YOU CAN FIND HOPE FOR FUTURE IN ZOOTOPIA!
Yes, I did just spend my Saturday morning watching a Disney movie, and no I don't have kids at home. I watched it to catch up on the awards race, and I'm so glad I did, and I think the movie should win an Oscar Awards.
Zootopia is a must see for anyone, big and small. It is scarily timely and left me crying at the end because I hope we can have the same ending in real life when we will survive this administration. The main character's ending speech embodies what all of us, who stand in opposition, believe. It is beautiful and powerful, the best and most timely inspirational speech I have heard in a long time. Please share it!
The movie also made me realize that there is something else we should not forget when everything seems hopeless; like when we hear yet another terrible headline such as the mass immigration arrest happening today across the country; that the current administration are mostly people of a different generation. It is a generation that did not grow up with Disney movies that preach inclusivity and universal acceptance like Zootopia does, or female empowerment like Frozen does. But the younger generations have and are growing up with these movies, which means that they are taught a very different outlook on life. And that means there is hope for all of us.
I grew up on Disney movies, and I know how influential they have been in who I am today. I applaud this when it comes to movies like Mulan, which taught me that I could do anything even though I am a woman. But I also bemoan Disney's effect, as my girlfriends do, when it comes to our outlook on love since it taught us that we should wait for prince charming to come save the day, from such movies as Cinderella or The Little Mermaid. Naturally, this has caused many of us to have deep conflicts within ourselves since independent woman waiting on prince charming are not two things that are easily align.
But thank God that is a thing of the past since Disney exhausted all the old fairytales and had to start creating their own original stories. By having to look for inspiration in the now, we get such movies as Zootopia and Frozen which are relevant to our times. Since they are extremely successful, we do not need to worry that Disney will ever tell antiquated stories again, and this leaves me extremely hopeful about us surviving this administration and us living in a better world than we are today in not too far away of a future.
Until then, we need to make sure to stay involved and vote in our local elections and midterms to ensure that this old mindset can't dig its claws and hold on to long term offices. And we need to not let this administration scare us because they will try, we need to continue to spread the good word, create more powerful and positive media like Zootopia, and we need to care for each other. As Judy says:
"Try. Try to make the world a better place. Look inside yourself and recognize that change starts with you. It starts with me. It starts with all of us.”
