Contemporary Art vs Contemporary Design
Contemporary means belonging to or occurring in the present.
In its most basic sense, the term contemporary art refers to art—namely, painting, sculpture, photography, installation, performance, and video art—produced today. Though seemingly simple, the details surrounding this definition are often a bit fuzzy, as different individuals' interpretations of “today” may widely and wildly vary. Therefore, the exact starting point of the genre is still debated; however, many art historians consider the late 1960s (the end of modern art, or modernism) to be an adequate estimate. Copper clock by Patrick Palcic uses perfume to tell time
Perfume leaks at hourly intervals onto the copper face of this clock by German designer Patrick Palcic, which was presented at this year's IMM Cologne.
Palcic created the clock, named Es Liegt was in Der Luft – or There Is Something in the Air – to offer an alternative way to tell the time.
"The olfactory clock allows the user to experience the passage of time in a different way," Palcic told Dezeen. "Instead of the time being read, as with other timepieces, it hangs in the air and is inhaled."
Instead of hands, 12 small holes are punctured around the perimeter. Each hour is assigned a different fragrance, which is in the mechanism behind the clock face.
The copper dish turns slowly, so that its perforations hit 12 o'clock at hourly intervals, triggering a drop of essence to be released.
The perfume trickles down the copper face, which is heated up to cause the scent to evaporate. It also it oxidises the metal, leaving lighter markings on the surface.
"From the uppermost hole, at 12 o'clock, the first liquid flows over the copper plate and leaves a trace on the surface," the designer explained. "The shell heats up and the first essence floats in the air."
"The expiration repeats itself an hour later, only the plate is advanced by a hole," he continued. "The process starts from the beginning."
Es Liegt was in Der Luft is one of a number of atypical clocks. Among them is Breaded Escalope's touch-responsive clock that tells the time with shadows, while Zelf Koelman's Ferrolic clock uses magnetic ferrofluid to tell the time.

This Rorschach Alarm Clock Is Filled With Ferromagnetic "Creatures"
Ferrolic by designer Zelf Koelman uses ferromagnetic fluid to make your alarm clock into a work of bedside art.If we're not using our smartphones, most of us have alarm clocks counting down those precious minutes of remaining sleep using either analog dials or LED displays. But designer Zelf Koelman of the Eindhoven University of Technology has created a new kind of alarm clock, one where the time bubbles up from the bottom like a monochrome lava lamp.
The Ferrolic is an alarm clock which uses ferrofluids—a liquid that is highly sensitive to magnetic fields—not just to show the time, but to display a sort of ambient, Rorschach art. Koelman calls these ferrofluid bubbles 'Ferrolic creatures,' and on the clock's website, describes how it works:
In the front, the display has a basin comparable to an aquarium in which Ferro Fluid can move freely. Behind the scenes powerful electromagnets enable Ferollic to influence the fluid’s shape, to pick it up and move it around. Both modules, the basin and the electronics, sit secure in an aluminum frame.
Ferrolic is also "hackable," so new information and animations can be created and transmitted via a web app that connects to the clock. "In this way users can assign "the creatures" to display time, text, shapes and transitions," Koelman writes.
The finished product isn't just a timepiece; it's a mesmerizing piece of side table art. Only 24 gave been made so far, and they are quite expensive—around $8,300 a piece. But if you want a Ferrolic clock of your own, you might be in luck: the official website hints that a Kickstarter for the device might be down the road. Consider my ferrofluid obsessed fingers crossed.

Ferrolic by Zelf Koelman
Ferrolic is an alarm clock using ferrofluid, a colloidal substance capable of changing states of matter in the presence of a magnetic field. The substance’s unpredictable quality fascinated Koelman, who likened its movement to that of “living creatures.”

Ferrolic – Ein ferrofluides Display
Ferrolic – Ein ferrofluides Display
