Puppet Project - Research

My puppet was based off the Snowboarder Zeb Powell, as winter sports is something I have an interest in and is something I thought would provide interesting opportunities for movement in animation.

Winter sport clothes tend to feature bright colours and bold designs and I thought this would be something interesting to emulate.

Although I started off research with a snowboarder, I looked at snowboarding culture as a whole as well as skateboarding culture. Snowboarding was seen as a rebellious response to the dominant skiing culture when it arose, and the subculture are embraced some elements from punk amd hip hop subcultures. In my research I found parallels between skateboarding and snowboarding subcultures.

I decided to make the puppet a skate boarder rather than a snowboarder because of some shared qualities between the two sports/ subcultures. I also thought that skateboarding would be more flexible and better to work with in terms of what set design and animation can be made for it.

X Games Recap

The X Games is a global competition held in the United States in Aspen, Colorado, in the Buttermilk slopes. Buttermilk holds some of the world's best obstacles and ramps for athletes who travel from all over the globe. One of the most well known and talented men’s snowboard athletes, Zeb Powell, from North Carolina, shows his practice tips and his advice for competing in such a strenuous environment. Alongside fellow athletes, Zeb and many others push and encourage the limits of each other to get outside their comfort zone and go beyond the current limits and records set by athletes of the past. After competing last January, Zeb and many others are back to training and practicing in the offseason to show out for the next X Games event next January.

Zeb Powell (born on January 18, 2000[1]) is an American professional snowboarder based out of North Carolina. Zeb Powell is best known for his unforgivingly aggressive style that has won him gold[2] in the 2020 XGames Knuckle Huck. Being the first black snowboarder to win gold in XGames history[3] Zeb takes it upon himself to push for more diversity in the sport[4] by partnering with Hoods to Woods[5] an organization aiming to help the melanated youth have a chance to have a place in snowboarding.
