the box, qualities that are crucial for entrepreneurs. Industry understanding: Many OYO alumni launch startups within the hospitality or related industries. Their experience at OYO would have given them a deep understanding of the market, its challenges, and opportunities, which could be valuable assets for their businesses. Financial incentives: OYO offered ESOPs (Employee Stock Ownership Plans) to its employees, which could have provided them with financial resources to start their ventures upon leaving the company. Market opportunity: The Indian startup ecosystem is booming, with increasing access to funding and support. This favorable environment could make launching a startup more attractive to OYO alumni. It's important to note that these are just some potential reasons, and the specific motivations of each OYO alumnus who launched a startup would vary. Here are some additional points to consider: - The number of startups launched by OYO alumni is impressive, but it's worth noting that not all of them will be successful. - Launching a startup is a risky endeavor, and many factors contribute to success or failure. - While OYO's experience may have played a role in the success of some alumni startups, it's not the only factor. Overall, the high number of startups launched by OYO alumni is a testament to the company's impact on its employees and the broader Indian startup ecosystem. Read the full article

Why Does Experience Matter?
Domestic Worker Sector Skill Council, National Skill Development Corporation and Skill India had recently organized a Domestic Workers Skill Summit 2017 at India Habitat Centre on 2nd February 2017. I got an opportunity to attend the summit as a volunteer for Helper4U.
The Chief Guest for the Skill Council event was Hon’ble Minister of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Mr. Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
The main speakers of the event were
Mr. Amod K Kanth(Chairman DWSSC), Mr. Amitabh Kant(CEO, Niti Aayog), Mr. Manish Kumar(MD & CEO, National Skill Development Corporation), Mr. M C Luther(Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India).
The agenda for the day had presentations of different companies in this sector like Educomp, KPMG, and Hamara angels and four-panel discussions.
The topics of the panel discussions were as follows:
From policy to practice: Addressing Legal Safeguards
Breaking Barriers: Unmasking the invisibility of domestic workers
Skill for future: New age training, talents, and utilities
Path of reform: From unorganized sector and technology reinforcement
I attended this Skill Council summit as part of the Helper4U team along with my friend. We handled the company stall, attended to visitors and explained our organization to them. Helper4U is a 2 ½-year-old organization. It is an online placement portal to provide job opportunities to domestic workers like Aaya, Bai, Cook, Driver & Everyone similar and connect them to the Employers without the need of a middleman. All this by just using a mobile phone! Helper4U attended the summit so that the visitors and other stallholders could know this concept and use the platform effectively.
In the fourth panel Mrs. Meenakshi Jain (Founder of Helper4U) was one of the speakers in this panel. Abhiraj Singh Bhal (CEO and Co-founder of Urban Clap), Sameer Nagpal(Director CoCubes) etc were also part of the panel.
During the discussion
Meenakshi shared some case studies to emphasize how technology is being used by Helper4U to scale up placements while also providing better & more opportunities to Job Seekers at the Bottom of the Economic Pyramid. She explained how a platform like Helper4U can be used by all training partners . To place the trainees better and faster, at nearly no marketing expense.
She shared the details of the H4U Jobs app. This App will soon be available for the Job Seekers for access to job opportunities as well as better interaction with prospective Employers.
Meenakshi also explained how use of technology does away with the exploitation of the workers at the Bottom of the Economic Pyramid at every stage. Finally, she shared her vision of using technology to upskill these workers with E learnings at their pace and place, as well as for marketing products targeted at them.
It was a great experience to visit the summit as I have learned how to manage a stall. I also interacted with many intellectual people visiting the summit. The speeches were enriching . We were able to learn many new things which helped me in understanding the topic properly. It was truly a wonderful experience for me. At last I want to say that this sector needs more focus by the government which will help reduce the current state of unemployment.

Exploring the nooks and crannies behind UrbanClap’s dominance with Abhiraj Bhal
“Competition separates men from boys,” goes the popular adage. And, it’s quite apt in the case of few Indian startups who beat the competition to emerge as winners. Oyo and UrbanClap are such examples that have outshined and built a seemingly unbeatable dominance in their respective domains.
Oyo has exceeded the expectation by a significant margin through its valuation, global ambition and…

New Post has been published on https://techcrunchapp.com/vy-capital-buys-urban-company-esops-worth-5-million-technology-news-ettech/
Vy Capital buys Urban Company Esops worth $5 million, Technology News, ETtech
Illustration: Rahul Awasthi
Existing investor Vy Capital has picked up employee stock options (Esops) worth about $5 million (about Rs 37 crore) in Urban Company through a secondary transaction, a senior company executive told ET, as part of the full-stack services marketplace’s third Esop buyback programme in the last three years.
The UAE-based fund, which also counts online food delivery major Zomato, online realty platform NoBroker and rewards and cashback startup MagicPin among its portfolio, has been an investor in the Gurugram-based startup since 2017, having entered the cap table during its Series C funding round. It holds 10.3% stake in Urban Company, according to data collated by industry tracker Tracxn.
According to Urban Company chief executive Abhiraj Singh Bhal, about 183 employees, across designations and roles, were eligible to participate in the latest Esop transaction, of which about 120 people, ranging from call centre executives to senior leadership, took part.
In 2017, Urban Clap, as it was known then, had undertaken a $1 million Esop sale round, which was followed by a $2.5 million secondary round in December 2018. That coincided with the company’s primary fundraising round, in which it had raised $50 million led by London-based investment firm Steadview Capital.
The latest Esop sale was undertaken at the same price — Rs 1,10,000 per share — at which secondary transactions of the earlier funding rounds were priced at, according to Bhal.
The transaction is the latest example of domestic startups undertaking Esop sales to put money in the hands of their employees. In the recent past, Moglix, Razorpay, Rivigo and Oyo had done the same.
This also comes at an opportune time for startup employees, who have been hit hard by a combination of layoffs, furloughs and payouts as India’s consumer internet companies struggle to recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and a nationwide lockdown.
“I think in a very interesting way, allowing your team members to take some money off the table does two things – it makes the instrument very real, so that there is no longer this view that this is paper money. It is real cash, and they start thinking about it as better than cash, because they won’t earn similar returns even if they put it in any market instrument, given the value appreciation every 18 months or so” Bhal told ET.
Indian startups have also been expanding their respective Esop pools and putting in place more employee friendly Esop policies that will allow them to earn strong cash returns from their vested shares, allowing them accelerated vesting, longer holding periods and reasonable strike prices, among others.
Read: Startups soften pay cuts by expanding Esops pool
Under Urban Company’s Esop programme, every employee gets Esops at a face value of one rupee and the prevailing stock price has crossed Rs 1 lakh. “Secondly, we also have accelerated vesting; if the company were to go public, or if there is a strategic sale, it doesn’t matter what has been vested with you till date, the rest of the shareholding that is unvested vests in an accelerated fashion, which is very, very friendly for employees,” Bhal said.
Thirdly, there is the concept of a no-hold period. “We have kept an infinite hold period. We won’t force our employees to exercise any time really. It’s up to them. We have a vesting schedule of 25% each year over four years,” he added.
Founded by Bhal, Varun Khaitan and Raghav Chandra, Urban Company runs spa, beauty, grooming, repairs and cleaning services and earns revenue through a commission fee model based on transactions made on its platform. Earlier this month, it said July revenue was at 77% pre-Covid-19 peak in February, and it expects to fully recover in the next 1-2 months.
The online services platform said it was seeing faster recovery of in-home services like A/C servicing, appliance repair, painting, and pest controls, home cleaning – reaching 90% of pre-Covid-19 levels in July.
In August last year, the company had raised $75 million in a Series E round led by US-based investment fund Tiger Global Management, valuing it at close to $1 billion. The firm has till date cumulatively raised about $200 million from investors, including SAIF Partners, Accel, Steadview Capital, and Vy Capital.
