In previous years, almost every time we heard that a new South African film was coming out, we would automatically think about a crime or political/struggle film. At that time we were accepting of these types of films because we were still licking our wounds of the past as a nation, and we needed to address some of these topics in order to explain to the oppressors that what they did was wrong, and we needed to show criminals that crime does not pay.
With time, these topics did not get irrelevant, but they were fast becoming recycled material so much so that we saw the South African film industry taking a big nose dive to the point where we could not even celebrate the creative brilliance of films such as Five Fingers For Marseilles due to the fact that we had given up on our own local film industry.
But some how the introduction of some creative TV series and the growth of local productions on TV that have moved away from telling stories the way we used to tell them post apartheid, we have seen a resurgence of very creative writing in our film industry.
Yes, South Africa has been one of those very conservative countries when it came to the TV & Film screens. On the outside we are a very liberal country, but on the inside we are tighter than something I won’t even imagine (Get your mind out the gutter, I’m not talking about that); and while your mind is still there, because I know it is. Let’s talk about Love Lives Here just for a bit…
We have seen great films in recent years that are locally produced, and I have commanded them before for flipping the script and tackling exciting topics and unexpected topics and keeping us on our toes, but the way Love Lives Here approached the issues of love, was definitely unexpected and very steamy indeed.
From a man’s perspective, I never shy away from saying that South Africa has some of the most beautiful women in the world, and when you watch Love Lives Here you will appreciate how the women in this film took control of their beautiful bodies, their sexuality and celebrated them boldly.
Without giving away too much, all I can say is that Love Lives Here is a complete turn around in the South African film industry. Love Lives Here is that film we all do not want to admit that we have always wanted to see on our big screens, but we just never knew who was brave enough to take that first step and be willing to take the praise with the criticism that will definitely come from those who claim to uphold some kind of values pretending like such things don’t happen.
Props have to be given to the ladies of Love Lives Here, especially Thando Thabethe and Zola Nombona. What you will see in this film are women who take complete control of their bodies and tell very compelling stories in two different ways that are an existing reality, and they tell their stories in very steamy ways, in ways that only “adults” can understand.
The men in the film also tell this everyday story that many guys out there live, a life lived behind semantics. You look at Lungile Radu’s character and realize how he somehow hides behind humility and playful charm while omitting some truths about himself and his life complications; then you dive into the world of Motlatsi Mafatshe’s characters and see that typical big mouth showoff we can’t help but love to be around, and see how these two lives somehow feed off each other.
This is a film filled with heartbreak, filled with love, fill with those friendship moments, those “crazy” ex moments, and this film is filled with a lot of heat. This one of  the first South African commercial films that have gone all the way in telling a complete story without holding back. It is a visual feast, it is a true everyday story, it is the seductive truth!!!
  My Predictions:
There will be a lot of talking points, especially when it comes to the intimacy elements of the film.
It will perform very well at the box office, mostly because the word of mouth from the people who will watch it on the release date.
It will change and revolutionize the South African film industry because of a new standard it has set, by being extremely sexy, but not trashy at all.
