Balancing Modern Minimalism In Black And White

The black and white decor palette works wonders in a modern minimalist pad. The weight of dark accents effectively anchors lighter parts, to achieve a sense of permanence and balance. This is an important aspect when fashioning a layout that goes lightly on furniture and accessories, as each significance becomes key. We’ve put together this trio of tours that explore the black and white minimalist vibe in different home settings, since one size does not fit all. Join us for a visit to an angular family home with a corridor-like living room, a stylish pad for a bachelor with a love of Marvel, and a luxury abode polished with expanses of white marble.

This corridor-like black and white living room has a succinct sense of style, with each simple element taking up just a small beat of the overall layout. A slimline rectangle coffee table puts a sharp dash of white across a plain black sofa. A black pendant shade snappily punctuates a white dining area.
The kitchen itself is a short four base unit installation, which runs right up beside the TV wall of the lounge.
Wall cabinets break out of the kitchen and complete the entire width of the room. Similarly, the white tile kitchen backsplash becomes decor for the TV wall too. The light units and tiling fade behind the balance of a bold black oven and black TV screen.
The striking dining pendant light is a Moooi Random pendant light. Its oversized shade adds a black pitstop to the upper half of the scheme. Around the base of the room, a border of slatted panels looks pinstriped by light and shade. The doorway to the master bedroom has been painted solid black, to visually deepen the length of the short hallway.
Despite the pendant light’s great size, its mesh shade allows daylight to move through it to the back of the long room.
Lighting strips are loaded into black tracks along the ceiling of the hallway, creating a slick border. White interior doors and white storage fall away along the sides.
The black and white bedroom is a dreamy scene. A black feature wall drops a blanket of midnight behind a full ‘moon’ of light. Whilst the bedroom pendant light shines down on an artistic display, the bedside table lamp on the opposite side of the platform bed illuminates a handy nightstand.
A night scene is depicted more literally above the kids’ bed, where the chalk outline of aircraft and hot air balloons fly across a city of stars.
A kid’s study area is fashioned in the corner of the irregular shaped bedroom. Black and white volumes create such depth of contrast that the obscure angle of the window almost does not register.
The floor plan illustrates the irregular angles tackled in both bedrooms.

This apartment was designed for a young guy with a love of monochrome and Marvel. In order to introduce this passion into the interior without disrupting the monochrome magic, the posters were reprinted in a gradient of grey. The interior itself is masculine without extra frills. The lounge arrangement is simply a chaise sofa and a black floor lamp, though a black accent wall gives the small space big impact.
A cat bed scoots out from under a wall mounted media cabinet. A note of loft style comes through in the form of an original brickwork wall, which has been painted jet black. This is a dividing wall between the living room-kitchen combo and a bedroom.
A dining peninsula makes more of the small L-shaped kitchen installation. A black backsplash dramatises the cabinets white colourway.
Wood laminate flooring warms up the black and white decor scheme.
The wood laminate planks end at the home entryway, where they are replaced by hard wearing black tile. The darker floor treatment defines the entryway as its own area. A full length mirror with a handy shelf further establishes the change of zone.
Solid black blanks out the bedroom door opposite the entry.
A black pouf stands by a set of grey storage cabinets and a coat nook.
An enclosed balcony becomes a reading nook with a few slick additions. A platform with storage drawers elevates a small side table and beanbag to window viewing height. A bar with stools accesses the remainder of the panorama.
In the bedroom, a large wall light beams from a ribbed black headboard wall. The texture and colour density distracts the eye from a wall of white storage.

Two Neoclassical Home Interiors In Shades Of Grey
We’ve coupled together two sophisticated home interiors that illustrate how grey decor melds beautifully with the neoclassical style. The first is a chic and sleek, modern meets classic affair. Wall panel molding has been added into the surroundings to trim and accentuate some more contemporary pieces. Gold and copper trims and accessories add shine and glamour to the finish. Home tour number two offers up a more maximalist approach, with plentiful furniture designs, and home style ideas galore. This plethora of beautiful things is set against a wonderful backdrop of traditional ceiling coving, highly decorative boiserie and smart wainscotting.

The seating stretches out in a sleek line along a light herringbone floor. It divides the common living space into two, with one half playing host to the comfortable lounge area and the other reserved for a chic kitchen dining combo.
The modern sofa provides seating in every direction, meaning family and friends can choose to focus their attention into the kitchen area whilst still relaxing back on the couch. The walls of the open plan living space sport traditional style panel molding, painted with a whisper of grey. One especially large section of panel molding frames the flat screen tv.
A small side table, with a flashy copper trim, showcases a designer table lamp.
In the kitchen diner, a gold sputnik chandelier shines above the eating area. Gold frame dining chairs match the light installation.
Cut logs nestle within a recessed column, creating an attractive feature by a modern fireplace that is stylishly amalgamated into the wall panel.
The black dining table merges with the kitchen island, which forms its other support leg.
Stark contrast is made between white and charcoal elements in the room. Metallic accents sing against the darkest shades.
King of the bedroom decor scheme is a lion art print, which dominates a grey wainscot wall. White bedside table lamps stand out against the grey; these are the Atollo lamp. Cheaper replicas are available on Ebay.
A neoclassical bedroom chair duo stand by the window. A trio of pearlescent side tables push up between them like dewy toadstools.
Semi translucent closet doors allow a subtle reveal of the wardrobe contents inside. A flat screen tv has been mounted onto one half of the closet to align the screen at the optimum viewing angle from the bed. A large tinted glass vase sprouts a dried floral arrangement at its side.
Concrete ceiling tiles counteract the smooth and sophisticated neoclassical wall decor with a touch of industrial grit.
A double sink bathroom vanity is underlit to give it a weightless effect.
Illuminated vanity mirrors echo the floating effect of the wall unit.
A modern grey bidet and toilet set have a sharp square silhouette.
In the hallway, a coat hanging nook has been picked out in charcoal paint.

A unique modern chandelier hangs above the nesting coffee tables, echoing the round shape of the tallest.
A sofa unit spans the back of the light grey couch; its white top matches the crisp white walls in the room, whilst dark wood effect doors give the piece some visual weight.
The sofa also has integrated bookshelves along one side of it. An individual bookcase climbs the wall on the other side of the room, and more shelves span the top of the tv wall.
Deeply decorative boiserie swags across the window wall. Gold and glass orb dining pendant lights gleam over a table behind the lounge.
A low level media unit underlines the wall mounted tv.
Crystal paperweights decorate one of the coffee tables, cut like giant diamonds.

Mandi’s Fireplace and Media Center Makeover
Last June, I moved into a basic suburban home straight out of your favorite ’80s teen movie in every way. Okay, so someone did us the favor of removing tired wallpaper and painting everything tan and brown. But we loved how much the peculiar floor plan exactly fit our particular needs, and I was really taken with this grand living room. It didn’t exactly look like a grand space when we moved in, but I saw its potential for the fireplace of my dreams, and was enamored with the tall ceilings complete with skylights and weird sofit-clad nooks on the walls. (You can see the plan of our first floor in this blog post.)
The living room has finally undergone its transformation, and I’m so excited to share the process with you! We now have a bright space with a beautiful stone fireplace that accentuates the high ceilings. Below the fireplace is a long hearth, worthy of any mid-century masterpiece, but still fitting in with our ’80s home. We aren’t shy about the fact that we watch TV, and I decided to show it in all its glory, since this is the family room in our home and hey, our family likes movie nights, and sometimes movie days!
When I first drew out the plans for the fireplace wall makeover, I had planned to build shelves above the TV, as well as the shelf you can see below it. I wanted to wait until our TV was installed to see how the space would feel, and was surprised that I felt it was perfect without shelves above the TV. Maybe that will change someday, but we are building a shelving wall in our study, so I can’t imagine that we would need any more book storage. I do like how minimal it feels, allowing other areas of the room to shine, like the gorgeous stone fireplace!
From the moment I first saw this space, I knew it needed a stone fireplace that went all the way up to the ceiling. Since there was already brick in place, we opted to use a stone veneer, rather than demo the brick or waste square footage by using large stones. In fact, after doing quite a bit of research, I settled on using manufactured stone, called Cultured Stone by Boral. It looks like real stone, but it is 1/4 of the weight of full-thickness stone, and since it is a veneer, it is not as thick either. You can purchase corner pieces to achieve the look of a thick fireplace, but since our plan was to do some drywall work next to the stone, we didn’t end up using corner pieces. I selected the Old Country Fieldstone in the Summit Peak colorway, and used a sanded grout with a wide mortar set. I was thinking I’d like to use an overgrout style, but my husband vetoed me and we met halfway. Check out the dramatic before and after below!
Above is a cellphone picture of me in my excitement after the first day of Boral stone installation. I had considered doing this project myself, and know that I could’ve (hear me roar). But since we were taking on so much work elsewhere in our home, I decided to hire someone to do the work, and I’m so glad we did! My friend Jeremy Miller did a great job. He added a moisture barrier and metal lathe to the drywall section of the wall above the old brick fireplace, and then covered everything with a coat of mortar. It took him two days to place the stone and fill it in with sanded grout. We chose a white grout, which when mixed with the sand makes an off-white color. I liked the contrast and also wanted it to tie in with the hearth and walls around it.
But let’s take a step back to when we first got the keys to our house! I had made all of the plans for the space while waiting for our mortgage to close, so I confidently began demo in the living room on the very first day of homeownership! Out came the carpet and baseboards, down came the mantle, and out came the old cabinets. I had originally planned to remove the platform inside of this media center nook, but when I pulled up the carpet, I saw that the platform beneath was actually the subfloor that went under the walls, not a platform that was built onto the subfloor. Then I pulled up the subfloor to discover plumbing pipes, electrical conduits, and vacuflo tubes going through the space. My plan was foiled! The platform had to stay.After an afternoon of frustration with The Platform That Came To Stay, I came up with a plan B I liked even better than plan A! I decided to embrace the platform and build it out on the front to meet the depth of the hearth. I decided to create a mid-century style hearth that extended all the way from one wall to the other, to be covered in concrete for a sleek, minimal look that would tie in with the floors and walls, allowing the Boral stone fireplace to take center stage. (More like stage left, but you get the idea …)
After we built out the platform, we covered it with sheets of Wonderboard that we screwed into place with Rock-On screws, and then I prepped the area for a couple of coats of Ardex Feather Finish in white. Prepping simply involved putting fiberglass joint tape between boards and where the Wonderboard met the brick of the fireplace. This step prevents the concrete feather finish from cracking as the structure shifts with house settling and temperature/humidity changes that affect the wood structure below it.
Ardex feather finish is a material typically used as a floor leveler or to repair subfloors before laying the finished flooring material. But it’s become a trendy finish for countertop refinishing and other home DIY projects with a modern flair. The technique I used on the hearth is actually the same process that was used in the old ABM studio house countertops to cover the formica countertops. On the left side of the fireplace, I was smoothing the Ardex over Wonderboard. On the right side, I was smooshing it into the spaces of the brick.
Ardex is a lot of trial and error, but I learned to only work with small batches at a time, because it sets up quickly and becomes very difficult to smooth out. After about 30 minutes, I went back and scraped off any majorly uneven areas, such as the globbyness around the front ledge of the hearth. I absolutely couldn’t get photos of this because I was working along and also working against the clock with the Ardex.
White Ardex is very difficult to find in my experience, but you can order it some places online. I would try calling around in your area to see if you can buy it locally to save on shipping costs. I didn’t have any luck here in Canton, Ohio.
Now for the nook where this very ’80s midwestern media cabinet used to reside. Of course, some of us older folks remember when TVs used to be monstrosities. In fact, until I graduated high school, my family had one of those huge cabinet televisions that was an actual piece of furniture with a dial on the front. A DIAL. When I designed the new space for our flat-screen TV, I knew I wouldn’t need the depth required for an older television, but ironically, I wanted enough room for my turntable and receiver. So my dad (who has done all of my drywall work for me—thanks, Dad!) moved forward the back wall so I had just enough space to build a shelf for my vintage record equipment and a shelf for my speakers and albums.
After the drywalling was complete, I built supports for the chunky nook-style shelving using 2x3s, as shown below. I attached the supports to the rear wall and side walls after making sure there was enough room to comfortably fit my records, and of course making sure the shelf support was level.After the supports were anchored into the wall, I attached the front 2×3 and covered the supports with 1/4″ plywood. I planned out the support size so that the 1/4″ plywood would make the front of the shelves flush with the drywall around it. After nailing on the plywood, I did a lot of sanding to compensate for any unevenness in the plywood, then I primed, wet sanded, and painted the shelves to match the walls.
I had planned to take more process photos of the shelf-building when I built the upper shelves, but since I decided not to do upper shelves, I don’t have as many photos as I would’ve like to have shared. Feel free to ask me any questions about this process in the comments at the end of this post!
Because we will be using a 2″ sound bar mounted to our TV (situated at the bottom of the TV) and a wireless subwoofer, I decided to keep my record player on its own speaker system. I actually bought “new” vintage speakers that perfectly fit in with my record shelf, and have drilled holes in my shelf to connect all of the wires out of site. Also, since we built the wall that the TV and shelves are on, I added electrical outlets behind my turntable and receiver, as well as behind the television. And when I said I added, I mean Dad added. (Thanks again, Dad!)

Beautiful Homes of Instagram Our “Beautiful Homes of Instagram” is going all the way to Australia today! I can’t tell you enough how much I love that country! I have many amazing readers from there and have even had some clients from Australia and because of that, this new “BHI” feels extra special for me. Sharing Ali’s, from @urban_farmhouse_build, stunning newly built home will be a treat for all of us! Ali and I have been talking about this feature for some time now. You guys have no idea how hard she worked to have her house ready. She really wanted the pictures to be good and she did all she could to make the home look amazing. I honestly can’t thank her enough. The feature couldn’t get any better, Ali! As you will see, the soothing color palette makes Ali’s entire home feel calm, serene and stress-free and who wouldn’t love to live in a place that has this kind of feeling? Read on to know more about this talented homeowner and her inspiring home. “My name is Ali and I was so delighted when Luciane invited me to share our home with you on Home Bunch. I have always loved interior design and architecture, and have so enjoyed the creative process of designing and building our family home. We live in a small town in the Southern Highlands (1.5 hour drive south of Sydney, Australia) with our 3 children. We had been lucky enough to have the opportunity to build our last house, which we loved, but it was a large country block further out of town, and we found that the long trek from home to school was wearing thin. We dreamed of finding land closer to town, but that still had a rural feel and open vistas that we had so enjoyed in our last home. We finally found what we were looking for, but there were a couple of hurdles to overcome – it was more land than we wanted to look after, and it was prone to flooding. Two years later, after a subdivision and endless earthworks, we could finally start building our home. I often think what on earth we did for inspiration before the internet. Sites like Pinterest, Houzz and Home Bunch where a great source for ideas, and my husband John and I luckily shared the same vision and kept saving the same pictures – white board and batten modern farmhouses. Whilst a common feature in the American and New Zealand houses we loved, board and batten is not often used as a building material in Australia and we were keen to use something a little different. Standing seam roofs were also a regular feature in our “dream home” pictures, and an overall aesthetic that was a clean, contemporary interpretation of classic farmhouse style. Luckily we found an architect who was great at translating our dreams into affordable reality and we finally started building about 2 years ago. The build, although slower than we hoped, went very smoothly and we moved in a little over a year ago. The process of decorating has been a slow one, and is still not finished! We had some favourite pieces of furniture from our old house, but much of it didn’t fit in size or style, or had not survived the young children stage. Finding the time to source the finishing touches remains a challenge, but I’m trying to be patient! It’s such a lovely house to live in, bright, cozy and comfortable, and we are so enjoying just being here. The garden is also very much a work in progress. We planted a “stage one” garden when we moved in so as to have some instant grass for the kids (and pets!), but plan to expand on it with more beds and trees in the coming months. A small guest/pool house is also in the pipeline for the beginning of next year. John and I have so enjoyed the process of building our home that since finishing it last year, we have joined forces in a commercial venture, subdividing another block of land and building 3 spec homes. They are in a similar “modern country” style and have been a wonderful opportunity to use many of the ideas and finishes that we didn’t get a chance to use in our house. They were well received and sold quickly, so being the gluttons for punishment that we clearly are, we have recently purchased a new block of land in town and look forward to next year’s project of building two more cottages (past project photos are on Instagram @copelanddevelopments). I find that my style is constantly evolving, so it’s very rewarding having the opportunity to start from scratch and design something new each time. When I’m not designing houses I love to paint, and I’m also involved in local theatre – acting, directing and set designing. I had always loved Martha Stewart’s Bedford Grey kitchen, but as it is unavailable in Australia, went through endless paint samples trying to find a similar shade of “greige”. We used Dulux “Narrow Neck” in Double strength. Countertop The countertops are 40mm honed Carrara marble. Breakfast Nook This stunning grey kitchen opens to a bright breakfast nook with banquette. Isn’t it dreamy? Faucet & Backsplash Tapware is Perrin & Rowe “Io” in satin nickel from The English Tapware Company. Similar backsplash tile can be found here. Lighting Lights are the Eldridge Pendant from Ballard Designs. Flooring & Hardware The flooring is engineered oak in the colour “Cannes” from Preferences Flooring – similar can be found here. Handles and pull are the “Duluth” range in satin nickel from Restoration Hardware. Open Feel The kitchen opens to family room with board and batten fireplace and vaulted tongue and groove ceiling. This is just stunning! Layout A peninsula divides the kitchen from the dining area. Dining Room Dining room light is the Large Rectangular Linen Shade Pendant from Restoration Hardware in “Sand”. Living Room We love the high raked ceiling in this space and the open floor plan, which helps the room feel bright and spacious. The barn doors are a favourite feature and were custom made for us by the builder. Wall lights above oak shelving are Boston Library lights in antique nickel from Circa Lighting. Fireplace is faced with Buxeuil Limestone. Paint Color Paint colour is Dulux “Snowy Mountains” Half Strength. Linen sofas are from Molmic Sofas. Pillows Pillows from Boho Pillow and Walter G. Lounge Room We call this our “night room” as it is were John and I retreat to after the kids are in bed. I wanted to make it more intimate and cozy than the living room by using timber paneling and textured wallpaper. The furniture is all from our old house which we have had some time. I’m hoping to eventually update some of the pieces, but in the meantime, it’s a very comfortable place to curl up and watch TV. Similar coffee table can be found here. Flooring In keeping with the monochrome palate, I used a small gloss white penny round tiles on the floor and a black and nickel “Bistro” wall sconce from Restoration Hardware. Snug This is what we call the kids hang out space. I recently purchased these gorgeous pillows from Boho Pillow, which has really made the space. I’m really hoping they look after them! The Spirit Of Wabi-Sabi Interiors
Capturing the spirit of Wabi-Sabi in the home, with all of its sweet imperfections, leads to a sense of peace and a balanced sense of self. These four Japanese influenced interiors range from an ultra rustic aesthetic that toys with transience through aged wood, right through to a clean modern places with softer wabi-sabi moments. Raw timber, rustic stone, discoloured concrete, woven rugs, and hand-made rattan pieces thread through all the spaces in between, generating the reassuring lived-in look that defines the aesthetic.
Visualizer: Yana Prydalna Rugged wooden pillars and beams dominate the first of our four home tours, alive with beautiful imperfections around their bark. The tree trunk structures build a sense of walking through the forest itself. A monochrome rug plants a freshness in the room that offsets the natural composition. The modernity is carried through in tidy contemporary seating and stylish throw cushions.

A natural rug encircles the bed area, and the circle theme is continued into the rustic ensuite bathroom by an illuminated vanity mirror. The glow from around its edge highlights the imperfection in the concrete wall, building texture and depth.

The opposite side of the fireplace wall is home to a kitchen diner. A terrazzo kitchen backsplash pulls together tones from the wooden cabinets and concrete floor. Dining chairs are teamed with a chunky wooden dining bench and a live-edge table to build a relaxed lived-in look.
A vase of twigs and some wooden chopping boards accessorise the room with natural charm.
Ceramic decorative vases stand tall on a floor bed design. Swing arm wall lamps cross a wall rug of uplifting blue.
Sand coloured walls add grit to a minimalist bathroom scheme. Modern wall sconces match with black bathroom furniture and fixtures.
Designer: Killing Matt Woods Visualizer: Melissa More Flores Our third home is an intimate yet utilitarian apartment, inspired by Brutalism and the local warehouse vernacular. A curved sofa sweeps in with a soft blue hue, which completely changes the dynamic of the square living room.
A square coffee table counteracts the sofas curve, bringing the layout back in line with a custom concrete topped console unit.
A tan accent chair floats between the lounge and the kitchen diner. A high-polish concrete floor exaggerates the textured effect of a ribbed kitchen island feature.
The concrete mezzanine balustrade provides a mount for a wall light, which descends elegantly over the circular island feature.
Ribbed wall units ripple across the back wall of the kitchen.
Matching panel work textures the side of the modern staircase.
A console table carries curves to complement the crescent sofa.
Visualizer: Prodan Design Our last tour is a back to roots interior filled with natural texture and soft earth tones. A mix of new and traditional elements mingle minimalism, wabi-sabi and ethnic styles in peaceful harmony. A modern sofa and round coffee table settle on a tribal print rug. A vase of Pampas grass adds height and a gentle tactile element.
The room has a simple geometry. A low bench trims the base of a projection wall, a stack of display shelves cut into the corner, and roller blinds complete the wraparound linearity.
Walls, ceiling, doors, floor, and furniture all pull from the same colour palette, giving the eyes rest.
Raw timber builds the shelves, which give home to rustic bowls and pots.
The wooden floor of the lounge ends at concrete kitchen tile.
A white washed wood dining bench, table and chairs make a cool combination with the pale kitchen.
The L-shaped kitchen seems to extrude directly from colour matched walls.
The earthy master reminds us of the gorgeous bedroom in this Japanese inspired house.. A similar pairing of bedroom pendant lights brightens the bedside tables too.

Wabi-sabi essence is dappled in the concrete bedroom walls.
A unique wall mirror, pouf and timber shelf make up a small vanity area in the corner of the room.
In contrast to soft neutrals throughout the rest of the interior, the bathroom is awash with black.
The kids’ room is a staggered layout of two sleep areas. Two poufs span a large floor rug.

Balancing Modern Minimalism In Black And White
