Patriots snubbed again at the 25th Annual ESPY Awards

The 25th annual ESPY Awards were held in Los Angeles Wednesday night. The ESPY’s are the annual celebration of the previous year in the world of sports. As it relates to the NFL, the New England Patriots were up for several awards for their Championship Season.

As it turns out, they only earned an ESPY for ‘Best Game’ for their Super Bowl LI victory over the Atlanta Falcons. In addition, Edelman’s Super Bowl catch was up for ‘Best Play’ and Tom Brady’s record-breaking performance in the Super Bowl LI was up for ‘Best Championship Performance’.

However, Aaron Rodgers throw to Jared Cook beat out Edelman’s catch in the Super Bowl and Kevin Durant earned the ‘Best Championship Performance’ ESPY, beating out Brady and Clemson’s DeShaun Watson. Really?

If it were not for Odell Beckham’s catch in a meaningless game beating out Malcolm Butler’s Super Bowl winning interception for ‘Best Play’ in 2014, this would be the biggest snub in the history of the ESPY’s.

First of all, not even making a case for the Edelman catch, if the Rodgers to Cook throw was the best play of the NFL season then we should all be incredibly disappointed. Not to take anything away from it, it was a great play, but best play of the year? Julio Jones’ catch in the Super Bowl was a better play and on a bigger stage. Edelman’s improbable fingertip grab was equally as big, on a larger stage.

But alas, this is what we have come to expect from the ESPY’s. They offer some powerful moments, such as Jarrius Robertson receiving the Jimmy V Perseverance Award for his lifelong battle with health problems. But for the most part, it’s an agenda driven awards show.

Perhaps the best part of the entire show, besides Kevin Durant clearly not being able to handle a joke, was Peyton Manning. After a rough first couple minutes that had you thinking that his whole performance would be cringeworthy, Manning rebounded and was incredibly funny.

Manning made himself the butt of a few Patriots-related jokes, including the video featuring Tom Brady above. However, Julian Edelman may have had the last laugh as he threw a bit of shade Manning’s way when accepting the award for ‘Best Game’.

In the end, award shows like this are borderline meaningless. The Patriots may have walked away with just one ESPY award last night, but that’s just fine. With all the Lombardi Trophies they are carrying, there is no room for another meaningless award.
