Friends finally sent me my shiny new Mobutu Munnus.

Zaïre- now the Democratic Republic of the Congo- was and still is an implausible basket case for all its size and wealth. Or maybe because of it. At this point, circa 1996 as the 1994 Rwandan Genocide's bloodletting spilled back over the border into Kivu and the Mobutu regime started to collapse, hyperinflation was catastrophic enough this would've bought you a decent lunch in Kinshasa's middle-classish areas

The official US Treasury rate for the time

in no way representative of the nation's economic reality in a state of permanent Low Batt

was 93,076 Nouveaux Zaïres to the US dollar.

Of course the truth is this currency barely was toilet paper. Its value wasn't subject to any kind of meaningful authority and the Zaïre Central Bank inhabited a waking dreamtime where still even they barely believed they were anything more than a slush fund for Mobutu's personal convenience.

The Soeurs ya Poids, those buxom broads full of gangster menace who controlled Kinshasa's informal Wall Street, dictated the nation's fiduciary reality. Currency was weighed by the stack and mostly in the 500,000 denomination they called the prostate because of the ailing Mobutu's malady

fine reflection for the rot that ravaged and ate away everything in the country from its bowels out.

The irony is as society stumbled and finally died, life relied on their honesty as compensation for the functional apatocracy the country had become. The world was an elaborate zero-gravity figment of spinning plates, threaded needles

and destined for catastrophe so huge it merits the full-fat pungency of a word like tragedy without its debased coinage.

This is a piece of history. And beautiful for all its ugly associations- like a Mauser rifle, like a chunk of trinitite.

First cap with France, 4th youngest player of France, the youngest since 1914.

He just scored! He's probably the youngest goalscorer of Les Bleus with that goal. Amazing. Sadly, he was injured while scoring his goal, a nasty tackle by the Gibraltar defender.
