Child of Lightning

A.k.a me giving Jason a backstory and a flimsy attemt at explaining what is up with Jasons powers and why he isn't as powerful as the rest of the children of the big three.

Part 1/3

The first time he uses his powers Jason is two years old. Lia only laughs when the lightning makes her hair stick out. His mother lies in her bed and sleeps. A strange smell is in the flat.

"That's our little secret, Jason, yes?", she says and dishelves his hair.

He doesn't understand her and struggles free of her arms. He doesn't like it when she does that. Lia smiles and hugs him again. His hair crackles when it meets her shirt.

He is two years old and it is cold and dark and he is afraid. The animal before him looks like a giant dog and he shudders, but even the great goddess Lupa shies away from his lightning. He has to keep back the sparks. Only then he is allowed to snuggle into her soft, warm fur. Strange. Lia was never afraid of the lightning.

He is three and the lightning can't hurt him. The other campers look at him with awe in their eyes. They lead him into a big building and he has to stretch out his arm. It burns. He nearly can't hold back the tears. But the picture of the eagle is really beautiful. Admiring, he traces the lines on his arm. He doesn't really notice when the others proclaim: " Ave Jason Grace, son of Jupiter!"

He is three and kneels beside the unmoving body of the woman who he is staying with. But even she doesn't want to tell him where Lia and his mother are. He was impatient and the sparks appeared. He doesn't understand why she is lying on the floor and sleeping. The bed is so much softer. The lightning still dances over his skin.

It is the first time his powers hurt someone, but he is too young to really understand it. He only shakes uselessly her shoulder.

"Wake up!"

He is five and it is the first time he loses control. He is frustrated when he has to repeat the steps again. It is so eays to call the lightning. Only when he calms down again can he see what he did. Julia is staring shocked at him, but she is unharmed. Hadrian cowers on the ground, arms protecting his head. It takes a long time befor the fear'll disappear from his eyes. Only now Jason begins to understand what he can do.

He is six and he and Hadrian are allowed to watch to official training od the legion. Both are excited when they sit at the side of the field. Little sparks jump over Jasons skin and the air around him crackles, but he keeps the lightning back inside. Enthusiasticly he tries to copy the movements of the legionnaires. Only Hadrian notices that the air follows his gestures.

He is seven and the training has started. Hadrian has become his best friend. They don't have to choose their cohort right now, but they know that they want to stay together. They're still on probatio. But Jadon can hear the whispers behind his back. First cohort, they say. Maybe even Praetor.

He doesn't want to become Praetor. He wants to learn new things and here he learns so much like nowhere before. He even forgot Lia for a while. But it is difficult to keep the lightning inside. He has to concentrate all the time. It would be ao easy to just let his powers loose.

He is eight and he nearly killed his Zenturio. The lightning still flashes over his skin, even as the storm has faded. The other recruits look at him with panic or horror in their faces. They are afraid of what he can do. Even Hadrian keeps his distance.

When the doctora finally arrive has the lightning stopped. While they desperately try to save Max' life, Jason makes a promise to himself. He won't ever let the winds and the lightning free again.

And he will never be free of the fear that crawled into his thoughts on this day.

He is nine and for nearly a year he hasn't had an accident. But even that can't make up for Hadrians hurt look when he chooses the fifth cohort. His friend joins the second cohort but Jason can't. He doesn't want the constant looks of the whole camp, silently judging him. Damning or praising him because of his father or his abilities or even both. He wants to achieve something by himself. And if he is honest with himself: He doesn't believe that he's earned a place up there with the others.

Regardless, he does what he can. He is always in control of his powers, but on some days the winds rampage inside him and the lightning slowly burns him to ash. It hurts, but it doesn't matter. It's only him.
