( SNOWFALL. )
ミ☆ it’s freezing cold in a log cabin. the power’s out. it’s time to get old-school with a fire, blankets, and hot cocoa.
⤷ PAIRING pjm x gn!reader. meant for a male reader, but pronouns aren’t used
⤷ WORD COUNT 1k
⤷ NOTES a 2019 christmas fic
Tumblr media
it's one of those blistering winter nights when the wind howls relentlessly and the streets are covered in a thick blanket of white. neither jimin nor you had checked the weather forecast and as a result, the car parked outside the rented log cabin is buried in snow. it'll be near impossible to drive, even if the high winds calm down and the snow stops.
jimin wakes in the middle of the night, rubbing the sleep from his hazy eyes with the backs of his hands, and sits up in bed. he regrets it immediately and almost yelps at the biting cold of the room, diving back under the covers.
at the sudden movement, you crack open your eyes and squint into the darkness at the blob next to you. "something wrong?" you mumble, voice deeper than usual.
"'m freezing," jimin says, clenching his jaw to stop his teeth from chattering. he shouldn't have worn such little clothing to bed.
"didn't we turn on the heaters in this place?" you're still half asleep and your brain is working slower than usual. the cold slows it even more.
"we did." jimin sighs—he's wide awake now. he peels back the covers and hisses at the cold, and when his feet touch the wooden floor, his knees shoot up to his chest.
brave the cold, jimin, he thinks, it's big boy time.
hesitantly, he puts one foot on the floorboards. he instantly shakes his head and pulls his foot back. "no, nope," he mutters, "not a big boy."
he twists around to face you, and you've propped yourself up on an elbow. "babe, can you go check the heater?"
you nod but sigh dramatically and make a show of getting up and out of bed. you're wearing socks—what a heathen—and you shuffle over to the door. you flick the light switch but nothing turns on.
"power's blown out," you report, more awake and with goosebumps on your arms.
jimin's imagination is running wild at the moment and he shakes his head to get rid of any impure thoughts. "i'll come along," he says reluctantly, not moving an inch.
you sigh and walk over to him, crouching at the side of the bed with your back to him. "get on, i'm not staying out of bed longer than i have to."
jimin scoots over and wraps his limbs around your neck and waist. his cheeks are a lot warmer than the rest of his body, and he's thankful that you can't see his face.
you place your hands under his thighs and stand up, easily supporting his weight. out in the hall, the cold slaps you and you make a face. "ugh. i'm gonna get a fire started, alright?"
jimin nods against your shoulder. he's still blushing. "can we get some hot cocoa? i'm not going to be able to sleep anytime soon."
you agree, heading to the fireplace and gently setting jimin down on the couch in front of it. he huffs a little as he lands.
thankfully, the wood is piled neatly next to the stacked stone wall tiles, which extends to the ceiling and has a tv mounted to it.
jimin watches quietly as you lay down some kindling, rip a newspaper into long strips, and strategically lay the wood over it all. when you're satisfied, you light a match and throw it into the mix.
you walk over to jimin and kneel before him. he gets onto your back and giggles a little. "d'you know if there're blankets in here?" he asks.
you shrug as best you can with jimin clinging onto you. you weave around the furniture and enter the quaint kitchen. "i think so, i'm pretty sure they're in the hallway. do you want to go get them?"
he shakes his head vigorously.
"fine, you lazy butt," you insult good-naturedly, and jimin rolls his eyes with no hostility at your childish retort. "leave everything to me, i suppose."
"i guess i could hold onto them for you," jimin drawls, a joking tone in his words.
"a kind mercy."
it's quiet as you, once again, set jimin down—only this time, he sits on the counter with his legs dangling over the edge. he studies you as you make two mugs of cocoa.
you decide to go get the blankets by yourself, not wanting to trouble jimin. the cup warms jimin's hands and tendrils of steam rise off the surface of the cocoa, swirling upwards in the air until they dissipate. he takes a tiny sip and he hums appreciatively. "it's good."
"you sound surprised," you joke as you return to the kitchen, having found one large blanket in a cupboard and tossed it on the couch. you take your own mug and cup it in your hands. "am i really that bad of a cook?"
"no, no," jimin says hurriedly, "it's just..."
"a surprise?"
"yeah."
the two of you laugh. he reaches one arm out at you like a baby wanting to be picked up.
"no. you might drop that cup on me," you say. "come on, before the fire goes out."
jimin whines and pouts but you stay firm in your beliefs until he gives up and hops off the counter himself. his face scrunches at the cold, but he follows you obediently.
as soon as you sit down and set the blanket up, he snuggles into your side and tugs your arm around his shoulders. the fluffy blanket falls over him.
"this is nice," he sighs contentedly, resting his head on your shoulder.
you look at him calmly sipping his cocoa. the fire bathes his features in warm golden-orange light and flickers gently, the shadows morphing longer and shorter every so often.
he looks so angelic.
it is nice, you think, gazing down at him.
the heat of the cocoa makes the cold in your body fade away, and you feel pleasantly cosy with Jimin at your side and a blanket wrapped around the two of you.
you want to stay in this moment forever—and perhaps you will, once you present him with the little velvet box.

Interior Design Ideas: Modern English Tudor Design
Hello, my wonderful friends! It’s great to have you here for a new “Interior Design Ideas”.
Meticulously built by Hendel Homes and with interiors by Danielle Loven of Vivid Interior Design, the architectural direction of this Modern English Tudor residence expertly balances modern and traditional elements, reflecting on the common threads of an English Tudor country house and Hamptons grandeur. The result? A casual, sophisticated home that feels perfectly at ease in its Midwestern foundation.
This modern reinvention of timeless design delights with highly refined and detailed living spaces spread over three floors and I am sure this house tour will inspire you from the beginning to the end.
Try to relax, have a good time and pin your favorite interior design pictures! These stunning pictures by Susan Gilmore Photography and Landmark Photography should fill up your boards!

The Resistance: Chapter 5
Chapter 5: The Home of Little Saint Just
Apartment 2C was on the third and final level of apartment building  327. It sat to the right of the stairs and like every other apartment it had a plain white door with gold metal markings that identified the apartment as 2C. Once one were to enter they would see a relatively tidy residence. The apartment was two bedroom, two bathroom and it was perfect because it was shared by two people. When one entered the house they most likely noticed the large kitchen that was sectioned off by a bar counter area.
The Kitchen counter was a white marble as well as the bar area thing. That bar area was just the casual dining area. It had four dark wooden bar stools that stood out in stark contrast to the white tile the kitchen, the bamboo floors, and white carpet in the living room. The kitchen was state of the art it had a double oven an electric stove, a nice dishwasher, a huge refrigerator and freezer. On the bar area counter papers and textbooks had been haphazardly stacked and a half drunk coke can sat in the middle the sink was full of dishes that Mat had been ignoring. Other than that it was a very clean kitchen with only the Keurig coffee maker and the rack of coffee cups on the counter. The bar counter was not the formal eating area; next to the kitchen there was a simple wooden rectangular table with four wooden chairs with red cushions  on the seat. There was a lazy susan in the center and there was always two placemats at the heads of the table. That was the formal dining area where the siblings ate when they weren't in the loft. Across from both the kitchen and dining table was the living room.
The living room was the only area in the whole house with carpet. There was no fireplace but there was a wall and mounted upon it was a large flat screen television. Facing the tv was a glass coffee table, a leather three seating couch, a light red wing back chair with a matching cushioned square piece of furniture to rest one's feet on. This was Mathilde chair. On the coffee table there sat a copy of War and Peace and an empty coffee mug sat on a coaster with images of various broadway playbills on them. Also on the couch were two nicely embroidered pillows and some blankets folded across it. On the left of the couch was a leather recliner that was a few shades lighter than couch. More blankets were folded across that chair. This was the chair that belonged to Jared though he seldom sat in it. He like to lay on the couch. In between Mat’s chair and the couch was a five tier cat scratching post. It was empty but was usually covered by at least one of the three cats.
Once you passed the kitchen and the living room you found yourself to two doors that faced each other. The door on the left is where we will start. This room belonged to Jared.
When pulling back the door you immediately notice the darkness of the room. The room was almost always in some form of darkness due to blackout curtains he kept closed most times so that he could sleep in when he did not have work. His room was fairly clean. It had an old roll over desk that was crammed in the corner. The roll over desk covered most the clutter but atop the desk were three pictures. There was one of his parents. One of Mathilde at age seven standing in a flower field beaming. The final one was of Jared and Mathilde on Mathilde’s first day of  college. The bed was large and pressed against the back wall so it was parallel to the door. The bed had a simple wooden tan colored head board head board and a very simple box spring frame. The bed was sloppily made. The plaid comforter simply throw over the bed and the pillows but the lumps in the bed showed that the top sheet was crumpled beneath, there was some objects under the comforter as well a book perhaps or a notebook. He had about five pillows that were not all on the bed many of them were but there was almost always at least one on the ground.
Then there were two sliding doors that opened up to his closet and in it half was his clothes and the other half was a bookshelf. It was well stocked and wonderful. It took up an entire half of the closet and was tall it almost did not fit. Mat loved her brother’s little library. It was her favorite place especially because on whole shelf was stuffed with fat binders filled with printed manuscripts. Jared loved to write and he always wanted to be a writer. His sister shared his ambition and she loved his stories. Many of those stories were shared works. Next to the closet was another white door this one lead to his bathroom. Inside there were the simple components of a bathroom. There was a vanity. The sink with enough counter space for the simple things. The mirror pulled back to reveal neat shelves with Advil, cough medicine, and other simple medications to use in a pinch. Beside the vanity was a trash can, and next to the trash can there was the toilet.  If you continued this way you would see a litter box. It was the covered kind with the gray plastic igloo hood. This was used almost exclusively by Jared’s cat. On the opposing side was the rough panelled sliding glass door that led into a shower.
The remaining space of Jared’s main bedroom was covered by a cat scratching post. It was fairly large post with about three tiers. It was made of tan and dark brown carpet. Sleeping inside the circle that sat at the top of the highest tier was a little silver tabby kitten with a bow for a collar.
She had large green eyes but they were shut as the little kitten napped. Her name was Juliet and she was Jared’s cat. The sweet little thing always slept in his room no matter what. It was rare to find such loyalty in a cat but Jared had been around her since she was born. She was one of Basest and Raoul’s litter. Also, he did spoil the thing rotten.
Across the hall was the room that belonged to Mathilde. Upon entering you could tell that it was much brighter. Mathilde had traded blackout curtains for her own red curtains with lace polka dot coverings. The curtains were seldom drawn. Under that main window was a low bookshelf made of dark wood. There was books in it many, books, and like Jared there were binders filled with manuscripts. Laying across the top of her book shelf was a fairly young orange tabby cat.
This cat’s name was Robespierre. It had been the first cat Amber had saved after her mother had put her foot down. The cat had received its name because the cat liked to decapitate birds. He was still fairly young and was nice enough. Robespierre was the classic cat. He was not mean but he only let you give him affection when he wanted it. Around his neck was a small blue collar with a silver bell and a little tricolor rosette. The cat cared about nothing but getting fed and napping. Robespierre was the shared cat but he like this sunspot the best in the apartment is Robespierre often lounged in Mathilde’s room.
Next to the bookshelf, was a small table desk that was covered in papers and books. Like Jared’s desk, it was covered in pictures.  She also had one of her parents. One of her older brother. One of herself and Sophia Scott. One of herself and her brother. One with herself and Amber and a final one of her with The DCs. Well, she had three separate frames for each small group she had taken a picture with.
The end of Mathilde’s bed faced the door. The bed was a vintage queen metal frame with an intricate headboard. It was covered by a white comforter and was always neatly made. There were also five pillows on her bed. She had one body pillow, and four regular pillows two the matched the comforter and two that matched the sheets. Resting, nestled between the pillows, was a little black ball of fur. It was a kitten. The third and final cat that belonged to the Boivin siblings.
This kitten was a sibling of Juliet, Jared’s kitten. This kitten belonged to Mathilde. His name was Saint Just. The cat had been the runt and was all black with a white patch on his chest like his sister he had green eyes but they were closed in wait of his owner, his friend to return. Saint Just adored Mat and would never sleep away from her side. Saint Just’s collar looked like Robespierre’s except it was red instead of blue.
On either side on the bed there were little white night tables with a lamp on the one closest to the window. On the one that was closer to the bathroom door there was an essential oil diffuser. The machine was not on but when it was it usually filled the room with the smell of lavender. There were things all over those night stands, books, glasses cases, a water bottle and some assorted pens. It was a bit of a mess. They were like the desk the place where she could dump her loose papers.
The closet was opened by sliding doors in this room as well. It bordered the door into the room and when you opened the closet you were greeted by all of Mathilde’s clothes. Well there were lots on hangers and the shoes were on a rack but there were drawers under many of the clothes that were hanging up.
All in all the house of Boivin was neat ish and very warm and homelike. This was the apartment Jared and Mathilde returned to after leaving the loft.
“Okay, so I can cook dinner,” Jared insisted.
“Alright,” Mat nodded and went to her room. She threw the door open and Saint Just lifted his head and let out a meow. Robespierre did the same but did not meow he simply lifted his little orange head to Mat’s presence.
“Hello babies,” She smiled at the cats. Saint Just had stood up and was making his way to the end of the bed. Mathilde smiled with glee at the adorable little thing and scooped him up.
“Hello Monsieur Saint Just,” Mathilde giggled stroking the sweet little kitten. He meowed in response. “It is dinner time you two.” She chided and carried out Saint Just while Robespierre jumped down from his sunspot to eat his dinner. Mathilde walked into Jared’s room and watched Juliet lift her little head. Mathilde grabbed Juliet aswell and then marched into the kitchen. Robespierre seemed a bit jealous of the two new kittens. That pretentious tabby used to get all the attention and his choice of where to sit. Now he had to compete with two little fluff balls that were barely litter box trained. Robespierre did not mind Saint Just because Saint Just was not to invasive of him but Juilet liked to try and take everything for herself.  That was another reason Robespierre now tended to sleep in Mathilde’s room he wanted to be away from that cat Juliet.
“Aw the crazy cat lady brings in her little loves,” Jared teased going for Juliet who was still in Mat’s arms.
“Yes, hungry little loves.” Mat smirked setting Saint Just down to grab the cat food. She dished out the correct portions for each cat and put it into their personalized bowls. Saint Just mewed and pawed at her legs not for food but for attention. “Eat your food,” Mathilde laughed turning the kitten toward the food bowl.
“That cat has serious separation anxiety.” Jared snorted flipping the grilled cheese over in the pan.
“Leave him alone.” She snapped back in return.
“My God you sound like Saint Louis with your snapping.” Jared laughed and Mat rolled her eyes. “What did you two fight about this meeting?” Jared laughed.
“Oh come on we don’t fight all that much,” Mathilde snickered sitting down at the table.
“Yeah, I know but what was it this time?” Jared scoffed.
“If you had been awake maybe.” She started.
“Matty!” He said firmly.
“Location of the next protest, he wanted it near the library, I said in Lafayette park.” Mathilde said flatly.
“That is a little too close to the White House don’t you think?” Jared said as he handed her a plate with a grilled cheese and ketchup.
“You sound like Gabe,” She laughed
“No, his location idea is more idiotic than your’s by far. People go to the library because they have homework or stuff to do. Also the noise will not make you guys any friends.” Jared shrugged sitting across from Mathilde. He opened up a beer causing Mathilde to wince.  She  quickly rushed to the fridge and took the beer bottles out and started to pour them down the sink.
“Hey!” Jared screamed. She looked at him sternly.
“I just flushed a six pack this morning stop wasting your money on beer. This week I have flushed two boxes, a bag  and three bottles of wine, one whole bottle of brandy, and 36 bottles of beers.” She said in annoyance through her gritted teeth.
“Mat, I am sorry,” He said softly.
“Yeah, I know you are sorry.” She grunted dusting of her hands after emptying the fifth and final remaining bottle.
“Mat…” He started.
“Jared please, I am tired of hearing your apologizes. You never do anything about it. You told me you were going to start getting help. I can’t do this on my own.” Mat sighed “You are a good person Jared, an amazing big brother but you are ruining yourself. I know you can do it! I know you can get clean! Please at least try, I am here to help, I promise.” Mat started softly in earnest. She loved her brother but this was the side of him she wished she did not have to deal with but she took him as he was.
Mathilde cared too much to let this behavior just go on. She worked her tail off to try and get him help but he unintentionally undid all of her efforts. It was a terrible thing. Still she never stopped trying.
“I am trying Mat...I am, I swear.” He sighed. Her stormy eyes glistening as if they were about to cry which they were as she looked at him.
“Okay,” She murmured and the rest of the meal was consumed in silence before Saint Just, Robespierre, and Mathilde left the dining room. Jared sat there alone for awhile before he and Juliet retreated into his own room.
Mat knelt on the floor and knocked on the wood paneling four times. There was a brief silence before the four knocks were returned. This was a code between the two residents of this room and the room below. These four knocks meant goodnight to those two residents.
The resident beneath was Amber and they often knocked to each other when Amber needed help. Now, Mat knocked to tell Amber that she was going ‘off line’. This was to notify each other that the other would not be able to respond. So they knocked good night and then Mat went to take a shower like she always did before bed. When in the shower she sang a bit and started to think about Gabe and Jared’s critiques. It was true this protest was too small to be that close to the White House and she realised it now. So a compromise was in order. She went to her bed where Saint Just was waiting and pulled out her laptop. Then after scouring for about two hours she picked up the phone to call Gabe. She heard nothing but ringing then his voice through a voicemail recorder prerequisite.
“Hello you have reached Gabriel Saint Louis only leave a message if it is urgent.” The flat recorded tone did nothing to make Gabriel sound more human. The only time he sounded remotely human was when he gave fiery speeches or sometimes he would start in a casual conversation. Mathilde loved when that happened.
She loved when Gabe became relaxed, when he started to talk to her about things other than reform.
Technically, she was just as guilty as Gabe when it came to becoming a political activist robot. Gabe tended to almost always act like that but when she needed Mat could become Gabe 2.0.
“Hey Gabe, it’s Mat, I mean Mathilde Brennan-Boivin , look I was wrong about Lafayette park, I still don't think your idea is effective but I have compiled some locations.”  She heard the final tone and let out a deep sigh. Her eyes flicked to the time on her laptop. 11:30. Her homework was done and most importantly she needed sleep. She clicked off her laptop and set it on the ground before, closing her eyes and falling asleep.

Balancing Modern Minimalism In Black And White
http://cdn.home-designing.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/rectangle-coffee-table-600x338.jpg
The black and white decor palette works wonders in a modern minimalist pad. The weight of dark accents effectively anchors lighter parts, to achieve a sense of permanence and balance. This is an important aspect when fashioning a layout that goes lightly on furniture and accessories, as each significance becomes key. We’ve put together this trio of tours that explore the black and white minimalist vibe in different home settings, since one size does not fit all. Join us for a visit to an angular family home with a corridor-like living room, a stylish pad for a bachelor with a love of Marvel, and a luxury abode polished with expanses of white marble.
Visualizer: Oksana Mukhina
This corridor-like black and white living room has a succinct sense of style, with each simple element taking up just a small beat of the overall layout. A slimline rectangle coffee table puts a sharp dash of white across a plain black sofa. A black pendant shade snappily punctuates a white dining area.
The kitchen itself is a short four base unit installation, which runs right up beside the TV wall of the lounge.
Wall cabinets break out of the kitchen and complete the entire width of the room. Similarly, the white tile kitchen backsplash becomes decor for the TV wall too. The light units and tiling fade behind the balance of a bold black oven and black TV screen.
The striking dining pendant light is a Moooi Random pendant light. Its oversized shade adds a black pitstop to the upper half of the scheme. Around the base of the room, a border of slatted panels looks pinstriped by light and shade. The doorway to the master bedroom has been painted solid black, to visually deepen the length of the short hallway.
Despite the pendant light’s great size, its mesh shade allows daylight to move through it to the back of the long room.
Lighting strips are loaded into black tracks along the ceiling of the hallway, creating a slick border. White interior doors and white storage fall away along the sides.
The black and white bedroom is a dreamy scene. A black feature wall drops a blanket of midnight behind a full ‘moon’ of light. Whilst the bedroom pendant light shines down on an artistic display, the bedside table lamp on the opposite side of the platform bed illuminates a handy nightstand.
A night scene is depicted more literally above the kids’ bed, where the chalk outline of aircraft and hot air balloons fly across a city of stars.
A kid’s study area is fashioned in the corner of the irregular shaped bedroom. Black and white volumes create such depth of contrast that the obscure angle of the window almost does not register.
The floor plan illustrates the irregular angles tackled in both bedrooms.
Visualizer: Vladimir Korobov
This apartment was designed for a young guy with a love of monochrome and Marvel. In order to introduce this passion into the interior without disrupting the monochrome magic, the posters were reprinted in a gradient of grey. The interior itself is masculine without extra frills. The lounge arrangement is simply a chaise sofa and a black floor lamp, though a black accent wall gives the small space big impact.
A cat bed scoots out from under a wall mounted media cabinet. A note of loft style comes through in the form of an original brickwork wall, which has been painted jet black. This is a dividing wall between the living room-kitchen combo and a bedroom.
A dining peninsula makes more of the small L-shaped kitchen installation. A black backsplash dramatises the cabinets white colourway.
Wood laminate flooring warms up the black and white decor scheme.
The wood laminate planks end at the home entryway, where they are replaced by hard wearing black tile. The darker floor treatment defines the entryway as its own area. A full length mirror with a handy shelf further establishes the change of zone.
Solid black blanks out the bedroom door opposite the entry.
A black pouf stands by a set of grey storage cabinets and a coat nook.
An enclosed balcony becomes a reading nook with a few slick additions. A platform with storage drawers elevates a small side table and beanbag to window viewing height. A bar with stools accesses the remainder of the panorama.
In the bedroom, a large wall light beams from a ribbed black headboard wall. The texture and colour density distracts the eye from a wall of white storage.
A minimalist Spider Man poster props against the exposed brick feature wall.
An ergonomic swivel chair pulls up at the minimalist workspace.
Things lighten up in the bathroom with a white dominant scheme.
A wooden bathroom stool adds a softening natural element.
Black toilet roll makes an unexpected style statement!
Elegant and understated, a unique pedestal sink fits the small space beautifully.
Floor plan.
Visualizer: Studio Light Design
Going up the size scale, this luxury home is airy and light despite its deliciously dark decor.
A grey sectional sleeper sofa strikes around two sides of the impressive living room.
The black square coffee table links with the visual of solid black window blinds around the entire perimeter of the open plan room.
Bright white beams of light hang from the modern chandelier.
Perimeter LEDs add to the fresh lighting display.
The modern fireplace is set within a commanding black chimney column. Check out ideas for a modern fireplace screen here.
Black and white artwork adds to the drama of the scheme.
White marble tiles send bolts of grey vein across the living room floor.
A modern black dining set presides over the black and white dining room.
Wafer thin dining room pendant lights slice the air.
The luxury kitchen is a vision of pure white. Clean kitchen bar stools line up against an exaggerated white island.
Linear suspension lights above the marble kitchen island dash a disruption of black.
Black window frames crisply cut the border.
Black modern wall sconces highlight industrial style raw concrete decor in the hall.
1. Black and white animal print rug 2. Accent planter bowl 3. Black pendant lights 4. Black and white ceramic vase 5. Arne Jacobsen style swan accent chair 6. Gallery wall art 7. Black and white coffee table 8. Modern chandelier 9. Black floor lamp

Two Luxury Single Family Houses With Red And Grey Decor
Two terrific tours of single family house interiors are here to show us how to tackle a red and grey colour palette for maximum impact, each designed and visualised by Tamizor. Our first luxury family home plays host to a vibrant red sectional sofa, red rug and red pendant light combination that dominates an open plan family living space. All other parts of the living area are knocked back in shades of grey and black, with light relief from wood panelling. The second tour is a slightly different take on the colour theme. White is used to offset swathes of grey and black, and only a smidge of red accent colour showcases inside this scheme.
Tour number one kicks off in a minimalist living room, with a vibrant colour block combo of a red modern sofa, red area rug, red coffee table and a red pendant light. All of the pieces hold together in one single shade of red.
The L-shaped sectional sofas hug the lounge layout around two corners of the huge red rug, facing each other in a conversational arrangement. A tv is mounted on one side of the lounge, opposite the lively flicker of the contemporary fireplace on the other.
The modern fireplace is of a linear design, set upon a black hearth with a rugged edge.
A black wall partially divides the lounge from the dining room, and obscures part of the fireplace from view of the sofas.
An unusual floor lamp lights up the charcoal coloured drapes. LED strip lights illuminate the underside of a black slatted wall panel that frames the tv.
More modern dark interior design shapes the adjacent kitchen dining area. Huge pendant lights hover as giant black cones over a black dining table and grey chairs. A charcoal coloured kitchen looms darkly behind the eating area.
Wood slat panels and doors lighten the look of the dark decor at one side of the open plan room.
Red wall art punctuates the end of the hallway.
A modern grey kitchen sink is sunken into the central island.
A black staircase design rises up through the hall, with black metal balustrades drawing vertical lines all the way from the treads to the ceiling. Daylight peeps through the spindles from full height windows behind. Huge planters grow a couple of plants inside the glass.
Across from the modern staircase, a red pouf sits in front of a large wall mirror. The pouf matches the sectional red sofas in the lounge. These two areas are marked as separate by a change in flooring design – one being covered in light beechwood planks and the other finished in a wide dark tile.
The master bedroom has a completely grey and wood decor scheme, aside from a burst of green coming in with mature indoor plants. A grey bed and padded headboard design is set on top of a grey bedroom rug. Long grey drapes pool at the window.
A glass wall ensuite bathroom follows on with the grey theme, with a grey double vanity unit and grey flooring.
On the way to bed, there is a luxury walk in closet hidden behind wood slat panel doors.
The double slatted doors slide apart to reveal a wide array of garment rails, shelves and drawers. Red seating is lined along the middle of the space.
Even the home gym gets a splash of red, in the form of a red balance ball.
Green botanical art provides contrast.
Inside the ensuite, textured grey floor tiles match rugged grey walls.
Mirrored cabinets are underlined with mood lighting in the shadowy scheme.
Our second tour features a modern living room for car lovers.
Red artwork has been hung on the wall to vie for attention, but whether the slatted doors are opened or closed, it’s the collection of sports cars that wins the award for showstopper.
A white sofa stretches out in front of the white sports cars, joined by another at its side.
Mirrored coffee tables sit in front of each designer couch, reflecting the light from huge windows opposite.
A cool floor lamp joins each of the sofas too.
Green garden views contrast with the red wall art in the room.
A grey area rug holds the whole lounge furniture arrangement together as one cohesive connected area.
A black slatted panel creates a commanding backdrop behind the tv. A white media unit cuts across the dark feature wall. More black slat panel work draws attention to the chimney breast that rises up to the rafters in the room, setting off a modern fireplace.
LEDs illuminate the treads of a dark staircase design.
The luxury dining room contains a huge grey stone table and chunky grey dining chairs.
Black slatted panels cover the dining room ceiling, with track lights twinkling through.
White kitchen cabinets brighten the border of the room.
The kitchen’s dining peninsula matches the rugged cut of the stone dining table nearby. The peninsula support leg is created by a linear planter design that rises up through the countertop.
One wall of the galley kitchen is a lightbox, glowing over the prep area and the grey kitchen sink.
The units that meet with the kitchen peninsula are dark grey to match, with colour coordinated integrated appliances.
Dual aspect green garden views bless the monochrome kitchen design.

9 Small-Space Ideas to Steal from a Tiny Paris Apartment
Paris architect Philippe Harden likes to work on a human scale. Paying close attention to “materials, proportions, and colors that let you feel good,” he creates rooms that are minimalist but also intimate and tailored for living. Case in point: this one-bedroom apartment in an Art Deco building close to the Eiffel Tower that Harden remodeled for a man who works in publishing.
Borrowing from Peter to pay Paul, the architect reorganized the 592-square-foot space: The former kitchen was turned into a TV room, a closet became the kitchen, and the bedroom fireplace got replaced by a wardrobe—all of which now revolve around a central living area with a new hearth. Join us for a look at the many ways Harden artfully makes the most of every inch.
Photographs by Philippe Garcia and Philippe Harden.
1. Paint a recessed area a darker shade to create depth.
Above: The living room’s new feature wall has a gas fireplace and shelf tucked into a niche. Harden painted it a space-enhancing green-black that references the 1930s heritage of the building (and was also inspired, he says, by the bold tones of Adolph Loos’s Villa Müller in Prague, which he visited last year).
Framed by Farrow & Ball Wimborne White walls, the niche, painted in Farrow & Ball Green Smoke, gives the room added depth and visual interest. “Green is complementary with the brown wood of the floor,” notes Harden. “Dark colors are interesting because they change color according to the different moments of the day.”
2. Choose versatile furniture pieces.
Above: For the furnishings, the owner requested modernist icons, including a Noguchi coffee table, Eames Walnut Stool, and Eames Lounge. To make these pieces work well together—with maneuvering space—Harden pulled apart the Eames lounge chair and ottoman to create two seating opportunities. The standing lamp in the foreground is the Ella from Caravane.
Harden’s advice for arranging a room is to do it by instinct: “Forget about the rules; think with your feelings.”
3. Position a round dining table in an unused corner.
Above: How to fit a dining table into a small living room? Neatly tucked into a corner, a round Saarinen Tulip Table is a lot less imposing than a rectangular dining table, and gives the room a dual purpose without feeling crowded.
4. Keep sight lines unobstructed.
Above: Eames Side Chairs with see-through bases that reference the Eiffel Tower keep the corner looking airy. So do the windows; Harden was able to forgo window treatments thanks to pocket shutters. The white on the walls is Farrow & Ball’s Wimborne White.
5. Use mirrors to enhance a sense of space.
Above: A flea market mirror in the niche adds dimension, as does the vintage Roger Prigent fashion photograph hanging outside the new kitchen.
6. Unite spaces by using a single flooring material.
Above: In the streamlined kitchen, Harden installed a new floor stained to match the apartment’s existing wood floor and create coherence.
He also introduced subtle color and texture: The backsplash tiles are Zelliges from Emery & Cie and the cabinets are two-toned: The lower cabinets are painted Farrow & Ball Mouse’s Back, a neutral stone color (as is the wall outside the room), and the upper are Farrow & Ball Old White.
7. Install wall sconces whenever possible.
Above: Sconces take up less space than floor lamps, and some, such as the TV room’s 1960s Art Deco design, pattern the wall with light. They’re by Belgian architect Jules Wabbes, reissued by J.J. M. Wever & Ducré. Another space saver: The Bruce Sofa by Zanotta doubles as a guest bed.
8. Use pocket doors.
Above: Doors require swing space; they also add to the visual busyness of a room. For a tidy division between the bedroom and living room (which has several doors), Harden installed a pocket door.
Another graceful detail worth noting: The living room’s built-in bookshelves turn the corner and continue in the bedroom. The shelves are evenly spaced and sized to fit the owner’s literature collection; his art books go in the living room niche.
9. Splurge on luxe materials in the tiniest space.
Above: Square footage gained for the living room meant the bathroom had to be tiny—but not uncelebrated. In a small space, you can splash out on materials because not a lot are required. Harden lined the walls and shower with natural marquina marble tiles and the sink top with marquina marble. The sink is glazed steel—”which allows for a very thin contour”—and is from Alape. The overhead light is a DIY, made “from spare parts: a glass globe and brass tube mounted by our work crew; it’s inexpensive bespoke.”
Above: The floor plan details the allocation of space—and the way Harden was able to carve out the addition of a TV room by relocating the kitchen. The compact bathroom is situated on one side of the fireplace, which is flanked on the other by a WC.

Before & After Home Renovation with Pictures
Designed by Suzanne Bolling of Restyle Design, LLC, this home was a complete renovation! The interior designer took it down to the studs and redesigned the space for this young family. They opened up the main floor to create a large kitchen with two islands and seating for a crowd and a dining nook that looks out to the beautiful front yard. They also created two seating areas, one for TV viewing and one for relaxing in front of the bar area, and added a new mudroom with lots of closed storage cabinets, a pantry with a sliding barn door and a powder room for guests.
This home went from outdated and dark to funky and young. Although the entire home mostly features a white and grey color scheme, pops of tangerine brings a sense of happiness to this home. By the way, tangerine will be the color of 2019!
Feel free to pin your favorite “Before and After” transformations. I did a few collages so you guys would see how this home used to look before the renovation. These are always fun to look at, right?

Creating Well Rounded Interiors With Circle Themes & Orange Accents
If orange is your colour, then we certainly have a juicy treat for you. These four bright home designs feature tangerine, pumpkin and apricot accents in no small measures. Bold murals, textured feature walls and hero furniture pieces combine to make orange decor schemes that are characterful and energised. To go alongside the eye-catching colour scheme, a stylish circle theme runs on through too. Rounded motifs are painted onto walls and modern artwork, and feature within furniture silhouettes, lighting designs and decorative mirrors. The colour and shape themes build interiors that strike a light of inspiration that will burn on in memory and imagination for a long while to come.
Designer: Ira Lysiuk   Visualizer: Anastasia Shut   An orange accent chair balances out the impact of an orange feature wall inside this living room. Charcoal paint and drapes darken down the rest of the lounge, as well as a graphite sectional sofa. Some dried pampas grass explodes a fluffy white accent into the arrangement, resting lightly in a tangerine pot.
The orange feature wall wraps around into the kitchen diner of the open plan layout, making one solid column of colour.
The flames of the modern fireplace flicker as orange as the modern accent chair, burning brightly against black gypsum panelling.
A black pedestal dining table and coordinated chairs contrast starkly against a light terrazzo floor set with orange chips.
Over in the kitchen window, orange bar stools vibe with the bright feature wall. A wall mounted black console unit works as a small coffee/tea serve area. A shelf of green plants above the window create a fresh homey feel.
Pale grey cabinets create the impression of a small one wall kitchen, but tall black units complete an L-shaped run. Smoked glass doors obscure cupboards for crockery and appliances at worktop level.
The glass dining room pendant light is suspended on a thick black strap that stylishly links it with other dark notes in the scheme.
The bed lays out the largest orange note in the bedroom, but that comes coupled with some other very unique accent pieces.
An orange frame brightens a round decorative wall mirror on the black headboard feature wall. A round bedside table, a curvy vase, and orb bedroom pendant lights play on the circular motif.
Black and bone decor provide a crisp and calming base for the bold accent colour.
A round stool couples up with a unique circular desk design that brings another pop of pumpkin orange.
Orange tiles and orange flecked terrazzo colour the bathroom. Black fixtures, shower, and elliptical mirror coordinate darkly with a black pedestal sink stand and an elegant bathroom vanity light.
Misty grey tiles calm the colour scheme.
Visualizer: Elemental Design   Orange circle motifs and rounded rectangles fill the walls of our second home tour, and a circular accent chair pulls the accent into the centre of the lounge.
The wall mounted TV is framed by a painted arc. A set of round coffee tables share the centre spot in the modern room.
Curved back dining chairs face a banquette bench on the other side of the table, to save space in the open plan.
The dining pendant light drops low to draw attention to circle motif wall art. Elliptical panels form a room divider between the eating area and the home entryway. A green plant makes a naturally fresh addition to the tangerine scheme.
A modern wooden console table compliments the tone of high shine beige floor tiles.
Aside from the indoor plants, a touch of green comes into the decor scheme via the kitchen design. The kitchen is a layer cake of green base cabinets, wood grain wall units, and a top row of pale grey cupboards to make full use of the vertical space.
A whisper of grey tints the wardrobes in the master bedroom. A wooden platform bed melds with a muted apricot backdrop.
A geometric shape mural cuts across a feature wall in the kid’s room, accentuating the angular cut of a house shaped headboard.
Citrus yellow accents give the orange elements a sharp twist.
Visualizer: Elemental Design   Circle motifs dot our third living room design through wall art, a unique sideboard design, and a nifty storage coffee table. We see yellow accents drop in again, this time as bright scatter cushions.
The coffee table with storage is used to hide a clutter of magazines and to display a modern fruit bowl.
An arc has been painted onto the TV wall in a subtle shade that causes the illusion of an architectural niche. On the opposite wall, rounded sections colour the wall with shades of orange and brown. A decorative wall clock and a half circle mirror exaggerate the shape theme.
A tasteful gold sputnik chandelier makes a graceful accessory to the dining area. The round dining table is a striking two-tone design, which is emphasised by black and white decorative vases placed on top. Orange seat pads draw attention to the black dining chairs.
A round pouf teams up with the half circle wall mirror to create an entryway vanity area.
Visualizer: Between The Walls   The last home interior is an airy white, black and orange setup where linear pieces meet rounded motifs. A series of linear suspension lights mirror the outline of the dining table.
A unique hanging chair places a ring of orange into the monochrome lounge.
An orange tapestry colours the dining zone.
Wood grain walls lighten the black kitchen.
The same bold colour scheme energises the home’s music studio.
The artwork in the double workspace is Dreamer by Eiko Ojala.
A Clockwork Orange poster makes a quirky addition.
Two modern outdoor chairs bring the orange element onto the terrace.
Modern side tables round out the terrace furniture arrangement.
A black and white rug lays the path into the bedroom.
A round notice board serves the home workspace.
The cylindrical bedside table attaches a black note to an unusual orange kids’ bed.
In the master suite, a muted orange bed set perfectly matches the orange bedroom decor.

Balancing Modern Minimalism In Black And White
Visualizer: Oksana Mukhina   This corridor-like black and white living room has a succinct sense of style, with each simple element taking up just a small beat of the overall layout.
Visualizer: Vladimir Korobov   This apartment was designed for a young guy with a love of monochrome and Marvel.
Floor plan.
Visualizer: Studio Light Design   Going up the size scale, this luxury home is airy and light despite its deliciously dark decor.
