SDL - Photographer Research; Bryan Schutmaat
Photographer Bryan Schutmaat is based in Texas, and both domestically and internationally, his work has been frequently exhibited and published. Among the many honors he has received are the Daylight Photo Award, the Center's Gallerist Choice Award, and the Aperture Portfolio Prize. An Aaron Siskind Individual Photographer's Fellowship was awarded to Bryan in 2016. In 2014, he was also named one of PDN's 30 new photographers to watch.
The Silas Finch Foundation published his debut monograph, Grays the Mountain Sends, in 2013 to widespread praise from critics around the world. It was shortlisted for the Aperture/Paris Photo First Book Award, won the photobook category in the New York Photo Awards, and was named one of the finest photobooks of 2013 by The Washington Post and many other publications.
About Grays the Mountain Sends: This project explores the lives of working people who live in small mountain towns and mining settlements in the American West by combining portraits, landscapes, and still lives in a sequence of images. Using a large format view camera and drawing inspiration from Richard Hugo's poetry, his goal has been to convey the experiences of people he's met in environments that evoke strong feelings in me while also making subtle narrative suggestions. This piece of work is ultimately a study on landscapes, small town life, and, more importantly, the interior landscapes that define ordinary men.

Aaron Reed: The Sound of Silence. Yosemite Nation Park. 2014.
Source: aaronreedphotography.com
Aaron Reed is a landscape photographer. His work reminds me of that of Ansel Adam, a another landscape photographer. I feel like I'm high up in the world when I look at this photo, as well as a bit of height fright. The fog adds a lot to this image, it give the image a larger sense of grandeur. Reed Definitely also used a large aperture number to get a deep field of depth.
Comparing this image to the one of Ansel's Half Dome, Merced River, Winter. Yosemite Nation Park. Both are taken at Yosemite Nation Park, and both are in black and white. Ansel's photo is taken at a grounded low part of the park near a river, giving it isolating feel to it. While Aaron's photograph is taken way up high, giving me a larger sense of grandeur.

Okay lemme explain this picture:
I got bored, and was watching To tell the truth. Then this happened. Now I know it looks like she is about to attack him. This is not the case. Look at how tall he is compared to her. She’s about 4′9″, so I don’t know how accurate this is but I just assumed he’d probably be taller. So in her mind it’s like ‘I gotta be more intimidating’ cause she is a china doll. Something that can easily break, and she is short. So she grabs the closest thing which is a microphone stand, and she started waving it around. This just makes her look stupid, but just let her believe. She has heard rumors of the guy, and she’s getting a bit defensive and protective of people who are close to her. So scaring him off was the first thing that came to mind.
Aaron belongs to @dragoncartridge

Post Blue Sky Wheatley Headcanons
(For future writings.... if i ever get around to it.)
Thought I'd post for those who are interested.
Because of lack of human contact, he always twitches or jerks whenever someone touches him. However, he loves physical assurance and contact and always recovers from it.
Loves to cuddle or hug Chell.
Always initiates the hug, unwanted by recipient or not.
Has discovered the sight of blood makes him squeamish, especially his own, but not as bad as heights.
Never goes outside on a rainy day if he can help it, too much water.
Cold water? Forget it.
Because he is skinny as a rail, is always freezing. Hugs Chell a lot because she is like a living furnace.
Wears sweaters even in summer due to always being bloody freezing.
Wears business casual as his everyday attire, lots of sweaters though. The only things that really fit him without being too short in the arms or too loose. Vests for more formal occasions.
Sweater vests. End of discussion.
Has to wear velcro tennis shoes for a while due to being VERY bad at tying knots due to lack of experience at hands. Slip ons work too. Maybe gets tied shoes a couple of years down the road.
Endlessly fascinated with food. Eats a lot of bread and anything Chell makes regardless of how good it is. (Which 99% of the time is magnificent.)
Constantly has a fear of fitting in among Eaden residents for quite a while, but if he made more friends that might pass...
Ends up on Doc Victoria's table more than he would like. He is a walking accident. Always covered in bandages. She honestly doesn't mind. He doesn't know it, but she's a loner, but considers him one of her only friends.
Doc Vic is very stoic, even more than Chell, but seems to get a bit more open when Wheatley is around.
Wheatley is the only person who can make Victoria laugh. Everyone who sees him do this act as if he just gave a blind man sight after having his eyes pecked out.
Once Wheatley learns her name, he stops calling her "Dr. Eyebrows". Unfortunately for Victoria, EVERYONE ELSE starts calling her that. Especially Garret.
Wheatley is the only person who has accidentally made Victoria self-concious.
Speaking of impromptu nicknames, any nickname Wheatley calls someone will eventually be adopted by everyone else. He usually does this impulsively and doesn't even remember giving them this name. He'll hear someone call Garret "Cleverclogs" and ask who thought of that and reacts with bewilderment when told it was him.
He has this weird delusion thst being smart means you are happy and successful, probably brought on by limited interaction with scientists (and his own crippling anxiety)
Has mild anxiety that can lead to full-on panic attacks if he gets too lost to his fear.
Being exiled in space has made him a bit more self-aware, but learning the truth about his function and how he was programmed (rerouter) and what he had done have caused Wheatley to become more reflective in serious moments.
Is prone to hiding any crippling self- doubt or loathing so as to save face, but crumples like dry leaves and spills everything if prodded enough (especially Chell).
.....if he had friends who respected him, I honestly believe he would become extremely loyal. He's desperate for recognition and validation by peers and any kind action by someone means the world to him after the treatment he recieved in Aperture.
He may not be fearless, or the smartest (lol), or the strongest, or the quickest, or the most collected mental-wise. But he probably has the most genuine heart. Certainly the bravest, given his fear. But he faced Her and won, id call that brave.
He always HAS to try. Even if he KNOWS he's going to fail. He HAS to try. And even with all his failures, even with all the times he's run away, he ALWAYS comes back and tries again. In some way, he's almost as determined as she is (almost, no one is as determined as Chell).
He genuinely loves to help people.
He can empathize with most people because he's had a VERY eventful life.
Anxiety, self-loathing, guilt, depression, loneliness, paranoia, betrayal, abuse, worthlessness, etc... and a lot more.
His friends tend to open up to Wheatley more than other people. He comes off as naturally trustworthy (which he's gotten better at, being trustworthy i mean) and empathetic (which he is).
Wheatley loves to learn. The only problem is he has trouble differentiating if the knowledge he learns is USEFUL.
He learns a random set of skills with varying degrees of success.
Ex) -baking from Chell- not without supervision
-gets Victoria to teach him how to dress minor wounds (gets a lot of practice lol), she takes it a step further and teaches him how to do CPR (not very good at first) and how to splint (takes a long time, but he gets it)
He can't be taught other than one-on-one because of his focus issues. Anyone who teaches him has to have both patience and sole attention on him.
He often sucks at most things at first, but give him enough time and he'll become decent at it.
Wheatley's best skill is talking. He's had a lot of practice talking to himself in the facility. Also has a natural knack for it. Makes him an awesome radio DJ, which makes him somewhat locally famous. Some people give him the moniker, the "Voice of Eaden". Most people don't even know where Eaden is.
Aaron is somewhat always watching out for Wheatley, the unofficial mark of Eaden residency.
Garret loves to see what faces Wheatley makes when he's flustered.
Wheatley has the most expressive face.
He's also a total drama king.
Wheatley will only actively try to scorn or be mean to you if he feels you've belittled or threatened him in some way, rational or otherwise.
Wishes he didn't have to keep his real nature and past secret, but knows the consequences of Aperture knowledge falling into bad hands (plus Chell had a really long talk with him about not it being safer for everyone as a whole). Also people would think he was loony cause he's human now.
If someone DID find out about him and kept it to themselves, it would be a huge relief because now he doesnt have to worry about blowing it in front of this person anymore.
He sucks at lying, so he doesn't do it often. But is surprisingly good at keeping secrets, usually too scatterbrained to think about them anyway.
He's a good singer, but he's really shy about it and only sings to himself when no one is around. The scientists would tell him to shut up when he was a core when doing this. :(
If Wheatley got professional voice training, his voice would sound like BUTTAH. Mostly sings jazz.
Wheatley's favorite genre of music is jazz.

From Gotham’s White Knight to Two-Face
Tumblr media
“You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain”
This was something uttered by the new Gotham district attorney not long after he had begun to get involved with the true low life and scum of the city. Predicting his very own future something that he probably wouldn’t have even believed himself. Happy with his life and how everything just seemed to be falling into place for his professional and personal life. Although his turn to become the villain would not be well known and his death was used to highlight the good side and not the monster that he had become. Rachel’s death pushed him to a very dark place very quickly, going from the incredible hero making such a difference to then going about avenging her death with the traitors within the police force to the mob and more importantly to The Joker.
I have watched The Dark Knight many times now and on a recent cinema trip to eventually witness it in all the IMAX glory it got me thinking about Harvey Dent. Thinking about how we don’t really talk about him that much when discussing The Dark Knight. I mean we all know why because Heath Ledger’s Joker is utterly breathtaking and scene stealing. But that is not meant to take away anything from Aaron Eckhart and the marvellous performance he puts in as Harvey Dent and then later Two-Face. I would even go as far saying it is one of the most impressive turns from good to evil as a character within Nolan’s trilogy. While some characters are walking a fine line between the good side of them and the bad side of them. Dent completely goes from one extreme to the other in dramatic fashion.
Tumblr media
Batman highlights to Jim Gordon that Dent was the very best of them and that was the reason why The Joker wanted to bring him down. The toughest target and to prove the point that everyone could be corrupted and changed if you managed to push them far enough. Obviously Dent had no idea that Bruce Wayne was Batman, so the link with Rachel was rather awkward for Wayne. Immediately Dent wanted to get to meet Batman and when the press conference is called he did not actually want the man behind the mask to step forward. Sacrificing himself in hope that Batman would indeed to the right thing in saving him.
A small joke made by Rachel about how terrified Harvey was of the trust fund brigade, but this was very interesting to see unfold when he could not cope with Bruce Wayne and his pals. The fundraiser that was thrown in his honour was something that he did not really want to do or attend. Which shows his character in different situations as he was quite happy going up against the mob and criminals of Gotham even having a gun pointed at him in court not effecting him as much as the rich socialites of the city.
Tumblr media
The panic of trying to free himself from being tied up whilst also talking to his love Rachel was never going to end well. A very cruel technique used as they both left with people they trusted and woke up tied up, with a timer and being able to speak to each other. Having to try and reassure the other that everything was going to be ok. That was far from the truth as Batman and Gordon attempted to get the locations of the pair. Falling into oil drums and being stuck on the floor with the oil, mixed with fire was never going to be a good combination, especially as he also had to say goodbye to Rachel.
Tumblr media
The build up to seeing him physically injured from the incident was rather impressive, as we see that his nickname given when he was working internal affairs was about to become very true. He really had become Two-Faced. But while visually we can see he has changed the important thing to really focus on is that as a person his spirit was well and truly broken. So much so that he would never be the same again, especially when it comes to the choices he makes when seeking revenge. I also feel it is possible that his new outlook on life links with how he looks, so with his features being destroyed by the oil people will expect him to be a monster.
Tumblr media
We instantly see him become the villain when waking up with his face melted off basically, then seeing his coin on the bedside table knowing that Rachel was not saved. She had his double headed coin, something that she did not realise to begin with when he loved leaving things to chance. Now though the coin would also become a symbol of his new dark side, one side of the coin had been burnt. This was one of his trademarks of leaving things to chance, although in his lighter days he always said heads for what he wanted the outcome to be knowing that was the only option. Now it would become a sinister game and first used with none other than The Joker, something he certainly likes very much!
Tumblr media
In that very sense The Joker had already won, he took Gotham’s real hero with a face and proud to represent and be changing the city, not needing a mask like Batman and destroyed everything about him. Taking away someone you love being the worst possible thing to happen. That is what he cannot deal with at all, after the encounter with The Joker and managing to escape the hospital before it was blown up he sets on his way to find the people responsible and involved in Rachel’s death. Picking them off one by one and letting the coin decide, as soon as he makes the first kill it is sure that he will never be the white knight again.
The turning on Jim Gordon and forcing him to lie to his family, holding his young son at gun point. That really is one very dark turn right? Especially when Batman seems to take forever to arrive. Anyway the final scene and moments with Dent really show that he had become the evil monster, the villain that he predicted right at the start of the film. Although Batman was not going to allow the world to know about Harvey Dent becoming the villain, he was symbol in a different way to the dark knight and everyone just needed to continue the good work he started.
