NEW YORK — All around Antti Raanta was chaos and pressure and tension and screaming fans and thunderous music and flashing lights.

There was 3:44 left in the third period of a playoff game at Madison Square Garden, with his Carolina Hurricanes down a goal and on the verge of dropping to 0-4 on the road in this postseason. Raanta had just swallowed up an Artemi Panarin wrist shot to keep his guys within striking distance, and the last television timeout of the game allowed him a brief respite — a chance to take a breath, to push out the noise, to center himself, to brace himself.

Instead, Raanta looked up at the scoreboard, and the most peculiar thought hit him.

Hey! It’s Dancin’ Larry!

“You just get a little smile on your face,” Raanta said. “It was my first time playing against the Rangers in this building. So it was kind of funny, remembering all those TV timeout things. You just look around and you’re kind of like, ‘Hey, this is awesome.’”

Raanta was smiling as he said that, of course. Seems like he’s always smiling. That’s who Raanta is — the happy wanderer, the joyful journeyman. He’s the guy who spent his rookie season cracking up his teammates in Chicago with tales of his misadventures in the Finnish army, sending Patrick Sharp into hysterics as he described the time he got his entire squadron “killed” when he got lost on a training mission with a very real rocket-launcher strapped to his back. He’s the guy who had the Coyotes howling as he harped on the scorpion infestation that eventually drove him and his wife from his first home in Arizona. A big, boisterous personality with a big, boisterous voice, Raanta’s always been everyone’s favorite teammate.

But now, at 33 years old, he’s finally becoming something more.

Leaning against a wall outside the visitor’s dressing room at the Garden on Monday afternoon, Raanta was trying to put it all in perspective — the early brilliance and ugly breakup in Chicago, the fun but ultimately unfulfilling years as Henrik Lundqvist’s backup in New York, the endless string of injuries in Arizona, the flirtation with retirement last spring, and now his unlikely ascendance to Conn Smythe candidate in the wake of Frederik Andersen’s lower-body injury suffered a month ago.

After all this time, after all these teams, after all those rehabs, after all the games he watched from the back of the bench or on a stool by the Zamboni entrance as a permanent backup, Raanta finally is having his moment. Through nine playoff games, he has posted a .939 save percentage, trailing only Dallas’ Jake Oettinger and St. Louis’ Jordan Binnington. He has saved 8.91 goals above expected, trailing only Oettinger, Edmonton’s Mike Smith and the Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin. He’s playing like he always knew he could, but never thought he’d get the chance.

In true Raanta fashion, he’s savoring every minute of it. And yes, that includes checking which celebrities are sitting rinkside at the Garden.

“You just have to enjoy it,” Raanta said. “This is what you dream of. You want to play these games and you kind of want to see that you can do the job.”

Raanta turned 33 two weeks ago. This birthday was a bit more festive than the last.

A year ago, hard as it is to envision, Raanta had lost his smile, and was losing his will to keep battling through the injuries that had derailed his career. He chuckles a bit now as he lists the various ailments that plagued his four seasons in Arizona, almost amused by how unlucky he was. But there was nothing funny about it at the time. He got rear-ended on the highway by an SUV going 40 or 50 mph and suffered whiplash. He had groin issues. Hip problems. Blew out his knee. He played just 12 games in 2018-19 in the first year of the biggest contract of his career. He played just 12 games again last season, the final year of that deal.

The last straw last season was a seemingly innocuous groin tweak that he thought was nothing. He went for an MRI and he was told he’d miss at least three weeks. “You’ll miss at least three weeks” had been the story of Raanta’s career, and he was just ready to be done with it all.

Hockey is fun. Perpetual rehab is not.

“I’m like, ‘This is not happening,’” he said. “That’s when I almost lost the passion for the hockey. When the season was over, I was like, ‘I don’t know if I want to do it anymore.’”

But it gnawed at Raanta that he knew he could do the job, if his body would allow, if his coaches would allow. He was brilliant as Corey Crawford’s backup in Chicago, but Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville fell in love with Scott Darling’s size and Raanta had to watch as a frustrated Black Ace as Darling, not Raanta, came to the rescue in the first round of the 2015 playoffs against Nashville. He knew he’d never supplant Lundqvist in New York, but he soaked up all he could from one of the best goalies of all time and made the most of his limited playing time. Arizona was his chance to be a No. 1, but the injuries got in the way and he lost the job to Darcy Kuemper.

Yet every time Raanta got a chance, he ran with it. Since his rookie season of 2013-14, among goalies with at least 100 starts, only Ben Bishop (.921) and Juuse Saros (.920) have a higher save percentage than Raanta’s .919. Raanta is tied with Crawford, Andrei Vasilevskiy and Tuukka Rask, and just ahead of Carey Price, Roberto Luongo and Kuemper.

That’s lofty company. And that just bothered him all the more when he considered the incomplete nature of his career.

“I think that’s the worst part,” he said. “Obviously, when you get hurt, it’s always tough, and it doesn’t matter if your numbers are good or bad. But I think it’s a little bit more frustrating when you know that you can play at a high level.”

So when Raanta’s agent, Kevin Epp, called him up in mid-June and said there was interest, the goalie perked up a bit. When Epp told him Carolina was one of those teams, suddenly he was smiling again.

“That’s a really good team, and they’ve been in the playoffs and they’re so close to getting to the end,” Raanta said. “I was thinking, ‘man, if they really want me, that’s something I really want to do.’ After that, the switch just turns in your head and now I’m going to do whatever I can to get there and do my best.”

But once again, Raanta found himself as the backup, playing just 28 games to Andersen’s 52. This time, however, it was the other guy who got injured, as Andersen suffered a lower-body injury making a save against Colorado on April 16. Suddenly, Carolina’s Stanley Cup hopes rested on Raanta’s shoulders.

Eight days later, Raanta hurt himself again, leaving early in a 5-2 win against the Islanders. For once, though, the hockey gods were with him. It turned out to be nothing major. And he hasn’t relinquished the net since.

“He’s been great all year, actually,” Sebastian Aho said. “Freddie played a little bit more than him in the regular season, and maybe Freddie got more attention. But every time (Raanta) was in, he was great for us. We’ve been very fortunate to have very good goalies all year, and I’m not surprised the level he’s playing now. The team has a lot of confidence in him.”

The old saying is that goalies need to have a short-term memory. That’s not entirely accurate. They don’t need to forget goals, they need to withstand them, to survive them, to bounce back from them. That’s where Raanta’s relentlessly upbeat attitude comes into play. In Game 3, former teammate Chris Kreider beat Raanta from a sharp angle, top-shelf on the far side. It was an absolutely sick shot, perfectly placed and nearly impossible to expect. But Raanta was mad at himself, all the same. For about four seconds.

He got over it — hey, giving up a goal is nothing compared with losing your job, or blowing out your knee, or getting rear-ended on the highway — and stopped the last 15 shots he faced, keeping Carolina in it and only getting beaten because Shesterkin was a little bit better on this day.

“You would never know he’s in his first playoffs,” said teammate Seth Jarvis, who is in his own first playoffs. “He’s just super relaxed and calm and collected.”

Raanta has won the Stanley Cup before. We should probably point that out.

But he hasn’t won the Stanley Cup. Raanta was the primary regular-season backup goaltender for the eventual 2015 Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks. He had been relegated to third-string with Darling’s ascendance by the end of the season, and didn’t dress in the playoffs. It ended badly, with Raanta telling a Finnish newspaper that he was so bitter about his situation that he was openly rooting for the Blackhawks to get swept in the first round by Nashville so he could just go home. Raanta later said his words were misconstrued, and that he was just trying to be emotionally honest about how difficult it was to watch his team play without him, and that his frustrations lasted for maybe a day, and that he thoroughly enjoyed the whole postseason ride with his teammates, even as a Black Ace.

But the damage was done. The Blackhawks ended up leaving Raanta’s name off the Stanley Cup — unusual given he was the backup for most of the regular season — and petitioning instead to have Daniel Carcillo (who didn’t play in the playoffs) and Joakim Nordstrom (who got in just three games). The team said Raanta’s comments had nothing to do with it, but regardless, there were some hard feelings on both sides. Raanta was traded to the Rangers 12 days after the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup.

Still, Raanta looks back at his time in Chicago with fondness, and with gratitude. He learned lessons from that team’s three-time champion core that he’s using in Carolina today.

“It was great,” he said. “You were able to see what it takes to get to the finish line, looking at (Jonathan) Toews and (Patrick) Kane and those guys and what it takes. You get to see the confidence in that group. They already had won a couple times. And it was just like, it didn’t matter if we lost a game or whatever happened, it was just, ‘Let’s go to the next one.’ It was awesome to be a part of it. And it gave me a little more hunger, also. Because in your head, you want to win the Stanley Cup when you’re actually playing. That’s the motivation.”

There’s another bit of motivation looming. Andersen participated in Monday’s practice, and is getting closer to returning. Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour won’t give a timetable for Andersen’s return, and won’t say what he’ll do in net once he does return.

But after finally getting to play a month of hockey as an undisputed No. 1 goaltender, is it time for Raanta to start looking over his shoulder again?

Raanta smiled at the question. Of course, he did.

“It’s about staying in the moment and not worrying about what’s happening outside, or even inside, the team,” he said. “You have pretty much one of the top goalies in the league sidelined right now. So you know whenever Freddie is healthy and feels good, you have to do the job and try to keep the net. You never know what happens the next day. So I’m just trying to enjoy the moment.”

And if there’s one thing Raanta’s better at than stopping pucks, it’s enjoying the moment. No matter how harrowing and pressure-packed it is.

“We’re in the playoffs, we’re in the second round, so the stakes are pretty high,” he said. “And before the game, you get little butterflies. If you don’t have that, if you just go out like it’s just one game and you just go play, I feel like you don’t get your best out of it. You have to get that good type of feeling before the game. For me, it’s not nervousness, but just a little goosebumps. You want that. That’s what gets you going. That means you’re enjoying it.

“And I’m enjoying it.”

Departing Shadows

You thought I'd forgotten, didn't you? Here it is, another rescue from my doomed fanfiction.net account.

Summary: Legolas arrives to winter in Imladris after an ill-fated patrol in Mirkwood. But when the prince's refusal to accept the truth of what happened affects his healing, Aragorn is determined to break through the shadows that threaten his friend's spirit. No slash. Second-place winner of the December 2005 Teitho contest.

This is one of the angstiest things I've ever written, so...it'll be right up someone's alley, I'm sure. Please check the warnings if you're concerned. It was apparently partly inspired by The Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You".

And like I always say. I may cringe, but I will never regret! On to the fic!

(I should warn you...I made up the horse's name just so Aragorn could call him Smokey. He first appeared in another fic that I'll post one of these days. His name might look decently elvish but it's total gibberish.)

"Legolas!"

Aragorn refused to let the knee-deep snowdrifts impede him as he surged forward to greet his friend. The prince had come to Imladris for the winter, arriving, it seemed, just ahead of the heavy snows.

"Hello, Estel," the blonde elf said wearily, dismounting from his horse and nodding to the groom that had come to take care of the animal.

"I see Smokey is well," Aragorn commented, referring to an old joke they had between them about the horse's name.

Legolas rolled his eyes. "For the last time, Ranger, his name is Simoliké."

Aragorn laughed, throwing an arm around his friend and pretending not to notice the elf's flinch. "It is wonderful to see you again, Legolas."

The elf sighed, relaxing just slightly as the man guided him down the cleared walkway up to the house. "Are your brothers home?" he asked with a hint of hesitation.

"They're out until this evening," Aragorn explained, biting back a grin as he remembered the twins' protests at being sent away the day the prince was due to arrive. "Ada wanted them to help some of the other homes prepare for winter."

He noticed Legolas seemed relieved to hear this, and wondered at the elf's reaction. Then again, he thought, knowing the circumstances behind the prince's journey perhaps it was not entirely unexpected that he would be hesitant to face the rather exuberant greeting that Elladan and Elrohir would cook up.

"How are you, Legolas?" Aragorn asked as they entered the house, turning his friend to face him.

Legolas looked down, and for the first time Aragorn noticed the dark shadows under the elf's eyes, the deep pallor of his skin, and the almost haunted look in his eyes. "I am fine," the prince said softly.

Rather than outright scoff the elf's answer, as he was used to doing, Aragorn simply nodded. "I believe my father asked to speak with you when you arrived," he said. "He's in his study...just leave your bags, someone will take them up later."

Aragorn walked the elf to his father's study, and was surprised when Lord Elrond asked him to remain. He sat easily in a chair, noting with some concern that Legolas was perched as though about to bolt.

"Legolas," Elrond greeted, setting aside the scroll he had been studying. "How is your father?"

"He is well, Lord Elrond," the prince replied, fidgeting a little.

"Are you aware that he sent me a letter to tell the reasons behind your arrival?"

Legolas flinched. "I had guessed as much."

"Can you tell me what it says?"

The younger elf frantically shook his head, his eyes wide. Aragorn looked on in concern, and only a restraining glance from his father kept him from jumping to his friend's side.

"Then shall I tell you?" Elrond asked, not even waiting for a response. "In his letter he mentioned that your patrol suffered a devastating attack by a party of orcs. All but three of the elves under your command were killed in battle, and those of you who survived were taken captive. The orcs recognized you as captain of that patrol and slowly tortured the other three survivors to death in an attempt to get information out of you. Is this correct?"

Aragorn's eyes widened, and he glanced at his friend. Legolas was trembling, his gaze fixed on Elrond as though afraid the older elf would attack him.

"Legolas, you cannot hide from what happened," Elrond said kindly. "Yes, six of your people are dead...six good elves that should not have suffered so. But you must not blame yourself, Legolas. You must face what happened and—"

But whatever else Lord Elrond was going to say was forever lost as Legolas chose that moment to bolt from his chair and flee the study. Aragorn was after him in a heartbeat, not so much to bring him back to Elrond as out of honest concern for his friend.

Luckily, in his haste Legolas was less stealthy than usual and Aragorn could easily follow him. He found the elf just outside the door, bent over on his knees with his arms around his stomach. Aragorn knelt beside his friend and wrapped an arm around his shoulder, pulling the prince's hair back as Legolas was violently sick.

"I can't, Estel," Legolas whispered, his voice shaking. "He asks me...I can't."

"What happened?" Aragorn asked. "You don't have to tell me if you don't wish to," he added as Legolas tensed. "I want to help you...tell me what I can do."

"I..." Legolas shivered. "I can't, not yet."

"All right," Aragorn nodded. "What do you wish to do, then?"

Legolas sighed and sat up just enough to lean against Aragorn. "I want to forget than any of this ever happened."

"I know," the human said soothingly. "But my brothers will be returning soon," he added, squinting at the setting sun. "Do you want me to tell them you've retired early?"

"No," the elf said, standing shakily to his feet. "I do not wish them to suspect something is wrong."

Ai, anyone who looks you in the eye would know that you are not well, Aragorn thought. "Perhaps you would like to bathe and rest before dinner, then?" he asked, ever mindful of all the lessons he'd received on being a gracious host.

Legolas smiled, and in that smile Aragorn finally saw a glimmer of the elf who was his best friend. "You would not mock me for my 'obsessive bathing'?" he asked.

"Not today," Aragorn said with a laugh. "I believe you know the way...or would you prefer me to escort you so you don't get lost?"

"No, Aragorn," Legolas sighed. "But if you could apologize to Lord Elrond for my behavior..."

"Of course," the human nodded. "I'll speak with him immediately," and get him to tell me just what is going on, he added mentally. "See you at dinner, then," he called before making his way back to his father's study.

"Come in, Estel," Elrond called, not even bothering to look up.

"Ada, what is going on?" Aragorn asked, not even bothering to pass on his friend's apology as he knew Elrond would not hold Legolas' behavior as offensive in any way.

Elrond sighed and motioned for Aragorn to close the door. "In his letter Thranduil told me that Legolas has refused to speak of anything that happened during his captivity."

"He said he doesn't want to talk about it," Aragorn said.

"He is burdened because he feels responsible for six deaths that were beyond his control...six elves who would have gladly given their lives to keep the secrets of Mirkwood safe."

"Did the orcs know he was a prince?"

"No, they thought he was only a captain. Had they known, however, they might have tried to use him as leverage. In that case the results may have been different," Elrond sighed, massaging the bridge of his nose with two fingers.

"Different?"

Elrond met the human's gaze, a depth of sorrow in his eyes that Aragorn had not expected. "When the deaths of his comrades failed to get him to speak, the orcs resorted to torturing Legolas. He spent three days in their grasp, until another patrol found and rescued him."

Aragorn sat back in shock. "He was tortured..." he repeated softly. "Is he going to be all right?"

"Only time will tell. I will say this, though," Elrond held up one finger. "If he does not come to terms with what happened he will break. His spirit is already shadowed, and I fear what will happen if he does not begin to release this soon." The elf-lord sighed. "I believe he is on the brink of fading."

The young man felt his resolve harden. "I will not let that happen," he said fiercely.

Elrond's gaze saddened further. "I hope so, ion-nin."

Aragorn turned to leave, but hesitated and looked back to his father. "You were wrong," he said softly. "You should not have confronted him. He is not ready."

The elf raised one eyebrow, his gaze tightening slightly. "And how do you know this?"

"He told me," the man said simply. "He will talk to us when he's ready...not before. For now, the best we can do is simply listen and wait for him to tell us. I dare say there have been enough healers trying to draw him out."

Elrond nodded to acknowledge Aragorn's argument, though the human could tell he hadn't convinced his father of anything. Sighing, he left the study and jogged down the hall to the one elf he knew he needed to see: Legolas.

Legolas was not surprised in the least when he came out of the bathing chamber to find Aragorn perched on his bed. He had almost expected the human to come barging in while he was still bathing, as though thinking that catching the prince unawares would make him reveal what he had gone through.

He shook his head, dispelling that thought. Aragorn would never do that to him. "Are you waiting for something, Human?" he asked, forcing a playful tone to his voice.

"Just wanted to see if you needed anything else."

Legolas sighed. "I don't want to talk about it."

Aragorn's brow furrowed in concern. "I wasn't going to ask."

The elf paused, trying to keep his hand steady as he reached for his hairbrush. "Why not?" he asked bluntly.

"I don't want to rush you," the man said simply. "I want you to talk to me when you're ready."

Legolas caught himself blinking back tears, his emotions stretched too far at this point for any sort of restraint to last. "What if I'm never ready?" he said in a whisper.

"You will be," Aragorn said confidently. "Take some time...take a few days to rest, if you like. You're safe here," the man added, resting his chin in his hand and studying the prince as he brushed his hair.

The elf sighed, setting the hairbrush aside and lying down on the bed. "I know," he murmured, fighting the bone-chilling exhaustion that seemed to follow him everywhere.

"My father's healers," he said after a few moments, "spent every day trying to convince me to talk about what happened...what I saw, what I went through. Every time I saw them I just started retreating further and further within. It was out of desperation that my father sent me here. He hoped your father could do something."

Aragorn grunted an acknowledgement. "He wants to help," the man said quietly. "And he could probably understand what you're feeling...but I know what you mean."

Legolas turned a curious eye on his friend, waiting for the human to continue.

"In my first months out with the rangers," the man explained, "we came across a pack of wolves. They were bent on destroying us, and managed to kill two of the younger rangers before we killed them. One of those men was my friend," Aragorn added softly. "The first human friend I'd ever made. We were near Imladris, so they brought the wounded here. I knew my brothers and my father had lost friends before...but having so many try to help me recover from my friend's death was just overwhelming and I shut them out. It wasn't until one of the other rangers simply told me that he would just listen if I ever needed to talk that I found myself willing to share anything."

He turned a saddened gaze toward the prince. "If you need to talk, Legolas, I will listen. And whatever you share, I will keep in secret as long as you wish. If you need me, I will stand by you through whatever you face."

Legolas sighed and nodded. "Thank you," he whispered, the world darkening as he drifted off to sleep.

Elladan and Elrohir cornered Legolas later that night in the Hall of Fire, demanding an account from their friend of his journey and the latest news from Mirkwood. Aragorn was relieved to see Legolas at ease, laughing and joking, but disheartened when he saw through the facade to the crumbling spirit within the prince.

He could see that the elf was exhausted, though he wondered if that was more due to the journey here or to the terrible weight he carried. "All right, enough," Aragorn declared, smoothly stepping in and maneuvering his friend away from his brothers. "You can speak with Legolas in the morning, the hour is growing late and I wish to have a word with my friend before he retires for the night."

Ignoring the protests from the twins—half-hearted and jovial though they were—Aragorn steered Legolas to a vacant balcony.

They stood in silence for a while, looking out as a light snow fell throughout the valley. "Everything is so peaceful here," Legolas finally said, sighing and leaning heavily against the railing. "Not like home...there is no shadow over Imladris."

Aragorn grunted softly in agreement. "You know, tomorrow the first thing my brothers will do is drag me out of bed and bury me in the snow. They've done it during the first snow every year, but I wasn't here for the first snow so they'll probably do it with this one. They used to try convince me it would teach me to walk atop it as elves do...but I've long since learned that was a lie."

Legolas chuckled. "And I suppose you'll wish me to come to your aid?"

"Of course," Aragorn grinned. "What else are friends for?" he added, and lighthearted though his tone was he hoped Legolas would understand the hidden message.

The blonde elf sobered immediately. "I know," he said quietly. "I have been struggling all day...here I have a friend who has promised to stand beside me no matter what I face, yet when it comes to facing myself I have not the courage to ask."

Aragorn's heart went out to the elf. "You don't ever need to ask, Legolas," he replied gently. "I will always stand with you."

"Always?" the elf asked, turning to Aragorn so the human could see the tears glistening in the elf's eyes. "I am afraid, Aragorn. Afraid to face what is inside of me...afraid that the memories will be too much...but most of all I am afraid that if everyone sees this they will know I am a coward."

The elf turned away, covering his face with one hand. Aragorn immediately pulled his friend into an embrace, letting the elf sob into his shoulder. "You are not a coward," he said firmly. "Fear is just another battle, Legolas. You must face it, and you can defeat it."

When his friend had calmed down enough to release his death-grip on Aragorn's tunic, the human gently steered the elf through a set of fairly empty corridors to his chamber.

"Now sleep," he ordered, taking a look around the guestroom in which Legolas was staying. Sudden inspiration struck, and he turned to his friend's pack and began digging through it.

"What are you doing?" Legolas asked.

"It is far too cold in here," the man complained. "Even for an elf...you'll catch your death of cold if you stay in here tonight," he stood up triumphantly, a set of Legolas' sleeping clothes in his hand. "Come with me," he ordered, grabbing the elf by the arm.

Ignoring his friend's protests, he ushered Legolas down to his own chamber where a fire was already roaring happily in the fireplace. "This is much better, isn't it?" Aragorn asked, swiftly changing into his own sleeping clothes.

Legolas raised one eyebrow. "My room is not cold, Aragorn."

"Well...maybe not to you but I'll rest much better knowing that you're not sleeping in a room so frigid it could freeze a dragon," Aragorn retorted, climbing into his bed. It was large enough for three or four people, so he knew the elf couldn't protest because of lack of room.

The elf shook his head in amusement, and turned his back to change. Aragorn's stomach somersaulted when he caught sight of a few still-unhealed wounds on the elf's back—marks left from a whip and burns the size of his thumb. Whatever shadow had fallen on Legolas' spirit had left his friend unable to fully heal.

Legolas finished changing and slid into the other side of the bed. "Happy now, Human?" he asked.

"Of course," Aragorn laughed. He blew out the lamp on the bedside table, and waited until Legolas' breathing evened out to slip into sleep.

And when the nightmares struck, as he had known they would, he was right there.

Lord Elrond paused outside of Legolas' room—the prince was a frequent enough guest that one of the rooms was considered his—and knocked softly. Not hearing an answer he quietly opened the door and peeked in, a bit surprised to see that the room was vacant.

Then again, he mused, he shouldn't have been surprised at all.

Chuckling inwardly he stealthily opened the door to his youngest son's room just enough so slip in, and couldn't hold back a smile.

They were still sleeping, Aragorn with his arms wrapped around Legolas and the elf's head tucked under his chin, as though his mere presence could beat back the shadow that hung about the archer's spirit.

It was the nature of their friendship—of the friendship of two friends closer than brothers—for each to protect the other.

This time, Aragorn was the protector...against whatever demons preyed on his friend's spirit.

Elrond held back a sigh as he approached the bed, not wanting to wake either prince or ranger. He knew what he had said in his study had sounded unfeeling and harsh, but he had been hoping to force Legolas to face what had happened. He could now fully see the distress his words had caused the younger elf, and standing at the end of the bed he could make out distinct tear-trails left on the prince's face from whatever horrors he'd endured in his dreams.

And his eyes were closed, as though that would keep the images away.

Elves could usually control their dreams, but Elrond knew that Legolas had been repressing memories of his captivity and those memories would seek to break through, mostly in the form of nightmares.

But perhaps...perhaps his son could succeed where all of healers of Mirkwood and Legolas' own family had failed. The love of a brother, extended without hesitation or condition, might be just what was needed to break through the shadow.

As though knowing he was being thought of, Aragorn opened one eye and regarded his father with a raised eyebrow. Elrond pressed a finger to his lips to indicate silence, and slowly retreated, pausing just long enough to throw a smile over his shoulder at his son and the sleeping prince.

He would not speak about these things to Legolas again, he decided, unless the prince approached him. Perhaps Aragorn was right, and the best cure would be to listen and wait until Legolas was ready to speak.

Aragorn had dozed off when his father left, but woke suddenly with a yelp when a pair of hands seized his feet and dragged him off the bed.

"EL!" he shouted, not knowing which twin it was. Laughing gray eyes peeked into his as the less-responsible twin perched on the bed.

"It snowed last night, Estel," the twin—Elladan—said cheerfully.

"It is far from the first snow," the human grumped, trying to wrestle his feet away from Elrohir.

"Ah, but it is such fresh snow," Elrohir exclaimed, chuckling and pulling Aragorn a few more feet when the ranger tried to sit up and pry his hands away.

"Couldn't the snow wait a few hours?" a fourth voice asked groggily as the prince sat up, awakened from his exhausted sleep by the commotion.

"Legolas! Help me!" Aragorn called, ignoring the surprised glances of the twins who had evidently not seen Legolas when they entered the room.

"Aye, help him!" Elladan shouted, jumping to his feet and grabbing Legolas by the wrist. He dragged the prince off the bed, ignoring the protests and finally managing to dump the blonde elf, along with several blankets and a few pillows, onto the floor.

"What do you say, 'Dan?"

"I say the smelly human needs a bath!" Elladan exclaimed. "Shall we go?" he added, easily flinging Legolas over one shoulder and opening the door.

The prince was helpless with laughter in spite of his protests by this time, as every time he tried to wriggle away Elladan managed to poke him in a ticklish spot.

Elrohir followed, still dragging Aragorn by the ankles. The ranger began protesting that they would have to go downstairs—surely Elrohir would let him walk that much?

But he had forgotten his brother's tenacity. Elrohir did let go of Aragorn's ankles, but only to grab him around the chest and haul him down the stairs backwards, leaving his feet to drag behind.

Elladan was waiting impatiently by the door when Elrohir finally arrived with his struggling captive. Together they took their prisoners outside, Elladan depositing the prince gracefully in a clear spot in the yard and running to aid Elrohir.

Aragorn shouted in protest, but was no match for the twin elves as they managed to bring him to the ground, burying him in the snow and wrestling with him until he was completely soaked, shivering in his sleeping clothes.

"A-ada will b-be angry with y-you if I c-catch cold," Aragorn muttered through chattering teeth, hugging his arms tightly to his chest to preserve some warmth. Why did he let them to do this to him every year?

"Ah, but it is winter and you have nowhere better to be," Elladan said with a grand shrug. "What better place than the healers' wing?"

Legolas laughed at this, still sitting aside atop a patch of unbroken snow.

"The prince is amused," Elrohir commented.

"Yes...perhaps before he judges this as amusing he should experience it for himself," Elladan suggested with a wicked grin and in a flash the two had jumped to their feet and ran for the prince.

To Aragorn's alarm, the prince reacted with wide, fearful eyes and turned to flee.

The twins laughed as they chased him down, gleefully giving him the same treatment they'd given their brother. But Aragorn heard Legolas' protests grow more frantic and fearful, until he was in a high state of terror and begging the twins to stop.

Ignoring his own discomfort, Aragorn plunged into the unbroken snow and drove his way forward to the three elves, angered when his brothers treated the younger elf's fear as part of the game.

"Get off him!" Aragorn shouted, somehow pushing both Elladan and Elrohir away. Legolas lay curled up in the snow, his arms over his head and his breath coming in terrified pants. "Legolas?" he asked softly, placing a hand on the trembling shoulder.

The prince recognized Aragorn's voice and launched himself up into his friend's arms, burying his face in the man's sodden tunic to muffle his sobs of fear. Aragorn was shocked to see a small amount of blood on the snow, and more on the back of the elf's tunic.

With a warning glance at his brothers to stay back, Aragorn wordlessly gathered up the archer in his arms and trudged back into the house, heading straight for the healers' wing.

The moment his son entered the room carrying the trembling elf, Elrond knew the twins' yearly prank had gone tragically wrong. He sighed to himself, pulling back the blankets on one of the beds and nodding for Aragorn to set the prince down. He would have to explain this to his sons later...it wouldn't be fair to them to leave them wondering.

Then, as Aragorn showed him the reopened wounds on the archer's back, his concern grew.

"Ada, he was terrified," Aragorn confessed in a low voice, hoping they were far enough away that the blonde elf couldn't hear them. "He was pleading for them to stop, but they were just joking."

"I should have told them," Elrond sighed.

Aragorn agreed with his own sigh, bringing a few rolls of bandages over to bind his friend's wounds. Elrond dispensed a servant to bring down dry clothes for his son and the prince, seeing that both were cold and wet.

"Legolas?" Aragorn asked, kneeling beside the bed to look his friend in the eye. Elrond glanced over and was startled to see the prince pale-faced, tears streaking out of tightly-closed eyes. "It's all right," the human said soothingly, placing a hand on the elf's shoulder. "It's over...they're gone."

The servant returned with the clothes, and Elrond politely turned away, pretending to be hunting for something on the herb table, as Aragorn helped his friend change before changing himself.

"A-aragorn?" the prince whispered.

"Yes?" the man was kneeling again in an instant, grasping the white-fingered hand that extended toward him.

"Will you stay?"

Aragorn smiled tenderly. "I wouldn't be anywhere else."

Several hours later, after hearing the story from their father and shoveling all the paths from the house to the various outbuildings, Elladan and Elrohir peeked into the healing room to see how the prince was faring.

Legolas was sleeping again, Aragorn in a chair at his side with a book in hand. He glanced up at his brothers and offered them an apologetic glance.

"We came to apologize," Elrohir whispered.

Aragorn shook his head. "You didn't know," he murmured.

"Still...when he asked us to stop..." Elladan's voice trailed off when he thought of how he and his twin had unintentionally hurt their friend. "Is he all right?"

"He will be," Aragorn nodded. "He finally told me what happened," he added with a sigh. "He slept a bit just after you...after we came in, but woke up after another nightmare. This time, though, he told me what it was about."

Elladan raised one eyebrow, unconsciously imitating his father. "Another nightmare?"

Aragorn nodded sadly. "He had four last night. Ada said it was repressed memories trying to break through, and now that he finally told me what happened it seems he's sleeping peacefully."

The twins agreed, both noticing that the prince seemed more at peace than he had been since his arrival. "I hope can forgive us," Elrohir murmured.

"He already has," Aragorn replied gently. "He knows you didn't mean to cause him pain."

Elladan nodded, eyes suspiciously damp-looking. "Well, I guess we'd better get changed if we want to be warm and dry for dinner," he commented wryly. "Ada has had us clearing the paths for the past few hours as punishment for reckless behavior."

Aragorn couldn't keep a broad grin from spreading across his face. "Doesn't he do that every year?"

"Aye," Elrohir shrugged. "I'm beginning to think it's less punishment for throwing you in the snow and more because he knows we'll actually do it."

"You do deserve it," Aragorn interjected laughingly.

Elladan just snickered. "It's worth it every year to see your face, though," he teased. "Come on, 'Ro, unlike some humans we don't enjoy playing in the snow," he added, leading the way out of the healers' wing.

Neither he nor his twin caught the devious smile spreading across their brother's face.

Clean, dry, and impeccably dressed, Elladan and Elrohir sat at the table in the dining hall merrily chatting with the other elves in the hall. Their father sat at the head, as usual, either conversing with the elves to either side of him or just watching out over the hall.

Legolas and Aragorn were not in their places, but given the prince's frail condition of late the twins expected them to be taking dinner in the healers' wing.

And so neither one suspected anything until two rather large buckets filled with snow were upended over their heads, the buckets left to sit like oversized hats.

Pushing the bucket off his head and shaking the snow out of his eyes in fury, Elrohir glared about the room to see who had done such a thing. His eyes lighted on Aragorn and Legolas, sitting across the table with suspiciously-innocent faces.

"Why, Legolas," Aragorn said in mock amazement. "I do believe it is snowing indoors."

Legolas nodded, looking up at the ceiling as though it were a wonder to behold and valiantly holding in his laughter.

His heart was lighter than it had been in weeks. Aragorn had listened, offered what strength he could, and simply stood with Legolas as he faced the fear in his soul.

And beyond that fear was the peace he had thought he lost.

Finally, the shadows were departing.

Fallen Hero 1.5 Episode 14 Revenge: The Voice

Episode 13 Revenge: One Month Later

           Ranger’s Humvee – en route to the press conference

           You don’t know what exactly drove you to do this. Maybe it’s genuine worry, maybe you are pretending to care, maybe you want to see what Zeta tried here, or maybe a combination of all of the above. No matter the reason, you are here now, seated in the passenger seat next to Julia, who’s driving like the maniac that she has always been. Only this time you do not blame her because she is not running for a shot of adrenaline, she’s running because of worry for her rookie teammate, Herald.

           Steel and Argent remained behind to keep things under control back at HQ. And although officially you are a civilian, and an injured one at that, you have helped enough to get in here. That and the fact that they have no idea what is happening caused Steel to bite back any objections he might have had. For all of his apprehensions regarding you, he has always put them aside when he knew the situation called for it. And in this case, when at least two rangers were needed to keep order and help people in HQ and two were needed to go to the press conference and check on his subordinate and teammate, he had to.

           You arrive at a pretty similar scene to the one back in rangers’ HQ. Debris mist everywhere and dozens hurt and being attended to. Your instant reaction is to scan for Herald. His thoughts you have felt dozens of time by now so he would be easy to pinpoint. And there he was, helping some people up and flying them to the nearest ambulance. He was a bit bloodied in the head and his suit tattered. You let Julia know.

           “Herald!” she yells as you run behind her.

           “Oh hey Charge.” A couple of seconds pass before he notices you. “Sides- I mean Jeremy. You came too?”

           “I was in the neighborhood.”

           “You don’t look so good.”

           You nod to him. “Catching an explosion to the face will do that to you.” He tenses when you say that.

           “Headquarters too?” You nod again.

           “Wei and Angie are taking care of that front. What’s the situation here?” Julia says, a bit of her old marshal tone slipping in.

           “Everything just… sort of happened. One minute the mayor was making a speech, the next there was smoke and people screaming and…” Julia grabs him by the shoulders before his panic sets in.

           “Herald, it’s ok. Just breath.” He does as ordered and eases up.

           “I’ve been trying to help as much as possible but… there’s too many…” he gets cut off by another voice chiming in. Much to both your and her chagrin.

           “Charge. Ranger Charge.” The mayor steps in, yelling at Julia. “Ranger Charge, I would like to know what is going on here. Who caused this?”

           “We don’t know yet Mr. Mayor, our headquarters were attacked too.”

           “What! What do you mean by that? Aren’t your headquarters supposed to be more secure?”

           Julia breathes in. Seems she has learned to keep her calm. Back in the day she would have ignored him or pushed him away. “It was in the front entrance, nothing major as far as we know.”

           “Good, then you can focus on here. This is the sort of things you are supposed to prevent. What good are you if you-” he does not get to finish as you hear a voice. A very familiar distorted voice. The same distorted voice Zeta used before.

           “Ladies and gentlemen welcome to the city of Los Diablos. The city that houses some of the most vile, and disgusting people the world has ever known. This image right now should be the post card of Los Diablos, because it’s the most accurate representation of what you can expect living in this sickening place. A place that houses villains like the Psychopathor, Hollow Ground, and The Mastermind.” You don’t know if him putting you in the same sentence with those two is supposed to be an insult or a compliment. Either way it does not matter. What matters is what is he after? What’s this display about? His grudge is with you, so what is all this posturing and villain speech about? “So from here on out I will remind you all of the hell you live in. The Voice of your past made flesh to haunt you for the rest of your lives.”

           As soon as he finishes, the mayor wastes no time to talk. “What the hell is this? Another villain? How many more villains are we going to have? This is your fault…” he turns and points to Julia and you just have enough of it.

           “Villains will appear with or without rangers Mr. Mayor. You should know that by now,” you tell him without even looking at him. He turns and glares at you.

           “And who the hell are you?”

           “No one of importance,” you shrug.

           “Then you should keep your mouth shut.”

           “Ok that’s enough,” Julia interjects. “Mr. Mayor as you have seen the rangers have a job to do and the more you berates us the less time we have to investigate and find the person responsible for this.” He glares at her while you smirk. Getting the cue, he leaves with a snort. Julia turns back to you and Herald.

           “So who is that new villain?” Herald asks.

           “Someone who’s been causing a lot of trouble in the underworld lately,” you answer. Julia gives you a look.

           “How much trouble?” she asks.

           “Enough that everybody wants them to leave. Even Hollow Ground.” She smirks at you.

           “I thought you were retired.”

           “Being well informed helps with that retirement. Knowing when something like this might happen helps me avoid it.”

She nods. “So what have you heard?” You look around and bring them both closer to you.

           “I don’t know the why,” you lie. “But I’ve heard that they and Mastermind have been battling it out in the last couple of months. Bloodmoon was the result of one of those fights.”

           “That guy, the Voice, was responsible for Bloodmoon?” Herald asks.

           You shake your head. “Not exactly. Mastermind was the one who caused the deaths. The Army was apparently a mock to Mastermind, a way to smear their name. And, well, you saw how Mastermind reacted to that. After that the Voice just disappeared for a month.”

           “So what are they after now?” Julia asks, the same way she used to do when she was marshal and you two worked together. It really does feel like old times. But it’s not. You hate to do this, but Zeta has stepped up his game and now you have to step up yours. Involving the rangers is how you do that. Not that they are not already involved, considering the bomb at their headquarters, but you are planning to bring them in even more.

           You turn back and stare at the disaster, the same way you used to do when you were Sidestep. Stare at the crime scene and put the pieces together. You hear Herald talk but Julia stops him. She had been present at those moments many times and knows what you are up to by now.

           This sudden display is too much in your opinion. Zeta never showed much interest in getting attention. All he wants is to make you suffer so towards what end does this works to? The attack on rangers HQ makes sense as a personal attack, but the press conference is a weak target. A target filled with reporters and innocent civilians that have nothing to do with his vendetta and would affect you very little. So what is his goal, what does he hope to accomplish by hurting so many people? The only thing it would show is how far he is willing to go to-

           “They are recruiting…” you say as the answer hits you in the head. You turn back to Julia and Herald. She smirking and he confused. “They are recruiting,” you repeat. “They are out of goons and they need more.”

           “But why hurt all of these people?” Herald asks.

           “Fear factor. Mastermind eliminated most of the Army of Mastermind in one fell swoop. And that terrified the rest of the underworld. No one not currently working for another big villain will go up against Mastermind. So the Voice needed to show how far THEY are willing to go. Make the criminals fear them more than they fear Mastermind.”

           “By hurting innocent people?” he asks in disbelief, more to himself than to you.

           You nod. “You’ll be surprised how far some will go to get what they want.”

           “So what would you suggest?” Julia asks. Now it was the time for the final nail. You prepare mentally to say it. And you can tell she is well aware of what you are about to say.

           “As the old adage goes; the enemy of my enemy,” you say. Herald stares in disbelief. Julia simply nods in acceptance.

           “Who’s the friend?” she asks, knowing full well your answer.

           You turn back to the disaster. “The one who has yet to harm any civilians.”

           Herald tenses up again, turning between you and Julia as if trying to wrap his head around what you mean. “What! No! We can’t just-” he begins but Julia interrupts him. You know what she will say. It’s the same speech she gave Steel whenever you had to do it. Back in the day you and the rangers would sometimes have to team up with one or more villains to take out another. It was not pretty and no one was comfortable. But it had to be done. Because it’s always better to be fighting one villain instead of two, and there is such a thing as the lesser of two evils. Not that Julia was not quick to go back to the hunt. So you will have to watch out for that.

           After a few minutes Herald comes around. Not completely comfortable with the idea, as his thoughts are painfully quick to remind you, but on board.

           “Can you get one of your contacts to send a message?” Julia says, sounding a lot more like marshal Charge than anything else now. You nod. You already have. “Good. Get to it then. Herald and I will remain here.” You nod again and turn. And then you feel a hand on your shoulder, her hand. “Be careful, ok?”

           You chuckle a bit. “That’s my middle name, remember?”

           “It is.” She smiles and lets you go.

           Hideout – 6:00pm

           “But boss, they are-” you raise your hand to cut Nehal off. You knew it was going to be hard to convince them of this.

           “We don’t have time for arguments Nehal. The Voice is preparing for a war and I’m unwilling to let them finish it.”

           “By working with the Rangers?” she says. “My ribs still hurt from fighting that silver bitch.”

           “I agree with Nehal here, boss. How do you know the rangers wouldn’t just try to take you down immediately after?” Pelayo asks, taking charge and speaking for the rest of the team.

           “It’s a risk we are going to have to take Pelayo. The Voice is far more dangerous than the Rangers, trust me.” He stares at you straight in the eyes, as if trying to figure you out. He seems to find what he was looking for because he nods. You nod back and look at all of them. “Every worry you have about this I already have myself, trust me. But we have very little choice. Our window of time is small. With the bombing of the press conference and rangers HQ there will no doubt be a line of thugs in front of the Voice’s hideout, waiting to be recruited. We have to act fast.” Pelayo and Ward nod obediently. Nehal nods begrudgingly and Zaza nods sheepishly. You sigh.

           “I know what I did,” you begin. “I know you are scared.” you look at every single one of them. One by one your eyes fix on theirs, lowering yourself to their level, not being their boss, but someone closer. “If you want to leave you can do it. I will not hold it against you nor will I chase you. You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to…” none of them answer. They stare and wonder, their thoughts jumping from one thing to the other. Pelayo stands up first, followed by Ward, then Nehal, then Rosie, and finally Zaza. In their thoughts you can tell; they are not one hundred percent sure of this, but they are certain enough. They are here for the long haul. You have not lost them yet, nor will you lose them so easily. You can’t help but smirk a bit. You stand up too and give them the order to prepare.

           Your room is cold and dark; it has not been opened all day. It’s funny. This room has become more of your room than your apartment. You feel safer here than you ever did back there. You will miss it. In the last month you have purchased a new building to use as hideout with the money you have stolen. All that’s left is to hire a receptionist to turn people away. Something to worry about later. Right now reminiscing has to be put at the back of your mind. It’s time for Jeremy to give way for Mastermind once again.

           “And for Mastermind to do what must be done,” you hear her voice behind you once again. Jane.

           “And what is that?” you ask her, not even turning to see her.

           “Will you kill him?” You don’t answer. Instead you open the closet. The armor stands over you like a shadow towering over your small pathetic frame. A shadow, clad in black, with a long flowing cape and a hood that covers its bladed reflective head. The shadow that is the Mastermind. On one side the Rat King squeals in happiness. You rub your thoughts with theirs, like a soft hand petting them. “Will you?”

           “I don’t know,” you answer. The truth is you do not know what you will do when you find him. When you beat him and have him at your mercy.

           “He’s a threat. One that you can’t allow to keep going.” You fall silent again. You can’t argue with her reasoning. But you still don’t know if you can do it. Alpha is gone, Kappa is gone… Beta is gone. All that’s left of that past is Zeta. Once he is gone it will all be gone. Nothing to connect you back. Is that what you want? Is that what you need?

           Right now it does not matter. What matters is that you have to get ready. Before you got here you spoke to your contacts. And apparently there is a big recruitment camp going on in the middle of the city. That’s no doubt where Zeta is, and where you and the Rangers will attack.

           “Fine. But when the time comes,” her voice is now closer to your ear. And then it changes to that of Mastermind. “You better make the right choice.” She disappears. Finally alone, you stare back at your suit. It’s time get ready, you have a war to win…

Episode 15 Revenge: Collision Course

Ok, ok, so last week, the Rangers posted this video where everyone (read: Chris Kreider) mercilessly mocked Pavel Buchnevich for collecting magnets. It’s hysterical. Watch it. This, of course, led me to start thinking and then @optomisticgirl​ was like...what if this were a Blue Line thing and I was, like, that’s what I was thinking. So, something about great minds or whatever. Anyway, here’s 3.4K of the Rangers first line making fun of Will Scarlet for collecting keychains. Especially Killian, because like:

Also, this gets like...real fluffy, so fair warning. Timeline wise this is the season after Killian was "supposed" to retire, so Robin is already working for MSG Networks and Chris very much hasn't been born yet. 

“Hold on, hold on, hold on, go back one more time.”

Emma rolled her eyes, but did as instructed – implored, really, the laughter clinging to Phillip’s voice and she was fairly positive there were unshed tears in his eyes. Her gaze flitted towards Killian, his own smile tugging at the corners of the mouth.

“There’s no harm in watching it one more time, love,” he muttered. “Just to make sure it’s as funny as we all think it is.”

Will groaned, slumping dramatically onto the bar and Phillip’s tears, finally, landed on his face. “It’s definitely that funny,” Phillip said, nodding emphatically while he tried to tug Emma’s phone out of her hand.

“Oh my God,” she mumbled. “How old are you?”

“I really want to watch it again.”

Will groaned again. He must have been going for a record. And, honestly, Emma felt bad, but it was absurd and definitely as funny as advertised and she and Ruby watched the video at least a dozen times in her office earlier that afternoon.

“How old is Peg?” Will quipped. “Subtract seventy-thousand years and that’s how old Rook is. At least.”

“Seventy-thousand,” Emma echoed. “That’s the number you want to stick with, huh?”

“You going to be mean about this too?”

“Am I being mean?”

“A little.”

Emma shrugged, lips twitching as she tried not to laugh. It wasn’t easy. The video was ridiculous. She hadn’t checked the metrics. but she assumed the click numbers were through some kind of metaphorical roof.

Maybe a physical roof.

“Although, not as mean as your husband.”

“Ah, that’s not true at all,” Killian objected.

Will shook his head. “Rude, Cap. Straight up. Just…a giant ass.”

“A giant ass.”

“You’re really not thinking about what words you’re using before you use ‘em, huh?” Phillip asked, holding up both hands in mock surrender when Will glared at him. “Aw, c’mon, if you didn’t want to be mercilessly mocked, you shouldn’t have told Lucas.”

Killian hummed in agreement, leaning back to grab the plate of food Eric dropped on the few inches of counter Will wasn’t draped over. “A texted me the video,” Eric said. “Cap was definitely being a jerk.”

“It caught me off guard,” Killian reasoned. HIs arm moved around Emma’s waist, seemingly out of instinct, hooking his chin over her shoulder while he tried to nudge the toe of his shoe into Will’s ankle.

it didn’t really work.

“I mean, who does that?” he continued. “Honestly? It’s kind of weird, right?”

Eric clicked his tongue. “It’s a little weird. A agreed with that too. Although she also said Rook brought up a reasonable question.”

“That is fundamentally untrue, Rook has never brought up a reasonable question in his life,” Will cried, not bothering to lift his head off his forearms. “Give me something to drink. Do your job.”

“Ok, ok,” Phillip said. “Play the video again, Em.”

Her eyes were going to get stuck mid-roll, but Emma tapped her thumb on the phone screen, dropping it a few inches away from Will’s right elbow.

“Which one of your teammates collects keychains?”

She hadn’t actually needed to see the video to know it was Killian’s immediate laugh that afternoon. There was probably something inherently romantic about that. It was less romantic, presumably, when it also involved making fun of Will Scarlet’s penchant for collecting keychains.

“See,” Will moaned. “Cap’s being a jerk from the get.”

“Wait, wait, keychains? Did you say keychains? What kind of keychains? Are you sure you actually heard that right?”

There was a pan to Phillip after Killian’s initial reaction, a look Emma had all but memorized at that point. She and Ruby had watched the video so many times. They’d called Mary Margaret to watch it together.

Mary Margaret had laughed.

A lot.

“Keychains?” Phillip balked. “I don’t…keychains? What’s the reason behind that?”

“Jerks,” Will shouted again. He nearly knocked his drink over when he blindly reached out, trying to wrap his fingers around a glass he couldn’t see because he refused to lift his head up.

“Oh my God,” Emma muttered, sliding the glass closer to his fingertips.

“Is this actually alcohol?”

“Middle of the season.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“Drink your water, Scarlet,” Killian said.

His answering salute was only a little absurd. “Yes, Dad.”

“Ok, ok, so keychains, right?” Killian asked again, and this was the part of the video where he started talking to people off-camera. “Where is he getting them from? Between games?”

“It’s got to be between games, right?” Phillip pressed. “Oh, oh, maybe before skate? Is Scarlet sneaking out before skate on game day?”

“Are you?” Emma asked, and Will flipped his head to the side. So he could stick his tongue out at her. “Ok, look who’s being a child now.”

“And that’s actually not an answer,” Killian pointed out. She didn’t have to turn around to know he was smiling then either. There was probably some stupid eyebrow thing involved too.

He kissed her cheek.

“You guys are both bullies,” Will sighed. “Honestly, see if I set Cap up on the power play again this season and then what’ll you do?”

“Score several other ways?”

“Yeah, but it won’t be as impressive and your kids are really into the power play stuff. So, you know…”

“Yeah, yeah, that’s a real big threat.”

Will added sound to the expression he was making, a groan and a gag and it probably hurt his throat. It kind of timed up with the laughter still coming from Emma’s phone.

“So, no one can tell me how this actually started?” Killian asked, talking to more people off-camera and he was half out of his chair. “Where is he keeping all of them? Does he have some kind of keychain stash somewhere?”

“I’m not sneaking out of morning skate,” Will said. “You’ve seen me at morning skate. Every day. For years.”

Phillip was shaking his head before Will even finished. “Not every day. You blew off that one a couple years ago.”

“Why do you remember that?”

“You’re very noisy when you’re sneaking out of hotel rooms.”

Killian’s whole body shook when he laughed lightly, another quick kiss pressed to whatever bit of Emma he seemed able to find. That one landed on the side of her neck. “He’s got logs of every time you did something wrong for moments just like this.”

“Ok, well, that makes me sound like a creep, Cap,” Phillip hissed. “And, you know, it’s not every time. Just…certain times.”

Will blinked. “How many times do you think I’ve done something wrong on the road?”

“You want, like, an itemized list or…”

Will flipped him off.

“What exactly was this time though?” Emma asked, curiosity getting the better of her and Ruby would be disappointed she missed this.

“Once, when we were in Carolina—“ Phillip cut himself off, squeezing one eye closed and Emma had to bite the inside of her lip when Killian muttered wait to see when the steam starts pouring out of his ears against her hair. “Yeah, yeah, I heard that Cap. I’m trying to ensure accuracy in my story.”

“First time for everything,” Will growled.

They were, apparently, just going to flip each other off now.

“Ok, ok, it must have been two years ago? It was after Cap got hurt, but not that actual season.”

“God, Rook, let’s talk about some more touchy subjects, huh? Em was already freaked out enough about that one hit Cap took the other day.”

Emma felt the flush rise in her cheek – but she wasn’t sure if it was because Will was frustratingly correct or Killian was kissing just behind her ear now and it might have been some weird, strange combination of both.

“It’s fine, Swan,” Killian said softly, and they’d moved into important territory rather quickly. She didn’t get worried anymore.

That was a great, big lie.

She wanted to focus on Will’s weird keychain collection.

“When did Scarlet sneak out the hotel room?” Emma asked, voice going sharp and Will’s gaze turned knowing far too quickly to be entirely comfortable.

“If it’s actually two seasons ago, then it’s that one time when Matt—“

“—Oh, shit, I know when it is,” Killian muttered. So did Emma. Phillip muttered a string of curses under his breath.

“Yeah, got you now, don’t I? You all feel like jerks?”

It was the season after Killian got hurt – a string of road games and Matt had been five, determined on the ice and even more determined off it, practicing moves in the hallway of their apartment when his feet got tangled up and his stick, somehow, got between his legs and he’d fallen through the wall.

Straight through. Head first. On a Saturday morning, waking up well before Emma had even considered getting out of bed.

Killian had been furious about the shoddy craftsmanship of their drywall.

David drove them to the hospital in a cop car. She had to tell him not to use the lights. He’d wanted to. So had Killian. And Will. And Robin.

Who had all appeared on the FaceTime call, each of them sporting matching looks of worry and terror and concern over concussions at such a young age.

“Well, now I look like a dick,” Phillip shrugged, reaching behind the bar to grab a glass and Eric didn’t try to stop him.

He knew better than that.

“You do,” Will agreed. “Ok, Em, tell me something, on a scale of one to forty-seven thousand, how mean and enthusiastic were you and Lucas about the hits this video was going to drive?”

“I’m not trying to be mean, Scarlet,” Emma promised, but that only earned her another dramatic sigh and even more slumped shoulders and she heard the laughter coming into the restaurant before she even heard the door swing open. “Incoming,” she warned. “And he’s going to have to talk about it on TV.”

Will cursed.

“Hey,” Killian snapped. He didn’t get out any further reprimand though, far too preoccupied with the kids slamming into his leg and the shouts pressed into his side and Robin appeared to be cackling.

Will cursed again.

“Cap’s going to ground you,” Phillip laughed. “What were your thoughts, Locksley?”

Robin’s laugh only got louder, flanked by Roland and the sounds of the video playing from the phone in his hand. “I genuinely have too many thoughts about it,” Robin grinned. “They had to cut me off in the studio. I could wax poetic about this for years. Eons.”

“Eons are the same as years,” Will said.

Killian shook his head. “Eons is way more impressive. Eons, though, honestly?”

“Oh, yeah,” Robin nodded. “At least. Maybe a few eternities too. You think eternities are longer than eons?”

“Beats me. Ask your kid in college.”

“He’s got to ask Henry because he didn’t graduate college,” Will pointed out. “And, honestly, poetic, Locksley? That’s an exaggeration, don’t you think? You even know how poems work?”

Robin tilted his head. “It’s a figure of speech.”

“You know how a haiku works?”

“Figure of speech.”

“What about a sonnet? You know a lot of Shakespearean sonnets?”

“Eric, can I get some food?” Robin asked, pointedly ignoring Will and whatever hand gesture he was making. Killian kicked at his ankle again. “There are very hungry kids out here who may have the video memorized at this point.”

Matt was jumping up and down, tugging on whatever shirt he could get his fingers around. He didn’t appear all that partial to Killian’s either, moving on to Phillip and back to Robin and it only took a few seconds for Roland to wrap his free arm around the front of Matt’s shoulders.

Peggy was already trying to climb between Killian and Will.

Emma started the video again.

“Relax,” Roland said lightly, tightening his hold on Matt. “Hey, Uncle Will, how come none of us knew about this keychain thing?”

Will grumbled something that sounded a lot like oh my God as Robin dropped onto the nearest stool. There were more footsteps, heels and sneakers and laughter in equal measure, Ruby moving into the restaurant with a whirlwind of announcements and— “The numbers are ridiculous, people may make shirts. There are memes.”

“There are memes?” Robin repeated, voice rising on every letter. “Oh, I’ll have to tell Henry.”

Will nearly knocked the stool over when he jumped up, downing the rest of what was very clearly water in several gulps. “Do not tell Henry about this.”

“Does Belle know that you hoard keychains?”

“There is no hoarding!”

“No?” Killian asked. “Where are they, then? Where are you hiding the keychains, Scarlet?”

“This is not as dark as you’re making it, Cap.”

“Who’s making it dark?”

“You,” Will yelled, thrusting his whole hand forward and he had to twist to make sure he didn’t inadvertently stab Emma in the ribs. “Obviously.”

“That might actually be Rook, honestly. He brought up the concussions and rap sheet.”

“Ok, it’s not a rap sheet,” Phillip argued, but Emma knew Killian was still smiling and Will clicked his tongue in frustration.

“How long have you been doing this, though?” Roland asked, and it was probably wrong to be proud of a teenager for asking the pertinent questions. Ruby looked like she was close to bursting though, smile wide and something about proper media training very likely sitting on the tip of her tongue.

“The smartest kid in the room,” she announced. He wiped off the her kiss as soon as she moved away from his hair. “Although not totally relevant to the video. It’s about the content and how much of a jerk Cap and Rook—“

“—No one was being a jerk,” Killian yelled, only to be met with several variations of ehhh and Will shaking his head so quickly Emma was almost worried it was going to fly off his neck.

“You were kind of being a jerk, but, you know, a funny jerk. There may be signs at the next game.”

“Honestly?”

Ruby nodded solemnly. “Ridiculous hits.”

Will exhaled, as much drama as he could seemingly put into the sound, reaching his arms out with every single one of his fingers wiggling and Emma, somehow, got a mouthful of Peggy’s hair as she moved from one set of shoulders to another. “You get me right, Pegs? You’re not going to be a jerk about the keychain thing?”

“Maybe we don’t call the three-year-old a jerk, huh?” Killian muttered.

Peggy squirmed against Will, more hair shifting in a variety of faces and a well-placed foot landing in a few internal organs. “Almost four, Daddy,” she yelled. Directly into Will’s ear.

He grimaced, but there was a bit of a smile and Emma must have put the video on loop at some point without realizing it, glancing down when she heard the last few moments for, quite possibly, the millionth time. And part of her wanted to ask more questions, but part of her couldn’t get over keychain collections and she was absolutely, one-million percent positive they were missing a very good story.

If only because Will said so at the end of the video.

“Trust me,” he grinned at the camera, a quick quirk of eyebrows and a twist of his lips. “It’s a pretty good reason.”

It took a few years to figure it out.

They were moving out of the apartment, a career over, for real this time, with boxes packed and far more jerseys than Emma realized they owned folded in even more boxes and she thought she was imaging it at first.

“Killian!”

He didn’t quite run, although it was close and if she weren’t so exhausted from trying to move downtown with three kids, one of whom was a very noisy and impatient infant, she probably would have made fun of him for that. As it was, she was sitting cross-legged on the floor of Peggy’s room with a shoebox in her hands that was close to overflowing.

“Swan, what—oh, damn, we totally look like jerks now, don’t we?”

Emma let out a watery laugh, fingers reaching out like she was touching precious jewels or gold or anything except the keychains they were. She pulled a handful out – all of them from NHL cities and not NHL cities and there might have been one in the shape of a flamingo.

There weren’t any repeats.

“How many are there?” Killian asked, voice dropping when he sank next to Emma.

“There’s got to be a hundred here. At least.”

“God, what an idiot.”

“Yeah, that’s definitely the sentiment we should be going with. You think he was doing this the whole time? Giving them to Pegs?”

Killian made a noise in the back of his throat, a mix of confusion and something that might have been overwhelming emotion and a whole team that wasn’t really that. Even after it was all over.

It might not ever really be over.

That sounded kind of menacing, though.

“Pegs,” Killian called, not taking his eyes away from the box. “Margaret!”

Emma scoffed. “Now you’ve done it.”

It took six seconds, flat, for the feet to skid to a stop behind them, not quite out of breath, but a little worried because real names were only used for real things and—“Oh,” Peggy whispered. “It’s the treasure.”

Killian’s eyes flitted towards Emma, but she could only shrug in response, lips curling up into a smile. “What do you mean, babe?” she asked.

Peggy scrunched her nose, bobbing on the balls of her feet. “Me and Uncle Will do it.”

“Yeah? How long?”

“Seasons.”

“Seasons,” Killian echoed. “More than one?”

“Yeah.”

“How many seasons?” Peggy shrugged, making a face that wasn’t much more than a twist of her mouth and incredibly wide eyes. “Margaret,” Killian continued, and her whole body sagged when she sighed. “Has it been a long time?”

It took, exactly, sixteen seconds for that response.

“Yeah,” she wavered. “Since…I don’t know, maybe when MD got hurt? Uncle Will and Aunt Belle used to keep them in their apartment then, though.”

Emma blinked. Again. And again. “With the wall thing?” Peggy nodded, and Killian’s laugh wasn’t so much relief as it was disbelief and complete belief. “Man, Cap,” Emma mumbled. “We really do look like jerks, don’t we?”

He hummed, a quick brush of his lips to her temple as he crooked his finger towards Peggy. “C’mere, little love, you’re not in trouble.”

Peggy didn’t look convinced, rocking back and forth on her feet until Killian pushed up, hauling her up his side and ignoring Emma’s objections. “It’s fine, love. Pegs,” he added, switching back to names when the endearments started getting to similar. “Did Uncle Will start buying you keychains because everyone was worried about Matt?”

Twenty-six seconds for that one.

“Yeah,” Peggy mumbled, burying her head in the crook of Killian’s neck. “And I got him ones.”

Emma didn’t expect that. She didn’t expect to find a trove of keychains under her daughter’s bed, but she definitely didn’t expect that too.

“Wait, what?” Killian asked sharply, a quick apology when he realized the way it sounded. “Where are you—you’re seven. How are you buying keychains?”

“Aunt Anna helps. And Red.”

“Do they?” Peggy nodded, wrapping her arms tighter around Killian. “Huh.”

“Articulate, Jones,” Emma grinned. She reached up to brush Peggy’s hair away from her face, getting a slightly teary-eyed look in response and Emma had to press up on her toes to kiss her daughter’s cheek. “So you and Uncle Will both have a treasure, huh? Is your bigger?”

“Way.”

“Of course it is.”

“Well, Swan,” Killian started, hitching Peggy further up. He groaned when the ends of her hair flew into his left eye. “We should display the treasure, don’t you think?”

“Absolutely.”

And Emma wasn’t really pleased when she heard Will’s breath catch, not even a week later, as soon as he jogged up the stairs and skidded to a stop in Peggy’s open door, mouth dropping when he saw it, mostly because she was kind of thrilled and the keychains, every single one that had been in more than one box, were hanging from hooks on the wall.

“Oh,” Will breathed, a quiet chuckle. “Well, that’s stupid.”

Emma nodded – only making the phone in her hand shake slightly. “Yeah, it is. You want to watch the video on loop? You do this stupid thing with your face at one point when you realize what’s going on.”

He eyed her, years of this and banter and it was kind of comforting to know that a one-man Emma Swan protection squad extended to her kids. Without question. “Yeah,” he said. “Make sure you show Rook though, ok?”

“Deal.”

Sidestep/Ortega

My Fallen Hero fic is, more or less, finally done! It features my Sidestep, Rysen Adri, and his thoughts on post game Fallen Hero: Rebirth. I seem to be doing a lot of post games.

Julia had asked a fair question—what did that kiss mean?

I’m not sure myself, all I knew is that hearing the name Rysen was sweeter than I cared to admit. Was that even my name anymore? Again, not sure. What the hell, exactly, was going on in my life? Ortega, John, Mortum, The Rangers. Ouroboros. The new name I had chosen. The thought came to me at the party, the classic description of a serpent devouring its own tail, often used to signify the cycles of the universe and the process of rebirth—and it felt right at the time—but it felt positively wonderful in the afterglow of the gala. Fitting as can be really. Reborn, baptized in flame, smoke, and blood. Definitely several bruises and broken bones. Hopefully no corpses.

An odd sentiment for a demon of Los Diablos.

          First I had considered ‘Mindflayer’, but it wasn’t exactly me, as menacing a choice as it would have been. ‘Demon’ would have been too cheesy, too on the nose. Can’t really remember what made me think of it, but it simply fit. Even now I savor it on my tongue. Ouroboros. That one news station somehow fucked it up into ‘aurabeesknees’, but they’re in the minority so I guess I can let them off the hook. May have to pay a visit at a later date, however.

          Her and I text, call, all the things kids do nowadays. I hate that I can’t get enough. Of her laugh, her smile, the damn way she seductively wiggles her eyebrows to make me blush. Fuck, I hate admitting I blush too. I’m supposed to be a damn villain, not an anime protagonist. Speaking of which, I haven’t checked up on that lately. Like at all. Been too busy with villainy things. Anime can be villainous, right? We all know the ones. Not gonna name names though, that wouldn’t be fair.

          Just skirting around my problems now though, as per usual. I keep meaning to bring up how I’ve changed (minus the specific details, of course), to say something, and yet every time I choke and bring out my classic comedic deflection bullshit instead. I’m almost entirely positive Ortega can see through that, she’s just gotten… more subtle and less brash. Well, ‘less brash’ isn’t a good way to put it. ‘More selective in her bullrushing’ is more apt. Selective dumbassery is still dumbassery. I should know, I started my own little dumbass enterprise, may as well make a sign to post around the city. I can see it now, ‘Dumbass Incorporated seeking henchs now, will provide free lunch, health, and dental’. That’ll really draw them in. You don’t see many villains offering dental anymore. Could be a real selling point for when I want to expand.

          Truth be told, I’m a fan of the whole angels and demons trope we’re playing out. Sure, being a hero is nice and all, but being bad simply feels so good. Clichés? As many as you want. Monologues? Not recommended, but certainly entertaining. The utter sense of power? Fantastic. Maniacal cackling? My favorite part. No really, there’s nothing like a good laugh over the beaten forms of your enemies.

Beaten.

          That’s right, I had beaten Julia… no, Charge, to a pulp. Herald first though, and then Lady Argent not quite as much. There’s a sense of guilt around the first two mentioned. Argent not so much. It felt good in the moment to finally feel an equal to that massive shadow that loomed over me, coddled me, treated me as glass. It felt so good to beat down that perfect picture of a hero with his own vanity in front of his adoring fans, the new guy that got everything I didn’t. Yet, I mangled the woman that I, well, I dare not use the word. Then after learning that Herald wasn’t just a fan of Sidestep, but that Sidestep was his idol? His hero (pardon the pun)? I didn’t think it would hit me this hard but Jesus-fucking-Christ. Just another person I let down. No. No, not me. Sidestep. Sidestep let him down. Ouroboros simply fought him. That’s all. No more, no less.

          Of course, that feels like a lie, though at the same time, it doesn’t? It was difficult enough trying to distinguish Rysen from John sometimes—if Rysen even truly existed anymore—but now I have to differentiate three personas. Four if you included Sidestep, but they are firmly dead and gone. The exhibit, or rather lack thereof, is proof enough of that. I wonder how Ortega feels about it. Angry that someone defiled the memory of the former hero? Motivated for pay back? Does she not care? That would almost feel the worst, and I don’t know why, and I hate it.

God, I can hear her words now, ‘Don’t say you hate things so much, it’ll make you ugly on the inside’. Well guess-fucking-what, Julia. I’m ugly on the inside now. Or have I always been? Everything’s kind of a blur since Heartbreak, which is a long time. Seven years now, more like seven and a half. Yet it all felt like nothing. A bittersweet blob of memory, oddly enough. Incredibly bittersweet.

Should I ask her out on a date? She had promised one. Would that be going too far, however? Too close? Too prone to liability? I’m already in the position, what’s the threat of a little more tragedy in the already turbulent storm? Villains thrive on tragedy, right? Why am I asking so many questions? Too many already.

Fuck it, I’m gonna ask her. Not over the phone, that seems a tad disingenuous. When she asked me to the gala she asked me to meet in person, I should do the same. I’m sure as hell not going to the Rangers HQ. Don’t want to give myself away, let alone the fact that I’d feel like I was asking Steel if Ortega was home and if I could talk to her as if he were her dad. ‘Excuse me, Mr.Chen, is Julia home?’. As team leader was he the dad of the troop? Herald’s the baby and Argent the angsty teen, so definitely. Dear gods, Steel’s a father. Devils help us all. He certainly has the glare down.

I still miss him oddly enough. Not enough to give up my life of crime and don Sidestep’s mask once more. Hell no. I’m not even sure if it’s still in one piece. I’m not sure I want to know.

          Would I do it for Ortega though? As much as I’d love to help, I can’t, I just can’t. Y’know, aside from being a villain now and all, I just… couldn’t. The thought of feeling that thin nanomesh over my form alone made me want to chuck my skin like a meatbag alias. I guess in my position it really is a meatbag alias that I can toss aside whenever I so wish. Rysen and John. I often wonder what would happen if I just decided to live in John full time. What would happen if Rysen were to die while I were inhabiting John’s body. Would I—my consciousness that is—die? Would I just be stuck in a head blind body for the rest of said body’s life? Become him in every sense of the word. I don’t see why not, not that I’m seriously considering it or anything. Though the thought of resigning to a life of underworld business alongside Doctor Mortum isn’t half bad. Not one bit.

          Sometimes dating Mortum as John and trying to respark the old flame with Ortega as Rysen at the same time feels wrong, feels weird, but then I remember that Ortega was flirting with both John and Rysen at the same time, so I guess that totally excuses bad behavior. Definitely. I mean, she’s the master of flings, or at least was. It’s an interesting debate if nothing else. When I’m playing John, I’m still me and yet not. I’m john. John’s even developed his own mannerisms and behaviors, things Rysen would never do or wouldn’t even think of. I suppose this is like how superheroes have their hero and civilian identities. Both are just as real, right? And functionally they’re different people. This is way too much like way too many science-fiction pieces on the self and personal identity. I take ghost in the shell to an entirely other, meaty level

          But boy oh boy, Los Dioblos, hold onto your pants; you’ve heard of the double identity, I now present the triple identity! Groundbreaking, truly. Worn down, tired and retired telepath. Villain representative who just wants to keep his boss happy, hoping to get his cake and eat it too. Then finally the villain himself, Ouroboros, mastermind behind the impossibly elaborate plans. Ok, no one knows Ouroboros is a he, but that’s a good thing. The longer they’re all guessing, the better. I thought balancing Rysen and John was difficult, but Rysen, John, and Ouroboros? Son of a bitch, I didn’t know one person could get this tired. Thank the universe for coffee. Lots of cream lots of sugar preferred, but I’m not too terribly picky in a pinch, I already buy the cheap shit as is. Cheap ol’ Rysen. Yep. That’s me.

I keep talking about all these different identities, and yet I keep coming back to Rysen. Rysen. Rysen. Fuckin’ Rysen. I’m beginning to grow tired of the name. After… everything, I fully expected to shove off that particular shell of a man when I made my debut. I was apparently wrong. He keeps coming after me like a damn ghost. Ortega coming back into the mix certainly didn’t help, any chance of falling off the map died with her recognizing me in the diner. Oh well, I suppose, no plan survives first contact. I should really be surprised it didn’t all snag sooner. A lot sooner. Oh, but what a snag. That jawline, those lips, and gods above, those biceps.

She gives excellent hugs. Yep. That’s definitely what I like about them. The only thing.

          It was only recently that I realized a good memory I often draw upon—one of my few good memories—was that of Ortega kissing me after a particularly hard fight. She almost always initiated, and one time she even used her sparkles to shock my own lips ever so gently. I miss that sensation, funny enough, even if it was only the once. And, despite the fact that she always looked at me like I was fragile, she gave me this look like I was wanted. Like I belonged. Another thing I hate to admit, but I belong in her arms.

Fuck, what am I thinking? I shouldn’t allow myself to think like that, and yet such was the tendency of any good snag.

One other thing I hate to admit to myself—I love her. Son of a bitch, I always loved her, and I regret never telling her.

          I don’t think I could work up the courage to tell her though. Not then, not now, not ever. Aside from not being able to afford it, I don’t have the guts. Attacking a gala with some of Los Diablos’ richest and finest? No problem, just give me some time to plan. Facing a woman significantly larger than me on a date, looking at me with a sweetness in her eye? Nah nah nah nah nah. No way. Can’t do it. I’m weak, absolutely weak. Positively weak.

I hate myself.

          Julia doesn’t want me talking like that, she already made me promise to see a shrink, but she’s not here, inside my head walking down the street to get a cup of sweet, sweet addiction. She can’t dictate my self-talk. Except myself no one can. I doubt it will change any time soon, therapy or no. I hope the couch is comfy enough though. They always look comfy in the movies and on tv. Teary eyed tortured souls letting out their deepest secrets to some stranger taking notes on their entire life. Ew. Probably won’t tell them about the whole villain thing. I wouldn’t go at all and lie about it if I knew Julia would keep tabs on me and make sure I went. She’d probably drag me there herself. She always did care like that.

Oh well, she won’t leave me alone; but that’s a good thing, right? Because damn, what a kiss.

The thought came to me at the party, the classic description of a serpent devouring its own tail, often used to signify the cycles of the universe and the process of rebirth—and it felt right at the time—but it felt positively wonderful in the afterglow of the gala. Fitting as can be really. Reborn, baptized in flame, smoke, and blood. Definitely several bruises and broken bones. Hopefully no corpses.

An odd sentiment for a demon of Los Diablos.

          First I had considered ‘Mindflayer’, but it wasn’t exactly me, as menacing a choice as it would have been. ‘Demon’ would have been too cheesy, too on the nose. Can’t really remember what made me think of it, but it simply fit. Even now I savor it on my tongue. Ouroboros. That one news station somehow fucked it up into ‘aurabeesknees’, but they’re in the minority so I guess I can let them off the hook. May have to pay a visit at a later date, however.

          Her and I text, call, all the things kids do nowadays. I hate that I can’t get enough. Of her laugh, her smile, the damn way she seductively wiggles her eyebrows to make me blush. Fuck, I hate admitting I blush too. I’m supposed to be a damn villain, not an anime protagonist. Speaking of which, I haven’t checked up on that lately. Like at all. Been too busy with villainy things. Anime can be villainous, right? We all know the ones. Not gonna name names though, that wouldn’t be fair.

          Just skirting around my problems now though, as per usual. I keep meaning to bring up how I’ve changed (minus the specific details, of course), to say something, and yet every time I choke and bring out my classic comedic deflection bullshit instead. I’m almost entirely positive Ortega can see through that, she’s just gotten… more subtle and less brash. Well, ‘less brash’ isn’t a good way to put it. ‘More selective in her bullrushing’ is more apt. Selective dumbassery is still dumbassery. I should know, I started my own little dumbass enterprise, may as well make a sign to post around the city. I can see it now, ‘Dumbass Incorporated seeking henchs now, will provide free lunch, health, and dental’. That’ll really draw them in. You don’t see many villains offering dental anymore. Could be a real selling point for when I want to expand.

          Truth be told, I’m a fan of the whole angels and demons trope we’re playing out. Sure, being a hero is nice and all, but being bad simply feels so good. Clichés? As many as you want. Monologues? Not recommended, but certainly entertaining. The utter sense of power? Fantastic. Maniacal cackling? My favorite part. No really, there’s nothing like a good laugh over the beaten forms of your enemies.

Beaten.

          That’s right, I had beaten Julia… no, Charge, to a pulp. Herald first though, and then Lady Argent not quite as much. There’s a sense of guilt around the first two mentioned. Argent not so much. It felt good in the moment to finally feel an equal to that massive shadow that loomed over me, coddled me, treated me as glass. It felt so good to beat down that perfect picture of a hero with his own vanity in front of his adoring fans, the new guy that got everything I didn’t. Yet, I mangled the woman that I, well, I dare not use the word. Then after learning that Herald wasn’t just a fan of Sidestep, but that Sidestep was his idol? His hero (pardon the pun)? I didn’t think it would hit me this hard but Jesus-fucking-Christ. Just another person I let down. No. No, not me. Sidestep. Sidestep let him down. Ouroboros simply fought him. That’s all. No more, no less.

          Of course, that feels like a lie, though at the same time, it doesn’t? It was difficult enough trying to distinguish Rysen from John sometimes—if Rysen even truly existed anymore—but now I have to differentiate three personas. Four if you included Sidestep, but they are firmly dead and gone. The exhibit, or rather lack thereof, is proof enough of that. I wonder how Ortega feels about it. Angry that someone defiled the memory of the former hero? Motivated for pay back? Does she not care? That would almost feel the worst, and I don’t know why, and I hate it.

God, I can hear her words now, ‘Don’t say you hate things so much, it’ll make you ugly on the inside’. Well guess-fucking-what, Julia. I’m ugly on the inside now. Or have I always been? Everything’s kind of a blur since Heartbreak, which is a long time. Seven years now, more like seven and a half. Yet it all felt like nothing. A bittersweet blob of memory, oddly enough. Incredibly bittersweet.

Should I ask her out on a date? She had promised one. Would that be going too far, however? Too close? Too prone to liability? I’m already in the position, what’s the threat of a little more tragedy in the already turbulent storm? Villains thrive on tragedy, right? Why am I asking so many questions? Too many already.

Fuck it, I’m gonna ask her. Not over the phone, that seems a tad disingenuous. When she asked me to the gala she asked me to meet in person, I should do the same. I’m sure as hell not going to the Rangers HQ. Don’t want to give myself away, let alone the fact that I’d feel like I was asking Steel if Ortega was home and if I could talk to her as if he were her dad. ‘Excuse me, Mr.Chen, is Julia home?’. As team leader was he the dad of the troop? Herald’s the baby and Argent the angsty teen, so definitely. Dear gods, Steel’s a father. Devils help us all. He certainly has the glare down.

I still miss him oddly enough. Not enough to give up my life of crime and don Sidestep’s mask once more. Hell no. I’m not even sure if it’s still in one piece. I’m not sure I want to know.

          Would I do it for Ortega though? As much as I’d love to help, I can’t, I just can’t. Y’know, aside from being a villain now and all, I just… couldn’t. The thought of feeling that thin nanomesh over my form alone made me want to chuck my skin like a meatbag alias. I guess in my position it really is a meatbag alias that I can toss aside whenever I so wish. Rysen and John. I often wonder what would happen if I just decided to live in John full time. What would happen if Rysen were to die while I were inhabiting John’s body. Would I—my consciousness that is—die? Would I just be stuck in a head blind body for the rest of said body’s life? Become him in every sense of the word. I don’t see why not, not that I’m seriously considering it or anything. Though the thought of resigning to a life of underworld business alongside Doctor Mortum isn’t half bad. Not one bit.

          Sometimes dating Mortum as John and trying to respark the old flame with Ortega as Rysen at the same time feels wrong, feels weird, but then I remember that Ortega was flirting with both John and Rysen at the same time, so I guess that totally excuses bad behavior. Definitely. I mean, she’s the master of flings, or at least was. It’s an interesting debate if nothing else. When I’m playing John, I’m still me and yet not. I’m john. John’s even developed his own mannerisms and behaviors, things Rysen would never do or wouldn’t even think of. I suppose this is like how superheroes have their hero and civilian identities. Both are just as real, right? And functionally they’re different people. This is way too much like way too many science-fiction pieces on the self and personal identity. I take ghost in the shell to an entirely other, meaty level

          But boy oh boy, Los Dioblos, hold onto your pants; you’ve heard of the double identity, I now present the triple identity! Groundbreaking, truly. Worn down, tired and retired telepath. Villain representative who just wants to keep his boss happy, hoping to get his cake and eat it too. Then finally the villain himself, Ouroboros, mastermind behind the impossibly elaborate plans. Ok, no one knows Ouroboros is a he, but that’s a good thing. The longer they’re all guessing, the better. I thought balancing Rysen and John was difficult, but Rysen, John, and Ouroboros? Son of a bitch, I didn’t know one person could get this tired. Thank the universe for coffee. Lots of cream lots of sugar preferred, but I’m not too terribly picky in a pinch, I already buy the cheap shit as is. Cheap ol’ Rysen. Yep. That’s me.

I keep talking about all these different identities, and yet I keep coming back to Rysen. Rysen. Rysen. Fuckin’ Rysen. I’m beginning to grow tired of the name. After… everything, I fully expected to shove off that particular shell of a man when I made my debut. I was apparently wrong. He keeps coming after me like a damn ghost. Ortega coming back into the mix certainly didn’t help, any chance of falling off the map died with her recognizing me in the diner. Oh well, I suppose, no plan survives first contact. I should really be surprised it didn’t all snag sooner. A lot sooner. Oh, but what a snag. That jawline, those lips, and gods above, those biceps.

She gives excellent hugs. Yep. That’s definitely what I like about them. The only thing.

          It was only recently that I realized a good memory I often draw upon—one of my few good memories—was that of Ortega kissing me after a particularly hard fight. She almost always initiated, and one time she even used her sparkles to shock my own lips ever so gently. I miss that sensation, funny enough, even if it was only the once. And, despite the fact that she always looked at me like I was fragile, she gave me this look like I was wanted. Like I belonged. Another thing I hate to admit, but I belong in her arms.

Fuck, what am I thinking? I shouldn’t allow myself to think like that, and yet such was the tendency of any good snag.

One other thing I hate to admit to myself—I love her. Son of a bitch, I always loved her, and I regret never telling her.

          I don’t think I could work up the courage to tell her though. Not then, not now, not ever. Aside from not being able to afford it, I don’t have the guts. Attacking a gala with some of Los Diablos’ richest and finest? No problem, just give me some time to plan. Facing a woman significantly larger than me on a date, looking at me with a sweetness in her eye? Nah nah nah nah nah. No way. Can’t do it. I’m weak, absolutely weak. Positively weak.

I hate myself.

          Julia doesn’t want me talking like that, she already made me promise to see a shrink, but she’s not here, inside my head walking down the street to get a cup of sweet, sweet addiction. She can’t dictate my self-talk. Except myself no one can. I doubt it will change any time soon, therapy or no. I hope the couch is comfy enough though. They always look comfy in the movies and on tv. Teary eyed tortured souls letting out their deepest secrets to some stranger taking notes on their entire life. Ew. Probably won’t tell them about the whole villain thing. I wouldn’t go at all and lie about it if I knew Julia would keep tabs on me and make sure I went. She’d probably drag me there herself. She always did care like that.

Oh well, she won’t leave me alone; but that’s a good thing, right? Because damn, what a kiss.

“Tombstone” (1993): cowboys and gay subtext

Disclaimer: I wrote this text long time ago, when we first heard the title of the episode, and we knew perfectly nothing about the plot - I just somehow never got to posting it. Back then I never DREAMED that we will be getting Cas and Dean roleplaying Texas rangers, and running around in cowboy hats. (What a time to be alive!) Anyway, I hope this little rant about how “Tombstone” (1993) is relevant to tomorrow’s episode will still be fun to read.

Disclaimer 2: I do not equal effeminate/weak bodied/flamboyant = gay, just different from the surroundings in the context of this movie. At the same time, the movie uses cheap stereotypes to characterize their characters in subtext.  It is 1990s, and this is not good, but it happened back then.

File it under the “Things I do because of my “Supernatural” obsession”: I watch and read stuff I hadn’t expected to before I started watching the show - you know, like a 1993 western telling the story of the legendary gunman Wyatt Earp and his two brothers, hunting and killing some Old West gang of outlaws in a frontier town.

Nevertheless, I did watch it, and now I will write about it because I am painfully aware that episode 13x06 is called “Tombstone”, that it has a western theme, and that it’s an episode by the writer who gave us “Stuck in the Middle with You” (12x12). It is therefore quite possible that the source material is relevant to the final product - plus with Tarantino being a western buff, it all connects nicely.

I will not speculate about the actual episode since we have almost nothing to go on at the moment - besides a few pictures from which we can gather a couple of facts:

The boys are most probably in Dodge City at some point (we saw pictures from the set saying “Dodge City” on one of the buildings). The city is about 3,5 hour drive from Lebanon - where the bunker is - and it was here Wyatt Earp was the sheriff before he moved to Tombstone. It also is “the cowboy capital of the US” because of it being the main city on the old “cattle trail”, famous for its cow markets and for its gunfights. We saw Dodge City on the show once before when Krissy’s dad was attacked in “Adventures in Babysitting”, but otherwise this is the first time we visit it,

We also know that at some point we will visit a cowboy-themed motel.

[While all of this gives us no story hints whatsoever, I think it’s safe to assume that the keywords for the episode are “cowboys” and “western”. Since Davy Perez’ most noteworthy episode last year was Tarantino themed, I am not remotely surprised this season for him is “westerns” (he is also bringing us the train heist episode later this season - yes, please.)]

I can, however, present the movie “Tombstone” that may or may not have something to do with the final episode (we’ll see). As I am aware that not everyone is as dedicated (read: bored and obsessed) as me to check out every pop culture reference on the show, I decided to share my newly aquired wisdom with the class.

Ok, so the story. The movie tells a (rather idealized) version of the shootout that occured in the frontier town of Tombstone, Arizona, between Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan Earp (plus their friend, Doc Holliday) and the gang of outlaws who called themselves “the Cowboys” - known as the gunfight at OK Corral. I will talk just about the movie here (since the historical truth is a little different, and a compare-and-contrast historical analysis is not what we need right now).

So, Wyatt Earp got famous being the marshall of Dodge City, while also being a pacifist and trying to avoid starting conflicts as much as possible. Tombstone was supposed to be his retirement - he wanted to settle down, finally having his family around, and earn some money for a comfortable and silent life. He came to Tombstone together with his two brothers and their wives; upon arrival, he found out that his best friend, Doc Holliday, also ended up in the town, searching for his luck and trying to cure his TB - an illness that will later kill him at the age of 35. 

We meet Wyatt Earp when he has people closest to his heart right around him, and is very content with his life. He is also very adamant to leave the past and the fame behind, and start a completely new chapter in Arizona. The Earp brothers find out very quickly, however, that Tombstone is very far from the sleepy abode the name might suggest. The town is full of colourful characters - gamblers, gunslingers, preachers, prostitutes, outlaws etc. And of course there is a conflict boiling just below the surface.

Unwillingly, one by one the Earp party is pulled back into being the law officers again, and into the bloody frontier war.

SPOILERS AHEAD (you know, if you wanna watch the movie yourself)

So many themes here that remind me of SPN!

We have a duty bound man who meets a maverick and outgoing woman. She offers him excitement and adventures, and of course he falls for her, but doesn’t let himself have what he wants because of his mission, his situation (he was married at the time), and the need to act honourably. He is, however, perfectly aware of his feelings and that a part of this behaviour is fear of following his heart because he had never done this before in his life;

It takes a death of his closest friend to realize life is too short, and he should go for what he wants, which he does;

Before this, however, he follows the murder of one of his brothers by going on a shooting spree, and killing every bad guy he can find until they all are eradicated,

There is also so much gay subtext between two of the characters that the movie is always mentioned when “gay westerns before Brokeback Mountain” are discussed.

“Tombstone” as a lesson in gay subtext:

It is never mentioned in the movie that Billy Zane and Jason Priestley’s characters are gay. Yet, it is so obvious from the way they are portrayed that even people who are not used to reading subtext are perfectly aware the two characters are most probably lovers.

The characterization

The first thing we notice is the look of the characters. The two man are both dressed in a way that differenciates them from the enviroment around them - Billy Zane’s Fabian is completely different from the masculine world of the Old West, with his soft hair, boyish good looks, clean shaven face, and elaborate outfits.

Jason Priestley’s Billy is more in accordance with the tough world of Tombstone - he is the deputy sheriff after all, and can be tough when needed - but still, in his time off he is portrayed as soft, effeminate, especially while contrasted with the criminals he usually runs with. His outfit is not too different from everyone else’s, but he is the only person to wear a bowtie (everyone else wears neckties or bandanas) and spectacles. He is portrayed as a slightly weaker and more vulnerable person.

Exposition in relation to other characters

The two characters sexuality is shown, not talked about, especially through the kind of interractions they have with other people.

We meet Fabian when he steps out of a carriage, all confident, flamboyant, well-groomed and witty. His person awakens the reaction in the manly-men of the West, which is shown by Morgan Earp asking the local sheriff “What kind of town is this?” (at which point Wyatt shushes him, as if he said something offensive). 

To hammer the point home, Fabian is an actor who travels with a gorgeous woman, but obviously has no sexual interest in her - they are best buddies who ogle the Earps together, and comment on their attractiveness.

As for Billy, we meet him when he arrives at the theatre to see the actors’ performance, and right away he is shown bullied by the Cowboys. The quips obviously refer to his sexuality (“Hey, sister boy, gimme some!”). He doesn’t try to shoot them down, just tries to avoid being touched. Quickly he is “saved” by the leader of the gang, and seated beside him. Shortly afterwards the camera shows us the difference between the Cowboys and the deputy sheriff’s approach to Fabian onstage (mocking vs in awe).

Later, during a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, Billy grabs Fabian in the saloon, and cordially invites him to his table. This is the last time we see the two men together, alive.

Fast forward to the end of the movie: Billy is riding around with the Cowboys while Wyatt Earp runs around, shooting everything he can find. The outlaws stop a carriage and find the actress and Fabian in the back: the actor is dead, shot by the Cowboys. Everything here happens completely beside the dialogue and the rest of the scene. Billy watches dead Fabian while the actress holds her dead friend, and angrily discusses the war with the leader of the gang.

It is never said out loud that Bily and Fabian are lovers. It is still pretty damn obvious. It is perfectly clear from the way they are presented, their interactions with other characters, and the (very limited) onscreen interactions with each other.

“Tombstone” is a cowboy movie that takes a step towards the actual reality of the Wild West, and makes it almost textual. Homosexuality was a natural part of the cowboy lifestyle - it was after all a society full of men, where the men to women ratio was around 8:1. Everyone had needs, not everyone had money, and love and sexual encounters between men were as common as in any other, similar enviroment. There is a reason why the uber-masculine cowboy stereotype is one of the main figures in American gay iconology - think everything from “Midnight Cowboy” to The Village People and “Brokeback Mountain”.

Why Davy Perez chose to call his episode after the kettle-market town in Arizona, but also after the movie with such a strong gay subtext?

What to Cook This Weekend

Good morning. Nowruz, the Persian New Year, is tomorrow, and, if the feasting and exchanging of presents will be muted this year because of the pandemic, we’ve still got loads of recipes appropriate to the holiday. Take a look at Samin Nosrat’s khoresh-e fesenjoon, for instance, a Persian chicken stew with pomegranate molasses and walnuts (above). You could serve that with salad-e shirazi, a salad of cucumber, tomatoes and onion. That would be a very nice meal. (And it would yield tremendous leftovers, too.)

Passover, meanwhile, doesn’t start until the 27th, but my inbox is already filling with requests for recipes to use for the smaller gatherings required by this pandemic year.

Susan Spungen to the rescue! She’s got an ace lineup prepared, recipes you could bookmark for later or make right away, in a kind of practice round. (I find that making a dish for the first time for a holiday is a recipe for … stress.) Take a look at her chicken with apricots, green olives and shallots. She has a marvelous whole roasted cauliflower with pistachio-cilantro pesto. Here’s a lovely matzo brei frittata. And some sweet potatoes with tsimmes glaze. Coconut macaroons with chocolate for dessert? Yes, please.

Late to it, but Carl Hiaasen’s farewell column in the Miami Herald is, like all his work, worth savoring.

You should spend some time with Julia Moskin’s amazing Times article about a year in the life of the restaurants and food businesses along a stretch of Cortelyou Road in the Ditmas Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, where the pandemic brought hardship and opportunity in different measures.

Finally, do read Christopher Ketcham’s stinging indictment of the National Park Service, “The Business of Scenery,” in Harper’s. “If you love a place,” a retired ranger tells him, “don’t make it a national park.” I’ll see you on Sunday.

“Unsurprisingly, the tale had its start in a dedicated conspiracy theory mill, the home office of Linda Thompson, a 40-year-old anti-government activist. 1993 was a busy year for her. She quit her job and went full-time into conspiracy mongering. In that year she produced Waco: The Big Lie, the seminal video that launched the claims that the government murdered the Branch Davidians. In the course of researching that project, she compiled a list of 24 people whom she believed, based on her own intuition, that Bill Clinton must have had killed during his rise to power. She lobbied various congressmen to investigate her beliefs, and was finally successful at persuading William Dannemeyer to take up her cause. Dannemeyer had just retired from the House of Representatives, but was, like Thompson, a full-throttle conspiracy theorist, Biblical literalist, and antisemite. On his website TakeBackOurRights.org, he has written something of a manifesto that includes the word jew 88 times, and says:

No American should underestimate the ferocity of the commitment of the Zionist Jews to control the entire political system of the world through the One World Government now being created, and in so doing administer "Justice" as they define it.

Dannemeyer sent Thompson's list to as many congresspeople as he could, and urged them to take action, and administer justice as he defined it. Fortunately his ramblings were not taken seriously. Thompson, meanwhile, expanded her list to 34 and self-published it as a pamphlet titled The Clinton Body Count: Coincidence or the Kiss of Death? Boosted by promotion from conspiracy-hungry alternative media outlets, the Clinton Body Count thus entered pop culture.

Incidentally, Thompson's pamphlet is widely available online as a PDF, but I don't recommend reading it. It is not very coherent. It's full of implausible assertions, it never gives any sources or references for its wild statements, and it finally devolves into random anti-government rants and statutory citations. My guess is she had psychological issues. Nevertheless, her writings are the strength upon which the Clinton Body Count conspiracy theory is based. But what of her specific claims? Who are the people on The Body Count list? These days the list is longer, having been expanded by Internet denizens, and it can be found on conspiracy websites such as ForbiddenKnowledge.com, GovtSlaves.info, and TruthOrFiction.com. The most famous name on the list is Vince Foster. Foster had been a partner at Hillary Clinton's firm in Arkansas, and when Bill Clinton became President, he joined them as Deputy White House Counsel. But he was ill-prepared for life under the magnifying glass of the public eye. He underwent treatment for clinical depression and lost weight, and then the perfect storm of Clinton controversies hit him: Whitewater, Travelgate, Madison Guaranty. The newspapers attacked him relentlessly, and he shot himself dead in a park in Virginia. In his briefcase was a handwritten draft letter of resignation, torn to pieces, in which he asserted his and the Clintons' innocence in the scandals and bemoaned his inability to handle the stresses of his new life. Five separate investigations over five years all came to the same conclusion, that Vince Foster had killed himself. Yet Linda Thompson decided to add some dramatic elements. She bizarrely claimed that the White House (whoever that means) ordered his death to be investigated only by "park rangers", and not by the FBI (it was in fact investigated by the FBI in addition to the US Park Police who had jurisdiction). She claimed his briefcase and personal items were "gone through" by the White House (whoever that means) instead of by law enforcement. She oddly claimed that Foster's resignation letter only appeared in his briefcase three days after his death, and that a palm print was found on it that was "never investigated". She said the gun was not his and was placed in his hand after his death, but it was in fact his gun, and forensics showed it was in his hand at his death. Thompson just made things up to suit her preferred version of events. Here is how the incisive pen of Snopes.com's Barbara Mikkelson described Thompson's rhetoric:

This laundry list of deaths always refers to someone taking his life as "ruled a suicide," thus implying another conclusion of equal likelihood was capriciously dismissed by someone who had the power to do so. From here on, read "ruled a suicide" as "an investigation was carried out, arriving at this as the only reasonable conclusion."

There's no need to go into the rest of the Body Count list; their cases are all similar to this in that there's neither evidence nor logical motive to suspect the Clintons of being involved. None of the deaths were suspicious in any way; they are mostly car accidents and plane crashes. It's insufficient to say any given death was "consistent with" the Clintons ordering them killed. There's a big difference between consistent with and evidence of. Evidence would be the goon squad triggermen showing us the check from Bill Clinton's bank account. So far, nobody has even suggested the existence of evidence for any of these supposed crimes.”

So this is all really interesting, especially if you’re into statistics. It tears apart the fallacies at the heart of the Clinton “Body Count” “Scandal”. [UPDATE - ADVICE WANTED]

hey, all. have some pretty major updates. this is gonna be a really rambly post, there’s a tl;dr at the end.

long story short, i’m selling ranger. it’s something i’ve been considering for quite some time given that i have been consistently getting worse in the show ring and at home. the way i see it, the horse loves me and i love him, but we feed off of each other’s anxiety so badly that it’s in essence ruined both of us for one another. i’ve been entertaining the idea for several months, and the recent hunter show i went to kinda sealed the deal. we had a good run, and i have no resentment towards the horse at all; i want him to be happy, but that’s just not with me anymore.

i do have someone already interested in his purchase at the barn, so for now i’m not going to be seriously advertising him, but if that falls through i may well be. just want him to have a good home and a confident rider that can soothe his nerves. in the meantime, i’ll be searching for a more suitable horse. thoughts on potential horses below the cut. if you’re in the area and have another horse that i might like, feel free to let me know, or if you have thoughts on the horses i’m considering don’t hesitate to chip in.

i have two horses in mind that couldn’t be more different, whom i’ll describe for the sake of working it out in my mind. an unofficial list of things i’d like in a new horse, though obviously it’s unlikely that with my price range i’ll be able to check all the boxes: - inexpensive ($5k) - if it’s more expensive, a payment plan is definitely preferable - push ride (literally do not care if i have to carry a crop and/or spurs constantly, in fact that’s probably preferred given the circumstances) - small-ish (15-16hh) - not terribly spooky (don’t care if it jumps or shies every now and again, but i’m really not in a place to deal with bolting, bucking, rearing, etc.) - sound (i understand minor things, but if it’s lame every month it’s really not going to work) able to event up to beginner novice level (if it can go further, great, but i doubt i’m going to advance all that far given the circumstances) - breed really doesn’t matter, though a solid build is much preferred (and, admittedly, i have a giant soft spot for mustangs, drafty things, and cowhorses) - okay with other horses - i don’t mind if it’s a bit of a bully, but it needs to deal with being turned out w 5+ horses 24/7 (i’d definitely appreciate a horse that isn’t terribly herd-bound, but i’ve dealt with herd anxiety before and am more than willing to do it again) - sex doesn’t much bother me, though stallions are out of the question on a farm full of mares - i’m not interested in a huge project, but if it’s not fully trained (i.e. doesn’t fully understand dressage, is only jumping crossrails, etc.) i’m willing to work with it - versatility is definitely nice - while eventing is my main thing, a horse that can have a western saddle slapped onto it and do just fine is certainly an attractive prospect

i know that i’m asking for a lot - thankfully, i have options that seem viable that i’ll be having a look at in the upcoming weeks. the first is a thoroughbred mare and a retired polo pony. the owner claims that she’s a definite kick ride and an extremely quiet and kid-safe animal. she’s around 12 years old and stands 15.2 hands high. she’s been jumped and is proven to be very quiet; i have yet to hear anything about her dressage experience. she is not for sale; the owner has offered her as a free lease to someone at my farm who thoroughly loves her and will take care of her. i will still be responsible for board, but vet bills and such are covered. the owner says that if something goes wrong, i’m free to return her without any questions asked. several years ago the mare tore up a deep digital flexor tendon; nowadays she has little flexibility in that leg, though the owner swears since then she’s never taken a lame step and it never bothers her. again, if the leg blows up i’m free to return her without any issues. my trainer knows the lessor well and trusts her greatly, but i’ve never met the mare before and know nothing about her, not even her name. as well, it’s unlikely that i’d be able to lease her to someone else (something we need as my financial situation is precarious), and leases can always be tricky as you never know when the owner might decide to take the horse back up (while that’s doubtful considering the circumstances, it’s something to keep in mind).

the second is a mustang mare from the old barn i used to ride at. she’s four, two years off the range, and broke to saddle for about one and a half years. obviously she’s still green, though she’s surprisingly experienced given her circumstances; she halts, pivots, sidepasses, and jumps (all shown in videos and actually very impressive). as well, she’s incredibly drafty in build and of my knowledge has never been lame. she’s a hair under 15 hands, maybe slightly small for me but definitely a tough little thing. she’s been to multiple shows and has trail ridden on her own and with other horses and lives on a farm with a ton of livestock; according to the owner, she has a little spook in her - don’t know what that entails but knowing her it’s probably nothing much. her temperament is listed as extremely calm, and from my experience working with her (only on the ground, of course), she’s very easy to calm down when she gets worked up and seems to be quite a push ride. she has some liberty training and has been started both western and english. i don’t know how high she can jump nor how she’d deal with cross-country fences. unlike the other horse i know her farm well; she gets almost no turnout, which makes her quietness all the more attractive, and i trust the owner and know that she wants the best for the horse and i. they’re asking $2.2k, though i don’t doubt they’d be willing to negotiate and let her go on trial. i’m unsure if i have the time to work with and train such a green horse, but it’s an attractive prospect and something i’ve always wanted to try. my trainer, obviously, isn’t a fan of the idea of putting her nervous student on a four-year-old, but seeing as i know the mare and the farm she comes from she’s agreed to take a look at her.

of course, i’ll be changing my url relatively soon - i’ll definitely let everyone know. in a way, this is a bit of an exciting opportunity; until now i’ve yet to really get to try out a lot of different horses. i’m well aware which one is the sensible choice and which one is the risky one, but seeing as i’ve always had my heart set on a mustang, especially one i could work with myself (with the help of a trainer, of course), i definitely debate on what will make me happy in the long run. if you have any advice or words of comfort, i’d much appreciate it; even though i know well this is for the best, i’m still devastated at having to lose ranger and worried about the prospect of starting over on a new horse. ultimately, i just want ranger to have a good home and i want to gain back my confidence. like i said, we had a good run, and i’m gonna miss his dumb face, but it’s time to move on to bigger and better things.

TL;DR: ranger and i are not a match, have an interested buyer but if that falls through he will be posted for sale. seeking a quiet, smaller, versatile event horse. debating between purchasing a younger mustang mare or free-leasing an older thoroughbred mare, though more than willing to look at other prospects. blog will be receiving updates as i transition between horses.

Dropping Gloves...in the Name of Festive Fashion

It’s probably one of the more ridiculous things any of them have ever done. It’s also one of the better ideas any of them has ever had – it’s festive and in the spirit and the fans will love it. And maybe it’s kind of fun because it ends with another win and some positive press before the break and Phillip’s jacket is really just...a work of fashion art. 

The way Emma laughs at his jacket and sweater combination a few hours before puck drop is just a bonus. 

AN: Once again, I have no excuse for this. I am...vaguely stressed out in the real world side of my life and the Rangers keep winning games, which makes me want to write Blue Line things and steal ideas from the Boston Bruins. Anyway, here’s 3K’ish worth of vaguely festive words and everyone sassing each other and Emma and Killian making out in other hockey arenas that aren’t the Garden. Also. It was Scarlet’s idea.

Of course it was. It was insane. The only person who would think it was a good idea was Scarlet. That was, however, until Ruby heard about it. And promptly let out a screech so loud that Killian was momentarily concerned she was going to, somehow, do damage to the paint on the locker room wall. “God, Lucas,” he mumbled, dropping back into the bench behind him and Emma shot him a look. Killian grinned in response, a flash of teeth and his tongue pressed into the corner of his mouth and she rolled her eyes.

“You’re an idiot,” Emma mumbled, but there was a note of something just on the edge of her voice and she didn’t say anything before she walked towards him, fingers finding the bottom of his hair.

Ruby glared at both of them. “I don’t want to hear it, Cap,” she said, crossing her arms like that would, somehow, make it all sound more official. “This is a good idea. We could get picked up by a shit ton of sites.”

“Is that the goal?”

Will laughed from some unseen corner of the locker room, the sound bouncing off the walls and, somehow, mixing with Ruby’s glare and the effect left Killian without much of an argument or a metaphorical leg to stand out.

“Would we classify that as a cliché?” Robin asked, walking back into the main room with ice taped to his shoulder and a pair of questionably adorable kids wearing jerseys behind him. “Or just like...a really bad joke?” “The second one,” Emma mumbled and Will cackled from wherever he was. Probably getting his leg checked after he blocked that shot in the second period and he was going to talk about that for, at least, a week.

Killian glanced up, eyeing Emma with something that felt a bit like stunned and impressed and maybe just like she was the center of the universe or something. The specifics weren’t important. “You wound me, Swan,” he said, but Will was still laughing and even Ruby was trying to turn whatever sound she was making into something that was almost a cough.

“Yeah, definitely the second one,” Robin agreed. “It’s because he thinks we’re all going to look better than him.” “That’s because we are,” Will shouted and Killian rolled his eyes, letting his head fall back against Emma’s side. She smiled.

“You know you don’t have to wear anything too ridiculous, Cap. We’re not even going to be here so the odds of The Post picking it up first is like...slim to none. Just you know, wear a hat or something.” “I mean, that’s not totally true,” Ruby muttered. “It’s not like the journalism industry is so hard up that they don’t send beat reporters on the road. It’s Boston, it’s not the western swing. And Cap, if we do this, you absolutely cannot only wear a hat. That’ll just be embarrassing for everyone and ruin the theme completely.” “You’re really selling it, Lucas,” Will said. His bag of ice was taped to his knee, a slight limp to his walk that he’d probably milk until the Christmas break.

“I am fine-tuning your idea, Scarlet. Or at least your idea theft.” “Theft?” Killian repeated and it couldn’t have been good for his neck to keep twisting up towards Emma. Or whatever happened to his entire body when Roland jumped up onto him, knee landing on, what felt like, half a dozen different internal organs.

He was already shouting about Christmas plans and snow and Henry had, finally, retired the original Jones jersey, but had recently started sporting a Stanley Cup champions version that was looking a little worse for wear as well.

“Are you going to get dressed up, Hook?” Roland asked, shouting the question in Killian's ear. “Henry and I are going to!” Killian glanced at the teenager in question, eyebrows lifted and Henry shrugged like it was the end of the goddamn world. “Scarlet thinks it’d be funny. Even if it is kind of unoriginal, but usually you guys don’t do stuff like this.” “I’m still not entirely sure what it is we’re doing,” Emma admitted, gaping at Will when he made some kind of noise in the back of his throat.

“Em, seriously?” he asked. “I told Cap about this, like, two days ago at least. He really didn’t say anything?” Emma shook her head and Will might have actually growled. “C’mon, Cap, what the hell? Sorry Rol. I’m not sorry, Henry though because you insulted my idea.”

“Ok, well, you’re not really making any of us want to do this, Scarlet,” Robin muttered, grabbing a stick out of his locket to hit at the back of Will’s legs.

“I am injured, Locksley!” “You blocked one shot. You’re a defenseman. That is literally your job.”

“I’m going to make you wear the ugliest sweater of all.” Robin brandished the stick again and Killian was never sure who moved first – him or Emma or Ruby, but they were a mess of voices and raised hands and pleas to relax, guys, seriously and both Robin and Will made hand gestures that were decidedly out of place several days before Christmas.

“It is some kind of miracle Gina isn’t here to see that,” Killian muttered, falling back on the bench and, that time, he tugged Emma down with him, a vaguely uncomfortable pretzel that also included Roland Locksley.

“If you tell Gina about that, I will find actual coal and give it to you, Cap,” Robin said. It sounded like a promise.

Or, possibly, a warning.

“Scarlet you want to tell me what your idea is now?” Emma asked, a blatantly obvious attempt to redirect the conversation.

Killian tried to bite back his smile.

It didn’t work.

Ruby rolled her eyes.

“We’re going to dress up,” Scarlet said simply. He nodded once – as if that explained anything – and Emma shrugged again when there weren’t more words. “You know...festive like.” “What?”

Killian made a noise, somewhere between amusement and disbelief that any of them were even considering this ridiculous thought, hooking his chin over Emma’s shoulder. And he didn’t expect Roland to explain it. “The Canadiens did it last year, Emma,” he yelled, leaping off the bench to start bouncing on the balls of his feet instead. “They all got dressed up and they wore funny suits and Santa hats and it was on SportsCenter and all over the internet and now Uncle Will wants to do the same thing here and Henry and I are going to wear hats.” “Bring up that SportsCenter fact again,” Ruby grinned. She leaned forward, wrapping an arm around Roland’s shoulders to tug him against her side and they both looked like they wanted to start bouncing up and down. “This is...it’s a great idea. Don’t say a word, Scarlet.” “I didn’t say anything, Lucas,” Will promised, but the grin on his face looked triumphant and Killian knew he was outnumbered.

“So we’re just going to steal festive-type ideas from the Canadiens now?” he asked. “I feel like we’re better than that.” Will nodded enthusiastically, eyes wide and it was like someone had just turned on an extravagant light display in the middle of the New York Rangers locker room. Everything felt a bit brighter. That was a cliché. “Exactly,” Will shouted. “That’s exactly what I’m saying, Cap. We’ve been officially screwed over by this schedule. Sorry, Rol. So we’re taking back some of the fun of the game. We’re going to look like idiots and the fans are going to love it.”

“I never agreed to look like an idiot,” Robin muttered. “I’ll dress up. I’ll wear a hat to match my kids, but I won’t look like an idiot when Lucas is already plotting some kind of social media strategy for the whole thing.” “How do you know I’m doing that?” Ruby asked and the entire locker room exploded in a general state of hysterics.

“Lucas, please. Don’t insult my intelligence like that.” “You can almost hear the gears moving, Rubes,” Emma added, a smile on her face and her fingers still tracing across Killian’s neck and it felt decidedly festive even if they were all going to look like idiots in Boston.

“Whatever,” Ruby grumbled. “This is good pub. I bet The Post runs a sidebar about it and we all get some positive ink before the break.” “All of those phrases were incredibly old sounding,” Will laughed.

“Locksley, hit Scarlet with that stick again.” Robin hummed, flashing a conspiratorial grin Killian’s direction and Will nearly tripped over his own feet trying to jump back. Ariel looked scandalized when she turned the corner, the heel of her hand pressed into her lower back.

“Are you guys serious?” she yelled and her hair seemed to get redder. Like it was gaining power. Or frustration. Merry Christmas. “Scarlet, sit down. Locksley, put the stick away. We won already. Cap, control your team better.”

“That was good, Red,” Killian grinned. “I feel like I’m about to get grounded.” She stuck her tongue out at him. And he couldn’t turn his laugh into a convincing cough quickly enough. “I will...tell Arthur on you. And pick out a garbage outfit for you to wear in Boston.” “What are you going to say to Arthur? Also have we considered Arthur in this whole dress like a Christmas tree kick we are on, because I can’t imagine a situation where he’s even remotely into any of that.”

“Cap,” Will sighed. “That is not the name. Festive forecheck. You’ve got to go for alliteration. Obviously. Someone back me up on this.” “I mean that’s not bad,” Emma said. “It just doesn’t really make sense. Give me, like, twelve hours to come up with something better.” “Deal. And Arthur thinks it’s a great idea because, surprisingly enough, some kind of win streak makes Arthur an almost bearable human being and front office thought it was genius.”

“No one said that,” Robin mumbled. “The word genius was never used.”

“Anyway,” Will continued sharply, talking louder like that would drown out any festive detractors. “Front office really does think it’s a good idea and in the spirit, that was an actual phrase, right Lucas?” Ruby nodded – even though it looked like it physically pained her to do so. “Right, right, in the spirit and fun and the fans will love it. So, you know... get all the Grinch’ing out now because we’re doing this.” “Can we make Grinch references when there are still a couple of days before Christmas?” Emma asked. “Also is there a dress code? How do you guys pick outfits?” Will’s eyes widened at the barrage of questions, but Killian felt something spark in the center of his being that was oddly similar to several lit fireplaces and hot chocolate and, probably, a bread pudding that was somewhere in the realm of edible.

They were going to the brownstone together again.

And Emma was still asking questions.

They stayed in the locker room for another forty-five minutes and, at some point, Emma actually found a notebook and started writing down rules and festive regulations and Will promised that they could all get outfits within the next forty-eight hours and, two days later, by the time they walked into TD Garden, the New York Rangers entire roster looked as if Christmas had exploded.

But, like, in a good way.

“You know,” Emma said, just inside the doors of the Garden with her own hat on her head because Gina took everything way too seriously. “I think you might just win the best dressed competition, Jones.”

He grinned, any sense of exhaustion from an absurd just-before-Christmas schedule that wasn’t quite over yet disappearing as soon as Emma pressed up on her toes and they should probably stop kissing in arenas.

Killian couldn’t really bring himself to care. There was some Christmas excuse, probably. And he loved his girlfriend a lot.

“Can you vote, love?” he asked, mumbling the words against the curve of her jaw and his heart grew three sizes when she laughed in response. The Grinch looked pretty damn good in his festive suit – even while wearing the single most absurd Christmas sweater he could find.

“That seems like cheating, doesn’t it?” Emma asked. “Do you not trust the fans’ judgement?” “I’m not entirely concerned with that.” “That was almost romantic.” “Almost.” “Win another game and I’ll reconsider.” “No goal?” “Didn’t want to be greedy.” Killian smiled again – what felt like the entire goddamn Yule Log burning in the pit of his stomach and that probably wouldn’t be good once he got on the ice. “A goal and an assist and you walk out of the arena wearing this absurd jacket.” “I think you just want me to wear your jacket,” Emma muttered, tugging on lapels and Killian was surprised the entire thing didn’t rip apart in her hand. The Christmas-patterned jacket, it seemed, was not very well made.

Killian shook his head, hands landing on her hips and they should have found a more private corner. Scarlet was shouting for him. “Putting words in my mouth, Swan,” he muttered. “A goal and an assist, love.”

“And what happens if you don’t actually win the best dressed voting contest?”

“I’ll wear the hat. We’ll just...swap.” “Those are lame stakes.” “Best I can do on short notice.” She laughed and the sound seemed to echo in between his ears and his rib cage and this season was different in all the ways he’d always hoped for. That was almost another cliché. He’d have to tell Mrs. Vankald later that week. “Yeah, ok,” Emma said. “Also. Arthur dressed up.”

Killian gaped at her, eyes wide and jaw hanging open and Will couldn’t seem to stop laughing, even as they walked towards the visitor’s locker room to the sound of shutter snaps and flashes.

“You look good, Cap,” Will grinned. “I mean...not Phillip good. But, you know, festive.” He tried to glare at him. He did, but there was something about the season, Christmas or otherwise, and kissing Emma, even without mistletoe, and he couldn't quite summon up the frustration. He probably wouldn’t even check anyone later. “Yeah and you look ridiculous. I don’t remember that jacket being so….bright.”

“‘Tis the season, Cap.” “I don’t think that’s the phrase you’re looking for. Was it really that bright when we ordered it? Why did you agree to this?”

There wasn’t really time between games to actually shop, but the internet existed – or so Regina was quick to point out when they explained the idea in the restaurant and Eric was only too happy to offer up several plates of food they probably shouldn’t be eating in the middle of the season while she pulled out a tablet and started hitting buttons and it all got fairly ridiculous fairly quickly.

“Whatever, Cap,” Will grumbled, kicking open the door to the locker room. “Lucas told me I’m already winning this best dressed thing we’re staging.”

“We’re a weirdly competitive group, aren’t we?”

“It’s an outlet.”

Killian hummed, shrugging out of his jacket and there were more cameras and Mulan was there and this whole thing was going to end up as a photo gallery on the site and sent to season tickets. “What’d you come up with for your title of you well executed event, Scarlet?”

“Was that a compliment? Also didn’t Emma tell you? It was her idea.” “We’ve got some other things going on,” Killian said evasively, waving his hand through the air when Will narrowed his eyes. “What’s the name?”

You live together.” Killian made a noise in the back of his throat, something he hoped sounded appropriately dismissive and he was fairly certain it didn’t work when he met Robin’s gaze. “Emma thought it’d be a good idea to auction off our jackets and we’re all going to sign the hats and we’re going to make a ton of very festive money for Garden of Dreams. Aurora was thrilled, right Phillip?” “She was,” Phillip nodded. “I think the word overjoyed was used several times.”

Killian nodded, pride joining whatever Yule Log was still burning in the very center of him and he’d probably score two goals that night. “Ah, well, it might not have been a bad idea, Scarlet,” he said, clapping Will on the shoulder and the crowd was louder than usual when they took the ice half an hour later.

They won the game, the lead story on SportsCenter and, per text message updates from David, the top post on the subReddit with some sort of absurd number of comments, and Killian walked out of TD Garden with a Santa hat on his head and a smile on his face and Emma had to push the sleeves of the jacket up to hold his hand.

[MS] Looking for the mystery witness

To start this off: This isn't a true story and the town is fictitious.

I'm Detective Brad Markus and I'm a detective for the Florida Springs Police Department. We are a small Panhandle town in Florida, of course. It's called the forgotten coast of Florida. We like some tourism but not a lot.

Florida Springs has a nice state Park which is Florida Springs State Park which for much of the year is deserted or at least it was back in 1981, especially in December. This was about 17 days before Christmas. I had the day off, so me and my wife Sandy decided to have a picnic lunch. The day wasn't cool it was around 75 degrees. We ate our lunch sitting on a large beach towel which had large starfishes on them. We watched the waves which were very light. The waves in the gulf are very light compared to the Atlantic.

From a distance, I could see Old Man Wilson (this is what he liked to be called) sitting on his beach chair. Usually he would wave to me when I did patrols in the area or came to the beach and today was no exception. He would sit out there all day and sometimes into the evening. He would only leave and walk the short distance to his home when told to leave.

His home was the only one on the beach (once he died the house would be torn down). Old Man Wilson was 80 years old and in good health, so I don't see that happening any time soon. He will live there until the day he dies. Beautiful home.

Me and Sandy stayed till the sun went down. It was starting to get cold and the wind was blowing. It looks like a storm would be coming in and right as we got home, the storm hit. It rained for several hours. By midnight the storm was over and you could see the full moon.

The next morning, the ranger called us and said that he had found a man in the surf face down with a bite mark on his neck. He had a bite on his torso. A capsized boat was seen drifting in the water nearby. This was about a mile from Old Man Wilson's beach house and technically in the jurisdiction of Florida Springs. It was decided that Florida Springs would take over the investigation.

I went to Old Man Wilson's home. His hearing isn't that great and he usually doesn't wear his hearing aids. He wasn't of any help.

The medical examiner called me and said that the man who was identified as 23 year old Mark Marsh was attacked by a shark, most likely from falling out of the boat. He also had been drinking and had been smoking weed. This guy had no family and no one claimed him which was very sad. Old Man Wilson felt sorry for him had paid to have a funeral and a resting place for the man.

February 1982

This you would think would be the end of the story until I got a letter about two months later from someone who claimed that the death wasn't accidental. The letter told what happened but from the evidence that we have, we could neither prove not disprove. The anonymous writer said that they knew the identity of the killers but couldn't come forward.. What was odd is that the letter was sent to me from a post office in Austin Texas. Was this for real or was it a joke.

I know that it wasn't Old Man Wilson who sent the letter because he doesn't have a typewriter and he's deceased. He died a couple of days into the new year. It's been two months since I've received the letter, but I haven't told anyone yet. I mentioned to our local press three months later that we needed additional information regarding the death of Mark Marsh and for someone to please call us. No one did and the case went cold. For some reason I kept this paperwork and took it with me when I retired. Not really supposed to do this but I did.

June 2019 - nearly 40 years after Mark Marsh was found on the beach, I get a call from Debbie Wilson Youngman who is the granddaughter of Old Man Wilson. She has breast cancer and doesn't know how much longer she has to live. She has information about Mr. Marsh. She lives in Pensacola and is in a hospice center there.

Let me give you some information about me. I became Chief of Police in 1987 and retired in 2013. This was after 40 years of law enforcement service. I started out at age 18 in 1973 at a officer for the city and by 1978 I was detective. A lot has changed in Florida Springs. In 1973 it was about 1,500 people and by 2019 it's about 6,000 people. More hotels and condos. They put the condos across the street from the beach. Some of it, I don't like. Sadly shortly after Old Man Wilson died, someone kids vandalized the place and then one of them who was smoking threw the cigarette butt on the floor and the house was destroyed by fire.

So, I'm on my way to see Debbie Youngman. Will be interesting to see what she has to say.

December 1981

Old Man Wilson was surprised to see his granddaughter Debbie Wilson arrived a day early. He had just came back from the beach. Debbie brought some food and made dinner. Debbie was tired. She had flew in from Pensacola and had taken the taxi to the beach house which was 40 miles. They decided to turn it early.

The storms on the beach sometimes unnerved Debbie but Old Man Wilson it didn't bother. By midnight it was gone and a full moon was out. Debra couldn't sleep and went out for a walk. It was 3:00 am. She loved doing this as everything was so quiet. As she came closer to the house, she noticed a group of men hanging around. She hid herself where she could see them but they couldn't see her.

"He doesn't know that we are here. " said one man.

"Hey, let's go in and rob the place." said another man.

Dogs could be heard in the house barking up a storm.

"Don't think so. The Old man has nothing to rob. Leave the man alone. Come on let's get out of here."said a third man.

Two of the men Debbie didn't recognize but the third one she did. She watched as they left her grandfather's house and walked down the beach. She went along a trail where she wouldn't be seen. She was careful not to make any noise.

She saw a man with a boat that was waiting for them. She saw them overpower the man, tied him up and put him in a boat that sped away. She was afraid to go back to the house. In the distance, she could hear screams and then nothing. A short time later, she then saw the men make the boat capsize and then placed the man next to it. They then left by boat. She ran back to the house. Her grandfather was asleep and never knew she had left.

"I know I should have called the police, but I was in shock and was too scared. Ranger Burns found the body a couple of hours later. He came to my grandfather's place and I hid.. My grandfather his memory was very bad forgot that I was there. He didn't of course see anything. I was nervous the whole time I was there.

Debbie took a sip of water and then continued.

"The next day two of the men that I didn't know. came around. I was at the house when I saw them approached grandpa and asked him about Mark Marsh. They didn't see me as I was in the house. I watched very nervously. Ranger Burns walked up to them and asked if they had seen anything. They hadn't of course but I knew they were lying. They quickly left. I never saw them again, although from time to time Mickie Larange would show up in the panhandle but not here. His grandparents have a beach house in community of St. Joe 40 miles away from Florida Springs. He came during the summer. Both his parents and grandparents thought he was a special person who could do no wrong.

I knew who Mickie Larange was. Bad news and a bad person. He was a rock star that was adored nationwide and worldwide. If they only knew, but they didn't and even if they did, well........

"He had people who covered for him big time from the time he was a child till today. He got away with a lot of things, because they weren't violent in nature. Stole things from stores. Wrote bad checks. Tried to get away with not paying restaurant and motel bills. Took a car for a joy ride when he was a teen and got into an accident, totaling the car. Daddy paid the man whose car he wrecked. Broke young girls's and women's hearts. Doesn't pay child support unless he's force to You get the picture. I knew who he was and what he looked like and his reputation but never had any interaction with him, thankfully. "

I nodded. I never had to deal with Mickie Larange as he didn't come around Florida Springs and the State Park but I'd heard about him from other law enforcement agencies that came in contact with him. He was never arrested until two years ago when police arrested him in California for failing to pay child support. My wife remembers how angry he was and how he treated two of his ex-wives. He called one of them a liar and something else I can't repeat and then he spit in the face of the other ex-wife. When his own children said he was a jerk, he said that they were spoiled brats. My wife likes to watch all that on TMZ. Not me, have no interest in it."

"I was the one who wrote the letter back in 1982. I had to tell someone. I never told anyone about this."

We talked a little bit more and then I left. Sadly there isn't much I can do. A couple of weeks later I get a call from one of the men who was there, former body guard. Like Debbie, he's very ill and doesn't have long to live. The third man died 20 years earlier in Prison. He was another body guard.

Two months later Mickie Larange is arrested in California and he denies everything. Later he is put on trial in Pensacola Florida. He tries to blame the other two men saying that they threatened to kill him if he didn't go along with them. It was clearly proven that he was the mastermind behind the crime. The reason was because Mark Marsh was going to write a book about him, detailing what he had done. He couldn't have that and he took action. The jury convicted him. Even though he's in jail he still gets letters, gifts and money from adoring fans.

A sad footnote to this story. Shortly after Mickie Larange was convicted, Debbie Youngman passed away and so did the bodyguard.

‘Why I Shaved Off My Dreadlock Which Brought Me Favours’ – Taribo West Reveals

Footballer turned pastor, Taribo West has revealed why he is the most dreaded soccer star Nigeria has ever produced.

In an interview with Saturday Sun correspondent, Bolaji Okunola, the former AC Milan and Inter Milan defender opens up on the secret behind his hair, his saddest and happiest moments on the field of play.

He also explained how his look and hairstyle resurrected dead bones, his perception about the defensive line up of the current Super Eagles, his prediction for coach Gernot Rohr tutored team ahead of the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nation in Egypt.

Pastor West, founder of Shelter in the Storm Miracle Ministries of All Nation also shared his experience in Europe, how he grew up, surviving as a street boy and lots more.

Most Nigerians believe you became a household name in world football from your background as a street boy, can you tell us your growing up?

I grew up from the streets like any other Nigeria hustler. My growing up was fantastic. I grew up in an environment, where one is made to hustle by himself, vicinity where the local gangs were known as the area boys. It’s either you are with them or against them. And I thought it would be better to have them as friends than enemies. Break-ins, fighting, drugs and muggings were the order of the day. Those were the things I witnessed while growing up. If I continue narrating it, we won’t leave here.

After which I found favour and I was discovered by a soccer agent known as Monday Sinclair, who picked me up from where I was playing streets soccer. He recruited me to play for Sharks FC of Port Harcourt.

Before then, I played for Obanta United. I also played for the likes of Enugu Rangers and Julius Berger before I was flown abroad to play for such clubs like Auxerre FC of France, AC Milan, Inter Milan and host of others. “ Na so I become who I be o.”

It’s been a while you hung your soccer boot, how has life been?

Life has been interesting for my family and I. As you can see, am still looking young and charming. As a matter of fact, with my physique I can still play full duration.  Most times, I do visit the gym for exercise. I even prefer spending my leisure time with young footballers, so as to keep myself fit and healthy.

What have you been missing about the round leather game?

Sincerely speaking, I have missed a lot. Football missed me and I also missed football. I miss it the more whenever I see my colleagues. Seeing them makes me flash back to the old glorious days. How we won and lost tough games and competition. It has not been easy retiring from what you love doing. Most times, when I look at television adverts, which portrays the image of the Super Eagles, I feel like having the players around.

But sadly, we can’t be together again like we used to be. Everyone is now chasing how to put food on the table for their families. All we need do is to keep thanking God for a successful and glorious lifestyle we have spent together.  Left for me, I don’t think I can do something else apart from being involved in soccer.

You played every single minute of the Atlanta ‘96 Olympics tournament, where you won gold and you also achieved same feat during the AFCON 2000 and France 98 FIFA World Cup tournament, what is the secret behind this or is that the coach didn’t love others?

I usually tell people hard work and consistency are secrets behind my success. I don’t believe in other things. Why should I go and beg a coach because I want to feature in a game. It’s not done. Things like that can easily wreck a team. If a player thinks he deserves to play, he should try to prove himself and that’s what I normally do whenever I visit the Eagles camp. I work harder because I don’t want anyone to take my space. Losing a national team shirt is like losing ones life because, if I fumble and others were tested, then I will begin to see myself as a goner. Back then the Super Eagles were filled with a lot of world-class players, who were capable of playing different positions on the field of play.

What are the challenges you passed through while playing for Nigeria?

I passed through a lot of challenges; physically and spiritually. I grew through the ranks; from the Under 17 stage to Under 23 before I finally got an invitation to play for Super Eagles. It was very tough. I usually get prepared whenever we have to play in Lagos. Lagos fans are very daring. You see the fans coming in thousands to watch you train.  That alone is enough to gear you up because you can’t afford to give them poor football display. On match days, you will see the fans coming in with various charms. And I can’t blame them because football has to do with a lot of powers. When there are big events, you look at the stadium; you see fans invoking all kinds of things. Magicians are there waiting for your action. It was fun and I’m proud to be among the living legends of Nigeria soccer.

In your days, you can be easily spotted with your dreadlock, did that help you in anyway. And why did you choose to settle for such hairstyle?

My hairstyle is one of the most precious things I cherished back then. It makes me look more dangerous before my rivals. My hairstyle and my look have killed and resurrected a lot of soccer enthusiasts. Strikers get shocked seeing me standing before them and fans regain happiness when they spot the hair in the line up. You know as a defender, you won’t love deadly strikers to come closer to you because if they do, you are exposing the goalkeeper to danger. So one must be mad at times in order to chase them far away and am happy it favours me, because I have achieved a lot through it.

Why did you shave off the dreadlock since you claimed it favours you?

Person don dey old now. You know there are some certain things one has to let go because of religion, age and some other things. Am now more closer to God and I have my own ministry.

Having played for two Italian giants; Inter and AC Milan, how do you feel achieving this feat?

I felt great having played for such clubs. What else can I say after playing with the likes of George Weah, Delima Ronaldo, Fillipe Inzaghi, Nwankwo Kanu and host of others. The clubs were great during my time with them but in life, change is the most constant thing. There are no longer minors in football. Clubs we rated as minors back then are now having buyers who are ready to change their story.

All Milan need do is to buy more experiences and exposed players who can help them regain their fear factor. The club is lacking its fear factor, once a team lacks that, then trouble looms. But am sure with time, they will overcome it. They are not the only club witnessing that. But sincerely speaking, I still see Inter Milan and AC Milan as two of the best clubs in the world. They have very solid foundations. I will forever remember the year we won the UEFA Europa Cup in 1998 and I see the club adding more to their laurels in years to come.

  1. Where have all the Shayne Gostisbehere points gone? After going pointless in his last five games, he's on pace for just 31 this year. The 25-year-old led all blueliners in power-play points a season ago with 33. This year, he has eight through 45 contests. Ghost has just one power-play point (an assist on January 3) in the last 25 games. This, despite averaging over three minutes of power-play ice each night.

It boggles the mind. At this point, any hopes of a second-half turnaround are likely built on just hope. He’s proven to be an elite producer in two of his four season-long career. Here’s hoping he wakes up soon. (jan9)

  2. Marc-Andre Fleury has been the low-key fantasy pick of the year. The 33-year-old is running away with the wins and shutouts lead and he does it all with a smile on his face. He's an easy guy to root for. (jan9)

Flower leads all goalies with 41 games played (all starts), which would put him on pace for 70 this season. With Vegas likely making the playoffs again, wouldn’t it be wise to rest Fleury more during the second half? Malcolm Subban has played in just eight games this season.

The driving force for goalies managing starts is the team’s starter being fresh for a long playoff run. The last starting goalie to win a Stanley Cup and play over 60 games in the regular season was in fact Fleury, when he led the Penguins to a Stanley Cup in 2008-09 – a full decade ago. So, it’s worth it for teams with Stanley Cup aspirations to manage their starter’s minutes.

Just as we’ve adjusted (lowered) our GAA and SV% expectations for the increase in scoring, we might need to do the same for games played among goalies. In other words, 60 is the new 70. But it could even get to the point where 55 is the new 60. If goaltending starts are spread out more evenly among the starter and backup, then that could decrease the draft-day value of goalies relative to skaters. In other words, no more drafting Martin Brodeur in the first round because he’s a virtual lock for 70 games and 40 wins. (jan12)

  3. Mat Barzal has 19 points in his last 15 games, leaving him just shy of a point-per-game pace on the season. Even with the Islanders’ focus on defense this year, Barzal is shining. He’s already one of the outstanding young stars in the game. It won’t be long until he’s mentioned in the same breath as all the stars in the game, period. (jan11)

  4. Conor Garland has posted 10 points in his last 10 games. Because he’s not on a deep team like Nashville, Conor Garland he has a shot at expediting his production curve. His AHL curve was a slow one, not really showing signs of ‘pop’ until this season, but he’s translating his sudden AHL numbers into decent NHL production.

Garland is no longer the tiny guy that he was as a teenager, as he’s now up to 5-10, so maybe that is contributing to the faster timeline. He’ll always be a little guy in my heart, though. Anyway, Garland is seeing power play time and is playing on a line with Alex Galchenyuk. (jan7)

  5. What a weekend on the west coast for Jake Guentzel. After posting a hat trick on Friday, Guentzel scored another two goals on Saturday, giving him five over back-to-back games. As I mentioned yesterday, Guentzel’s playoff success is now translating to the regular season. His value might take a bit of a hit when Patric Hornqvist returns from his latest concussion but Guentzel looks like he’ll be just fine. (jan13)

  6. Almost no one will confuse Marcus Pettersson with the rookie with the same last name in Vancouver, but at least he’s receiving second-unit power-play time in Pittsburgh (good for something?), while providing the Pens with much-needed help on the defense.

Packaged with vet Tanner Pearson, the young blueliner was the lesser-known player (at least to fantasy owners) in the Penguins’ trade a few weeks ago that sent Daniel Sprong to Anaheim. He has six points in seven games with a plus-8 over that span. (jan12)

  7. Micheal Ferland had a cold November and December (six points in 19 games) after a hot October (11 points in 12 games), but he is starting to heat up again in January (six points in six games). He’s back on the Sebastian Aho–Teuvo Teravainen line, so now would be a great time to add him if someone has dropped him in your league. (jan12)

  8. Rick Nash announced his retirement from the NHL after 15 seasons due to concussion symptoms. Nash was a must-own in all fantasy leagues for a good decade, reaching the 30-goal mark eight times and the 40-goal mark three times. Over his career from 2002-03 until last season, only Alex Ovechkin, Jarome Iginla, and Patrick Marleau had scored more goals than Nash (437). As well, only Ovechkin has taken more shots than Nash (3,624) over that span.

  9. It’s unfortunate that Nash’s name has been added to the growing list of players whose careers have been cut short due to concussion symptoms. There is a lot more awareness of the long-term health effects of concussions than there were when Nash started his career, but I believe that the NHL still has a long way to go in how headshots are addressed. Hopefully this isn’t something that takes a major toll on Nash’s quality of life. (jan12)

  10. Alexandar Georgiev and Henrik Lundqvist have basically been splitting starts (with Lundqvist being pulled twice during that span). I’m not high on Rangers’ goaltending as a whole but Georgiev could be worth a flier if you need goaltending help. Lundqvist, meanwhile, has struggled mightily since the New Year, with a 6.43 GAA and .786 SV% over those three starts. The veteran goalie should be firmly parked on your bench right now. (jan13)

11. Just as a small aside, I find it kind of odd we (fans, writers, media) often talk about Toronto’s impending cap crunch, but not Tampa Bay’s. This is a team with over $73-million in commitments for 2019-20, leaving them with less than $10-million in cap space with Brayden Point to sign. They will also have three regular defensemen coming off the books in need of replacing (a couple will come internally, I’m sure), and new contracts needed for Cedric Paquette and Adam Erne.

Someone needs to go but there are very few players on that team with significant money committed and no form of movement protection, be it full or partial NTC or NMC. It’s basically J.T. Miller, Yanni Gourde, and Nikita Kucherov. Considering Gourde’s new contract hasn’t even started and there’s no way they’d trade Kucherov, it seems Miller is the most likely bet to be traded. But will there be suitors, and will the team have to sweeten the deal? We’ll see. (jan11)

  12. The question, then, is if everything breaks right for Ondrej Kase, what is his upside?

We’re kind of seeing that already this year with 20 points in 27 games — just four power-play points. I wouldn’t expect Kase to spend much time on the top power play unit, especially with Rickard Rakell back in the lineup, and definitely when Corey Perry eventually returns.

As for his upside, under the assumption he’s not seeing prime PP minutes anytime soon, I would look to Jason Zucker’s 2017-18 season. The latter finished the campaign with 33 goals and 31 assists, with just 16 of those points coming on the PP. He was playing a little bit more per game than Kase is right now by about a minute, but I think it’s an apt comparison.

A very talented scoring winger (though Kase is good defensively, as well) that can land a lot of shots on goal, leading to 25, 30 goals or more. (jan10)

  13. Captain Sidney Crosby has been on quite the roll of late. He has 23 points in his last 15 games and is on pace for his best season since the concussion-shortened 2012-13 campaign, where he recorded 56 points in 36 games. 31-year-old Sid is feeling it. (jan9)

We haven't seen a player click along at this pace since Jaromir Jagr posted 70 in 38 outings back in 1999-00. If the talented Russian maintains his pace, he'll finish the season with 137 points. We haven't had a player break 130 since the mid-90s when Mario Lemieux and Jagr were running roughshod.     

Kuch is right there with Connor McDavid as the best fantasy asset in the world. (jan9)

  15. I’m still bullish on Robby Fabbri’s future; we’ve seen him be very good in long stretches before. But it seems like the plug can be pulled on his 2018-19 fantasy relevance. Maybe he needs a full year to really get his legs back under him after all the injuries. (jan8)

  16. Hello, Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter. Nice to see you again. The two goals that Kopitar scored on Saturday represented his first multi-point game in over a month. However, Kopitar has been remarkably consistent recently, scoring nine points over his past 10 games. He shouldn’t have been expected to repeat his 90-plus points from last season, but you should be able to acquire him for a fraction of his usual cost.

Carter, meanwhile, scored a goal and added two assists, but you probably can’t be blamed for missing out. Carter entered this game with just six points in his last 19 games. Carter’s season shooting percentage of 8.1 percent is well down from his 12 percent career average, so he could also be due for a market correction in the second half. (jan13)

  18. Erik Gustafsson now has 22 points in his last 23 games. I still have some fears that he could eventually lose his plum PP spot to one of the incredible kids who are on the way, though (i.e. Henrik Jokiharju, but there are a couple of others such as Adam Boqvist, Ian Mitchell, Chad Krys).   19. Rocco Grimaldi is not in the NHL for good, no way I would put a single cent on that…but I like the small, skilled guys and I always preach that they take longer than regular players. He’s still not playing with anyone decent and he’s still getting zero for PP time. But for the first time in three years, he has caught my attention. (jan7)

  20. Senators’ highly-touted prospect goaltender Filip Gustavsson is trying to get things figured out at the AHL level, and with Marcus Hogberg up in the NHL, he’s getting in plenty of game action. I still believe in Gustavsson but the wait is going to be a couple of years longer than I had originally thought. (jan7)
