TURN-126: Judai VS Manjoume -- Dark Sword the Dragon Knight

Judai pursues Martin as he heads towards where the three Phantasms have been locked away--only to find the zombified Manjoume standing in his way. As Manjoume refuses to make way for him, Judai ultimately duels him, with Manjoume summoning Return Zombie and Blood Vorse as he pounces on Judai. Elsewhere, having learned that Johan and co.'s duels were a ruse, the students rush inside to get to where the food is, but they are beaten by the zombie students, causing most of the students to have now become zombies. Just then, at the power-generator area, O'Brien hears a transmission from someone.

126 is now finalized! Just a quick 'un this time since I ran a bit late with myself for GX work--got a bit caught up in some interesting TFSP stuff along with my round of story-translation with Kite's story events lol--and since episodes 127-128 and 129-130 lead into each other pretty well, I thought I'd just work on 126 this time as a bit of a calm before the storm. And it does offer that vibe, as we get Martin dashing for the three Phantasms--remember them?--and Judai in hot pursuit, only for a zombie Manjoume to get in his way. The Dark Sword the Dark Demon Realm Dragon Knight (Dark Blade the Dragon Knight--OCG name be long here) he pulls out is kinda neat, its only having one appearance aside, while the conversation that Misawa has with Zweinstein later gives our group some hope to get out of this dimension if they can get past the zombie horde to get to the tennis courts (remember them?).

Animation error-wise, only a handful of quick things to work on for 126 (maybe a benefit of having two Animation Directors on board for this one?): two card edits, a split screen, and an odd quick flash of a Duel Disk part not being drawn in, lol. Also, two bits in the preview related to episode 127. As usual, edit breakdowns below the cut for the interested!

Quick housekeeping: quickly revisited and re-finalized episode 107's hardsub after noticing that I had Ed missing from the translated ending credits for that episode (instead accidentally listing Rei in both cast lists); links updated in the release post there and in the masterpost. oop

Anywho, enjoy! Hoping not to delay myself too much over the next couple weeks in getting 127 and 128 finalized, lol; before I fully work on them, I'll first be back in TFSPland hopefully knocking out both Kotori and Rio's stories to cap off ZEXAL's story events, along with some more incidental work on ARC-V "Dub-Uncut" episode 2. Stay tuned!

Fixes and Edits!

Clocking in as our first error around 12:43 (not too long after the second Animation Director's team kicks in after Flame Wingman's summoning [that's where you can tell the shift from Chi Man Park's style to Ok Mi Lee's]), as Manjoume summons Dark Sword the ... Dragon Knight and Judai looks on, there's a black square on his Disk where Flame Wingman's card should be. A relatively easy fix, as I just slapped on a proxy over it in AfterEffects.

A bit later, as Misawa tries to get into the Power Generator Complex's control panel but has trouble doing so, Kenzan and the others run over to help--but there's a quick movement frame (lasting three total frames) as Kenzan moves to run over where part of his inactive Disk is literally missing--you can see the background of some power-generator panels behind him through the gap, lol. Fixed using Photoshop to grab that part from a later frame in the shot, clipping it out and slightly rotating/adjusting it to fit into this shot; made a perfect fit! Once done, I threw the fixed frame into the footage in Sony Vegas. (Actually noticed this one after working on the other edits as I was revising the episode's subs.)

Later, as Judai summons Gran Mole and has him Contact-Fuse with Neos, there's a quick frame as we pan up to Neos and Gran Mole fusing where Judai has Gran Mole in Monster Zone 2 on his Disk, which should be occupied by Neos. Another quick and easy AfterEffects fix as I just applied a Neos proxy over it.

This one was interesting... After Judai summons Gran Mole and Manjoume notes he also has the same ATK as his Dark Sword the ... Dragon Knight, Judai clicks in on a split-screen to activate his effect; once he explains it, their split-screen splits apart, but Manjoume's moves first for two frames before Judai's finally rapidly moves as their uneven slide-out lasts just five frames (vs the usual 7-8). Fixed this in Sony Vegas by masking out and redoing their slide-outs to be simultaneously timed, making them smoother to last the more common seven frames.

In the preview for 127, as we see the Phantasms' silhouettes rising behind Amon's Eye of the Typhoon, Amon and Martin slide in on a quick split-screen before sliding out to show Eye of the Typhoon being made to dissipate--but for a quick frame on slide-in and slide-out, the border on Amon's split is a bit ghosty and faded, while on the slide-out, the close-up of Eye of the Typhoon being transitioned into is also briefly missing. Being fixed first for 127 proper then applied as I set up the translated preview, I redid the border on Amon's split for both ghosty instances to look more per usual, while on the slide-out, I masked in part of the close-up Eye of the Typhoon shot between him and Martin. (Couldn't really apply this fix to the original preview due to the Japanese title text over the shot.)

As the 127 preview wraps, we have a shot of a shrouded-in-darkness Raviel standing up, with his eyes ominously glowing red as he does so--in 127 proper, this was removed for some reason, so he stands up with his eyes looking normal. I thought it made more sense to still have his eyes ominously glow, so I took the preview version of the shot and masked out the glowing eyes over the footage from 127 to restore it for both the translated preview and the episode proper.

Ik heb Hogwarts Legacy helemaal uitgespeeld (jep, 100% gehaald en alles) en hoewel ik het echt geweldig vind om door Zweinstein te lopen, alle geheimen te ontdekken en de held te kunnen zijn, zijn er ook dingen uit de boeken die ik miste in de game.

Anyway, Episode 131.

Status quo is re-establishes with the cast coming back to Real World. Dis-belts attached to them break apart, presumably because Yubel gained enough power.

Samejima reveals Cobra, and Amon did not came back, he doesn't know Cobra is presumed dead (I guess writers were still wondering if they wanted to bring him back for later, if there was a S5, it probably would have happened).

Daichi, and Zweinstein continue their research on the gate.

We get Martin's backstory, with Rei watching him, and Napoleon talk.

There is a brief moment where Manjoume assumes Judai came back, but it is actually Shı, and Kenzan.

Fubuki randomly returns despite not being present in previous 26 episodes, which strongly suggests this is indeed the second production cycle. I don't know what his VA was doing at the time, since he won't be in S3 for long.

We see the flashback of Asuka comforting Judai, but Judai states this is all his fault, referring to Yubel situation, though the cast assume he is referring to Johan.

Samejima comes, and we get Judai's backstory with Yubel. Apparently, Yubel's card was bought by Judai's dad, so he didn't have it through his earlier childhood. Only after obtaining Yubel, and adding them to his Deck, Yubel started to cause people he fought against to experience illness.

Due to Yubel being separated from the Neos, and Neo-Spacian cards, rather than acquiring the power of Gentle Darkness, Yubel acquired the power of Light of Destruction. Though Yubel already had the aura in the flashback, so there is some production wonkiness going on.

Edo reveals his D-HEROes were also meant to take the power of space, and wonders if Yubel is the same. This plotline is not continued upon, as we find out Yubel's backstory.

Kaiser considers Yubel an appropriate opponent, but has a heart spasm.

While the cast is discussing Samejima's narration, Daichi reveals the singularity will come back to Gravekeeper's Tomb from S1.

We get parallel shots of Judai leaving alone to find Johan, and Echo having a monologue about seeing Amon become a king in Duel Monsters Spirit World without the influence of his adoptive brother Cid.

While Judai is travelling alone, Cronos sees him while holding the eggs he got for the day, then later we see Edo, and Kaiser discussing. Kaiser states that Judai isn't not yet aware about being responsible for his actions, Edo states because he knows this, he is trying to save Johan alone (alluding to his own Duel with Light of Destruction's will to save Takuma Saio back in S2). Kaiser chides him being for still being a child, as he states the others will not allow Judai to go alone, with the implication being Kaiser believes Judai will be responsible for his allies' (including his brother's) inevitable defeat, as none of them have the power enough to defeat Yubel alone, and he isn't particularly optimistic about Judai's chances either.

When they confront Judai, Manjoume tries to punch Judai, but Jim stops him. Most of the cast agree to help Judai, even though he doesn't want them to be involved, except for Sho, Daichi, and Fubuki, who try to convince them to remain in Duel Academia.

The cast use their ace monsters' spirits to open the Dimensional Gate, this is technically the first time Volcanic Doomfire is actually Summoned, as the previous time Austin was merely thinking of Summoning it.

After the main group work their way, Sho, Daichi, and Fubuki Summon their ace monsters to help out.

Kaiser, Edo, Echo, and Cronos, who were not involved with this, also get absorbed by the gate.

This episode's card is Red-Eyes Black Dragon, which Judai calls Fubuki's favourite card.

Kunstenaars in Zweinstein Afdelingen

Het is vandaag de verjaardag van Harry Potter (en Neville Longbottom/Marcel Lubbermans) en dat vieren we door een aantal kunstenaars in de Zweinstein afdelingen te sorteren. Zit jij in dezelfde afdeling als jouw favoriete kunstenaar? 🤔

Keith Haring - Griffoendor/Huffelpuf

Griffoendors staan bekend om hun moed, wat Keith Haring zeker nodig had voor zijn talloze graffiti werken. Graffiti was immers verboden, en voor hij het wist kon hij gearresteerd worden. Daarnaast heeft hij ook de rechtvaardigheid van een Huffelpuf: zo gebruikte hij zijn kunst om onder andere racisme aan te kaarten en de strijd voor LHBTQ+ rechten onder de aandacht te brengen. 

Frida Kahlo - Huffelpuf 

Ook Frida Kahlo heeft de rechtvaardigheid van een Huffelpuf: zo vocht ze tegen racisme en onverdraagzaamheid en kwamen thema’s als identiteit, post-kolonialisme, gender, klasse, en ras in haar werk terug. Kahlo was ook een socialist en bekritiseerde de onderdrukking van het Amerikaanse kapitalisme en imperialisme dat de rijken bevoordeelde en de arbeidersklasse onderdrukte. 

Marcel Duchamp - Zwadderich

Een van de eigenschappen van Zwadderaars is hun sluwheid, een eigenschap die Marcel Duchamp zeker ook deelde. Hoewel de beroemde urinoir ‘Fountain’ van Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven is, claimde Duchamp dat hij de bedenker was. Volgens kunstcriticus Julian Spalding wilde Duchamp de geschiedenis ingaan als een van de founding fathers van de moderne kunst. ‘’Hij had niets verbazingwekkend origineels uit die periode om te laten zien,’’ zegt Spalding in See All This. ‘’dus claimde hij het urinoir.’’ Daarmee liet hij ook zijn ambitie zien, nog een Zwadderich eigenschap. 

Marlene Dumas - Ravenklauw

Marlene Dumas studeerde een jaar psychologie aan de UVA, en deze interesse zie je terug in haar werk. Zo onderzoekt ze de invloed die de dagelijkse stroom aan fotografische beelden heeft op de manier waarop mensen naar elkaar en de wereld om hen heen kijken. Dit doet ze door in haar werk de psychologische, sociale en politieke aspecten van deze beelden bloot te leggen. Een echte Ravenklauw dus!

TURN-131: The Great Ace Card Gathering!! Open, Dimensional Portal!

Judai and the others were able to return safely to the real world thanks to Rainbow Dragon's powers--but Johan did not come back. Judai, knowing that his Yubel card was the cause of this latest incident, feels responsible and isolates himself. Meanwhile, Asuka and the others are informed by Principal Samejima about the Yubel card and its relationship with Judai. While they are, Misawa and Dr. Zweinstein realize that an unusual event will yet again happen at the Duel Academia.

Quick little breather episode after the big Yubel reveal last episode, as our squad finds their way back to the real world and we resolve a few things from the last arc (and the Dis-Belts dissolve to show their role here is done) while setting up for the next one with the pieces (like Echo and Chronos) moving into place. It was nice that Martin and Napoleon had their moment, while O'Brien debriefed everyone on what he saw during the duel and Samejima clues them into what Judai and Yubel's relationship had been like, and the moments later on as the gang come together to join a guilty-feeling Judai in rescuing Johan, telling him they're his friends, is def one of my favorite moments in the show. :') (Now, as Ryou says, we'll see what "consequences" it's all going to lead to...)

Animation-error-wise, thankfully didn't pick up on too much for this one; all told, I handled four fixes, with two being split-screen-issue-related (one in particular was... odd), one card-related fix, and one where everyone wasn't fully drawn in, lol. Details under the cut, as always, for the interested!

Also, a little housekeeping: went back to 130 for a minor update to Johan's "I've dreamed of saving everyone" line for consistency with an update I did here (replacing the comma with a dash); its link in the episode-link post that 129 and 130's post links to, and in the Masterpost, is updated.

Anywho, enjoy--looking forward to revisiting the Dark World and eventually Supreme King Judai stuff, hehe. But for now, with this done, I'll be bouncing back into TFSP to re-translate Sawatari's story events and cap off ARC-V and all the story events (though there is still the rest of the story overworld text to handle, along with a fair amount of other things), then I'll come back and work on 132; I'll probably go back to double episodes with 133 and 134 so that I can handle 135 and 136 together. (Also will be going back to finally finish up ARC-V "Dub-Uncut" episode 2, lol.) Stay tuned!

Fixes/Edits!

After Osamu defeats Judai in the flashback, with Judai falling back to the floor unable to summon Yubel, Yubel's card floats down to Judai--this leads to an inconsistency error, as while it's in the air it's shown with its effect box pointed at Judai, yet the card is flipped and lands with its effect box away from Judai in the close-up shot as it lands. Fixed in AfterEffects, after making an effectless Yubel proxy in Photoshop, where I put it in place and adjusted it as the card fell, then adding a mask with the card border for blending before duplicating the new proxy's layer and upping the brightness on it while masking parts of it over the normal proxy to replicate the light that radiates from it as it falls.

Later, as the gang gets together to summon their ace cards to help expand the portal, the shot immediately after their Monsters are summoned shows Judai and Asuka not fully drawn in, while Jim's unfinished fist stopping pixels above them; as the shot starts to pan and Jim moves his his fist, it still takes a few frames for his layer to hit the bottom edge of the shot. A quick fix in Sony Vegas, as I cropped the shot slightly to hide the unfinished bits.

Right after #2 there, Manjoume shouts, "Go!", while Kenzan slides in for a diagonal split-screen shouting, "Full power, saurus!", and a few things happen here on slide-in and slide-out--for the slide-in, as Kenzan starts to slide in (with his split already a fair way into the shot on its first frame), the shot jumps up a few pixels, causing a black line along the bottom, which takes about four frames to fix itself as Kenzan fully slides in for the split-screen; for the split-out, as Manjoume and Kenzan start to split apart, Manjoume is actually just moved within his split for two frames before they properly start to split into the shot of XYZ-Dragon Cannon, but when they do, Manjoume's split suddenly has a vertical border which sticks there as they slide off to show XYZ-Dragon Cannon. (It's a bit messy as a split-screen...) To fix the slide-in issues, I just cropped the shot slightly as the split-in starts to remove the black line, which works well. Then, to fix the split-out issues with them and the background moving, I masked out Manjoume and Kenzan's splits as they were a bit earlier in the shot and moved them manually as a regular split-out into XYZ-Dragon Cannon, keeping the whooshing going on in their respective splits while masking in Kenzan's Dino eyes for consistency (as I had to recycle a bit of his split before they popped in).

A bit later, as Misawa and Fubuki chip in by summoning Water Dragon and Red-Eyes Black Dragon, Fubuki is moving in for a split-screen but moves within it as he fully slides in, with his thumb showing in the final split-screen. Fixed to be consistent by redoing his split-screen so that he's in his final position from start to finish.
