Thinking about Soulmates Zukka.

Thinking about a soul bond with shared physical pain. About Sokka waking up screaming at 13 because his face BURNS. It aches for weeks as GramGram looks at him with worry(after all, how could a child hurt that badly?)

Thinking about Zuko with hands that ache with the phantom pains of working fishing lines, tying nets, practicing weapons he never held. About his face tingling with cold too sharp for the mild weather of the fire nation. He never tells anyone.

Thinking about Sokka who knows he’s eating enough food, knows he’s been hunting enough for the group, but still his stomach aches with hunger when Zuko travels alone.

About when Iroh is hit by fire from Azula and he feels guilt so sharply it becomes a physical pain and Sokka can’t understand why he hurts so badly.(for a foolish moment he worried Iroh was somehow his soulmate.)

When Zuko has his fever, Sokka feels sluggish.

Just… ugh so much possibility for angst.

Sokka landed bad on his leg during the comit because the feeling of being struck by lightning is fucking distracting, okay?(Zuko is confused when his leg aches along with the lightning wound)

After when Zuko is the fire lord and pushing himself too hard, that is when Sokka finally admits it. He takes care of Zuko because the idiot is too self sacrificing to do it on his own.

Zuko didn’t connect the dots at all.

Feel free if anyone wants to write a fic of this I would love to see it! I may or may not do so but the more the merrier!!

As Sozin's comet arrives, Zuko wakes to find a strange tattoo on his arm. Stranger still is the matching one Sokka has, which both keep ticking towards some inevitably event. Unable to explain it, they march on to face Ozai, knowing only one thing -- no matter what, Zuko and Sokka will stay together. No matter what happens, they'll be at one another's side. Only, it doesn't work. They fail, they fall, and just when things seem at their lowest, they end up living through it again and again, until they can figure out what they're meant to do to make it to tomorrow.

My contribution to @zukkabigbang2024! It's timeloop, it's soulmate marks, it's angst (PLEASE MIND THE TAGS), it's hurt/comfort, but there's a happy ending!

Just randomly thought of a soulmate au for zukka where soul marks are how and where your soulmate touches you for the first time. Zuko's soul mark is a small print near this left eyebrow. However when his father burns him it can no longer be seen and due to the scar Zuko cannot see how his soulmate would ever be attracted to him let alone willing to touch his scar. Bonus points if Sokka's soul mark is also super angsty. I hate that I get these random ideas for fanfics with zero writing ability. Someone please write this😭

Zuko who knows his soulmate is from the Water Tribe. They have to be, the twisting blue saluting over his left bicep can’t belong to anyone else. His father forced him to keep it covered, though he did try to hav rot burnt off despite knowing that soul marks couldn’t be removed. The burn stayed, but the twisting cold blue only became brighter and twisted further up and down his arm. Zuko learn to hate it, it was what he was told, but he hated a lot of things. He hated the Avatar, he hated his father, his masters, commander Zhoa, and his even the gruelling training he forced himself to do every day. Even though he tried, he couldn’t hate the mark on his skin even though he didn’t know them, it made him feel sick. Especially when he remembered his mother telling him stories of how beautiful the love of soulmates were despite never having one.

Sokka has cut, burned and punched the mark of a resting dragon curled around his thigh more times than he can count. Every time it comes back, face soft and content despite its torment. Only his sister knows of it, their parents choosing to keep it secret for his safety. It’s a burden and a shame on his family, he doesn’t care how beautiful or kind she is, she is his enemy. The flame the dragon has blowing from its mouth as softy as wind raged in his dreams and more than anything Sokka hated how safe it feels. It’s evil and dangerous but it’s also warm in a way Sokka hasn’t known since his father left, since before Katara was known as a bender and preferred by all over him. He hates the mark and the soulmate who may be sit, even if he wants nothing more than burn in the embrace of their flame.

It’s only because of Iroh that Zuko isn’t killed. He’s beaten and tortured by his own mean, but before the ship even gets close to land, Iroh has grunted them all to ash and is taking his nephew and running. He knows that the man who calls himself a father will do, knows what will happen should anyone know of how Zuko’s mark has moved over his entire chest as it flowed like an aurora. He will not loose his nephew, even if the boy himself has never been more lost in his life.

love the idea of a zuko that gets so insufferably hot as he ages. like he’s almost 30 and people on the streets pass out when they see him, he’s just so gorgeous. even his friends are all like “don’t look directly at me, you’re making me uncomfortable.” but then there’s sokka, who doesn’t treat him any differently at all. he’ll run into zuko while he’s sparring in all his shirtless and sweaty glory but won’t pause one second before he explodes with his new ideas on how to improve the architecture of the turtle duck pond in the courtyard to make it more friendly to other animals and turn it into a healthier ecosystem for the native plants. and zuko loves this part of sokka—he loves sokka—so why is sokka the one and only person who doesn’t seem to find him attractive?

Some Zukka Canon Divergence Fic Recs !

I'm a little bit insane about zukka canon divergence so here are some that I really enjoyed! All of these are on ao3 :)

Boomerangs and Rainbows by Mindbending, Rated T, 67,555 words, Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death: One of my favorite Zukka canon divergence fics ever! Zuko dies at the North Pole and ends up haunting Sokka as a ghost. I am in love with how this author showed their developing relationship and trust in each other and it's just !! such a great plot, writing style, execution, and character writing.

Blue by bealeciphers, Rated T, 192,682 words, Graphic Depictions of Violence: Ba Sing Se + Blue Spirit zukka canon divergence 👀 A lot of crazy identity shenanigans with this one. This is Zuko pov so it has a lot of focus on Zuko's inner struggle, character arc, identity, and emotions and I think the author did really well! I really enjoyed reading this and seeing the,,,complicated identity concealment zukka going on here that led to some excellent conflict and complicated falling in love!

Operation Leverage by snowandfire, Rated T, 50,723 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: From Ba Sing Se onwards! Zukka fake dating au as Sokka forces Zuko to tell him stuff about fire nation culture :D I liked seeing them get closer! Enemies to friends to lovers my beloved

Leaving it All Behind by Sreeder, Rated M, 259,815 words, Implied/Referenced Rape/Non-Con, Past Child Abuse, Torture, Nudity, Panic Attacks, Implied/Referenced Sexual Assault: This one is for those of you who like reading the dark stuff. I am someone who mostly likes to read more lighthearted things but I read this fic on recommendation and wow is it well-written! Sokka is captured during the siege on the Northern Water Tribe and sent to Zhao's prison camp. He runs into Zuko, and they eventually start working to escape together and get closer in the process. Very slowburn, very intense and dark, graphic depictions of torture and death. This has a completed sequel that continues their journey as well as a third book currently in the works!

I'm Not Angry Anymore by team_avatars_eyebags, Rated T, 69,430 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: Alternate universe where Zuko and Iroh have been peacefully living on Kyoshi Island with secret identities for a good chunk of Zuko's banishment and then the gaang shows up and throw Zuko's entire semblance of peace and contentment out the window! This whole fic is technically pre-slash but I liked the concept and story too much to not include it here lol

boys are more trouble than they're worth by lesbianspikespiegel, Rated T, 11,128 words, No Archive Warnings Apply: Some nice pretty fluffy and humorous Ba Sing Se Zukka! Getting to know each other, getting together, and the struggle of scrambling to hide your secret relationship from your friend group. Overall a very light-hearted and funny fic :D

Thinking about the late 2010 obsession with soulmate au’s and I have one

Soulmate AU where the color of your soulmates eyes is the only color you can’t see until you meet them, and you finally recognize the color you’ve only ever read about

The finer things in life always felt dull to Sokka. The finest silks were flat and lifeless, golden crowns and necklaces looked no more valuable than ice in the arctic.

As the prince of the Southern Water Tribe he was expected to attend many events, always favoring his cultural colors of silver and blue. Which is why he despised attending events in the Fire Nation, the red he could see just fine, everything was drenched in it.

But it was the color of that seemingly rare and precious metal that their nobles favored so much that always fell upon blind eyes.

It was the night of the new Fire Lords coronation. Not much was known about Ozai’s son. He rarely attended public events and he’d never attended any of the same ones Sokka had. This of course wasn’t saying much considering the distance.

Sokka managed to talk his way out of the ceremony itself but his Father and Sister were insistent that he attend the party afterwards. Never one to turn down free food, he grumbled his concession.

Now the young prince made his way through the throng of people, dragged along by Katara who absolutely insisted that he be introduced to the new fire lord properly,

“You are going to be chief one day Sokka, international relations are important,” He only rolled his eyes and let himself be guided through the sea of red nothingness

“Your Highness, please allow me to introduce my brother, Prince Sokka”

“A pleasure to meet you”

Sokkas gaze and thoughts had wandered elsewhere, he hadn’t even registered the Fire Lord reaching out to shake his hand until his sister elbowed him in the ribs.

“Ow! Uh I mean- the pleasure is all mine your highness” He quickly regained control of himself and dropped both his hand and his gaze to the pale one reaching out to him. Katara gave him another sharp nudge from behind, reminding him of societal rules.

He lifted his gaze to the Fire Lords face, pale skin slashed on one side with more of that brutal red and then… his gaze settled finally upon the young lords eyes… and all but a single word emptied from his mind. They were-

I’ve seen a lot of unconventional omegaverse fics, where an alpha ends up with another alpha etc, but I haven’t seen much of that in soulmate aus.

What about a soulmate fic where Sokka and Zuko *aren’t* soulmates, they are very much not destined for each other, but they choose it anyway? They make their own destinies. And it’s hard and it’s messy and it’s worth it all, in the end.
