Don't miss tiefling!Astarion but personally also don't feel too much about drow!Gale? It's a racial change that would change so much foundationally about the character, not his role in the narrative but his past, his motivations, potentially his personality that it's hard to imagine exactly how it would have made him a superior character.

Unless we assume drow!Gale would have been raised in Waterdeep, completely apart from drow society and their particulars to be essentially the same character but aesthetically a clean shaven lithe handsome elf.

Then... no, still ambivalent about it.
