Genuine question but what is it with The Count of Monte Cristo adaptations that almost always lessen the female characters's unique traits and important moments even when they're marketed as "modernized"? You'd think that 21st century writers would know how to keep the characters' defining moments while bettering lesser aspects, yet they're still outdone by Alexandre Dumas somehow.

#the count of monte cristo #the 2024 film in particular is rife with so many issues regarding three characters and every time I think about it #I still can't believe it #Mercedes for one thing has her backstory altered #again....#haydee is at least more independent but then they swapped her entire revenge plan and move against Fernand for #a seduction plot with her and Albert which frankly makes Edmond look like a complete idiot #Villefort's sister Angele is treated horribly......he apparently sells her out to a brothel???#and lmao her only role in the film is to be saved by Edmond #find out about Villefort's illegitimate child #then be sold off and then die when she's telling Edmond this
