Breandán Ó Murchú said that while the media was obsessed with the success being enjoyed by his son Cillian at present, and while that was fine, there was more to it than that.

“There are so many things happening in the world, that we should be sensible about these things and that’s what he’s saying himself as well,” said Breandán.

“We’re very pleased with him and very happy that he’s getting on so well.”

When the news came through, Cillian was at home with his parents. “We were all here, there are four of us and each is as important to us as the other, we were all together and we had a cup of tea and the story came and we were delighted.”

Cillian’s father admitted to not being fond of the fuss or ‘puililiú’ that comes with his son’s fame but recalled his son’s early interest in drama during the interview.

“He was always lively, a lovely little fellow, full of chat, and he always liked to have an adventure going on in his imagination constantly – he was full of spirit and life and imagination.

“He loved being in the company of other children and I’d say he made up a lot of stories and they did a lot of wild things from time to time – he was very mature as a young person and, I’d say, when he was at school he annoyed a teacher or two as he found it difficult to sit still while in national school, you know the way with young lads.”

His early interest was in music and the rhythm of music, his father noticed. “It’s interesting that, as he grew older, he showed an interest in the old ‘Fiannaíocht’ stories about Diarmuid and Gráinne, that surprised me.

"Anything that was exaggerated or larger than life, he enjoyed that, and I suppose there’s a link between that and drama, I don’t know.”

His father recalled that Cillian didn’t seem to be very interested in his studies during the year but when he set his mind to it, he did very well in exams and so on. “He didn’t want to spend all his time studying and when he went to Presentation College, they were very good, there were one or two in particular who noticed his interest in literature and that he had an aptitude for writing.

"When they had a band, they gave Cillian and his friends an opportunity to go on stage, and there were a few people who helped him on, including the author Billy Wall.

“Cillian was lucky to meet him, he was also very interested in history.

“I don’t think he showed an interest in acting until he met Pat Kiernan and the gang in Corca Dorcha. “He told me then that he saw Clockwork Orange on stage and this had an enormous impact on him. “He said somewhere that we didn’t bring him to the theatre when he was young but he forgot that he had three younger siblings and that made it more difficult to go to plays.

“If I was starting again with him, I’d bring him to more plays because it’s clear that he had a deep interest.”

Meeting Pat Kiernan and Enda Walsh gave Cillian the confidence he needed to immerse himself in theatre, his father said. “He got the taste for it and followed his heart, he knew then this is what he wanted to do.

“He didn’t want to do it for publicity or anything, he just wanted to do it right, I must give him that.”

Mr Ó Murchú said that Cillian wanted to do things right and that was something that pleased his father. “That’s something you wouldn’t expect from young people – you know yourself about boys, he’d lose school bags and other things like all young lads but when he put his mind to it, you’d know he wanted to do it right and that helped him enormously.”

When Cillian made his breakthrough with the stage production of Disco Pigs, he was still a Law student in UCC and his parents were getting conflicting advice from different sources saying that he should pursue his career in theatre as he was so obviously talented, while others were saying that he would be foolish to abandon his studies for the stage.

They saw him on stage in his first production, Frank McGuinness’ Observe the Sons of Ulster. “He was very good in that, I thought, though I didn’t think he was better than others in the play or anything like it but we knew he was very serious and then Disco Pigs was a revelation for us because it was on a different level entirely.

“Pat and Enda, it was clear that they were on a different level as they were so creative, himself and Eileen Walsh, the professionalism of that work amazed us and there was no stop to him after that and he met with very nice people who helped him on the road and they helped him.

“We’re very pleased entirely for him, I don’t like to say we’re proud of him because it’s his achievement, not ours,” he said.

“We brought him into the world and we did our best but we don’t see at all that we had a hand in the work that he’s doing at present but we’re not going to lose our wits and neither is he.

“We don’t like to make too much fuss about him, he’s got a job like the sons and daughters of other people and the difference, he gets a lot of publicity. “All the same we’re so happy for him and pleased.”

He said that he and his wife were in an empty cinema when they went to a 5pm screening to see him on the big screen and were very impressed. Mr Murphy is looking forward to seeing Cillian’s newest film, Small Things Like These, which is based on a Clare Keegan book and said that his son learned a lot on the Ken Loach film, The Wind That Shakes the Barley.

“I remember he came home one evening after filming and he was very worried about something that happened during that day’s filming, as if it were something that really happened, and that’s down to how immersed in the work he was and the methods of Ken Loach, that work came from the heart for that movie, I felt.” He said that film allowed people, including Cillian’s mother’s people and his own family who were involved, to talk about that period.

At home, Cillian will talk about anything before he will talk about the movies and while his parents ask him questions from time to time, and he answers them, they don’t want to fuss too much.

As for going to the Oscars, Breandán and his wife don’t intend to travel. “If he’s nominated for a BAFTA, we will go there as it’s closer to home and when he comes home from the Oscars, we will make him a cake.”

Vance hopper headcanons

Vance has autism, really good at masking it but sometimes he gets overwhelmed and that’s where the big scary Vance hopper image comes from. He doesn’t like loud noises or flashing lights and he likes playing pinball because he can hit buttons and tap his fingers for hours on end without losing any desire to play.

His dad is an abusive dickhole that his mother really had to fight to leave but when he was 12 she started dating griffins dad and they moved into their house. Griffin was 10 at the time and they’re really close, griffin has adhd so they bonded over learning to accept what they are after spending so much time being scrutinized for it.

Pinball and Micheal myers are his 2 biggest hyper fixations. Something about Micheal myers has him going “he’s so me.” Everytime he sees him (something about the big scary misunderstood man story) he has his mask and a movie poster framed on his wall. He also has a mini cheap pinball machine griffin won him at an arcade once (he felt bad Vance couldn’t come because of all the lights and sounds) it’s really crappy but when he’s sick at home or smt he plays with it

He’s actually a pretty active reader, he steals from Bruce’s library on a weekly basis. They have their own mini book club whenever Bruce reads something and likes it hell shove the book into Vance’s hands and tell him to check it out and he always does.

He’s a really good story teller so long as it’s written down, he does a good job at summarizing stories and explaining them when he’s writing. He also really likes poetry but he’s to embarrassed to admit it

He’s really fond of finney but his instinct when he sees him is to be fondly mean. He’ll shove him but he’s always gentle about it and he’ll always glare at him but never actually say anything mean. Finneys gotten used to it and he doesn’t mind because he knows if someone else were to try him Vance would start barking

At school he’s really closed off and quiet, the only thing people notice about him is the way his face rests all bitchy and he taps his pencil against the table. His grades are pretty good but he still gets help from finney and Bruce for math and science respectively

Him and Robin work out a lot, also play fight which always freaks the other boys out but they get back up and laugh. Robin boxes and sometimes Vance goes to the gym with him because he feels more comfortable being there if robins there too. Robin brings his radio and they’ll listen to music they like and share it with the other (Vance will bring his new Iron Maiden tape and play it for them and at random points robin’ll go “oh this one’s good.” And he mentally cheers.)

He and Billy bonded over enjoying silence. (And Depeche Mode ironically enough.) Billy always waves at him when he’s delivering and Vance gives him that cool guy nod but really he appreciates being noticed and often leaves snacks in his mailbox for him (he says it’s his mom though liar!!) they sit next to eachother in history and Billy will whisper to him tiny translations on what they’re doing so he can understand it (Billy really likes history he’s super into old Hollywood conspiracy’s for some reason.)

His favorite movies are Halloween, rocky horror picture show, the stepford wives and clockwork orange. (He and Bruce share a love of the stepford wives but he doesn’t understand rocky horror and the other two scare him. Robin loves Halloween but the rest aren’t his style, finney likes stepford wives and rocky horror he saw both of those at the drive in with him, Billy likes the stepford wives book better and griffin solely likes action movies )

Vance would say if anyone asked that he’s the original og ONLY REAL FAN of paranoid by Black Sabbath and he would call people posers. He also bases his personality and vibe on dazed and confused - Led Zeppelin (he’ll lie and say he hates the movie when that comes out but he’s a liar and a fraud.)

He’s to scared to spend his money and lets it pile up. One day he pulls open a draw and exposes a stash of cash to which Bruce says “holy shit what the fuck.” And then convinces him to buy himself something nice and not make a big dent. He’s not used to being able to treat himself and Bruce helps him learn to do that occasionally (it’s usually him buying snacks for everyone even though Bruce keeps saying that’s not what he meant.)

The choker he wears his mom made him it was originally a bracelet she crocheted when he was a baby, she kept adding inches to it as his birthdays passed but on his 15 he told her she should leave it as it was and her wear it like a choker. He only takes it off to shower and sleep (and he wouldn’t do that if his mom hadn’t yelled at him about sleeping in it before)

He wears half his band shirts with the sleeves cut off and low down his ribcage but always has on something on top so no one ever noticed until he took his jacket off one day and griffin made the presence of his side very loud (“where’s the rest of your fucking shirt Vance?? Are you going through something-“ “no shut up just shut up it’s a STYLE!”)

He’s got 2 stick and pokes both on his forearm, they’re super sloppy but he really likes them. One’s a star and the others a really rough flower (Bruce drew it on the corner of one of his books and he was like yeah that’s it that’s the one)

If u play dream on around him he will hit the high note and then not make a single sound for the rest of the night

Really likes Billy’s dog, Roxy. He’ll pull up to his house and say “bring Roxy.” Pet her and then leave it’s a ritual now. If he passes the house he’s petting the dog. He’s more of a cat person though, Bruce has a black and white cat named sumi, whenever he’s over reading books in Bruce’s fathers office he’s holding her and petting her in a spinny chair like an evil villain

Sometimes In class he draws stick figure doodles of the boys in his notebook, they make him smile

On his more timid days where he’s easily explosive he tends to do his worst, if he’s overstimulated and you bump into him or shove him or say something he’ll lose it. He’s been trying not to do it but it’s hard because everything bubbles over into anger for him

He and griffins rooms are right across from eachother and 9/10 times HES sitting in griffins bed, he just likes his company.

Anytime he’s at finneys house Gwen asks to braid his hair and he always says yes and she’ll go on and on about how nice and silky his hair is but it’s only like that because Bruce made it his mission one year to get him on a routine and fix his curls. He was successful.

He’s good friends with Gwen and Amy and Donna, sometimes he’ll sit at their lunch table if Billy isn’t there (history is his lunch period) and scare off all the bullies, he always looks really small beside them because he feels safer being himself there. They tell him freshmen drama and he eats it up

Welly welly welly well my brothers it is time once again it would appear, for uncle Alex to tell you a story. An omission from the tale of my previous exploits and this, my dear brothers, is my way of sending my deepest appy polly logies to you all; twas a nochy like any other I suppose, my little droogies and I out in the thick of it. This was our second visit of the evening, our nightcap until we four parted and I found myself headed bedways to municipal flatblock 18-a, but tonight brothers I found that this second bout of moloko plus had done me no good at all; no indeed my brothers, all it seemed to achieve was to further stir me for another few hours out to myself, the other three could follow me or not. Georgie had a funny look about his glazzies,shagged fagged, fashed and downright useless. In no state for any more of the ultraviolence tonight. No indeed.

Outside it was bitter cold, much much bitterer and colder than I had remembered it. Soon enough the knives that I had ingested would begin to work their magic, brothers and I would become all the more aware of the lewdies, or lackthereof out and about on the streets. I had bid my little droogies a dobby nochy, that much was true but it was now more apparent than ever that night would soon be over and was bleeding over into the young hours of the morning. Luckily for little old me, I had my maskiwask in my clutches from an earlier spree of shop crasting under full, glorious anonymity hidden, too under the cover of darkest and most mysterious night. Black sky was now a very deep blue and as the moloko plus paid its due dividends I feel, o dear brothers, that the sand in my own ultraviolent hourglass was running out, running thinly like the krovvy of a malchick low on his iron. A rustle from an abandoned gazetta pricked mine ears as I trudged carefully through the street, waiting patiently for any sign of life.Caution was the key in these night-time affairs as the threat of the barry place was ever present, and while I did not fear the stripy hole I did fear for what it may have done to me old pee and em.

I took some liberties with my route home, opting for small alleys as opposed to wider, much more open streets. An unorthodox decision considering I had found myself droogless and after yet another clash with Billy boy and his other eunuch jellies could have even put myself at risk of an ambush but having no one but myself beside me makes this victory mine alone. My pocket jingled with pretty polly, distended from the volume of it. The noise seemed to draw out a devotchka. She looked poogly, her dress hanging off her as though it had been thrown on in a hurry. Big brown glazzies met mine and I could see the glimmer of tears in them, clearly she had been boo hoo hooing and for why I did not know. The old in-out always went down a treat when the urge was still around, nagging even after a whole nochy of fillying. I fancied I could slooshy her heart hammering against her ribs and what a pleasant sound it was, strands of dark brown glory flopped limply over her pale, moonish face as she looked up at me all, like expectant. I watched her back herself up against the wall, making it clear to me that someone had gotten to her first. Had I been a bit more present, I might have left her to find some other dama for myself. There were plenty about after all but mostly I was glad to have found her in the state I had. All warmed up, brothers. Relaxed despite her best wishes not to be. I fancied myself to be a kot, I did. Quite right. This is what, dear reader, cats of the street are so fond of doing. Breeding, filling the streets with as many filthy beasts as their malenky bodies might let them before bog gets them as he does all things. Never one for lubbilubbing was dear uncle Alex, brothers. Not one care for it at all I must attest.

Now, where were we? Ah yes, the devotchka with the moony litso. Very very pretty, yes yes there was no denying that brothers and droogs alike, she was beautiful. I fancied the krovvy on her might have tasted like jammiwam but I didn't bother to test it, most of it was staining her dress. Beginning to dry that horrible old blood brown as opposed to that gorgeous red that sent shivers through me when even the tiniest bead dropped from a lewdie. Not so rare and yet far more precious to me than any jewel in the world.

What happened next, brothers, was something I could be nothing but proud of. I let my face drop a little bit so I wasn’t scowling so much, it helps to lessen resistance in devotchkas I find. Despite my partiality to a bit of chase and find, that fateful nochy I was not in the mood, no autos were crasted that night so my poor dear feet were so achy that any more fillying about may have caused them to drop off. I stood there for a bit, chumbling to myself before I pounced. Her creeching was low and half-hearted as if she knew herself that it wasn't going to garner a drop of sympathy from me. This certainly was not the fault of the devotchka, most persons would be in the mindset to creech for their life, especially this one. The creetching soon stopped when, from out of my pocket I brough out my most trusted nozh. Hardly used that night, nice and clean, or at least as clean as a knife could be. It was sharp, cold, so tantalising I could feel my pan handle straining against my neezhnies at the thought of how pretty she might look under it. How still she might be if i teased it against her neck… if I teased it somewhere else. Brothers I found myself drooling at the concept. Just as I suspected, the creeching ceased and was replaced with silent weeping. I watched her chest jerk up and down as she tried to keep herself nice and quiet for me, as I pressed the blade into her neck, gently so it would only barely nick the skin. I would press harder elsewhere when she was nagoy, I thought to myself with deepest delight, watching this devotchka, already poogly from another encounter, half dressed as it were, struggling to undress herself at my command was too much. Then, out came the kot, slashiwashing with my knife the dress was out of the picture.

Ah. Nothing underneath. The cry at the sudden cold made me believe this was not something she had chosen for herself. Fearing the millicents on their early morning beats I worked quickly to strip myself of anything below my waist and get cracking on with the in-out-in out. She would have to warm up to it or suffer the consequences, most devotchkas did when I was with my droogies. On my oddy knocky I was not so sure but she would have to put up with it, my pan handle was now growing too hard to ignore. Her nogas were clasped tight, a feeble attempt for her to keep her dignity. Unlikely to work when I was in such a beastly temperament, every second wasted only seemed to make me angrier. Like when you flap a red cloth at a bull. I parted the clasped legs, it took a lot, mind, but the trembling of the muscles and the purple, pulsing, cables under her pale skin let me know she wouldn’t try and close them again.

Something possessed me to speak to her. A small slip of the tongue to keep her quiet at the world woke up. An angry throb below the belt led my mind elsewhere. I figured the nozh would be enough to keep her quiet, little drops of blood beaded around where the pressure was. Even the lowest whimper made her delicate skin press against the blade. My free hand circled a glazz, and pinched it. Her cry sent me jolting into her on just instinct alone, sheathing myself comfortably. It was clear that someone had been at her before me as there was no resistance, no horrible gravelly feeling and I pushed my way into her. In-out-in-out, smooth as if we were luddilubbing. Her face was scrunched up as if she was trying to build the nerve to start creeching. I wouldn’t have minded, sometimes I find, it really eggiwegs me to keep going.

As I moved. The hand that had been cupping her bezoomny had moved to firmly grip her waist, the hand with the knife had done the same. I made a real show of that one, creating a fine red line down from the centre of the neck all the way down her middle. Like I was a surgeon about to cut her up and perform the old in-out-in out on her guttiwuts. The krovvy only made me harder, so maybe, oh my brothers, it was a mistake to cut her as I did. But oh, it was heaven. Bog new damned. I cast my eyes toward her grahzny dress, and then back to her naked frame.
