Catastrophic news! I was SO looking forward to seeing awesome Russian surf band Messer Chups next month. (I’ve only ever seen them play once – at Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender in 2019). Messer Chups were due to perform in London and Brighton in May – but it’s been announced all their UK dates are cancelled! There’s been a lot in the news lately about how new Brexit regulations make it virtually impossible for many musicians to tour here now. This possibly explains why Messer Chups regularly and extensively tour all through Europe but seemingly always bypass the UK. If you’re not au fait with Messer Chups: the St Petersburg instrumental trio are the heirs to The Cramps (and I don’t say that lightly!), specializing in deeply twang-y, rumbling surf-noir played with real aggression and saturated in a profound comprehension of old horror movies and low-brow trash culture. And frostily composed bassist Zombierella is a total goddess! There’s the possibility the cancelled dates will be rescheduled in November 2023. Fingers crossed!
