"Purple Mountain" song composed by Aaron MF Olson Performed by The Musical Tracing Ensemble
Laena Myers-Ionita - Violin Aisling Cormack - Violin Pauline Lay - Violin Danny Echevarria - Violin Carl Harders - Double Bass Luke Csehak - Euphonium, Cello Tara Milch - Flute Patrick Shiroishi - Saxophone Aaron M. Olson - Conductor
The Musical Tracing Ensemble process: An ensemble of musicians is gathered in a performance space. Each musician has their own instrument, means of amplification (if needed), and pair of headphones. All musicians’ headphones are plugged into one outputting sound source (usually an iPod with many headphone splitters). Music (usually a well known song from the popular music canon) is played from the sound source and the musicians are instructed to play something, anything that they hear in their headphones as accurately as they can on their own instrument. The musicians never know what songs or sounds they will be hearing in advance. The audience only hears what the musicians are playing and none of the original sound source, thus creating a “tracing” of the sound source material. There is no rehearsal, everything is live.

Loud noise warning for 3:49-4:25 and 5:58-6:31. There’s a super-feedbacky distorted guitar that plays during those parts in the soundtrack, but the song as a whole is lovely (and is an original piece composed by one Aaron M. Olson).

Hey Dragon Fans! Let’s do a round up of all the information we’ve gotten so far about The Dragon Prince! This is quite a lot of info, so I’ll be throwing the bulk of it under a cut. (There will be spoilers for episode 1 of the show below the cut.)
The Dragon Prince, developed by Wonderstorm Inc., animated by Bardel Entertainment, and distributed by Netflix will be releasing all the episodes of the first season on September 14, 2018.
The official summary is, “Two human princes forge an unlikely bond with the elven assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.”
You can watch the promotional trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7Bf7JLnlOU
Promotional taglines used by the official accounts have been “Destiny is a book you write yourself!” and “dragon big”.
Netflix currently has the show rated as TV-Y7 for Fantasy Violence. The animation is cell-shaded CG, much like what you see in Fire Emblem, Guilty Gear, or Avatar: The Lost Episodes.
The show will have an accompanying video game developed by Wonderstorm* with the story tellers for both show and game working closely together to ensure the stories being told are well integrated and complementary.
Our lead characters for the Netflix series are Callum, the elder human prince, Ezran, the human crown prince, and Rayla, a Moonshadow Elven Assassin.
The universe The Dragon Prince takes place in is divided into two primary areas, Xadia, the magical lands in the East, and the five great human kingdoms in the West. Centuries ago, Thunder the King of Dragons guarded the border between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms.
In the TDP universe, there were originally six types of magic: moon, sun, stars, earth, ocean, and sky. Humans developed a seventh type of magic, Dark Magic. With Dark Magic you find a creature that has that magic as part of their essence, you consume it quickly, and it unleashes a great amount of magic quickly. Dark Magic became a shortcut to great, fast power, but led to corruption and was wielded at the expense of the varied, intelligent, and powerful magical creatures of Xadia. The dragons and the elves allied to try to put a stop to the humans’ use of Dark Magic, but the Dragon King Thunder was killed by humans using dark magic and Thunder’s only egg and heir, The Dragon Prince, was destroyed. Now the world stands on the edge of all out war...
The first episode is titled “Book 1: Moon, Episode 1: Echoes of Thunder” and was premiered at the SDCC 2018 panel. You can read IGN’s review of the episode here.
SPOILERS FOR EPISODE ONE BEGIN HERE
Ezran is scared of thunderstorms and likes to steal treats from the baker with his pet glow toad, Bait. Glow toads are described as “the Grumpy Cat of magical illusionary amphibians.”
Even though Callum is older he is not the crown prince because he is the stepson of the king. This means Callum and Ezran are half brothers. The condition and whereabouts of Callum and Ezran’s mother is reported to be a spoiler. The King is a black man, and it appears that Ezran may be biracial.
One of the royal guards Sorin/Soren/Zoren (spelling unknown) is tasked with training Callum in sword fighting. Callum is disinterested and prefers to draw, unless Soren’s sister, Claudia, is around. Callum appears to have a crush on Claudia, and Soren helps by going easy on him in sparring sessions in front of her. Claudia appears to be very studious and nearly runs into a tree while reading because she is too focused on her book. Claudia and Soren’s father is a highly placed lord and leader of the royal army/guard.
It looks like Callum will be learning to use magic over the course of the show. What type of magic he uses is currently unknown. Based on the trailer I think that may be Claudia also shown using magic. Regardless of her identity, I suspect what the dark haired female magic user in the trailer is using is the Dark Magic we’ve seen discussed.
The elves that Rayla is a member of are called Moonshadow Elves (white haired elves with dark horns) and they literally draw power from the moon. They are at thier strongest during the full moon. The bracelet Rayla wears was acquired during a ceremony swearing loyalty to the Dragon King’s cause/memory(?). Moonshadow Elves demonstrate at minimum some form of cloaking magic, but can still be detected by certain types of animals. Rayla has a Scottish accent.
Rayla is going to be something of a mysterious figure and strongly conflicted about her role in current events, “testing her sense of right and wrong.” She tries to tell herself that “an assassin does not decide right or wrong, only life and death.”*
When the Moonshadow Elves stage an attack on the castle, the King decides to send Callum and Ezran away for thier own safety. Meanwhile, Soren and Claudia are ordered by thier father to stop the assassins. Callum wants to help but is told he cannot because he is only 14 (and 3/4!) years old and he must be 15 to fight.
There was a black-haired guard in the first episode (the one attacked by Rayla) that had not been formally named, but when asked by the panel audience they named him Marcos.
END OF SPOILERS FOR EPISODE ONE
During the Q&A session (I’ve discussed this with several people who were in the room now trying to get clarity) it sounds like the question of if there would be LGBT+ representation in the show was very narrowly sidestepped. They told the panel audience that any sort of answer would be a spoiler. It seems likely that there will be LGBT+ representation, but it has not been explicitly promised, and I urge folk to temper expectations with the knowledge that while it’s wrong to use the TV-Y7 rating as a reason to not show canonically LGBT+ characters, it may end up being outside the Wonderstorm team’s hands to try to get it on screen. I’m cautiously optimistic. We’ll have to wait and see.
The staff did say they are strongly dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse fantasy universe, with an especial focus on visible ethnic diversity. We can already see the beginning of that with the King and Ezran.
Being on Netflix permits the staff to do a darker take on the story than they might have been permitted on network television, and they’re excited to get to tell a complex and nuanced story that explores moral grays and the idea that there are both good and bad actors in every group and culture. That said, they want this series to be fun, light-hearted, and quirky too.
The SDCC panel gave away two goodies to anyone lucky enough to get into the panel, a large physical poster version of the concept art we first saw with the initial announcement and an enamel pin of Ezran’s pet glow toad, Bait. The backing for the enamel pin announced that Hot Topic will be carrying exclusive merchandise for The Dragon Prince beginning in September 2018.
(A big thank you to elventhespian, owldee, and kohisu for thier live blogs of the SDCC 2018 panel.)

(Marking Records) https://www.instagram.com/p/CcpY9c6Bi10/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Taxonomic vandals and name thieves - the fake scientists in herpetology.

Travers Burhan Tjaturadi Nicolas Vidal S. P. Vijayakumar Philipp Wagner Van Wallach Perry L. Wood Jr Catharine E. Wüster Wolfgang Wüster Hussam Zaher Alexander Zorrilla Notes: 1/ All the above persons are listed as authors of papers that have engaged in the nefarious practice of taxonomic vandalism. 2/ Taxonomic vandalism is the illegal renaming of species, genera or family already named by other scientists and then, knowing these taxa have been properly named prior, promoting the illegal new names instead of the correct older names, along with simultaneously improperly trying to suppress or hide the correct legal names from others. 4/ Taxonomic vandalism is in breach of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, highly dishonest and antiscience. 5/ These acts of Taxonomic Vandalism have been mainly done at the instigation of serial law-breaker and certified animal abuser, Wolfgang Wüster of Wales. They are typically justified by the fake scientists/name thieves on the basis of a blog document called “Kaiser et al.” in fact written by Wüster himself. 6/ Taxonomic vandalism wastes time and money of legitimate scientists who have to fix the mess and deliberate confusion caused by the taxonomic vandals. 7/ Taxonomic vandals use fake online accounts and hijack databases and the like to infect them with their illegal names and to delete the correct scientific names to confuse scientists and the general public. Their actions and the damage they cause can be compared to the effects of a severe Coronavirus pandemic. 8/ Taxonomic vandalism is fake science and anti-science. Taxonomic Vandalism can only exist in the complete absence of peer review. 9/ Taxonomic vandalism has in the past caused species to be become extinct and is an evil law-breaking practice that needs to be stamped and the perpetrators exposed 10/ Many of the taxonomic vandals listed above are ostensibly government-funded scientists and are scamming research grants to conduct original research, when all they are doing is stealing work from other scientists and fraudulently rebadging it as original research. 11/ Research grants awarded to these fake scientists are illegally obtained and the fake scientists if caught would be liable to be charged for fraud, theft and potentially jailed. 12/ Taxonomic vandals like Wolfgang Wüster typically “author shop”, with the added names being listed on the paper as authors “to add credibility” to the document (Wüster’s exact words). Not all above listed co-authors would even be aware that their names have been associated with fake science, but in those cases they are reckless in not reading or checking properly the so-called “paper” they have put their name to. Architecture of 2020: New Buildings
e-architect Selection of Key Contemporary Architectural Developments
18 Dec 2020
Major Architecture of 2020
e-architect have selected some key buildings of 2020.
Our parameters? Architecture designs that stimulate, buildings that ask significant questions, designs that show creativity and innovation.
We have considered the year’s international architecture highlights to pick out the key buildings of the year. We are deliberately not considering the complex task of selecting ‘winners’.
(Adrian Welch, e-architect editor)
We’ve divided up completed buildings and building designs (ie unbuilt proposals).
Buildings / designs are listed in no particular order

False Bay Writer’s Cabin, San Juan Islands, Washington Architects: Olson Kundig photo : Aaron Leitz False Bay Writer’s Cabin, San Juan Island This five-hundred-square-foot cabin serves as a private writer’s retreat and guest cottage. One hashtag is uniting Americans in the fight against Trump
Among the millions of vibrant, emotional images of protest packing our timelines since Donald Trump's inauguration, one simple six-letter word has stood out:
Resist.
Variations of the word have dominated social media since the president took office in late January. In the three days following his de-facto Muslim ban, for example, #Resist and #TheResistance have appeared in over 2.5 million tweets, according to data provided by Twitter.
SEE ALSO: Twitter accounts form digital army in resistance against Trump
As the political turmoil brewed, critics of Trump created a range of hashtags — from #IResist to #ResistTrump — to post alongside actions in the fight against the policies of the new president.
These posts — and the IRL actions behind them, from marches to calls to congressional representatives — have all morphed into a new social movement. At the moment, it's a movement that appears to have no set name, no particular agenda and no single organizing force.
Unlike the #WomensMarch or #BlackLivesMatter, for instance, #TheResistance happened almost overnight and through a totally decentralized collection of people with no one person or group leading the way.
But it's made it way all the way to the White House, where a giant Greenpeace banner hanging from a crane seemed to spur its popularity even more.
This morning seven activists deployed a 70-ft by 35-ft banner that reads “RESIST” above the White House. This was call for YOU. #ResistOften pic.twitter.com/CVbr9VNZBu
— Greenpeace USA (@greenpeaceusa) January 26, 2017
Although it has been embraced by a wide swath of Americans, #Resist has come to symbolize the fight for all those most vulnerable under Trump — immigrants, Muslims, people of color, women, members of the LGTBQ community and anyone else who feels they have been targeted by his policies.
"They're worried they're going to lose what [rights] they have gained," said David Lyons, a legal philosopher at Boston University, noting that members of the LGBTQ community, for instance, only very recently secured the fundamental right of marriage equality.
"So they are resisting."
We're not going to shut up. We're going to resist. Stand with @SenateDems tonight at the Supreme Court. https://t.co/Ny57jNFcnt
— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) January 30, 2017
People are also latching onto the word through efforts like #ResistTrumpTuesdays, which feature sit-ins, street protests and visits to local representatives' offices to challenge the president's agenda.
What's happening right now is "very spontaneous" and unfolding through the ad-hoc efforts of everyday people, according to Lyons, who has studied political resistance for decades. These are people making their own signs, showing up to protest because of a string of tweets, and making donations out of their own pockets.
"There's no better term to describe it," Lyons said. "Resistance is the only term that describes the great variety of actions happening right now."

Of course, political resistance is nothing new but it's that timeless energy of civic action that seems to be burning in the hearts and minds of millions of Americans right now. And all of it pooled together makes up a broader movement, one the New York Times describes as "hatched on social networks and ... dispatched by mobile phones."
"Unlike the Tea Party and the white-supremacist 'alt-right,' the new movement has no name," the Times' journalist Farhad Manjoo writes. "Call it the alt-left, or, if you want to really drive Mr. Trump up the wall, the alt-majority. Or call it nothing."
From right-to-work protests in middle America to #BlackLivesMatter demonstrations around the country, a wide array of groups are coming together to #Resist. Still, #TheResistance can be seen burning most brightly in the coastal liberal enclaves of the United States, as shown in a heat map by Affinio.

It may have its geographic biases, but the resistance to Trump appears largely united, with solidarity being seen as the only way forward.
"They can’t just care [only] about women’s rights or gay rights or the rights of black people" or any other individual group being oppressed, said Clifford Lampe, a professor of information at the University of Michigan who studies online social movements. "You kind of have to support that whole thing as a package now."
Hashtags spring up in response to a variety of issues, from natural disasters to instances of police brutality, but outside of a few notable exceptions such as #BlackLivesMatter, they tend to burn out after a period of time. #Resist could be different, Lampe believes, because few movements have affected as many people simultaneously as Trump's agenda. "There are very few events where it touches so many different people's lives," he said.
This can be seen across social media, as celebrities, politicians, advocacy groups, activists, and countless ordinary Americans rally to fight back, enlisting the #Resist hashtag to represent any expression of opposition.
As Trump continues to govern with ferocity, the #Resist hashtag continues to grow. It appears, no matter what you want to call it, The Resistance has arrived.
A Timeline of #Resist
From the first hours of his presidency to the moment he issued a travel ban targeting Muslims, Americans have been saying they will #Resist.
November: Trump is elected, a hashtag is born
Nov. 8, 2016 is a day many Americans will never forget. Jaws dropped and tears ran down the faces of Trump detractors around the nation, but within days, some had already worked up a commitment to resistance. The hashtag began percolating.

December: #NoDAPL protesters earn a victory
The battle to halt construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline, a 1,172-mile oil pipeline that will run through four states, saw many using the hashtag to advocate the rights of indigenous people, environmental safety and water quality, and to call for more progressive civic action. On Dec. 5, construction on the pipeline was temporarily put on hold.

January: The Women's March overshadows the president's inauguration
The day after Trump was sworn into office, millions of Americans showed him exactly how they felt about his presidency. And the resistance was real. #Resist tied protests across to country to a single word.

Flash protests break out after Trump announces Muslim ban
Massive flash protests at airports around the country showed just how quickly Americans will spring into action. Lawyers, translators, and activists rushed to defend those facing uncertainty under a travel ban placed on seven Muslim-majority counties. Of course, #Resist was there all the way.

Activism becomes a regular, scheduled activity with #ResistTrumpTuesdays
Following the rise of the hashtag comes #ResistTrumpTuesdays, a collection of loosely organized efforts by groups such as the Working Families Party to appeal to local lawmakers and march on the streets.

February: The hashtag continues
Celebrities, digital influencers, popular activists, advocacy groups and politicians have all flocked to the term. Their support sees the #resist hashtag find its home in the social media feeds of all Americans.
