okay so Brian found this sumo anime, Hinomaru Sumo, on crunchyroll while i was away in Bklyn dogsitting for my brother, and waited until i came home so we could watch it together. it focuses on a high school sumo club and a protagonist that doesn't make the height requirement to be a pro sumo wrestler but Won't Let That Stop Him. it's very cute and plucky so far. it's recent, made in the last few years, with a good if unremarkable art style. strong character design tho.

and then i stumbled across Aa Harimanada like a couple hours ago on this very website and. good fucking god. i don't even know how to describe this shit but it's got me hollering at the tv
the art style is....... so fucking good. i am weak for the look of old anime (and old comic books, and old western animation, yadda yadda, no one is surprised), and this is fucking b e a u t i f u l to me.

look at this shit. gorgeous. looking at it makes me want to draw.
also the fights are legitimately exciting. i've only got a couple episodes in this evening, but it's very enjoyable. the storyline is very straightforward and simple so far, and i'm really looking forward to finishing this. i wonder if i could ever track the manga down? like a translated version obviously, though i'm doubtful that exists. this seems... pretty obscure.

15/23 on Aah Harimanada and currently watching 32/43 of Mobile Suit Gundam 0079
Nearing the end of those two. Next three to start on my current queue will be NakaImo, Anne of Green Gables, and Rozen Maiden Traumend (as I already watched 2013 when it aired ^ ^;) Really looking forward to Anne of Green Gables actually! On that note, if anyone wants to recommend old anime (say, pre-90s in general) go right ahead, I'm having a good time with them so far.

Been watching Aa Harimanada, y'know, the sumo anime. And I already knew about the whole thing with the culture of stoicism and reverence surrounding the sport in Japan. But from a westerner's perspective, it's still so weird to see everybody in the show lose their shit over the main character entirely because he bragged.

Handheld Fighting Games of 89/94 - Aa Harimanada - Game Boy
Aa Harimanada is a sumo wrestling game released for the Game Boy on July 23, 1993. Based on Kei Sadayasu's manga, the game puts players in the role of Harimanada, a sumo wrestler aiming to achieve an impressive winning streak. Players engage in 1v1 matches against a series of opponents, using precise timing to execute a variety of wrestling techniques. The goal is to deplete the opponent's stamina, either by overpowering them or by strategically using moves and throws to wear them down.
The game features side-scrolling 2D combat with direct control over the protagonist's movements and actions. It incorporates elements of anime/manga art style, capturing the essence of the original story.
