#a miserable artist will create rarely ans scarcely and that's the reality

The truth is, some of us genuinely would be much happier if we could make a living out of our art.
Having an after-work hobby is great, truly, but not nearly enough for some of us. I see posts about how it's ok to create just for the sake of the pleasure and satisfaction it brings, and that's good, that's true, but it's not dirty and fake to want recognition either. It's ok to want to make art for a living. Everyone is constantly scaring us by saying 'don't do what you love as a job, because you'll start hating it'. Is it better to do a job you feel, at best, lukewarm about, and at worst actively hate already? Where would all your favourite musicians be if they listened to that advice? Some of us are meant to make art, not be an accountant, doctor or a bricklayer. Just like with cooking, there are those who cook for their family and like it, but there are also those who become chefs, because it could never be just that for them, even if they still enjoy seeing their family eat their food.
I just think wanting to be an artist full time shouldn't be treated like something unreasonable, when historically, it was a fully viable option for so long.
#quite a personal rant#but also might resonate with some people#art#artists on tumblr#listen year art is spiritual and shit. but it's also a craft. an actual craft you need skills for#in the mids of trying to make people aware of the spiritual meaning of art we completely forgot of a simple truth:#artists need to eat too#and pay rent#yes we will make art no matter what but the quality will be different#a miserable artist will create rarely ans scarcely and that's the reality#you want art? PAY THE ARTISTS#there's a whole discussion about AI meant to replace 'expensive' skilled workers and purposeful devaluation of an artists job in there too#but ironically I have work at my office job to do : )
