what inside apple laptop charger

Have you ever wondered what's inside the battery for your MacBook? The lightweight power adapter has a lot of hardware than you'd think, like a microprocessor. This charger teardown examines the charger's various components and demonstrates how they interact to fuel your laptop. A switching power supply converts AC power from the wall to the low-voltage DC used for electrical circuitry of most consumer devices, from your mobile phone to your tv. The switching power supply derives its name from the fact that it flips electricity on and off thousands of times per second, which is a very powerful way to convert power. [1] Switching power suppliers are still very affordable, although they weren't always. Switching power supplies were complicated and costly in the 1950s, and they were mostly used in aerospace and satellite applications that required compact, lightweight power supplies. New high-voltage transistors and other technological advancements made swapping power supplies far less expensive by the early 1970s, and they were commonly used in computers. [2] In 1976, a single-chip power supply controller was introduced, making moving power supplies faster, smaller, and less expensive.

Apple's involvement in converting power suppliers dates back to 1977, when Rod Holt, Apple's chief engineer, developed one for the Apple II. As Steve Jobs puts it: [three]

"The swapping power supply was every bit as groundbreaking as the Apple II logic board. Rod isn't given enough respect for this in history books, however he deserves it. Switching power supplies are now included in every machine, and they're all based on Rod Holt's architecture." This is a brilliant quote, but it is sadly incorrect. Apple's concept was identical to older power supplies[4], and most machines do not use Rod Holt's design. Apple, on the other hand, makes heavy use of swapping power supplies and, with their lightweight, trendy, and advanced chargers, stretches the boundaries of charger design.

The charger's interior I began with a Macbook 85W power supply, model A1172, which is compact enough to fit in your palm for the teardown. The Apple logo in the case, the metal (not plastic) ground pin on the right, and the serial number next to the ground pin are all characteristics that can help differentiate the charger from counterfeits. Strange as it might appear, the safest method I've discovered for cracking open a charger is to pound on it with a wood chisel right over the seam. The metal heat sinks of the charger are noticeable when the case is opened. The heat sinks aid in cooling the charger's high-power semiconductors. The circuit board is visible on the other side of the charger, with the power output at the right. Any of the tiny parts are clear, but the metal heat sink, which is protected in place by yellow insulating tape, covers the majority of the circuitry. The key components of the charger are labelled in the diagram below. The charger accepts AC electricity and converts it to DC. The PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuit increases reliability by ensuring that the load on the AC line remains constant. The high-voltage DC from the PFC circuit is chopped up and fed into the transformer by the main. Finally, the secondary absorbs low-voltage input from the transformer and feeds it to the laptop as smooth DC. Follow along with the diagram below as we go through these circuits in more depth in the following pages. The charger is driven by an AC plug that can be removed. Switching power supplies have the benefit of being able to operate at a broad variety of input voltages. The charger can be used in any region of the world by simply changing the plug, from European 240 volts at 50 Hertz to North American 120 volts at 60 Hertz. The input stage's filter capacitors and inductors block disturbance from leaving the charger through the power lines. The bridge rectifier is made up of four diodes that transform AC power to DC power. (For a great demonstration of how a full bridge rectifier works, watch this video.)
