Yknow the more I think about it, Zariba probably was left with a lingering injury after his squad died and that’s part of the reason he got reassigned.
It’s not super serious but he still needs a cane or brace when he’s walking/running around.

While he’s not technically in the fleet anymore, Zariba “Fadestep” Corsac is an ex-special ops troll that was honorably discharged after he was the only member of his team to make it out alive of a mission that went sideways. He actually wasn’t supposed to be discharged but his commander, Overseer Amrija Raktas, pulled some strings and got him the hell out of there because he was a complete fucking mess.
Zariba originally wanted to become a medic in the fleet and not actually do much fighting because he’s a pretty pacifistic person, but because he didn’t have any formal medical training beforehand and scored so friggin well in other areas, they threw him into special ops. With the added genetic bonus of his bloodline having a rapid Wolverine-esque healing factor due to mutated rainbowdrinker genes, he didn’t even have the option to bail out via death without getting really complicated in how he offed himself. He became terrifyingly good at his job mostly out of spite and made a point to specialize as a sniper, as this at least allowed him to kill people quickly and almost painlessly.
Still, he kept to his more arcane roots (mostly) in secret, helped by Amrija because the two of them have known each other since childhood and go way, way back. When higher command wasn’t snooping around and certain monitoring devices “malfunctioned,” Zariba was in the med bay preforming healing spells and using transmutation magic on blood donations he made to turn them into the right color or on transfusions that weren’t close enough to a patient’s blood hue to be accepted by their immune system. This magic no one outside his team knew about, though the fleet was aware of Zariba knowing another form of magic.
While the Empire had him marked down as a magic user, they held off on killing him since what he used actually helped him in his job and he couldn’t really use it to run away. Shade-walking or shadow-stepping is what he utilized, which is a short range form of planes-walking that allows the user to travel short distances while hidden from most kids of detection. While this initially came up as a problem, his higher ups realized he couldn’t maintain the state for long periods of time nor long distances, so they instead gave Zariba a tattoo that had a bunch of tracking nanobots in the ink. After that they left him to give jumpscares to his targets and generally just be a sneaky bastard.
His shade-walking saved his hide when the mission he was sent to complete with the rest of his team ended up going haywire and falling apart. They’d been tasked with uprooting a small rebellion that had established itself on a colony planet near the outer rim of the Empire, which had only gotten as large as it did due to being so far out in the galactic boondocks. Everything started off fine and they were fairly close to killing some of the heads of the rebellion when an enemy hacker broke into their communications channel and started relaying all the information to their leaders. Zariba’s team had codes for stuff but it was just a variation of a standard Imperial military code and was translated pretty fast with only a few hiccups.
After that, shit started to spiral out of control. They managed to take out two of the rebel’s higher ups before they began getting picked off one by one. Zariba met up with a group of about half his original team and they tried to navigate back to their ship, but by the time they reached it the rebels had taken out the engines and compromised the navigational and communications systems. They were also smart enough to know any survivors would try heading back, so they popped out of hiding and killed the majority of the team before they could properly duck back.
Zariba was left with just 2 others and they realized they’d need to steal another ship to get off the planet and not die before Imperial reinforcements from the colony’s capital came in. One of them was shot after they freed the ship from the dock’s locking mechanisms and the other was overwhelmed while trying to keep rebels from getting into the ship while the engines powered up. Zariba shot the trolls that killed her but got his head slammed into the side of the airlock door and had shrapnel thrown at him by a psionic before it fully closed. While he got himself into the air he essentially cloaked the entire ship and made it blink a couple thousand feet up.
He didn’t stay to look for any other survivors and just booked it out of there and off the planet completely. Radioing into Amrija was like an act of congress and he nearly got shot down by an Imperial ship before yelling out his identification and sending them his team’s clearance information. Of course because he sounded like a trainwreck they didn’t let him keep flying and dragged him on-board, where he was quickly sent to their med bay. The ship’s commander went and got the entire story once Zariba was more coherent and contacted Amrija afterwards, who took her friend back to their outpost. Jackie Tinire put his entire tour on halt and nearly had a breakdown after he heard what had happened.
Overseer Amrija got the jadeblood an honorable discharge after he recovered and hasn’t really reassembled or rebuilt his team ever since. She blames herself for what happened and refuses to do more than the bare minimum required to keep her position and her outpost under her control. There’s just too much guilt and anxiety for her to justify rebuilding the team to herself. She’s scared that she’ll end up sending more trolls to just be eventually massacred, so she now spends most of her time tracking down the scraps of the rebel group that killed the trolls under her command and goes after them herself.

but they all said you died instantly they said it as if in you the grace to not linger like a tragedy in slow motion or a heartbreak set on pause no slow cause of death for us all to deal with
they said it as if it was a relief as if that’s what you would have wanted and I’ve seen machines push life into the bodies of people who would rather just go and I know that’s not something you would want and I’m not saying I know you better than most but I’m pretty fuckin’ sure you’d rather be alive
[wheezes and throws some Shane Koyczan verses up]
Zariba hurts me deeply, like all Corsacs do.
