Things they love that make people go "WHAT" when they say they love the thing:

Abdul: The band TOOL. Particularly the "Lateralus" album. He's not as interested in the lyrics as much as the bizarre, startling time signatures and other unusual creative things... and some of their songs are angry as hell and very trauma-affirming.

Dio: Sewing, cooking, gardening, and other fairly mundane domestic activities.

Doppio: Opera and musical theater. He has quite the set of pipes. "Gretchen am Spinnrade" is his favorite song, and he can just sit at a piano and play/sing through the whole thing without breaking a sweat.

Giorno: Nine-Inch Nails. The meaner and angrier the song, the better, since he never talks about difficult things in his life but certainly needs an outlet. "Broken" is his favorite album, particularly the track "Pinion" as it expresses a lot of agony without any words. Also, Korn's self-titled album from 1994 (which, if you're interested in it... seriously look up trigger warnings first for the last trick).

Gyro: Johnny. Before he met him, he didn't think he could ever love anyone (besides his mother and siblings).

Johnny: Singing and playing piano. It was just about all he did for two years after his injury.

Jolyne: Really really really weird media (she inherited this from Jotaro). Ren & Stimpy, The Greasy Strangler, Sorry to Bother You, anything by Harmony Korine or John Waters, etc etc

Jotaro: Disco and funk music. He's been going to disco dance competitions with Holly since he was little, and they've won first place a number of times. Some might say the photos from these competitions are some of the only times he looks genuinely happy.

Pucci: Madonna's most controversial songs, performances, and statements. Also Tori Amos, Sinéad O'Connor, and anyone else who has bold criticisms towards the institution of Christianity.

Risotto: Anything cute and fluffy, especially animals. His teammates in the assassination squad sometimes have to hold his ass back if he sees a dog on the street.

"Folk music" is, in my experience an unhelpfully vague term. I could say to someone "I like folk music", to which said individual might reply "Me too!", but that person would probably being thinking of Sinead O'Connor, or The Longest Johns, or some random quirky Ren-Fair band, whereas I meant field-recordings of old Hebridean women singing waulking songs. This is not too big an issue with Irish folk-music, since the qualifier sean-nós helpfully distinguishes the authentic tradition of Seosamh Ó hÉanaí and Margaret Dirrane from whatever ditritus Sinead O'Connor or Colm MacGuiness produce. Alas, no so clear lexical distinction--to my knowledge--exists for the English tradition, especially not when it comes to sea-shanties. I am not especially fond of sea-shanties generally, but I am further soured to them by the degree to which authentic singers such as A.L. Loyd and Louis Killen are eclipsed by The Long Johns and the sound track for the Assassin's Creed game about pirates. While to some degree I suppose this is a case of me waving my proverbial cane at the youngins, I do think it an issue worth considering how almost meaninglessly broad of a term "folk music" is, even with specified as "English" or "Irish" or "Appalachian". In younger genres such as Rock, there are dozens of named subgenres with distinct styles and dedicated audiences who can distinguish themselves from the audiences of other subgenres with ease. Twould be nice to have such lexical specificity for folk music.

ren was kind of a problem child, mainly due to his home life at the time. his family decided to place him in the care of his uncle, who in turn moved to the states with his young nephew. his uncle’s been the only present father figure in his life, and ren considers the man his only family.

Holidays and the Uncanny

Hi everyone!

I'm Kelleen. You can recognize me by my very curly and very rainbow-colored hair. I graduated from Lewis & Clark College down in Portland with a degree in English with a concentration in dance. I tend to work in the children's section, but I read many different things!

Yes, the uncanny is a slightly strange topic for the warmth and joy of the winter holiday season, but stick with me. Unlike the bright openness of summer and spring, fall and winter are seasons of quietude, darkness, and slumber. I most certainly hibernate in my off time. With said hibernation comes lots of reading, and the reading I have chosen of late has been quite unnerving.

Perhaps in a run-off from Halloween season, I have been reading quite a few books that focus on liminal spaces. Even into the winter holidays, this trend continues. Books like Alice Isn’t Dead, The Hole, and Melmoth all focus on the places where our brains become unsure of the solidity of reality. In our everyday lives, Moments like standing still in the dull quiet of snowy nights, walking through the sweet perfume of rotting leaves, and falling asleep next to a hot fire with eyes slightly open all have the liminal anxiety of the unreal.

This season is fraught with the enigmatic as we anticipate the magic of winter holidays among the bleak weather of December. We take a note from Halloween and allow the supernatural to enter, suspend the disbelief for figures like Santa Clause, and look at the world with what feels like new found wonder. Something about our attitudes makes the winter season just the tiniest bit uncanny. Is there really magic? No--well you can never be sure. Do I feel it any way? Yes. 

Here are some books I have read recently that celebrate the spaces in between and the eerie in the winter:

Nova Ren Suma’s A Room Away from the Wolves does a fantastic job creating a liminal space that fits within the confines of reality. In the beginning chapters we watch as the main character runs away from home to a orphanage for girls she remembers her mother telling her about. Within moments of arriving, she begins to understand that there is something not quite normal about the home and the girls. She spends the rest of the novel attempting to unravel her mother’s connection to the girls’ home, herself, and, ultimately, reality.

Alice Isn’t Dead is a quiet engine of anxiety that paces the book steadily despite the zombie-like creatures that populate it. Joseph Fink, the creator of the Night Vale franchise, paints an almost romantic story of a truck driver traveling back and forth across the country looking for her wife. Along the way she discovers a vast conspiracy hidden along the vast highways in middle America. They are out there in the liminal spaces, constantly watching…waiting. 

The Hole is a novella by José Revueltas translated from Spanish. It is a classic in Mexican literature, a dark piece of stream of consciousness about the experiences of men in the Lecumberri prison. This prison is underground with only holes show the barest hint of lit from the outside world. Inside, men are forced into their truest forms as animals, and the mores of humanity disappear.

Other books worth mentioning are Melmoth, which I am in the middle of (fantastic!), The Agony House (freaky!), and The Incredible True Story of the Making of the Eve of Destruction (constantly had me going “did that just happen?”). I love the holidays, but I love reading weird, surreal, and sometimes disturbing books more.
