Did anyone else catch this in Hannibal (2001)?
Raw ambergris base, Tennessee lavender, and fleece were the top notes in the fragrance Lecter had specifically crafted for Clarice and scented his letter with.
Raw ambergris base - very expensive product banned in most countries save a few in Europe; ends up being a clue 💛
Tennessee lavender - Like Memphis, TN? As in, the last place they saw each other and where they first touched?! 🪻
Fleece - need I even explain? Lambs. 🐑
The significance of each scent, including the clue he placed, makes the fragrance a love letter in and of itself.
The scents could represent an idea or a nuance between the two. For example, the raw ambergris (rare and hard to find, expensive, a clue to Lecter's geographical whereabouts) = Lecter himself, the lavender = Memphis, their last meeting, the touch, and the fleece = Starling's lambs, the screaming, possibly asking if she still hears them, the fact that he knows about them.
Going off of symbolism alone, one could argue the wording of said letter through its symbolism reads:
I remember that night in Memphis when you told me about the lambs.
Or...
I fondly recall our last meeting.
Or he is simply asking...
Are the lambs still screaming?
And that just makes the scene where he answers the phone before killing Pazzi and Starling speaks just *sting*. He asks her, "Did you like the skin cream, I had it made especially for you?". He could be asking, "Did you get my love letter, Clarice?" And she just ignores it like he's just being an ass. Ugh 😩❤️ And technically he was by bringing it up then so it's not as if she completely lost it's meaning but still.
It's great because he does reference the lambs in the books (obviously there is SO much missing from the movie that's in the books).
But just like how we have the Burning Heart line and Hopkins hinting at the romance, we have this too. This beautifully snuck in little bit for the SOTL fans.
Even if we can't go as far to say it was a message, the fact that he used those items to make a "Clarice Starling" fragrance is still beautiful and their parallels to the first film are still there.
A lot is up for interpretation and that is another thing I just LOVE about the 2nd film.

it’s the way you deleted my meta questions for me ✌🏽🤡 — 3, 5, 16, 20 and 23 please bub 💖
3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)
that last scene in owari no seraph 🧍🏽‍♀️ when i used to write for it my lil 14 year old brain said fuck all that. i wanna get back into it though because no cap? the whole plot was trash 💀 it was a character who was from the same orphanage as yuu and mika who escaped with yuu after the whole incident happened. the groundwork was good but my execution at the time? terrible :p
5. What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?
my aot oc, yiran! she has a younger sister and she takes care of while her mom works as a tour guide in the forest of giant trees. along with that, she wanted to go to the interior walls for her studies — those small points i based off of some parts of myself, but i think she’s a kinder and more mature person compared to myself. who i really want to identify with is makoto! in my head she’s a really confident person who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to go after it? i created her based off of a thought process of “if you could recreate yourself, what would you be like?” and that’s makoto :0
16. Tried anything new with your writing lately? (style, POV, genre, fandom?)
yes! for one, i’ve been messing around with free plot outside of canon for my aot and ushi stories! it’s not something that i used to do an awful lot, or they wouldn’t be the main focus, but now i’m giving myself a lot of space to write with those two — with aot i’ll be writing about what yiran went through during the two-three year period before the training corps, and for ushi’s story i’m writing it all in his and makoto’s second year of high school
20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
king ushijima! royalty ushijima! ushijima with such an intense presence that you just have to respect his power! since i first met him in haikyuu my first impression of him was like... he’s confident with reason. like his abilities are so good that his blatant confidence isn’t even him being cocky, it’s just fact. like an emperor who knew he deserved his place on the throne. and then the match!! watching him play was the same but so much more intense! it’s like seeing karasuno try and go up against him and shiratorizawa and he said “no✨” like.... he has a power that you wouldn’t normally question and this isn’t even my bottom tendencies speaking. his power is silent but loud at the same time where he wouldn’t ever have to raise his voice — his playing style isn’t a shout but it’s just him telling everyone else that he and his team are better and that’s that. he shoots down any objection to that with actions instead of words. it’s why i love relating him to royalty so much. he’s just constantly on his king shit!
23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?
sosososo many au’s for haikyuu. naruto au, kakegurui au, hinata in shiratorizawa and kags in aoba au (this especially! i really want to do this one! me and atiq like created a whole basis for this and filled in plot points together and aaaahhh!!! ) tokyo ghoul au. aaaah there are so many and they’re always buzzing around in my head!
send me questions about my writing!
