This is my first time seeing a Pale Green Assassin Bug! Apparently, they often wait on leaves to ambush passing insects. They also set sticky traps 🕸

First post! Hey all! I'm an artist and biology student trying to find some way to blend my two interests together! To christen this blog, here's some sketches I've done a while back!

juice box: a Zelus luridus assassin bug drinks the life out of a little parasitoid wasp.
Tumblr media
the first legs in Zelus and some other assassin bugs are covered in glue-tipped hairs, which help hold onto tiny, fast moving prey. other species—I think a Southeast Asian genus—collect sticky tree sap and apply it to their legs!

Helloooo, could I please get an ID for these little cuties? All found in northeast Ohio!
I’m not sure if the shield bug on the left is a nymph or not, but I’m pretty sure the other two are ^^
Ty in advance, love your blog sm!! <3
Insect IDs - NE OH, USA:
The top photo is the nymph of a stink bug, probably Brown Stink Bug (Euschistus servus), family Pentatomidae.
The 2nd photo is the nymph of a Left-footed Bug (Leptoglossus sp.), family Coreidae.
The bottom photo looks like the nymph of the Pale Green Assassin Bug (Zelus luridus), family Reduviidae.

A gorgeous adult Reduvius personatus I collected recently.

A few adult Zelus luridus spotted locally.

And, my absolute favorite, a male adult Arilus cristatus I collected while passing through Virginia. What's your favorite assassin bug?
What an excellent collection of assassin bugs! Wheel bugs are definitely in my top five just because I love their shape. Not sure I could choose a favorite but I'm a big fan of ambush bugs and kissing bugs, despite the latter being vectors for disease. Also thread-legged bugs in Emesinae!

ID of this little critter? Outside and in Minnesota. Front legs were kinda raised when sitting still and it's eyes were even brighter in person.

A Pale Green Assassin Bug almost gets carried away by a sudden breeze. This is the most common kind of Sundew Assassin Bug in North America, although the first time I have noticed one. They are very tiny guys, though.
