thinking about Zae and how well the rivals to lovers route with Blane works for them on account of like... they’re lonely, and they crave affection to fill that void, because they’re a romantic in the sense that they think love is a cure-all for problems. “if I meet the right person, they’ll make me happy and I won’t have to worry anymore.” which is just. so not a great mindset to have, and Zae is aware of this to a degree but it also takes them a good while to finally admit that they need to work on themself, not hope that somebody else will fix them with love. but until that time comes, they want affection and love so much that they put their partners on a bit of a pedestal, and just plain ignore the other person having flaws until a messy breakup rolls around. there’s some black and white thinking there where their love life is concerned, and a tendency to fall for people who give them the time of day even if somebody else (Adair, for instance) can see that they really aren’t all that great.

Blane, though, they and Zae have been picking fights with each other for years. lol. rivals for a while until the events of the game, with some occasional “ugh they’re cute and eww why did I think that” thoughts. and by the time they start to get friendlier and let themselves fall for the other a bit more, it’s just... idk, they’ve known each other for a long time. they’ve gone from dislike and (unwanted) mutual attraction to being friendlier to genuinely knowing each other and falling in love, but still holding back because of their history together. a long and roundabout way of saying that Blane isn’t going to be somebody that Zae puts on a pedestal, but they will end up seeing the other for who they are and having a genuine connection. “I used to see you as just your flaws for the longest time, but now I see your good traits too and it’s leading a complete picture of you, and I do love the person I see”
