Liquid Counter
I had already come up with two pages, but it did not feel right.
I cannot just kill her. There is no trail of corpses to speak off, but they will frame every death on me. My image is already corrupt as is. Calm, deep breaths. Revolver in my grip, the weight felt familiar. Turn me to ash and watch as the flames rekindle from my wreckage. I am not ready to die, nor will I go out without a reason. I feel down, the darkness and madness that roams around me seems determined to pull me down with it as I struggle to stay on the surface.
Push through the troubles of live and give them hell.
The revolver felt hot now, the metal parts had started to glow red with heat. I felt my own chassis build up the heat too, either anger or just a wish to get out alive…
Emma swiped Valkyrie away; she flew past me and rolled on the floor before coming to a halt. She pulled herself up against a table and held her stomach; the hit had disconnected several modules inside her. I turned my aim to Emma and lined up a shot.
Draw, one-shot hit the shield and carried enough kinetic force to knock Emma off her feet, against the wall behind her. My HUD started displaying information about the gun.
“You might have forgotten your past, but can now create a new future for yourself.” >Unknown.
Flames lined up along the top of the gun, forming a sight for me to use. I can feel the heat build back up again, letting it loose would be my only option. The revolver started to repair itself from the heat as I walked closer to where I had seen Emma land.
“Hold still, don’t make the damage worse.”
“Argh that really does sting. No arguments from me. Give her hell.”
Hand by my side, revolver glowing from the heat, I walked closer. I could hear Emma struggling to get up.
“How the hell…” She got herself on her feet.”…did you do that?”
No need to answer, she saw the revolver in my hand.
“WITH THAT? A PIECE OF MOLTEN METAL?”
“It’s more than that. It’s what I have left of my past and I will never let it go.”
“JUST DIE ALREADY!”
Emma screamed and took off running towards me. The suit likely outweighed me by tons, so getting crushed underneath it was not on my list of thing I wanted to happen today.
“Burn higher.”
Straight-arm, revolver loaded, I pulled the trigger again. Less kinetic force, but it got through the shield with ease, cutting a hole through the armor. The look on Emma’s face changed from angry to shocked, scared of the pain she was surely feeling from the burning bullet passing through. I stepped to the side as she ran past me.
>Warning: Nanotech healing detected within hostile! >Damage to internals limited!
She stopped between Valkyrie and me; I could see her through the hole left behind by the round. The hole did not stay for long, soon enough closing with a new layer of armor. Emma turned around and looked at me with a vicious look on her face.
“One more wildcard as you call it. Any damage you cause to me, I can heal. You are powerless against me. I made sure of that, just let it happen and keel over.”
“That’s the one thing I will never do, especially with you.”
“What will you do if I kill her right now? Nothing, that’s what… Your bullets can’t kill me, your blade can’t touch me and the shield is coming back to me any second now.”
I lowered the gun to my side and took in the heat around the room. Sprinklers had surely been disabled; otherwise, the fires would have been extinguished already. Was it something to do with her suit, had it not been sealed off against water?
It is a risk but I cannot think of anything else. Shots would be more effective if I could get the nanotech disabled and water is the one thing you do not want around tech.
“You are correct, but there’s one thing you are forgetting.”
“Oh, and what would that be?”
“I don’t play by your rules.” Blade out, I scanned the ceiling and located the pipes leading to the fire suppression system. A single strike caused a flood of water to pour into the room; my incision had triggered a malfunction in the system, causing it to fire all sprinklers inside the laboratory.
Several sparks flew from Emma’s suit, the shield failed and it refused to obey her commands. I walked closer looked her in her eyes. She started screaming into the room as water washed down my clothes.
“How? HOW? AGAIN, YOU CHEAT DEATH WITH SUCH A BULLSHIT METHOD! GET BACK HERE SO I CAN KILL YOU! I’M GOING TO HANG YOU FROM YOUR OWN…” She kept going; I walked past her over to Valkyrie.
“You alright, can you walk?”
“Give me a hand with my internals and I should be fine.”
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
Valkyrie removed her clothes and opened up her chest panel, her chest had two extra plates of armor. Quite rounded, but sturdy enough to stop bullets.
“Hey, I know they are nice, but focus.” She laughed as I reattached parts that had come loose inside her chest.
“What’s so funny?”
“It tickles.”
“Stay still, dammit. These parts are fragile.”
“Alright. I’ll try.”
“Someday, it’s going to be you doing this to me.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
A quick attachment of the spine and she felt her legs come back online. I helped her up on her feet as she closed up her chest.
“Fun, wasn’t it?”
“As ever, I have never done maintenance on someone else, always on myself.”
“Ah well, let’s find a way out of here before she figures out a way to get herself back on her feet.”
“Let’s.”
Sound of cursing and yelling still filled the room. Still alive, still rocking the same coat as before, but a bit cleaner now. As the drops fell down my hood, I realized how much I had missed the feeling of rain. I allowed the water to wash me down before getting myself back to the matter at hand.
Now how to get out of here?
