Shatter the illusion

Egotober day 9: Shatter

Jackie’s trembling hands gripped the ceramic green counter, a desperate attempt to keep himself from collapsing onto the hardwood floor. Small drops of water mixed with sweat dripped down his face down his neck. The sound of a running faucet filled the empty bathroom air. Bile crept up Jackie’s throat, burning his heart.

This was pathetic. It was a stupid dream. He was getting all worked up over something that wasn’t real. Flashbacks of needles and mysterious liquids, things that only existed in the past. Things that only existed in dreams. It can’t hurt him anymore. Nothing could hurt him.

Jackie took in a deep breath, forcing his eyes to look up at the mirror. Hollow broken eyes stared back at him. Blood flowing from their temples streamed down their face, dripping off his chin. Deep brown matted hair framed their sunken face. Their skin was so pale it was nearly translucent. And while they had an athletic build, their body looked like they barely got fed in weeks.

Jackie's body heaved, half-digested dinner came charging back up his throat. The porcelain tile cracked underneath his grip. Jackie’s fist glowed a blinding neon blue as he shattered the mirror in front of him. Little shards of glass dug into his knuckles as he continued to destroy the reflection of his past self. Red, crimson blood poured down his hands making the small bathroom smell like iron.

Jackie’s chest rose and fell in rapid succession as he pushed himself as far as he could into the corner of the room. He wrapped his arms around himself in a hopeless attempt to silence his screaming head. His knees pressed against his abdomen, protecting all the fragile organs inside.

Jackie’s head throbbed as his surroundings warped. The once colorful bathroom turned into a sickening sterile white. Jackie squeezed his eyes tight as he mumbled a helpless string of curses and prayers. He could practically hear the sirens blasting in his ears, alerting the guards of his destructive behavior.

“I’m not back there. I’m not back in I.R.I.S.” His helpless voice tried to soothe himself. Distressed words trying to weave a comforting sentence to bring him back to reality. Back to the small apartment where he and Marvin escaped too. Back to Chase’s smile and stupid remarks. To Henrik’s weird but delicious food. But it was all in vain. There was no escaping I.R.I.S.

Heavy footsteps of the masked guards approached the bathroom door. Jackie’s hands flew up to his ears in a feeble attempt to block out the world around him. His eyes squeezed tight as he braced for the full wrath of I.R.I.S. to hit him. What would it be this time? A sedative that burned like fire? Electric shocks that stung his brain? A million kicks as everyone screamed how useless he was? Maybe I.R.I.S would have mercy on him and finally terminate the project altogether.

“Jackie?” Door hinges creaked open, as someone stepped into the room. “Jackie? I heard something break and I- Oh shit.” Jackie flinched as soft hands ran through his hair. Warm green magic surrounded his fuzzy head. “Jackie, hey, it’s Marvin. It’s okay.”

The warmth of Marvin’s laugh filled the air, as Jackie’s eyes cracked open. The illusion of the I.R.I.S. room melted away as Marvin’s magic filled the air. His eyes darted around trying to familiarize himself with his surroundings. The colorful shower curtain covered with abstract cats strewn across the floor. Shattered glass scattered all over the room. And damaged countertops with indentations of Jackie’s fingerprints. He was home.

“It’s okay. It’s okay.” Marvin hummed as Jackie threw himself into the warm familiar arms of his twin. “We’re gone. We’re out. Okay? They won't get us here. No more tests, no more possession, no more shocks okay?”

Jackie nodded into the magician's chest, trying to keep himself in the moment. I.R.I.S. was in a different country, a different content. There was an ocean between them and the evil scientists that created them. There was no way they could find them now. It would be a complete waste of time and resources. Even if they did pour 7 billion dollars into them.

“Let’s get you back to bed, okay? It’s late.” Jackie nodded as he pushed himself off the floor. He clung to Marvin’s arm, burying his head deep into his brother's shoulder. His stomach churned with shame at such an embarrassing display. He should be out helping people like he was created to do, not having meltdowns in the bathroom like an angsty teenager. How pathetic could he possibly be?

Jackie groaned as he flopped back onto his sweat-soaked mattress. He stared up at the ceiling covered in glow-in-the-dark stars. He let out a small breath as Marvin gently rubbed his arm. Marvin was far too gentle with him. He should be yelling and screaming about how worthless he is. How is he wasting his time and energy with emotions he shouldn’t even have. But he never did. He just smiled and whispered gentle words filled with kindness.

“You-you can go. I don’t need help. I can take care of myself.” Jackie mumbled, breaking the fragile silence.

“Not gonna happen, Jackie,” Marvin whispered as he laid down next to him, their two bodies fitting together like puzzle pieces. Jackie’s fingers intertwined with Marvin’s cotton blue sleep shirt, pulling him closer. “Not gonna happen.”

Jackie closed his eyes and enjoyed the silence that his little brother brought with him. His mind concentrating on Marvin’s hand rhythmically moving up and down, up and down, on his back. Jackie’s body fully relaxed as the smell of incense and flowers finally hit him. He was home. Marvin was here. And nothing was going to hurt him. Not again.

A closet is always welcome, right? I think we can’t ever have enough closets in a house, (Is that a sign I should start decluttering? :)) and having a closet in a Mudroom allows you to keep all of the heavy winter jackets close by!

The mudroom locker is custom and it features a built-in bench with large drawers for storage.

Mudroom seat is made out of White Oak with clear coat. I am loving the combination of black cabinetry with the light Oak. Wicker baskets on upper cubbies complete the look.
