Wrath of Persephone by A. P. Mobley - Review
thanks to @gabrielleragusi for the arc! check this awesome cover she did!
Tumblr media
read: oct 2022
rating: 3 stars
summary:
a retelling of the tale of persephone, focusing on the darker aspects of the story and linking in to the wider universe of the war on the gods by the same author.
opinion:
okay, upfront, i have not read any other work by this author. i suspect that would have been helpful when characters from that series got a brief mention, but this is also a standalone and pretty much self-contained.
i would also highly recommend checking out the content warnings, given that this is a retelling of persephone. i'll put them (verbatim from the book itself) under the cut.
the book is fine? honestly i feel a little old for this. i like the concept, of what if persephone had suffered more, had not had a support network, had grown into her new name, etc. i want that story!
i just feel like i would have enjoyed this more if i was in my teens.
the characters feel somewhat childish, no matter their age, tho i think that might be the YA style creeping through rather than anything else. even after the long time skip, no one really feels any different, despite the fact that they were very much "youths" at the beginning.
some of the writing is also a bit off, with the most persistent example being a lily being described as a bauble? which i get, it became a hair decoration, but it was a strange word choice to me? especially to consistently use for a flower, even after the flower changes into some jewellery. minor personal preference issue? yeah, probably, but it still took me out of the scene and made persephone seem like she was being more dismissive of something she supposedly loved than i think she was supposed to be.
some of my lack of enjoyment may be that this story just wasn't for me. i'm the kind of person who looks out for the best in people, rather than the worst, and i struggled to find the logic in *all* the gods being so dismissive and oblivious of persephone. (there's a zeus tyrant argument to be made here, but i think i would need more context to be comfortable pinning their actions on that.)
to be clear, persephone is an interesting character, and i enjoyed seeing her dynamic with demeter, and the change from her doe-eyed younger self to her bitter, traumatised older one was interesting.
i just...
ultimately it's a story about powerlessness and what that can do to a person, and maybe i simply wasn't in the right place for that.
i'm open to reading the first book of the series, to see if that sheds more light on the characters who appear here and where persephone ends up.
if you love greek myth and are in the market for a nice short read, give it a try. if you're not sure, check out the content warnings below.
(copied from the author's note in the start of the book. bolded words are my own addition)
In my interpretation of Persephone’s story, she is not a willing participant in her abduction and consequent marriage. However, while I show her kidnapping, the assault that follows is only alluded to.
Furthermore, “Wrath of Persephone” includes violence, abuse, victim blaming, infidelity, rude language, themes of hopelessness and of one’s agency being stolen, and a plot where the titular character falls to the “dark side” because of her hate for those who have hurt her. If you are sensitive to any of this type of content, please keep that in mind before reading on, because I would never want to hurt or upset anyone with my writing.

Jenna Moonlight Dating Sim walkthroughs
If you’re interested in the history of amateur flash otome games or wants to have a small nostalgia trip, you may watch Jenna Moonlight Dating Sim walkthrough videos I’ve uploaded on YT today. I decided to record only the good endings.
I wasn’t into this type of games, when it came out, but apparently it was quite original among other amateur otome games at the time it was released, due to being a postapo horror story instead of an another romantic comedy.
The creator wrote in 2007:
“Bomee's last dating sim for the 2007 year, completely drawn with a mouse, with backgrounds from real pictures taken by my sister in Montreal Canada. You play as Jenna Moonlight for an unlimited amount of time as the war between the living and those infected by the Blood Pond Ensue. The Blood Prince is the son of Fantom and Ari from Love Dating Sim 1, taken away from the lovers by the Jealous Blood Pond Craven. Those with Vampric blood are not affected by the fumes from the Pond. Those affected become vampires like Stas. And those with witch blood like Jenna mixed with Vampric blood are very powerful-- you as Jenna can choose to destroy the world or save it... with eight different endings and five original characters...
This may be a very simple dating sim, but it's like no other with an original storyline and hentai-less graphics/gameplay. Is it love or lust at first bite? You decide.“
The original is still playable here.
The love interests:
1. Annej - the only female LI. This poor girl tormented by self-hatred is not an actual human being - she’s Jenna’s shadow and was created to become the Blood Prince’s bride. She ran away to the last existing city in the world and now she’s a clerk in the local shop. And she’s very happy, when you drink her blood ;P
youtube
2. Mobley - the scientist and Jenna’s supportive friend. At the beginning he gives you your first mission and you may accept it or deny it. No matter what will be your choice, you still may date him in the end. Poor guy doesn’t like, when you drink his blood, and unfortunately for him he doesn’t fight back.
youtube
3. Logan - the distrustful hunter that Mobley wants you to find. This guy may train you (which is a must, if you want to kill the Blood Prince or Stas), even if initially he claims he doesn’t want to. He doesn’t get along with Mobley and finds him to be an annoying weakling (although he admits he’s very intelligent). He doesn’t like, when you drink his blood, but unfortunately for you he fights back, when you cross the line ;P
youtube
4. Stas - my personal favorite (and maybe a fellow Slav?). Poor guy was turned into a vampire and despite not wanting to do so, now he preys on people, who had misfortune of coming near him. Luckily for you, he immediately falls in love with you and is not able to kill you even when you try to kill him.
youtube
5. The Blood Prince - the main villain of the game and the master manipulator, who finds you interesting for some reason. Any why the hell his runaway bride is your shadow created specifically for the purpose of marrying him? You may become his Blood Princess and then rule the world together as the ultimate villainous power couple,

Movie celebrates Emmett Till as beloved Black boy before lynching
November 5, 2022
The life of Emmett Till ended with a lie.
There have been discrepancies over the decades about what was alleged to have transpired that fateful day in Chicago, Illinois, when a 14-year-old Black boy crossed paths with a white woman. He whistled at her; he said something slick at her; he assaulted her.
But at the end of the day, it was all a lie. Even before the damning revelation directly from Carolyn Bryant — the white woman in question — would come out about her recanting her allegations while noting that there was "nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him," it was always a lie.
There's always been something painfully unremarkable about Till's death that's informed Black people's intuition on the truth of the matter. How many Black boys before and since his murder have we heard of losing their own life after being caught on the wrong side of a white woman's tears? His death and the depraved, perverse pleasure the men who carried out his killing took into maiming Till's body, and their inevitable acquittal read like a retread of current events.
So what was it about Till's death that nearly 70 years after his murder, his name still conjures strong emotions? Accounts of his murder are passed down to each generation of Black children like a dark inheritance. (I myself was just 13 when I was first told this horror story.) Much like the many Black boys who have been robbed of their lives by white supremacy, power has been posthumously given to Till. His spirit has been exhumed and restored to a state of cultural immortality.
Mamie Till-Mobley, portrayed by Danielle Deadwyler, insisted on an open casket for her murdered son's funeral so people could see what 14-year-old Emmett looked like after being tortured and lynched. (Lynsey Weatherspoon/Orion Pictures)
The recently released film "Till" is the latest in the excavation of the late teen's life, this time from the perspective of his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley (Danielle Deadwyler). who dedicated her life to activism after her son's death. Mamie famously insisted on having an open casket funeral, forcing the world to see what it had done to her son.
"Till" follows Mamie's turn to activism. The role of the mother in the movement has become a vital figure within the post-Black Lives Matter era, as the mothers of state violence victims turn their grief into a journey of being coerced into mining their children's death for moral importance. Mamie's actions, however, were unprecedented.
The film does its best to capture the weight of Mamie's decision, focusing less on the brutality and gore of the events that transpired and more on Mamie's life following the tragic events. There's been continued discourse on the responsibility of artists when depicting the horrors of white supremacy and the line between telling the truth and overindulging in showing the blood and the guts of racism. The recent Netflix series "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer story", which depicts the crimes of the infamous serial killer that disproportionately targeted queer Black and brown men, has been heavily criticized with even members of some of the victims' family condemning the series for its glorification of Dahmer.
Broad resistance to depictions of the brutality of white supremacy in the name of Black joy, flattens Blackness in the same way many critics have said endless portrayals of violence does.
Even in our efforts to keep Till's memory alive, we often render him into a mere symbol — static, permanently fixed as inanimate in our collective memory. Till's name has been invoked often as a rhetorical device, used euphemistically to talk about Black boys who have been caught on the wrong side of a white woman's tears. His lynching has been creditedwith kickstarting what would become the civil rights movement.
Mamie's decision to have an open casket was a reminder to the world that there was a life that used to animate her son's body. Before his head had been beaten and swollen beyond recognition, there was a shy boyish smile that used to stretch across Till's face. He was a 14-year-old who loved and was loved. Emmett was no martyr. He was Mamie's son.

Arthur Blakey (October 11, 1919 – October 16, 1990) was a jazz drummer and bandleader. He was briefly known as Abdullah Ibn Buhaina after he converted to Islam for a short time in the late 1940s. He made a name for himself in the 1940s in the big bands of Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine. He then worked with bebop musicians Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie. In the mid-1950s, Horace Silver formed the Jazz Messengers, a group that the drummer was associated with for the next 35 years. The group was formed as a collective of contemporaries, but over the years the band became known as an incubator for young talent, including Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean, Johnny Griffin, Curtis Fuller, Chuck Mangione, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Cedar Walton, Woody Shaw, Terence Blanchard, and Wynton Marsalis. The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz calls the Jazz Messengers "the archetypal hard bop group of the late 50s". He was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame, and the Grammy Hall of Fame, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CjkiRLYrLxK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The 3rd Annual Morgan County Veterans Creative Arts was a success! Several Bloomington artists joined Martinsville creative spirits at the Art Sanctuary to display their hard-work! It was a site to see as Veterans and artists bonded together over their service to country and their love to create! We also had 2 youth display extraordinary pieces exhibiting talent, but also providing honor to the Veterans they are related to! American Legion Auxiliary Unit 18 Bloomington was blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of a tradition that American Legion Auxiliary Unit 230 Martinsville created a few years back! it was neat to see several different. American Legion entities collaborating together to ensure our veterans were able to participate in an event that provided an outlet for their talents and allow them an opportunity to express themselves. Multimedia Journal #2
The subjects of the film The Help, are Skeeter, Abilene, and Minny. Skeeter is a young woman who returned home from college with passion of becoming a writer. She decides to interview the maids Abilene and Minny who are maids for wealthy white families. She uses these interviews to write a book documenting the intimate details of their lives as not only maids but secondary mothers to many young children. The film takes place in Mississippi during the year of 1963 which is during the time of the Civil Rights Movement in the US. Though most of the maids and caretakers of children were African-American, there was still a certain attitude against Black Americans by White Americans at the time. One of the more notable components of the film is the prohibition of Minny using a bathroom in the house which she tends to. This is because her employer is essentially disgusted by the thought of using the same bathroom as a colored person. This is hypocritical considering that she has been responsible for cleaning up her home and most likely touching everything. The scene in which she pretends to use the bathroom, she infuriates her employer simply by allowing her to think that she used the bathroom https://youtu.be/EVmiybhg3P8?si=0TLAMcl7Z1BLeuB6
Tumblr media
The connection to our class and what we’ve been learning about is the topic of race and how that plays a role in our everyday lives. In this instance, in 1963 everything was impacted and influenced by race. Therefore, there were communities within the film such as the maids who lived next to one another. For the most part they lived the same lives of being a maid, looking after the children of their employers, and coming home to live their personal lives. This is similar to the communities that we talked about recently in our class like Godzilla the Asian American Arts Network. Godzilla was an outlet for Asian American artists to network with one another and highlight their art pieces. More than this, it was a community that supported each other to create a space for the art they produced to be praised like every other racial/ethnic group. For marginalized groups having a community is crucial, especially if these groups face discrimination, hardships, and other dilemmas due to their race. This arts network symbolizes solidarity within the Asian American art scene, likewise, the maid community in the film supports one another deeply because of their shared experiences. These are the experiences that take the focus of the book written by Skeeter. Without her book most of these experiences are just whispered about but once published they were able to be read by all kinds of people who never knew about what these maids dealt with.
