The stretched ring around the head almost trembles like it wants to keep the baby in. I can't tell if our baby is no little one or if this is just an aspect of your very first birth. I place my hands on either side and gently push at the skin, hoping to coax out the head. You yelp when my hands touch the sensitive bulge. The head shifts forward, your face turns red with effort, your mouth widens and your head rolls back. My shoulders twinge with pain as your grip strengthens.
With our combined efforts, the head pops out into my hands. Your body recoils at the release but you hardly register it. Your focus instantly shifted to the next trial. The shoulders.
"Ive got the head, babe, you're doing so good. So, so good," I say into your ear.
You put all of your waning strength into your pushes, but it was only making the shoulders only peek through your opening. But then I notice why.
Your belly looks relaxed, yet you're still pushing. You will exhaust yourself before the shoulders could even present themselves.
"Babe, stop pushing! There isn't a contraction!" I yell.
You don't- you can't listen to me anymore. The instinct and desperation has taken you completely. The shoulders begin to slip back despite your efforts. Your body heaves and your eyes fill with tired panic.
"I can't do it any more! Pull them out!" You shriek.
I don't hesitate. The thumps of feet echo at either side of the corridor. I put my fingers gently around our baby and pull on your next contraction.
Part I Part II Part III Part IV
I close my eyes as I wait for the next contraction, hips shifting slightly left to right against the uncomfortable mass of a half-born babe between my legs. My breath shakes as I inhale through my nose and exhale through pouted lips. I feel trapped in limbo, the relief of having birthed the large head but the dread of birthing the rest of the baby hung over me like a cloud.
“Mmmmmnnnnnh….. mnnnnhhhhh…” I hum into your ear as we wait. I vaguely register the sounds of footsteps approaching but my senses were consumed with my labour and birth.
“No…. No no no…. Don’t…” I muttered and smacked away your hand that had started to ease the baby out. “Don’t pull… hoooo hoooo…”
“Is everything alr- Oh my God!”
Opening my eyes briefly I saw the shocked faces of the air stewards from our flight. Their mouths agape at seeing us on our knees in the middle of the corridor, my shorts pulled to the floor and a baby’s head hanging between my thighs.
“Call an ambulance… get a medical team here now!” One steward shouted at their group.
“Ohhhhhh contraction… hoooo here it comes… baby’s coming-mnghhhhhhh!!!!!” I beared down hard, holding onto your shoulders and lowering my hips to the ground to open my pelvis.
“Push darling push, I’ve got them!” You cheered with encouragement but pulled the baby slightly and I twitched away.
“Don’t… just just catch… mnnnghhh!”
The wide shoulders pushed against my sore lips and stretched them open again, I grunted and growled through the burning pain and felt the shoulders slip through.
“Aghhhhh baby come out…” I groaned and with a final grunt our son flew into your waiting hands with a rush of fluid.
Tears were in your eyes as you lifted our baby and placed him on my chest.
“Here.” Came a voice beside us, the pilot of our plane handed us his jacket to wrap the baby in.

DOUGLAS: Could you, for instance, get a hundred otters on board Gerti?
MARTIN: Yes, I reckon you could.
DOUGLAS: And is it a jam-packed RSPCA-nightmare of a plane, or are the otters lounging in relative comfort?
MARTIN: Well, OK, there’s, er, there’s sixteen seats, so, say, two to a seat.
DOUGLAS: They’re good friends, these otters?
MARTIN: Let’s hope so. Then one in each overhead compartment ...
DOUGLAS: Always remembering to open them with care because otters may have shifted during the flight.
ARTHUR: And, er, one under each seat?
DOUGLAS: Yes! Good thinking.
MARTIN: But that’s where the lifejackets are.
DOUGLAS: That’s all right – otters can swim.
