Fifth World Festival of Youth and Students Warsaw, Poland 1955
The young blood and brunette haired women in the 5th World Festival of Youth and Students each wore the Picasso Peace designed for the 1951 Berlin Youth Festival as shown in the promotional posters above. The first day of stamp issue letters also depicted Picasso's peace doves in flights. The last poster again shows the recurring theme of the world's different races coming together with the peaceful dove front and center.
The 5th World Festival of Youth and Students was held in Warsaw from 31 July to 15 August 1955. The festival was meant to prove the superiority of socialism over capitalism. Youth from around the world gathered in Warsaw – coming from capitalist countries and developing nations. It was an opportunity for them to become acquainted with life behind the Iron Curtain, and for Varsovians it was a chance to meet people from countries not accessible to the citizens of Poland under communism. For the carefully selected delegation from the USSR and countries of people’s democracies, the festival was evidence that it was possible to have fun outside of official rituals. Varsovians and sight-seers from all over Poland were exposed to the brightly coloured clothes and relaxed lifestyles of the visitors. The festival contributed greatly to the events of October 1956. The Fifth World Festival of Youth and Students (WFYS) was held in 1955, in Warsaw, the capital of the then People's Republic of Poland.
AUGUST WIND FROM THE WEST: FIRST HAND MEMORIES OF THE WARSAW YOUTH FESTIVAL Written by Zenon Strözyk-Stulginska, Aug 24, 2011
What was this event for the 5th World Youth and Student Festival in Warsaw in August 1955! It was opened by 100,000 participants from Poland on the crown of the newly devoted stadium of the 10th anniversary and thousands of delegates from all over the world marching on the turf.
And then hundreds of artistic, sports and social events, in joyful multilingual buzz for two weeks, continuously at unimaginable, sunny weather today. From cities around the country every three days, special train sets departed, bringing new groups of participants of the Festival.
A tent city as well as local stages were created on the Mokotowskie Field. You could use trucks to move to other parts of the city. And something was happening in everybody. All Warsaw danced, sang, clapped, discussed peace, friendship, brotherhood.
The megaphones were wailing "about the first gray hair on your temple" or they were calling: avanti popolo or Polish “forward youth of the world”, because it was supposed to be a propaganda party with the band's ruffian triumphant in the end.
I lived in a sanitary tent in Warsaw and after three days off I took my team back to Krakow. Here I came home for a moment, and again to Warsaw for three days of dancing, discussion and observation. Because looking at that youth, we realized that it could be different.
Unfortunately, to make it happen, we had to wait for more "gray hair at the temple*, new August, then June. And the material souvenir of those events is a handkerchief with doves, the same as all the guests of the Festival brought home about their homes. The ID card is colorful as well as the festival itself.

Warsaw Photo Days 2017: POST SOVIETICUS
17.11-15.12.2017
On November 17, Warsaw Photo Days festival organized by Warsaw Association of Polish Art Photographers (OW ZPAF) will open under the theme POST SOVIETICUS. Sixteen exhibitions presenting the works of forty two authors will be shown in Warsaw galleries.
The theme of this year's edition of the festival has been formulated for the presented photographic projects to serve as an artistic reference to the history and modernity of the post-Soviet countries. The traces of the past in both the people and places turned out to be an interesting area for artistic expression, but also an opportunity to present important historical photographs depicting the shape of the past world.
