Abbacchio Week Day 6: Break

Today's @abbacchioweek prompt, featuring Abba laid up with a broken foot and Narancia doing his best to be the grumpy man's caretaker XD

6. Break

Being laid up was always the worst. Leone hated it, everyone knew he hated it, and thus gave him a wide berth.

            Everyone except Narancia, who constantly came to bug him, asking him if he needed anything, if he needed his foot propped up because Fugo said it reduced the swelling, if he wanted a snack, if he wanted to watch something, if he was bored.

            “I need to be left alone.” Leone growled over and over again.

            And Narancia would shrug, leave, and then be back an hour later, repeating the list of things yet again.

            As if it wasn’t bad enough to be unable to move around very well due to his broken ankle, it looked like Abbacchio would also have to endure this incessant purgatory of Narancia bugging him.

            He finally snapped when Narancia offered to bring the tv or the gaming system into Leone’s room so he could play with it.

            “I don’t need any of that crap, I just need to be left alone! Just go away and let me have two damn minutes of silence!”

            Narancia’s face fell instantly and his shoulders slumped. He looked away like a kicked puppy and started to turn to the door. “Yeah, okay. Sorry, Abbacchio.”

            And dammit if Leone didn’t feel absolutely awful after that.

            He hadn’t really meant to yell at the kid, he was just frustrated, mostly with being cooped up. It always put him on edge. And really, didn’t Narancia know better by now than to pick at him?

            You can’t blame the kid, he admonished himself. It wasn’t Narancia’s fault he cared.

            Leone sighed, lying in bed for a long time, pondering what he should do, then finally sat up and swung his legs over the side of the bed, grabbing the crutches resting nearby.

            He hobbled out to the living room seeing Narancia curled in one corner of the couch, staring blankly at the television. Leone felt his heart prick in guilt. He might have had a broken foot but he hadn’t intended to break the kid’s heart as well.

            He sat down heavily with a grunt and Narancia glanced at him in surprise before looking away again.

            Leone was silent for a long moment before he took a deep breath. “Sorry I yelled at you.”

            Narancia shrugged. “I know I’m annoying, you don’t have to tell me.”

            Leone rolled his eyes and reached out to ruffle the kid’s hair. “Maybe a little, but I don’t mind so much. I know you care about people, that’s a skill I’m not that great at. You should be proud.”

            Narancia finally looked over at him. “You care about people too, Abbacchio,” he said firmly.

            Leone was slightly taken aback, but didn’t say anything. He couldn’t deny that he cared, sometimes too much. He just wasn’t as good at showing it.

            Narancia suddenly scooted around, grabbing a pillow and setting it on the coffee table so Leone could prop his broken foot up. “Here, get comfy. Let’s watch a movie. I’ll make popcorn!”

            Leone smiled slightly always admiring how the kid could pop back so quickly and decided he needed to make more of an effort not to hurt him in the future.

Abbacchio Week Day 3: Play

Catching up a little with @abbacchioweek this was friday's prompt, so a little late, but I hope you will all enjoy some fluff featuring Abbacchio and his daughter Rose from my Hearts of Gold series.

3: Play

“More tea Mr. Papa?”

            “Of course, My Lady.” Leone held out the tiny cup, receiving a dripping top-off to his lemonade “tea”.

            If anyone had told him three years ago that he would be attending a nearly Lilliputian tea party with the esteemed company of Grumpy Bear, Miss Midnight, and Signore Scales, he would have thought the notion was ridiculous, but having a daughter changed everything.

            After receiving a little tea set with her namesake painted on it as a birthday gift from Uncle Fugo, Rose had taken to obsessing over having tea parties. Most of the time, with pretend tea and her favorite stuffed animals, but occasionally with one of the adults as a guest, and juice and snacks.

            “The tea is very delightful, Lady Rose,” he commented politely as he shifted on the cushion he was sitting on. He hadn’t realized how bad his knees were until he had started getting on the floor to play with Rose but it was worth it to see her smile.

            It was worth putting on his suit to attend a stuffed animal tea party—because the stuffed animals were dressing up too, so it was only proper. And Rosie in her little red tulle dress Trish had made that made her look like a little flower was in her element as the gracious host.

            So, when he was asked, “Another cookie, Mr. Papa?” of course he had to say yes.

            Leone had never thought he was capable of such love, but it turned out that he adored this little girl as much as she did him.

7: Free Day

It had not been the best day, if Leone was being honest. He had woken up with a headache that had persisted throughout the day, he had stubbed his toe on the way to the bathroom, the bakery had not had his favorite pastry, and part of his luggage had been lost on the train to the hotel.

            Any of those might have been overlooked by themselves, but all together and on his birthday, it was like adding insult to injury.

            He wasn’t upset necessarily about turning thirty, but there was still that sense of lost youth that had been violently cut short. Something that would never be regained. Maybe he was mourning it more than he had realized.

            Carmen realized he was struggling that day and he felt bad because she had planned this trip for him specifically so they could get away alone and relax on his birthday and the day had been anything but relaxing so far.

            After the garment bag he had brought his suit in hadn’t made it off the train, he decided it was best to give up on meeting their dinner reservation that night and simply sank onto the bed to close him eyes against the headache still pounding in his skull.

            Carmen assured him that they could order food to the room if he would rather and then headed off to the adjoining bathroom.

            Leone wasn’t paying much attention to the sound of running water, but he was slightly surprised when Carmen came back with her hair dry and tucked up, in a red silk robe.

            She smiled gently. “I drew you a bath. Come on. It will help you relax.”

            Leone rose reluctantly and allowed her to take his hand and lead him to the large clawfoot tub that the hotel provided.

            She dotingly helped him undress and he sank into the tub, letting out a soft groan as he felt the hot water envelope his body. Scented oil and bath salts helped to ease the tension, and he leaned back, closing his eyes.

            Carmen tied his hair up for him and leaned in to kiss his forehead. “Happy birthday, my Leone.”

            And finally, Leone’s lips curled up in a smile and he realized that spending his birthday relaxing, ordering food to the hotel room, and spending the night with his lovely wife was honestly the best outcome the day could have had.

            “Thank you, my love,” he replied. “It has been a good birthday.”
