Under the Radar: SurrealEstate

Following a real estate agency Roman Agency, this real estate not only lists houses but also cleanses them of negative entities, spirits, and monsters.

SyFy aired this series in 2021 and unfortunately canceled it after one season. Or so it was thought, SurrealEstate was resurrected in May 2022, and it was un-canceled and green-lit for a second season, which will air sometime in 2023.

SPOILERS, obviously.

THINGS THAT GO BUMP

Luke Roman (Tim Rozon) is the boss of a particular real estate business, The Roman Agency. Not only do these agents sell houses, but they also deal with the beyond. The Roman Agency specializes in selling and helping those unable to sell their houses without a much-needed cleanse.

The Agency is small but close-knit and scrappy. It consists of Luke, boss man extraordinaire, Father Phil Orley (Adam Korson) a lapsed priest, August “Auggie” Ripley (Maurice Dean Wint) the tech king, Zoey L’Enfant (Savannah Basley) the office manager, and new-comer Susan Ireland (Sarah Levy). Susan originally came from another estate agency, and unfortunately, is a fish out of the water with this new group of agents. She is kept in the dark about the Agency’s specialties, but does know it by reputation.

Luke and Susan take on their first job together at the Lenore household, who are at their wits’ end with objects randomly flying around their house. Believing that the house is haunted by a poltergeist, they send in Auggie and Phil, who reveal that all their tests come up negative. As things escalate at the Lenore house, Luke has taken a special interest in another holding, the Donovan household.

The Donovan house is special and immensely haunted. Off-the-charts metaphysical disturbances plague the house, and its current occupant, Meghan (Tennille Read).

As The Roman Agency fights demons, ghosts, and possessed houses, the Donovan house makes reoccurring appearances because of the sentimental attachment it has to Luke. Years previously, Luke’s mother went into the house and never left. Luke has seen her ghost several times lingering in the house, and she is not a nice person. But Luke’s father (also a ghost) says that she was a sweet and kind person, but didn’t seem like she could handle Luke’s gift of seeing the other side. Leaving him and his father behind years before.

The season comes to a head at the Donovan house, which has been gaining strength steadily thanks to the misguided attempts by the Roman Agency. The portal in the house, which they thought allowed ghosts and spirits in, actually allowed them to cross over. Because they closed the portal in episode one, all of these ghosts and spirits haunted the house in agony, unable to leave. The house was able to make a personified incarnation of itself thanks to the lost souls stuck within its walls. Auggie, Zooey, Susan, and Phil all encounter lost loved ones, a wife, a mentor, a father, and an ill-fated sweetheart. Luke also sees his mother, or rather his sister.

Luke was a twin, and the woman he believed to be his mother, is actually his sister who lost her life when Luke’s umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. Because she died during Luke’s birth, his abilities came from being born in the shadow of death. His twin wants to switch places with him, and the only way for that to be achieved is that he dies. As she strangles Luke, in the basement, the crew is able to open the portal and all the trapped souls are sucked into it, including Luke’s sister.

The Donovan house is purged of its ghosts, and the crew stumbles outside, grateful to be alive. However, Luke distances himself from everyone. Why? He’s lost his ability to hear and see the spirits that had attached themselves to him since he was a child.

RESURRECTED FROM THE GRAVE

The paranormal drama was canceled originally. Ratings and viewership seemed to have been the main reason for its cancellation. George R. Olson, the creator of SurrealEstate, tweeted in October 2021 the unfortunate news that SyFy wouldn’t be moving forward with a season 2, but to not give up hope and they were looking for a new home for the paranormal procedure.

Hulu began streaming season 1 of SurrealEstate starting October 6 and it was revealed on May 2022 that SyFy had decided against officially canceling SurrealEstate when it talked about new and returning series in an article.

CONCLUSION

I rate SurrealEstate 3.9/5, I’ve loved Tim Rozon since his days on Wynonna Earp as the immortal gunslinger Doc Holliday, which was also unfortunately canceled after its fourth season by SyFy. No worries, Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna) guest starred in episode three and played a fanatic homeowner trying to sell her cottage (such a fun episode).

SurrealEstate is character-driven, and with a heavy-hitting cast, the characters are believable and loveable. Even with the extra bits thrown in (Roman’s ability to see ghosts, and Ireland’s telekinesis and pyrokinesis) and the haunted houses, the heart is still there and beating strong. It was sad that at first it looked like we would be leaving on such a cliffhanger, with Luke losing his powers and knowing his mother was alive somewhere.

SurrealEstate is ALIVE and will be airing on SyFy sometime in late 2023. As of October 12th, you can catch up on season one on Hulu.

Random TLG OCs

Felt like making a compilation of OC concepts that I've long kept in storage until I decided to bring them to life. Felt like drawing/posting them now because I wasn't sure when they were ever gonna pop up at any point in any drawings I've made in the past 3 years, so I ought to show them now

Bios for each character below:

Nyumbu ("wildebeest"): Created out of wonder as to why wildebeests are suspiciously seldom seen in TLG, especially since they're a crucial animal involved in the infamous stampede that killed Mufasa in the first movie. Nyumbu is the grizzled, cynical leader of the Pridelands' wildebeest who is haunted every day by his herd's partial responsibility in Mufasa's death. Nyumbu ascended to leadership after his leader and many of his herd had been overhunted by the hyenas during Scar's Reign, adding grief to his guilt. After years of hesitance, he finally attends a Savannah Summit to confess to Simba how sorry he is about taking part in Mufasa's gruesome death, and reveals that he'd received his broken horn after falling over and being trampled by his herd, and found out about Mufasa's body when he'd been the last one to follow after the herd (yes, he's THAT wildebeest in the movie). Simba assures him that he is not at fault for what Scar and his hyenas are truly responsible for. Nyumbu and Simba grow to befriend each other over their similar stories.

Sauti ("sound"): Conceptualized all the way back in 2019 and finally drawn in 2022, Sauti is a wild dog pup derived from an old concept made with a friend online. Sauti would be a friend and interpretor to a deaf cub of Kovu and Kiara's that we never really got to making. There's a criminally little amount of wild dog representation in TLK, let alone any animation. I mean I get it, how does one keep that complex spot pattern consistent on a character (unless you're doing that rigged ToonBoom style of TLG). I feel like a character like Sauti would be a totally plausible character in a TLK installment for the sake of scoring cute points, Disney's pretty good at puppy characters lol

Fukiza ("spray"): Yet another concept made with the same friend with the same intention to flip most roles each animal has in media on their heads. Fukiza is an Egyptian cobra with the ability to spit venom from her teeth. She exhibits this when she's one day frightened by Tazama, temporarily blinding her with venom directly to the eyes by accident. Contrary to the Guard's biased fears brought on by their awareness of cobras' involvement in the Mark of Evil, Fukiza proves she is a harmless cobra who simply just can't control her venom very well. Fukiza becomes the Guard's snarky friend who loves to create fragrances from flowers (serving the other meaning to her name). Her reference way drawn all the way back in 2019 when she was conceptualized.

Kelele ("howl", "noise"): An Ethiopian wolf who'd be part of the villain line-up against Vitani's Guard. She'd have supersonic howling powers that would rival Vitani's very own aerokinetic/geokinetic Roar. I can't remember if the concept was based on those wild dog paintings in TLG having those lightning bark powers or if we were just coming up with a rival to the Roar in general. (Conceptualized in 2019 and finally drawn in 2022)

Kwanza ("first"): The Mask Maker. Kwanza was an ancient mandrill from Askari's time, making him the first Royal Mjuzi. Before becoming a knowledge-keeper (and subsequently establishing that task for generations of Mjuzis to come), Kwanza solely took interest in medicine and healing, relying on supernatural and at times impractical and slightly deranged (but by no means sadistic or abusive) ways of treating animals in need. Before considering that it was maybe Rafiki who'd made the Moja Kwa Moja Stones, I was going to have Kwanza be the one to create them. His appearance and practices are based on stereotypical (and... possibly harmful) traits of the "witch doctor" archetype in media. (Conceptualized in 2020(?) and finally drawn in 2022)

Mrefu ("tall") and Ndefu ("long"). Some twin giraffe brothers I made up on the spot when playing around with Google Translate. Was looking for hypothetical giraffe names by putting in some words describing giraffes, ended up getting some rhyming names and thought of a pair of twins. I can imagine these two being very minor supporting characters, probably just there to perform tricks or help people reach things, maybe get their necks tangled up over some kind of predicament and have the Guard rescue them. I based their appearances on Dylan and Cole Sprouse because I wanted some notable twins as a reference for their personalities, dynamic, and design. I can imagine Disney pulling some guest-star thing where they'd have these two be voiced by some former Disney alumni

Ngurumo ("thunder"): When planning out a lineup of villains for Vitani's Lion Guard, a friend and I settled on this idea of changing up that overdone "carnivore vs carnivore dispute" trope along with that tired "carnivores other from the main lion pride are inherently mean and evil" trope because it ignores the lesser-known dangerousness of IRL herbivores (those guys are heavy and covered in hooves and horns for a reason, they're built to defend themselves from carnivores), we came up with Ngurumo, a presumptuous, unthinking rhino who rallies an uprising within the herbivores, instilling anti-carnivore ideas such as questioning a lion's inherent title as "king of the jungle" and worsening the already prevalent notion that carnivores are dangerous murderers as if herbivores aren't just as capable of the same thing. While Ngurumo's natural fear of predators is understandable, his motives to rid the Pridelands of them as a means to keep the prey "safe" very much breaks the Circle of Life as it causes competition over grazing lands and eventual starvation. (Conceived and drawn all the way back in 2019)

LONDON – Two heated rivalries will come to a head Saturday, Sept. 10 in a historic championship doubleheader at the O2 Arena in London. The previously announced main event will see two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields, the WBC/WBA/IBF/Ring Magazine middleweight champion, aim to once again become undisputed at 160 pounds by facing longtime rival and WBO titleholder Savannah Marshall. Shields and Marshall faced off as amateurs, with Marshall edging Shields by decision at the 2012 AIBA Women’s World Championships in Qinhuangdao, China. Shields went 77-1 as an amateur and is the only female boxer to win undisputed titles in two weight classes. In the co-feature, Mikaela Mayer will look to get one step closer to becoming the first undisputed champ in her division by putting her WBO/IBF/Ring Magazine junior lightweight titles on the line against WBC champion Alycia Baumgardner. A total of seven world titles and two Ring Magazine belts will be on the line. Promoted by Salita Promotions and Boxxer, in association with Top Rank, Shields-Marshall, Mayer-Baumgardner, and undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ Mayer (17-0, 5 KOs) is a Los Angeles native who achieved international recognition when she represented the U.S. at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The following year, she signed with Top Rank and unleashed an impressive run of victories, including a one-sided decision over Ewa Brodnicka in October 2020 to capture the WBO 130-pound title. In 2021, she unified the WBO and IBF titles in an action-packed slugfest against Maiva Hamadouche, which also earned her the Ring Magazine belt. In her last outing, she retained her titles with a decisive win over former champion Jennifer Han. Mayer is confident that she will take a positive step forward toward becoming undisputed champion. You can bet on it.” Baumgardner (12-1, 7 KOs) is a five-year pro who burst onto the scene by traveling to Sheffield, England, to challenge WBC champion Terri Harper. Though fighting on enemy turf in front of thousands of British fans, the native of Fremont, Ohio landed a perfectly timed counter right hand that knocked Harper out on her feet. Baumgardner then made the first defense of her crown in April with a shutout decision over former unified world champion Edith Soledad Matthysse. After months of exchanges on social media, Baumgardner did not mince her words about Mayer. Baumgardner said, “When we are both gray and old, Mayer is still going to be having Alycia Baumgardner flashbacks. When she is lying horizontally in the ring, Mayer will think back to the first time my name left her mouth and she’s going to wish it hadn’t.
