Beach House Tour
Built and designed by Marnie Oursler of Marnie Custom Homes (recently featured here), this spectacular oceanfront beach house is just steps from the Atlantic ocean, in Fenwick Island, DE which served as the muse for the home’s design and aesthetic. Crisp whites, beachy blues, and faded driftwood serve as the palette for this light and airy home. Inside creativity is abundant with custom bunk bed, built-ins, remote controlled sky lights in the master bedroom and bath, custom tile work and even a separate 50’s retro kitchenette for house guests. This home was designed with the view in mind featuring five balconies and a spiral staircase leading to a rooftop deck with gorgeous views of the Atlantic. No detail has been overlooked for this dream beach home with ocean views from every angle.

Interiors-Exteriors: Black, Gold Design Balances Co-op Living Space
Steven Stojak likes things dark. In the span of six months, he has transformed a condo whose previous owner had painted its walls in shades of red, blue, orange, and purple into a glamorously minimalist sanctuary.
His moody but inviting redoubt is now a place where an Anne Rice hero or heroine might find respite from the garish outside world, drawing the curtains, lighting some candles, and collapsing onto a plush divan. There’s even a wrought iron gate across the living room doorway, a relic of a previous owner who was terrified of break-ins—perfect for keeping out angry villagers, should the need arise.

Stojak is a lifelong West Side resident and is thus familiar with the ins and outs of real estate in our booming neighborhood. Born near Logan Square to a police officer, he has witnessed its evolution firsthand. He confided that when he first set up shop at a rental in Logan proper some six and a half years ago, his Christmas stocking was stuffed with pepper spray by wary relatives. It’s hard to believe that the genteel, tree-lined street near the highway that he now calls home might have once raised concern among his loved ones.
Manicured and landscaped, the early 20th century buildings flanking his co-op would be equally at home in Ravenswood or Lincoln Park. He and his roommate Laura Schroader have since moved a mere eight houses down to the unusual 1920s-era co-op buildin they now call home.
“We’ve lived together for seven years,” Stojak said of his decision to continue cohabiting with Schroader. “We really like each other.”
Purchasing the condo was in fact her idea. She had intended to purchase one herself, but instead decided to go to law school. She now rents from Stojak.
Half of the courtyard complex is owned by a single owner and the other, of which his condo is a part, is set up on a system wherein buyers purchase a share of the building itself. This unique arrangement allowed Stojak, who works for a nonprofit healthcare center, to buy his unit during a period where other options might have priced him out.
It wasn’t all good fortune though; he noted that such properties make up less than 5 percent of the market in Chicago. The rarity of this type of real estate made lenders wary: He had to seek three separate mortgages to finance the purchase.
Though Stojak is thrilled with his decision, his father wryly bemoans the “yuppy” fate of Logan, which has in the past decade traded its vibrant but conflicted atmosphere for a more stable but sterile and commercial one.

Customizable Darkness
Stojak’s space, though, is anything but that. Airy and light-filled, with dark wood floors and bright white walls, it is a jewel box displaying the treasures that he and Schroader have accumulated throughout the years.
“It was nice to finally be able to customize things to how I wanted them to look,” he said. “I never thought I would have this much space.”
Getting it to that point took numerous coats of paint, a full kitchen rehab, and hours spent online and at West Elm, among other outlets, selecting the perfect lighting and furniture. The final product reflects a compromise between himself and Schroader.
“I’m the cold, black and gray person,” he said. “She’s more into brown and vintage. Anything brown you see in here is pretty much hers. We think the minimalism works to balance our styles.”

Reflecting on his color choices, Stojak remembered a conversation he had with the previous owner. Describing his plans to eliminate his predecessor’s Tropicana palate, he remembered saying, “You know you basically sold to a goth, right?”
Most of the walls are currently coated in light, neutral shades that complement the darker woods and fabrics of the furniture and the flooring. He’s particularly proud of the black accent wall in his dining room. A dark charcoal color, it is further adorned with wild splashes of gold paint. Stojak joked that the expressionistic strokes, applied with the help of his friends, were a form of catharsis, allowing them to vent some aggression through interior design.
“This place was a kaleidoscope,” he later said, gesturing at his now-austere surroundings. “I clearly have a very different aesthetic.”
Gold and black with lighter tones combines both living styles in the common space. Photo: Richard Pallardy
After hearing the story of the long farm table at the center of the room, it’s not hard to see why he might have had some pent-up frustration. Ordered from West Elm, the table was supposed to be dark gray. It’s clearly brown. And it showed up that way three separate times. Stojak is still waiting—ever so patiently—for the table he actually ordered.
“I find something that I really love and build a room around that,” he said. He loves to entertain and envisions the formal dining room as a place where large groups can gather for dinners and game nights.
Though the rich palate and crisp modern lines suggest a fair degree of financial indulgence, Stojak won’t turn up his nose at a bargain. The expensive-looking modern chandelier dangling above the dining table was a $60 find at Urban Outfitters. And the one in the kitchen was a floor model from West Elm, marked down substantially. Such cost-cutting balanced out splurges like $50 dimmer switches.
Practical Interior Design
Practicality is an essential component of his aesthetic. An avid gamer, he purchased an Ikea wall cabinet to house his nine gaming systems and more than 100 games. You would never know that such an enormous suite of electronics was lurking inside. And his sleek, black television, mounted on the wall, reads more like a piece of art than an appliance.
“I like the fact that when you walk in you don’t really realize we have a TV. I don’t like it to be the focal point of the room,” Stojak said.
The sleek, black television is mounted on the wall and reads more like a piece of art than an appliance. Photo: Kris Donaker
So, too, a modular workout system can be collapsed and tucked behind a credenza in the living room. And an all-in-one washer and dryer squeezes into a hall closet. Stojak is particularly pleased that his new kitchen cabinetry can comfortably house his extensive wine collection, which had previously been on display atop the cupboard, collegiate style.
It’s not all minimalism and adulting, though. Geeky grace notes abound throughout the space. A poster of drag queens Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova emblazoned with the query “You want some f-cking salt?” hangs above the spice cabinet. Prayer candles featuring Stevie Nicks and imagery from “Twin Peaks” perch on the window sills. And the curtains in the living room bear subtle gold triangles resembling the “Legends of Zelda” insignia. He calls it his “low-key nerd moment.”
“I basically just searched for geometric triangle hipster bullshit curtains [on Amazon],” he laughed.
The theme continues into his bedroom, which is decked out in subtly space-themed accoutrements. “I wanted a space room because I didn’t get one when I was a little kid,” Stojak said. “This was a way to have an adult space room.”
Geometric shapes on the rug and the duvet evoke the planets and the accent wall is spritzed with silvery stars. The room also draws on his love for tarot. A small black desk displays his sleek, metallic tarot deck and an array of tarot- and manga-related art. Stojak learned to read tarot at Sideshow Gallery and has since given readings at events like Riot Fest.

Bedroom Polarity
Schroader’s room, by contrast, is more spartan, with little in the way of wall decor. Her books and objects are carefully arranged on a simple, mid-century style dresser and bookcase, everything in its place. A crisp white comforter and a simple, linear patterned rug and matching accent pillow elevate the room from monastic to elegant.
For all of its current polish, Stojak claimed that he still has further plans in store for his sophisticated lair. A sconce for plants needs more greenery, dated light fixtures await replacement, and a looming electrical rewiring is on his mind. Still, after his six-month marathon rehab, he’s content to rest on his laurels for a while. He has the whole winter to meditate on these refinements, glass of wine in hand, dimmers lowered, and candles lit, the Lestat of Logan, plotting his next move.

How We Designed a Family-Friendly Laundry Room in the Portland Project
This is the third laundry room I've designed (I think?), and it's absolutely the largest one. I use the term “room” loosely since the first one (in my Glendale house) was a literal closet but a very functional and pretty closet at that…I mean we even wallpapered that sucker. But this one in the Portland Project will make all of your fluff and fold dreams come true. The space was originally being used as storage, so we decided to steal part of it to design the ultimate laundry room. They say kitchens and bathrooms sell a home…I think we can add “killer laundry rooms” to that statement, too, don't you think? I want this to be my laundry room, but unfortunately, I had to leave it behind in Oregon to its new owners. But let's move on…
I, of course, realize that not everyone has the same amount of space (or renovation budget) that we had here to bring in the same fun gadgets and add-ons that make this tedious yet necessary chore a bit more enjoyable (less miserable?). So we wanted to break down the six elements that make a room like this functional and give you tips on how you can implement similar ideas even if you have a smaller laundry room.
A combo of open and closed storage
When you have a bit of room to work with, I think a mix of closed cabinetry and some open shelving with baskets works best in a workspace like a laundry room. Here, we imagined the owners would use a hefty amount of the closed storage for household items (cleaning supplies, bulk items, seasonal goods, tools, etc.) while the open shelving and racks were for easy access to things you use more often in this space (laundry detergent, lint rollers, iron…that kind of thing).
Small space hack: If you have the space, install shelving, but bring in containers (like pretty utility baskets) to corral everything and if you don't have small kids to worry about mistaking laundry pods for candy and whatnot, decant what makes sense into clear containers to bring down the visual clutter.
A utility sink
Here's a funny “behind the scenes” story of this room: this sink right here is a utility sink, which is typically installed with mounting brackets straight onto the wall. It was designed so that the cabinet line would follow the base of the sink, leaving it to be more of an apron front, but somewhere along the way, it ended up getting installed like this and frankly…we don't hate it. Happy accident?
Small space hack: Okay, there really isn't a way around this one if you don't actually have space or an extra water source in your laundry closet or area…sorry about that one.
Another sort of “whoops” moment here is the faucet. Hot tip: Do as I say, not as I do here. While this Kohler fixture (which we got through efaucets.com) is beautiful, to be honest, looking back, it's not as functional as it could be (nothing against the faucet itself, more just about faucet-type choice). Ideally, in a utility space like a laundry room, you would have a sprayer attachment for easy reach to clean and take out stains. You live (and design), you learn.
Something we did do that I'm super happy about how it turned out is that backsplash. You might THINK that's hand-glazed tile, but really, it's a white glass tile from Bedrosians set against white mortar on the wall. It was a much more affordable (but still good looking) design idea I'm glad we moved forward on. What do you think??
Vertical storage for tall, bulky items
An ironing board is a laundry necessity that also happens to be big and kind of clumsy, so we built a taller cabinet to keep it tucked away when not in use. You can also store brooms and your vacuum (as long as it's not a cumbersome beast) here.
Small space hack: If you have little to no cabinetry, consider tucking away a smaller ironing board between your W/D (or just to the side of them where there's normally a bit of a gap), or get a hanging attachment for the wall or behind the door. There are even ironing mats that are made to be used atop washing machines and dryers, eliminating the need entirely for a board.
Designated laundry bins and hanging racks
Okay, this post isn't called “How we designed a tiny, hyper space-efficient budget laundry room” so this is where things start getting a little “extra” as they say these days. But if you're at a point in your life where you have the means and space to create a DREAM laundry room, things like “designated laundry bin area” is how to kick things up a notch. Here, we used three rolling baskets from Rejuvenation that you can easily assign to each kid when they are in charge of their own laundry, or come up with your own system that works for you (maybe one is for things that are clean and folded, one for washed items waiting to be folded, and another for dirty laundry hanging out before their turn in the machine??)
A rod for hanging up those clothing items that are too precious for a dryer is also great for avoiding that thing that happens when you're walking around your home draping shirts and skirts along the backs of chairs, on the floor of a spare bedroom…we've all been there.
Small space hack: Let's say you have a little more room than a typical hallway closet with stacked machines, but not necessarily enough to create a bin station like this one…try out reinforced hooks on the wall and hang a canvas bag with a grommet on each. It's the same idea in terms of creating a spot for everyone's laundry duties. You can also install a rod or actual drying rack on the wall space above your machines (if you don't have those wire shelves all homes seem to force on you), or directly from the ceiling to maximize vertical storage.
Folding surface
The space on top of your large, family-sized washer and dryers typically becomes a resting place for totally random things that you find yourself moving from machine to machine when you have to open your washer, or don't want things flying off during a cycle, but oh man is that a wasted design opportunity (if you have front loaders). Create a permanent surface for all your treating, sorting and folding needs.
Small space hack: This is actually more of a budget saver than a space saver, but Julie found this really affordable DIY from Vintage Revivals that you can do if you aren't building a laundry room from scratch but just trying to make work what you have. Click here for a $90 plywood waterfall surface that not only looks really good but is super practical.
A little bit of style
I can't tell you how happy that little pop of pattern and color from the wallpaper in my old laundry closet brought me, so while it might seem like a waste to add decor to a spot like your laundry room, it's really not. Here, we brought in beautiful art from Mia Farrington (a local Portland artist) and a rug from Annie Selke.
Small space hack: Add a fun paint color or wallpaper to the back wall of whatever space you have (you can even use a temporary peel-and-stick paper if you're a renter).
And there you have it: six things that really took this old storage area and transformed it into a pretty special laundry room with tons of functionality for a busy family. Let us know what you think and of course, leave any questions you have for me or the design team in the comments below.

This post is sponsored by Lowe’s. Thank you for making this renovation possible!
The laundry room in our Victorian is in the basement, and the space has its limitations. The ceiling height down there is low, there are pipes running overhead and along the back wall, the sole tiny window overlooks storage space beneath a porch, and the walls are a mix of drywall and stone foundation. None of those things have changed, but the laundry room is far better after its makeover!
The home had been split into apartments before we lived here, and the previous owners had a coin-operated washer and dryer that didn’t convey with the sale. We were thankful to have a relatively finished laundry room compared to the rest of the basement, but there was definitely room for improvement. We didn’t do anything when we first moved in besides add a washer and dryer.
I kept the same footprint and layout for the renovation. Tiling over previously painted concrete floors proved more challenging than expected, but I’m so glad I went for it. The hot water tank was replaced a few years ago with a more efficient (for a house heated by radiators) indirect water heater. I added new cabinets, replaced the old basement fridge, upgraded to the Samsung FlexWash washer and FlexDry dryer that can each do two loads at once, and replaced the gross plastic tub with a beautiful and functional cast iron sink.
The Design
The laundry room was pale gray when we moved in, and I repainted it beige. BOLD CHOICE, RIGHT? Honestly, it’s a great color for the room. The drop-ceiling is low and stayed white. I chose white floor tile to brighten the room, plus classic white cabinets. Ceiling, floor, and cabinet colors: done. On to the appliances!
A second fridge in the basement has been useful and the replacement options were between black, white, and stainless steel. I chose white for the new fridge to blend in and match the cabinets but was undecided on the washer and dryer, which are available in black or white.
I didn’t want an all-white space. That works well in a room with beautiful natural light and interesting architectural details, but when done in the wrong space, it can look either dull or sterile. My laundry room needed some contrast.
I painted all of the doors on the second and third floors black, and I liked the idea of continuing that downstairs. I had initially thought I would choose laminate counters with a marble or soapstone look, but ended up going with wooden countertops inspired by elements elsewhere in our house. With those two pieces of the design puzzle decided upon, I thought black would be the best choice for the washer and dryer set.
Why beige for the wall color? The lack of natural light ruled out white. I already had the contrast I needed and wasn’t interested in any more dark colors. I like a grayed-out blue and strongly considered it, but only if I would be painting the cabinets to match and I liked those in their factory finish. Do I love wallpaper and bold colors on walls and cabinetry? Absolutely, but not for this project. A light neutral would keep the overall space feeling open and visually calm. The pipes and different wall textures were all being painted in the same matte finish, and Canvas Tan from HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams’ at Lowe’s is a warm beige that doesn’t read too pink, brown, or yellow. It’s just right.

Tiling!
So easy breezy with that exclamation mark. Tiling! This first step in the renovation took the longest. The floor needed a whole lot of work before even getting to the satisfying step of adhering tile. We had to scarify the concrete (rough it up and get all of the paint off) with an angle grinder. I also chose to lay Ditra as an underlay to hopefully ensure a long-lasting tile job, free of cracks.
Octagon and dot tile is inexpensive and period-appropriate for older homes. I like the contrast of dark grout for a black and white look, but true black is too harsh. The grout I chose is actually a mid-tone gray, but the small scale of the tile and busyness of its pattern give it the contrasting effect I was looking for.
Tiling up to the uneven stone foundation walls was tricky. We used our new angle grinder to even out the concrete as best we could, but it sloped and waved along that edge and I kind of just picked a line and went with it. I was nervous, because of course the trickiest spot to tile would be visible from the back door.
I used a scoring knife and tile nippers to cut individual tiles, making a smooth (somewhat arbitrary) line. I smoothed grout between the outer edge and the wall so the tile wouldn’t be sharp or raised, and later taped, caulked, and painted to finish.
• Octagon and Dot Tile • Sanded Grout (Light Pewter) Posts with More Info: Removing paint from Concrete with an Angle Grinder • Laying Ditra to Prep for Tile • Tiling the Basement Laundry Room
Lighting
The sconces are super cute, and they’re affordable at $60 each! They can be installed facing up or down, and that schoolhouse-inspired shape is a charming detail. I kept the can lights that were already in the basement, but those can be harsh (and they’re uncomfortably close with the ceiling being so low). It’s nice to have lighting options and the new sconces give the room a softer glow.
• Huntley Sconces
The Sink
Ooh, that pretty sink! Ooh, that heavy sink. My husband and I got it into place with the assistance of a jack borrowed from the back of our minivan. We were concerned about dropping it into place and damaging it, the counter, or ourselves, but we made it. The faucet is so pretty I want to steal it for our kitchen, and the sink itself is 13″ deep. I clustered a few apothecary jars with a matching soap pump because why not? I like to pretend my things are old-timey. Fresh flowers are a nice touch but I’ll replace them with fakes after those die — they’re blocking the view of the washer and dryer hookups (shhh). The vintage ironstone platter was there as a backsplash for the old plastic tub and I thought it was only fair to bring it back post-renovation.
• Kohler Cast Iron Utility Sink • Brass Faucet
Cabinets
We had a plastic utility tub with no storage, and a treasure chest left behind by the previous owners. While the latter is pretty magical, it wasn’t terribly practical and the old tub was gross! I replaced both with cabinets and also added them along the opposite wall. They add a ton of closed storage and also give us a nice spot to fold laundry. White shaker-style cabinets are simple and classic, and they’re stocked in Lowe’s stores to bring home right away.
The cabinets came with finished sides and I bought the matching toe kicks, but I also added quarter round base shoe, tying it into the baseboards I installed in the room. Caulk covers any gaps, and paint makes everything cohesive. I’ve saved and repurposed hardware from other projects, but Lowe’s carries similar brass pulls and knobs.
• Stock White Cabinets • Brass Cup Pulls (Similar) • Brass Knobs (Similar)
Making the Counters
I got it into my head that I should have wooden counters to echo the materials and design choices used in other parts of our home. Great! How does one go about making a wooden counter when you’ve never done that sort of thing before? I detailed my experience in this post. With some plywood, some trim, a lot of elbow grease and some stain and sealant, I made perfectly adequate counters.
I don’t love them, I don’t hate them. Once everything was in place, they looked fine. If they ever bug me enough to make a change, I feel like I learned enough through the experience to make something far better next time (but I don’t actually anticipate changing them out).
Post with More Info: Making DIY Plywood Countertops
The Washer and Dryer
Each are two machines in one! The Samsung FlexWash and FlexDry function as a large capacity front-loading washer and dryer, but there’s also a smaller secondary washer and dryer on top. They can be run independently or at the same time, and they are making our laundry life easier!
The ability to do a second, smaller load has been so nice. I like to wash a few delicate things in there, or use them if the kids get especially messy or need some specific clothes quickly. The added dryer is especially handy because it doesn’t tumble the clothes; it’s great for things that need to lie flat to dry.
• Samsung FlexWash • Samsung FlexDry
Finished!
A crummy 125-year-old basement laundry room can be made better, and ours has been! I painted the exposed pipes to blend in, brightened a space that receives very little natural daylight with white tile, and kept the walls light and neutral to keep the shell low-contrast, punctuated by black here and there. Everything looks and functions nicely now, and you should see me bringing guests downstairs like the proud weirdo I am. “Have you seen our laundry room? Come check it out!”
Thank you to Lowe’s for sponsoring this project and supplying all of the tools and materials I needed. I’ve loved sharing every little bit of this project with all of you, both here and on Instagram. I’ve heard from so many of you that were inspired to take on your own laundry room or tiling projects after seeing me jump in (especially on IG Stories), which makes me so happy! I have a pretty solid DIY skill set, but still, I didn’t know how to do all of this from the start. I got in there, figured it out, made it work and come together, and I’m thrilled with the result. I hope you’ve enjoyed following along!

Spring Cleaning: A Laundry Room Transformation
Chloe Mackintosh from Boxwood Avenue renovated her 1964 home’s laundry room just in time for spring! Read more about how Chloe transformed her laundry room into a beautiful, functional space below!
Spring Cleaning: A Laundry Room Transformation
Our home was built in 1964, and even though we have remodeled much of the house, our laundry room had never been touched. The original linoleum and orange colored wood door was a terrible juxtaposition to the rest of our house. I’m not sure many people enjoy doing laundry, but having a dreary laundry room did not help the fact that laundry is my least favorite chore. The small room in the back of our house sat tucked away, swept under the renovation rug so to speak.
This year we decided to tackle the laundry room in partnership with The Home Depot. This renovation came just in time for spring cleaning, giving me the perfect place to store and organize all of our cleaning supplies! I am so incredibly grateful for this transformation. It has made a larger impact in our home than I ever could have imagined. The laundry room was a space we didn’t use much. Now, having a functional (and beautiful) room allows me to keep up with the rest of the house with ease.
Whether you have a large home or a small home, using every square foot to its fullest capacity is something I think we all strive to do! We are now able to store all of our cleaning supplies (I love Clorox clean-up spray and, of course, our Swiffer!), spare linens, and other necessities in the room, plus I have turned the sunlit countertop into a small potting area for my seedlings to begin to grow.
This wasn’t a space we really planned on remodeling, but doing so has made our home that much more functional. Here are all of the details!
Since we moved into our house, I have envisioned a door in place of the window in our laundry room. We have a small apple orchard on that side of the house, and having a door here made so much more sense than a window. It would allow me to access the trees (and my goats’ pen) so much easier. Plus, I knew it would be an easy swap because the window size was standard door width.
You can see from the photos that a door here just makes sense, can’t you? If you have a space in your home where you’d like to add a door – know that it isn’t a major process! Likely, there is already a header in place, and a hole in the wall leading to the exterior, making it a fairly easy improvement.
We started by removing the closet space, existing cabinets, and a small drip-dry closet. The drip-dry closet was a huge amount of wasted space, and the existing closet was constantly cluttered. This is the second time I’ve opted to remove a closet in a home. And each time, I love the result. Closets can become wasted square footage very easily. The space can often be utilized in a better way by adding cabinets or built-in shelving. By removing the closet in our laundry room, we were able to add an additional wall of cabinetry, doubling the storage in the room!
Once the existing cabinets were out, we removed the linoleum floor, and were left with a fairly large room for me to create my dream laundry room!
Home Depot’s quick-ship cabinets are ready-built and were the perfect fit for this project. The shaker style matches that in our kitchen and the color is spectacular. I almost went with the white color, but opted for gray, and am so very glad I did. The cabinet color combined with the Martha Stewart Bedford Nickel cabinet hardware is the perfect variation of gray tones! The color is just right in every way. It would work well in any style home. I couldn’t be happier with it!
We added an apron front sink from Kohler, which is something we also have in our kitchen. It is such a classic style, and so incredibly dreamy. I initially thought I might like a bridge faucet in the laundry room, but we ended up going with a semi-professional faucet from Kohler, which is exclusive to The Home Depot. When I first opened the box I was so surprised by the quality for the price. This faucet seems like it should have cost thousands of dollars! It is very industrial, yet designed beautifully. When form and function combine, it is a very magical thing.
While we have concrete countertops in our kitchen, I wanted something easy to care for in the laundry room so we went with Statuario from Silestone. I couldn’t be happier with the countertops, which have the faintest veins running throughout a creamy white base. The countertop resembles a beautiful Carrara marble without the extra care involved. It is perfect for kitchens and laundry rooms that get a lot of use, especially by children!
In lieu of our dated linoleum flooring, we added simple large slate tile. This tile is one of my favorites. I love using it in laundry rooms. It is so classic and inexpensive. Plus, it is generally in-stock at most Home Depot stores making it an easy weekend project. We added an enhancing sealant to darken the tile, which I feel, gives it a more luxurious look.
I can’t forget to mention the beautiful GE washer and dryer that are now my most loved appliances. We purchased our old washer and dryer while in college, and to say they were ‘broke-in’ is an understatement. Living on a cattle ranch means our clothes are constantly extremely dirty, so a very good washing machine is imperative! I love the programmable stain removing settings and customizable water level settings on the washer. Our clothes have truly never been so clean!
Like our washer and dryer, our old Dyson was purchased in college. It was very well loved, but I think the time had come for an upgrade. Our old Dyson was the mini version, and although it was mini, it was mighty! Dyson vacuums are wonderful, and we are very loyal customers! Our house is constantly dusty and dirty from muddy cowboy boots and dirty jackets being brought into the house. Our vacuum is something I use nearly daily. We love our new Dyson Animal 2 for everything from vacuuming the floors to the couches. It is amazing what powerful suction this vacuum has, and I love that it was created specifically for pet hair! I am not sure if it normal to be *this* excited over a vacuum, but this Dyson is worthy of the excitement!
The cherry on top of the project is all of the wonderful cleaning supplies I can now house in the laundry room. We have abundant storage in the cabinet drawers, and the tall cabinets in the corner perfectly fit a vacuum, broom, and other tall cleaning supplies! I love having a devoted space for these items. My best organizational tip is to make sure everything you own has a dedicated space in your home. By practicing this, you won’t ever have to question where you put something. And your entire family will know where to put an item back once they are finished using it.
Our laundry room is now a treasured space in our house – I am tempted to pull up a stool and use it as my office for a bit because it is so calming and tranquil! The new door gives us access to our backyard, and the amount of storage is incredible! The built-in cabinets are so much more functional than a closet, and the beautiful slate tile is the perfect contrast to the white walls. Having a well-designed and organized laundry room not only helps me stay on top of our laundry but also helps me tackle day-to-day cleaning throughout our house.
I documented the entire remodel process on my blog, so if you’re looking for a detail that I didn’t touch on in this blog post, visit me at Boxwood Avenue! I am so grateful for this new space in our home; having a beautiful place to do our laundry and house our cleaning supplies has made my life easier and chores much more fun! The Home Depot has everything you need to tackle your spring cleaning to-do list from appliances to cleaning supplies; they’ve got you covered. Now, let’s get cleaning!

Spring Cleaning: A Laundry Room Transformation https://ift.tt/2F4nWuD

Interior Design Ideas: Nantucket Shingle Style Home
If you’ve read my blog for a few years, you probably will know that I love classic homes and this Nantucket shingle home built by Orren Pickell Building Group is a home that is sure to not go out of style anytime soon.
Here, the builder share the insights of this beautifully designed home: “Honoring their East Coast roots and incorporating a cozy farmhouse feel guided the design of this gracious shingle home.
After scouring the area for land that would offer the right combination of privacy and views, the family selected this wooded, ten-acre parcel. The Pickell team positioned the home at the high point, making sure to maximize the expansive vistas on all sides.
Architectural details such as a cupola and shingled exterior provide the Nantucket aesthetic the family wanted, while the interior has the warm, lived-in feel they desired. The chicken coop, supplying fresh eggs every morning, fits right in.
Broad pine planks, rough-hewn beams in the dining room and reclaimed timbers in the family room add to the farmhouse character and complement the family’s rustic American antiques. However, custom cabinetry and an open first-floor plan make the home eminently livable today.
An eat-in kitchen, formal dining room and living room flow easily from one to another, creating an ideal space for entertaining. In addition, the first floor features an expansive master suite with indoor and outdoor showers, office space, and a large mudroom centered around a vintage workbench.
The lower level is home to an antique bar the owners found in a shop in Indiana, as well as a gym and a soccer practice area (complete with reinforced drywall to prevent damage). Three more bedrooms complete the layout upstairs.
Throughout the interior, warm colors, extensive wood, natural light and comfortable furnishings make the 5,000 home feel friendly and intimate, just as the family dreamed of.”
Pin your favorite interior design photos and have a great time, my friends!

Interior Design Ideas: Acreage Modern Farmhouse
After sharing a small lot modern farmhouse last week (thank you all for always helping the blog grow by sharing the posts with your followers on Pinterest and Instagram – you guys really make this community and I appreciate each and every one of you!), I honestly couldn’t be happier today sharing a home that is definitely gorgeous but also feels extra special because it was designed by a dear interior designer that I admire both professionally and personally. Get to know Laura Davidson of Dwellings a little better… I’m sure you will appreciate her talent as much as I do!
“Hey there! My name is Laura Davidson and I’m an interior designer based in Grand Rapids Michigan, with a design studio Dwellings. Thank you so much for taking the time to peruse this project!
Our client purchased 76 acres of land in 2013, and on it resides the original barn, full of character and set the tone for the development of the property. We remodeled the barn with white board and batten, refurbished the original metal roof and added massive gray barn doors. Fast forward two years, and the team is assembled for building this family country estate. Visbeen Architects handled the architecture, and Tim Nagelkirk from Colonial Builders partnered with me to take the plan from paper to this wonderful family home.
We were honored to be selected as the 2017 Cosmopolitan Home of the Year. It was a labor of love for a wonderful family!”
See the details shared by this amazing interior designer below:

The homeowner has a large family and I wanted to offer them a family gathering area, therefore the island offers seating on both sides.” – Laura Davidson of Dwellings.
