Cal and Xizaya?
VISUAL ATTRACTIVENESS: 💗💗💗💗💗
Cal loves Xizaya’s aesthetic. She adores her wardrobe, and her favourite physical features are probably Zaya’s hair of tattoos.
FRIENDSHIP LEVEL: 💗💗💗💗
They need to talk about some more things… Cal has a lot she feels more comfortable now telling Xizaya about, but she’s not sure the time/place to bring them up.
SEXUAL DESIRE: 💗💗💗💗💗
She wants to [REDACTED] zayas [DATA EXPUNGED]
ROMANTIC INTENT: 💗💗💗💗
They need to talk about what kind of relationship they have… Since they’re mutually on the same terms that they aren’t pitch anymore, she’s not sure if she’s courting zaya pale or flushed.

ffxivwrite2021 #25: silver lining
⮞ lunya, haurchefant, and winduphaurchefant's reese, with a mention of fistsoflightning's zaya. 1116 words. ⮞ post-dragonsong war and ye olde canon divergence (affectionate). ⮞ sometimes, you need to remember why you walk the road you're on.
silver lining: an advantage that comes from a difficult or unpleasant situation.
Tick, tock, tick, tock.
Lunya wondered if maybe Haurchefant resented her.
Scuffing the sides of her boots together as she swung her legs back and forth, she twisted a lock of her hair in a thick loop around her finger and waited. Tick, tock went the chronometer on the table. Her hair was finally back to the length it'd been before the Banquet, but even though that was the same it seemed that nothing else would be. Tick, tock. The mug of cocoa at her side was getting cold despite her proximity to the fireplace—how long had it been already?
Tick, tock, tick, tock.
The door at the end of the hall swung open.
Reese's expression was as it always was—thick brows furrowed in worry, her smile weak—but she wore full armor rather than a winter robe, and a greatsword rested in the place of her old staff. Whenever it was that she and Hanami had decided on their wardrobe and weapon changes, Lunya did not know—there was a lot you could miss when you were in an aether-induced coma to save one of your friends. Said friend was following Reese into the room; Haurchefant, no longer wearing the mail of House Fortemps, seemed out of sorts in a heavy tunic and leather boots, leaning on a wooden cane nearly identical to his father's. They seemed to be arguing over whether or not he had to wear a coat for their little expedition.
"I will not freeze, my dear," he insisted to Reese, gripping his cane with a hint of impatience that looked utterly foreign to the most jovial man Lunya had ever met. "Ser Zephirin did not manage to take that much from me."
"Fine," Reese acquiesced, though she looked out the window to the thick layer of snow and the darkness of the sky with a look of doubt. "But you are still riding the chocobo."
Lunya trailed behind them in silence as they left the intercessory, her cold hot chocolate left behind for an even colder night. A knight came forth with a chocobo black as midnight, stark against the freshly fallen snow on the ground. Haurchefant waved both him and Reese off when they made to help him on; this was one part of his dignity he would not forfeit, even though Lunya had taken so much of it from him already.
A knight lives to serve, he had told his father, back when they were assembling a rescue mission for Ser Aymeric, to aid those in need.
When they'd both woken up long after that sundown in the Vault with stardust lingering on their skin and the faint buzz of an aetherial link still between them, the chirurgeon who was summoned to tend to them had shaken her head.
"You are alive, my lord," she told Haurchefant when he meant to call for his sword and armor, even as Lord Edmont had knelt by their bedsides and wept, "But your injuries are not those that will mend in a week of rest. I cannot, in good conscience, allow you to continue your duties."
"Then when—?"
Haurchefant had not looked her in the eye since then. He had not looked at much of anything, really, when even sitting for paperwork or on a bench to watch the knights train put him in enough pain for tears for months.
I'm sorry, Lunya wanted to shout as the chocobo ambled out of the camp with a merry kweh! that did not fit the somber atmosphere that lingered in the camp. But at least you're alive. At least you're still here.
But maybe that shouldn't have been her choice to make. Maybe she was too weak to use the spell she did. Maybe she was too foolish.
"There is no greater calling for a knight than to save the life of his fellow man."
But that much was bullshit. She robbed him of his dreams but she did not take a son's corpse home to his father. There was no funeral to be had, no memorial to consecrate, no lover to say goodbye to. Knights and their honor and duty be damned, she would suffer no sacrifices being taken before her eyes without a fight, and certainly not when that fellow man was in love with him.
(She'd seen enough heartbreaking farewells for one lifetime.)
The lights of Ishgard twinkled against the open sky like golden stars when they arrived at the tip of Providence Point, where the mountainous cliff dropped into nothingness and the towering image of the Holy See glowed on the horizon line. Lunya thought about turning back—Reese hadn't exactly told her why she needed to come with them, just that it was important, and now she was just playing third wheel in awkward silence. If they had to be so quiet they could have at least invited Zaya along—not that Zaya was doing any better emotionally these days. Not since they braved the Antitower.
Her friends were starting to fall apart, one by one, it seemed. She wondered when her turn would be, or if she was there already.
"I fear I have created a misunderstanding," Haurchefant said, watching the golden lights.
At first, Lunya thought he was addressing Reese. But Reese had led the chocobo to a cleared patch of grass to graze, and when she looked Haurchefant was staring right at her.
"I have been disheartened since I awoke," he admitted, hand tight around his cane and not standing as tall as he once did. "I did not know what to do when I was released from my duties with a certainty of no return. I still do not know. But—and I promise this—full glad am I to be alive. To see my father shed tears for me that I had never seen before. For my brothers to call me theirs after a lifetime of estrangement. To wake up to tales of my dearest friends saving the very city I devoted my life to." When Reese returned, she twined an arm around him and carefully traced around the damaged part of his spine. "So I could see my beloved's smile once again. I did not take these things for granted before, but I cherish them now more than ever."
I forgive you, Haurchefant's smile said, bright like the lights of the city in the distance. Thank you.
"That's good," Lunya said, and she certainly did not cry when both of her friends knelt in the snow and opened their arms to her. She didn't cry at all on that peak as she embraced them both as carefully as she could, suddenly a lot less cold that night. "That's good."

Jessica Jones - ‘A.K.A. Sorry Face’ Review
Tumblr media
"Ill come down when you’re ready for my official statement. 'Til then, I’ll be drunk."
Man, this season is really clipping along now that things are moving.
I have to admit, I expected Erik's rescue to take longer. Like, at least until next episode. And yet we clipped right through it here and landed soundly on the moral dilemma on the other side.
But I'm getting ahead of myself, let's start at the beginning.
When last we saw our hero, she and Trish had tracked down Sallinger's 'big tanker of body parts.' Jessica had prudently gotten Trish out of the area in order to preserve her anonymity vis a vis the local serial killer set. This all works, and I'm really enjoying how they're playing things as regards Jessica being the voice of reason who understands what portions of the system you have to work with versus Trish being chock full of newly-empowered vigilante enthusiasm. That's a thread which continues throughout this episode and I suspect is going to develop in a lot of big and unexpected ways over the rest of the season. (No spoilers, I haven't watched anything past 'Sorry Face' for the sake of not influencing my review.)
I do, however, have some questions about the logistics of the setup. Does Sallinger's family own the railyard or something? Because otherwise it's a little unusual that a tanker car in that good of condition is just hanging out uninspected and full of clever traps for the passing superhero. Those things aren't cheap, and generally aren't left unaccounted for where the general public can get to them.
Speaking of Sallinger, we got a lot of answers this episode regarding what his deal is. Apparently he has some sort of profound inferiority complex regarding his deceased brother and views anyone with super powers as having 'cheated' at becoming a better person, whereas he views himself as having 'earned' being seen as a superior person due to his intellect and all of the degrees he's worked for. OK, I'll buy that, and is anyone not assuming that he killed his brother himself? What is a little vague at this stage is what his game plan with victims typically is when they aren't superpowered. Clearly he doesn't exclusively hunt people with super powers, since Erik's having them was genuinely a surprise to him. Prior to finding that out his stated goal was to photograph 'the moment (Erik) realized his true worth,' whatever on Earth that might mean.
Is it just about demeaning people and making them feel worthless in order to feel superior about himself? Are the photographs a reminder of how bad his victims felt about themselves at that moment? Why does he appear to keep both the photographs and the body parts as trophies in separate locations? That's a little unusual for a serial killer. There are still a lot of questions about Sallinger waiting to be answered.
And I adored the detail that it was Chef Casper kissing him that freaked him out enough to leave without finishing that particular kill. That was a fascinating and humanizing detail.
Jessica once again proves that she's actually a really good PI by tracking down Erik in a completely believable way, allowing for the usual comic book plotting level of coincidence curve. But the moments when I realized why I love this character so much were three specific instances where she had absolutely no time for playing games. First when she was straightforward with Malcolm about Erik reading him as about a three on the evil scale. She didn't attempt to control his choices or how he responded to that information, but she was shooting straight from the hip on the 'you're headed down a dark path and you should be aware of that' conversation.
The second instance was of course when she had absolutely zero spare seconds for trying to help Trish hide the fact that she has super powers from her mother. Throwing her out of the window was a little on the extreme side, but it certainly brought everybody up to the same point in the conversation very, very quickly. Nice touch that Trish was wearing the traditional Hellcat color scheme for the conversation by the way; someone in wardrobe has a puckish sense of humor.
And third and lastly is the moment in the opening voiceover where Jessica admits to herself, just for a moment, that she wants to be a hero. That finding the bodies isn't just what her mother would want, it's what a hero would want. She's slowly allowing herself to view herself as heroic, and that's a big step.
Other things that were great about this one include how right Malcolm was about the correct way to handle Berry. He was absolutely right that if she didn't choose to come on her own that she would never stay. He then loses points for taking the beating of Gor way too far and then cheating on Zaya.  Berry is a fairly toxic person. There's no chance that 'causing chaos in Malcolm's relationship' wasn't at least a part of why she propositioned him.
And hey, speaking of toxic relationship interference, everything about the exchange between Jeri and Kith's son Laurent was riveting and I love how complicated and ugly the show allowed both of them to be while still keeping both of them totally relatable and pitiable.
So, Sallinger is going to be released from custody and Erik won't testify against him because that would involve a year in prison, which considering his superpower is a non-starter option. That's not un-understandable, if that's a word. Couldn't Trish testify, though? Or Chef Casper? I hope they address those questions.
Bits and Pieces:
- I used to maintain at least a small amount of empathy for Dorothy, controlling though she was. That's all gone now after the completely toxic way she responded to Trish having powers. She made it all about herself in the most damaging and hurtful way possible, and I honestly hope that she's Sallinger's next victim.
- We're all wondering how much Zaya had to do with Rand Corp leaving Jeri's firm, right? We saw her on her way to go and deal with them and the next thing we hear Rand has jumped ship. That can't be a coincidence.
- How nice to see Benowitz again and see how well he's doing now that he's out of the closet. His secret excursions to 'The Chocolate Bar' were part of the episode 'A.K.A. Ain't We Got Fun,' which was the one I reviewed during last season's round robin reviews. As a result, I'm feeling a little proprietorial about Benowitz.
- The last couple of reviews have mentioned a little uncertainty about what Jeri wants from Kith, exactly. It seems pretty clear to me that what she wants is to not die alone and she doesn't have enough time to start from scratch with a new relationship so she's taking whatever steps she has to to re-establish her relationship with Kith as the quickest route to having someone with her. This sort of implies A: that Jeri is a sociopath, and B: I may be as well.
- Sallinger's father stabbed him in the chest at a funeral luncheon? You know we're going to get more of that story.
- Jessica's reaction when Dorothy made the crack about there being better lesbians out there for Trish was priceless.
- I'm sorry, Casper, you seem like a nice guy and a decent chef. But serving a steak medium well is totally valid grounds for violent murder.
- Erik and Trish have a surprisingly fun dynamic. I hope we get more of them together.
- Jeri's interest has been piqued regarding the trainyard bodies. I wonder where that's going.
- Sallinger said 'Do you see?' to Erik at one point in the torture. That was clearly a Red Dragon shout out, right?

Quotes:
Malcolm: "A serial killer kidnapped your brother." Berry: "What?" Malcolm: "Erik might already be dead. Guess who’s next."
Jessica: "You should be scared. And worried. And pessimistic."
Dorothy: "There are much better lesbians out there."
Jessica: "I assumed that you had facial recognition software, being that you’re so well funded these days."
Dorothy: "My problem with Jessica isn’t her powers, it’s that she’s rude, violent and ungrateful."
Sallinger: "It’s me. You’re allergic to me."
Tumblr media
A super fun episode that really got the plot clipping along at a nice pace and ended somewhere different from where I expected.
Eight out of ten reasons to be scared. And worried. And pessimistic.

Prepa, ¿Qué Actitud?
Every year during the first week of August, thousands of students that were admitted to the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez flood the campus for orientation with expectation in their hearts and wonder in their eyes; they take in the campus and all the activities volunteers and workers planned for them that await. Among these activities, Prepa, ¿Qué Actitud? is a parodic play that is held on the first night at the college’s Figueroa Chapel amphitheater. As the line fills with eager first year students, it curves around the building into the school’s inner courtyard. The stakes are high on opening night. However, opening night is just the end when it comes to the preparation of an activity like this.
Tumblr media
Figure 1. Soul Stars Episode III. (Reyes).
Prepa, ¿Qué Actitud? started as a simple activity by the Jóvenes Cristianos del Parque’s, one of the university’s Christian associations, where members could bring friends to watch them perform in comedic skits (Rivera). The purpose was to introduce people to Christ through laughter and fun (Rivera). It began with Jaime Zayas in 1998, a former UPRM alumni who currently owns a circus, with a love for theater and the performing arts. According to Rivera, Jaime never imagined that this small project would transform into the production it now is. With time, this simple idea developed until it came to a peak during one particular orientation week. Members of the association performed a small informal play at the university’s central courtyard for incoming students (Rivera). It was so successful that the university’s administration allowed the group to perform at Figueroa Chapel amphitheater, and officially made it part of the orientation week's program to implement new and diverse activities with a positive message (Rivera). The initiative has withstood the test of time, carefree of the fluctuating audience, and has maintained its original concept: a space where incoming students can laugh and enjoy sane comedy, all while receiving an impactful and unchanging message: that Jesus loves them and that they are never alone, regardless of the trials they may face in the upcoming chapters of their lives.
Tumblr media
Figure 2. Backstage (Montañez).
All this would be impossible without an amazing body of volunteers that support and work tirelessly to bring this project to life. The process begins in January, when the script writers are selected and the topic is hashed out, during and after meetings and brainstorming sessions, where characters and storylines from the year’s most popular movies and current events are chosen. After that, with a story skeleton and tentative cast in mind, the writing process begins. Meanwhile, the association starts collecting money, in the well-anticipated Coin War, where male and female members compete against each other to collect the most coins and win that year’s war. Overall, it takes an average of five to six months for a team of full-time college students to write, and for members of the association to collect coins and bring the final vision to life.
Tumblr media
Figure 3. Team Effort (Maymí).
Eventually, June arrives and brings along rehearsals. The cast and all other working hands meet Monday through Friday, from 7 am to 5 pm, to weave together all the threads that compose this beloved activity. It takes a village composed of executive leaders, such as a director and assistant director, producer, actors, choreographers and songwriters, stagehands and carpenters, makeup artists and wardrobe confectioners, ushers, as well as lighting, sound and audiovisual technicians. All jobs are taken up by members of the association who may have never found themselves in such an arduous setting before but are willing to take up the demanding mantle for this labor of love to come alive. The art of working in tandem creates friendships and family-like bonds among the team and enables members of the association to not only become indispensable to each other, but to also experience Christ. It also propels them to put their faith in action from a peculiar perspective.
Tumblr media
Figure 4. Curtains Rise (Reyes).
Sooner than expected, opening night arrives and there is a flurry of activity in the amphitheater’s backstage to make everything as perfect as possible for the night’s show. Actors oscillate between the dressing rooms and the main stage, all in different stages of costume and make-up, practicing their lines and positions one last time to ensure that when the moment comes, it will be their best and most accurate portrayal of their role. Stagehands verify that all the scenography and every single prop is in its right place backstage, and available when the moment comes. Light, sound, and audiovisual technicians verify that everything is in order one last time. One hour before show time, all the activity comes to a halt. Every single person that sacrificed their summer gets together on stage and looks at their comrades straight in the eyes. The anticipation is visible in their faces, the uncertainty of how this night will play out is heavy in their hearts, but above all they have a conviction that this project is bigger than singular individuals and even a collective body, which strengthens their resolve to see this done right until the very end. With that in mind, the group prays together for the outcome, for themselves and all the sacrifice, but most importantly, for the incoming students who unknowingly will receive the greatest good news story ever told. Once that important part is done, they all take their positions backstage, the curtains rise, and the show begins.

Hello universe, it is I once again! I know this page promised book reviews and those are coming, fo’ sho’. But while that happens, here is another one of my essays for my expository writing class (Ingl 3231) with Dr. Griggs. This one is on an activity that goes on every year in my campus, which I have had the privilege being part of, and which I simply adore. I hope you enjoy readiang as much as I did writing!
