Abbott is warning that sensors on some of its blood sugar monitoring systems may need to be replaced to prevent inaccurate readings. Testing showed that some sensors on the FreeStyle Libre 3 system may incorrectly report high blood sugar levels, the medical device maker said Thursday. An inaccurate high blood sugar reading can prompt patients to take insulin when they don’t need it. The devices were distributed in the first half of May in the United States. Abbott estimates that less then 1% of U.S. users are affected.

US FDA approves Abbott’s app for diabetes management
The Abbott FreeStyle Libre 2 iOS app has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States to monitor diabetes patients’ glucose levels.
Customers can read their glucose levels on compatible iPhones using the accessible and inexpensive sensor-based glucose monitoring app without the need for a reader.
It makes it easier to provide Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 2 integrated continuous glucose monitoring (iCGM) system with a comprehensive digital offering.
The new app can provide individualized glucose data every minute to users of FreeStyle Libre 2 glucose sensors and is intended for use by adults with diabetes as well as children over the age of four.
The app lets users scan the sensor to see the current glucose reading and trend arrow, which show how diet, exercise, and other aspects of one’s lifestyle can affect diabetes.
Through the LibreLinkUp app, the FreeStyle Libre app can enable caregivers to remotely monitor patients and receive real-time alarms. Additionally, the LibreLinkUp app makes it simple to share glucose data obtained from the new app.
Jared Watkin, senior vice president for diabetes care at Abbott, stated: The demands of living with diabetes can be overwhelming, so there is a pressing need to improve the ease, affordability, accuracy, and seamless integration of diabetes management into people’s daily lives.
“The FreeStyle Libre 2 iOS app makes it easier for people to manage their diabetes on their iPhones. It gives users the information they need around the clock and helps them improve their health while they’re on the go.”
To alert users when glucose levels rise or fall, the new app offers real-time glucose alarms as an optional feature.
Additionally, the app has a precision of 14 days and provides every-minute readings, an eight-hour glucose history, and a comprehensive view of trends.
The FreeStyle Libre 2 iOS app can be connected to Abbott’s Cloud-based data management platform, LibreView, in addition to the LibreLinkUp app.
According to Abbott, the FreeStyle Libre 2 is the most durable iCGM sensor currently on the market, with a wear time of 14 days.
Jot Dx, Abbott’s new insertable cardiac monitor, was unveiled last month in the United States to improve precise diagnosis of hard-to-find abnormal heart rhythms and reduce data burden.
Separately, Abbott Laboratories has agreed to pay $160 million to settle claims of False Claims Act violations against Arriva Medical and Alere, two of its divisions.
Abbott purchased Arriva and its parent company, Alere, in September 2017.
Arriva and Alere were accused by the US Department of Justice of fabricating Medicare claims by offering kickbacks to Medicare beneficiaries, ineligible patients, and deceased patients.
