Popping on here after how many years (?) because I am unliving for the rise of gay ghost characters right now. Going to be working on a fun lil zine project covering undead queers in popular culture: DM me for details and/or contributions.

Obsessed with how death permeates this story. It literally starts with the dying seagulls! The very fabric of the characters's lives is interwoven with mortality and the fragility of life; Javi who almost died in childbirth, Olivia's family's connection to the local morgue/funeral home, Mario's near-death experiences (always related to a car), Bea's and Javi's deceased mothers who tried to escape and died on the same day, Zeta's mom having an illness that will almost certainly lead to death since they can't get her medicine/proper treatment, etc. And the kids being dressed as zombies during the party at Paraiso… Even before their physical deaths, they are already figuratively dead. And they're locked in a cycle of tragedy, similar to the Undead. The Undead are not physically dead and they're not truly alive either, they're surrounded by death, AND they're bringers of death. Alvaro's parents refusing to stay so they don't have to see their children die, but they always adopt a new kid and suffer their loss, even choosing to kill before dying themselves. Marta having to kill the love of her life, etc. They can't escape death, which is what they want to do the most. The cyclical nature of the Undead's sacrificial rituals every three years echoes the repetitive nature of their plight, trapped in an inescapable loop where no matter how powerful they are, they always need to return and do the ritual, their inherent vulnerability palpable even in their seemingly immortal state.
Javi steps forward to take matters into his own hands as the investigation on the disappearance of the three young girls takes a wrong turn, and others start saying the girls are dead. That's the catalyst, he refuses to believe this and he and his friends are caught in a perpetual struggle against forces beyond their control, highlighting the fragility and limitations of human existence and THEN, tragically, they fucking meet an untimely demise early on in their quest to unravel the enigma. Yet, their journey does not end there. Nope. Transformed into ghosts, they continue their pursuit of justice, driven by friendship, and aiming to save the captured girls and thwart the bad guys. Despite their best efforts, Javi and his friends face immense losses along the way, testing their resolve and resilience. Like damn, there are worse things than dying and victory always comes at a heavy price, in both seasons!!!!!
Additionally, by breaking the one-way passage doors, they inadvertently disrupt the delicate balance between the realms of the living and the dead. The consequences of their choices reverberate beyond their immediate circumstances, the shattered spirit doors and the opening of a window to the time dimension leave them with limited access to the afterlife and expose them to the dangers of the Abyss and fucking time rifts. They don't have Javi anymore and they have to ponder on the fragile nature of their newfound existence. Quino, having previously met a horrifying fate in the Abyss, a nightmarish realm, serves as a chilling reminder of the consequences that await because of the irreversible damage caused by their actions.
Irreversible because while the ending of Paraiso offers a glimmer of hope and a momentary reprieve, the characters' triumph remains tenuous, as the bad guys were not permanently vanquished, and the shattered spirit doors remain unrepaired. Their existence hangs on a fragile thread, poised to be snuffed out and cast into another time vortex or a time loop. They will probably need to face the Undeads again, the Marquis hasn't died, so they haven't died. There's also this inescapability of destiny, like Javi's fate as the Chosen One or Olivia's fate taking after her grandma, and it's even stronger with the time dimension being outta whack now. We had seen that everything Javi tried to do led to the same outcome, or an even worse one, over and over again, but since he ultimately reshaped the past maybe he also rewrote their collective destinies.
Still, from my understanding they didn't close the time window, so the timeline where they died in S1 would continue to exist alongside the altered timeline created by Javi's journey through the time rift. They may have rewritten their collective destinies to some extent but they'd still be striving to find a resolution that brings lasting peace. It's like some battles cannot be definitively won, and the presence of evil can persist, waiting for another opportunity to manifest and it's been like this long before the kids were born. Death was a specter present from the past. But even in the face of an uncertain and inherently flawed world full of adversity, the pursuit of hope and resolution are constant, and even if ultimate victory remains elusive, they still find solace in their resilience, their courage, and the bonds of unbreakable friendship they forged along the way
"And the dead here we have a great time among colored flowers And on Fridays and such If there is no plan in the pit we get dressed and go out"

So, I watched Paraiso (Paradise) on HBO Max and... IDK, it's not bad? The pacing is weird and the mystery is presented in a kinda clumsy way, but... Y'know eventually the characters grow on you? The main Goonies squad is pretty cute. There's one kid who maybe leans on the ugly cry too hard, but, y'know he is a kid so I'm willing to give him a pass. Otherwise the acting is ok, again a little melodramatic at times and the mystery isn't super compelling, but you feel enough sympathy for the characters that you can get yourself through the series. It's not that long and it's only one season. There's nothing too extreme in terms of violence or gore, maybe stay away if you're sensitive to su*cide or su*icidal imagery/attempts or fire deaths or drowning. Or if mentions of child abuse or light depictions of bullying or dead kids are a trigger for you. It's more intense than Julie and the Phantoms, but less intense than Stranger Things. It doesn't curse much or have too much nudity, just a couple of nipples here and there and then a bunch of butts in one scene. (I'm guessing the nipples are most of the reason it got a TV MA rating, it's really not that intense.)
One thing that pooped out at me was that it weirdly kept interrupting kisses between characters? Like 3 or 4 times? But the sad lesbians got a grope and smooch and 2 of the sad dads get a CPR smooch? I won't spoil the last kiss, but yeah. A lot of interruptions. Anyways, it was weird, but not offensive.
Mainly it's just about three girls who go missing and one girl's younger sibling and his friends searching for them. Sandra is one of the girls that disappears, Javi is her little brother, Quino and Alvaro are his two best friends, Bea is the girl he likes, Olivia is her best friend and Zeta is sort of the bully turned reluctant squad member of the group.
For a stranger things comparison : Javi = Mike, Sandra = Nancy, Alvaro = Will, Quino = Dustin, Zeta = Steve, Bea = Max, Olivia = Lucas and everyone else is just sort of there.
There are villains, but they're less menacing and more inconvenient? There are a couple of characters with mobility issues, 2 sad lesbians, one of whom is a little person, 2 sad gay boys, one of whom starts the story a bit homophobic (yes, it is that trope), a character with diabetes.... I can't think of anything else, but yeah, it was okay. No black characters though and the only asian is a villain, so if that's a dealbreaker for you, well... You're right. That does suck.
Also, in order to watch it in the original Spanish, I had to go to my TV settings to change the audio because HBO Max wouldn't let me? But once I had it set it was fine. Still weird though.
Overall : a 7/10 Spanish Stranger Things that tries and misses the mark a bit, but it is more queer and I can only approve. An okay series that I may watch again. Don't go for a compelling or intelligable mystery, the lovable squad is all you're gonna get.

Upcoming project. It’s suppose to be a Stranger Things vibe type of show.
