News from Africa, 19 June
Hage Geingob will host Danish PM Mette Frederiksen and Dutch PM Mark Rutte today in Namibia. Green hydrogen will reportedly be among the subjects discussed.
Tumblr media
2. Namibia's proposed visa exemption for Chinese nationals is a bilateral agreement that would benefit both countries, according to China's ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping.
Some Namibian politicians have objected to the proposal, with opposition leader McHenry Venaani claiming it is a "hoodwinking process" for Chinese prisoners to come to the country, and aspiring presidential candidate Job Amupanda alleging that it involves a deal between the ruling party and China to garner support for next year's elections.
The proposed agreement's main goal is to attract Chinese tourists and help Namibia become competitive again after the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Namibia's minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security, Albert Kawana.
3. Angola and Zambia signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in information technology, including digital transformation, AI, and space technology.
The agreement includes the establishment of direct cross-border optical fibre backbone connectivity between the two countries, scheduled to happen this month.
The collaboration is expected to help improve the regulation of the Angolan and Zambian telecom markets and lead to improved coverage and quality of ICT services provided in both countries.
4. Namibia is embarking on a journey of digital transformation to modernize various aspects of the country's life.
The Department of Home Affairs, Immigration and Security recently announced the successful implementation of an online passport application system, a major step towards delivering home affairs government services through digital channels. Namibia is partnering with Estonia to bring government services online and gradually prepare citizens for the transformation ahead. The Vice Minister of ICT recognizes the importance of foreign direct investment (FDI) for African technology spaces, but stresses the need for a clear roadmap or strategy to ensure that solutions developed in Africa fit the lifestyle on the continent.
5. Nigeria has 71 million people living in extreme poverty and 133 million people are classified as multidimensionally poor, according to 2023 data from the World Poverty Clock and the National Bureau of Statistics.
6. The Bank of Namibia increased the repo rate to safeguard the dollar-rand peg and contain inflationary pressures, but this will severely impact consumers who rely on debt to survive.
The governor expressed empathy for people losing their homes due to rising debt costs, and urged the nation to find better solutions to keep more Namibians in their homes while maintaining financial stability.
7. The fighting in Sudan has caused a surge in refugees fleeing to South Sudan, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.
The UN has called for $253 million in funding to respond to the crisis, but donations have been slow to come in.
The lack of resources and funding has led to inadequate food, water, and sanitation facilities in transit camps, resulting in malnutrition, disease, and preventable deaths.

Day 1 - Arrival in Zambia
The journey has been challenging and tiring.
We arrived at heathrow airport with high spirits, (some slightly later than everyone else), and after a quick wait, we were boarding the plane to Addis Ababa.
Tumblr media
Many of us had never been to Africa before, and so we were all excited. We reclined into our seats and enjoyed movies, until we were served dinner at midnight while flying over the Mediterranean, and after we slept for a full two hours. Breakfast was at 4am, and was surprisingly tasty for so early in the morning.
The plane landed at 6am in Addis. Sadly, fog covered the windows, so our view of the city was limited. We stayed at the bustling airport for around 1.5 hours, some of the group enjoying the cafes there, others simply viewing the city. Our final flight to Ndola was 4 hours. There were no TVs, but the plane was much quieter than before, so some of us managed to get a bit more rest.
We arrived excited at Ndola’s small, but new and impressive airport. We went through passport control and after a slight visa delay and finding out that one of Dara’s bags had been left in Addis because the plane didn’t have enough space (he hopes he will get it soon!), we were through and ready for Zambia. We met and were welcomed to Zambia by the Beyond Ourselves team and then set off for our first stop - Nsobe Camp.
Leaving the airport, we took a small bus that led us through Ndola where we could get a first look at the people and culture of Zambia. We drove past the Chinese-funded stadium and saw many workshops and small markets. At a toll stop, a group of children hurried to the windows of the bus with water bottles and corn speared on pronged sticks which we enjoyed at around 25 cents each. We soon arrived at the Nsobe campsite and were amazed by the beauty and wilderness of the location. After going into our tents and sorting our luggage out, we quickly ventured out to explore the area. It didn’t take long to see chicken, monkeys and antelopes and the sunset was incredible.
Tumblr media
We got settled at the camp and played a bit of piggy in the middle. Following disastrous performances by the likes of Ka Lum and Paul, we waited for dinner, a choice of chicken, steak, or pork chops (all of which were exquisite). At 18:30 we all gathered in the reception for a motivational pep talk from Mr. Block et al. It was a relaxing evening as we got ready to eat some delicious food and some of us had a cat to keep us in good company. Having consumed our delicious chocolate cakes (with homemade ice cream) we were all tired after the long journey and ready for a delectable slumber.

New Visa-free travel policy in Kenya to encourage tourism SA included in the list
With the rise in outbound travel in Kenya, the government has included a large number of countries (including South Africa) on its visa-free travel list, ensuring a hassle-free experience.  Unsplash/Sergey Pesterev Recent studies anticipate a significant surge in travel in 2024. The previous year, Kenya had a 23% rise in international travel.  The GlobalData report for Kenya in 2023 determined that one of the top destinations for travellers was South Africa, among other neighbouring countries. This could lead to a significant boost in South African tourism with this visa-free policy initiated in Kenya. Take a look at the visa-free countries Kenyans can visit: Antigua and Barbuda Bahamas Barbados Benin Botswana British Virgin Islands Burundi Cayman Islands Congo (Dem. Rep.) Cook Islands Cuba Djibouti Dominica Eritrea eSwatini Ethiopia Fiji Ghana Grenada Haiti Hong Kong (SAR China) Indonesia Jamaica Kiribati Lesotho Madagascar Malawi Malaysia Mauritius Micronesia Montserrat Namibia Niue Panama Philippines Rwanda Senegal Singapore South Africa St. Kitts and Nevis St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tanzania The Gambia Trinidad and Tobago Uganda Vanuatu Zambia Zimbabwe VOA Bolivia Burkina Faso Cambodia Cape Verde Islands Comoro Islands Guinea-Bissau Iran Jordan Laos Macao (SAR China) Maldives Mali Mauritania Mozambique Nepal Nigeria Palau Islands Samoa Seychelles Sierra Leone Somalia South Sudan St. Lucia Sudan Timor-Leste Tuvalu Follow us on social media for more travel news, inspiration, and guides. Master mfaume, who heads the biggest kung fu temple in Tanzania, has become a social-media pin-up, with short films of himself and his students showing off their lightning moves. TikTok videos that display them whizzing along walls or fighting bullies in the suburbs of Dar es Salaam, the country’s biggest city, have won 184,000 likes. Master Mfaume says more and more Tanzanians want to study the sport. “People are starting to learn kung fu eagerly—and the number of students is going up a lot.”
Kung fu was brought to Africa in the 1970s by a shadowy Taiwanese figure known as Mr Ming. He popularised Bruce Lee’s martial arts, screening films in shabby township cinemas in South Africa, where audiences loved his message of opposition to white supremacy, cheering as he smashed a sign by a park in Shanghai that read “No Dogs and Chinese Allowed”.
Audiences and film-makers across the continent have since been turning kung fu into an African film genre. Nollywood has churned out many a low-budget kung fu title. Mayor Uguseba, also known as Mr Fantastic, a Nigerian who produced, directed and acted in “A Very Kung Fu Nollywood Movie: The Revenge of Sobei”,said he made the entire film for less than 50,000 naira ($34).
In a survey published in 2017 of Cameroonian cinephiles, 79% said they were interested in kung fu and 85% said films had drawn them to the sport. Kung fu clubs are opening across the continent, from Cape Town’s Shaolin Kung Fu Institute of South Africa to the Ten Tigers of Nile Chinese Wushu Kung-fu Training Club in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. Zambia recently hosted the first African Shaolin Kung Fu Games, with more than 150 fighters from 23 countries. And last November 107 fighters from Africa signed up for the World Wushu Championship in Texas, but few were granted visas.
Whereas South Korea has exported its pop culture to Africa, China has struggled to turn hard power into soft. But kung fu’s rise in Africa marks a rare victory for China on the sporting-cum-cultural front.
