A New Sorcerous Stabber Orphen Novel Series is in the Works
I found out from a Japanese Amazon review for “Comicron’s Plan” (the latest novel released since last December) that in the afterword of the novel, Yoshinobu Akita revealed that he is working on new Orphen books which will “fill the gaps” in the main series’ timeline with new stories. So far, it’s been stated that he has at least three volumes planned out. He hasn’t given the new series a name yet and is currently referring to it as the “Gap Edition”. I’m hoping that this series is the elusive “Part 3″, which details the adventures that Orphen and co has experienced through between the end of Part 2 and leading into Part 4.  Part 3 was only used as an overview in Part 4, so I’d be happy to see how Orphen and the others grow into the people they are by the time Mayor, Edge, Ratchet and Ratbane’s generation came around.
Glad to see that Akita-san is still coming up with new ideas to keep the Journey going!

Different versions of Bloody August
Lots of people have been complaining about the animation of the new Orphen anime and especially the design of Bloody August, the dragon that Azalie transforms into. So I thought it’d be fun to compile the different versions (Light novel, anime, manga) of the dragon and compare them!
Majutsushi Orphen Hagure tabi, Light Novel (1994)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The original story from which the animes and mangas are based on, with illustrations made by Yuuya Kusaka. This Bloody August is very chonky! Absolute unit!
Majutsushi Orphen Hagure tabi, Manga (1997)
Tumblr media
The first manga adaptation of the light novels, with art drawn by Hajime Sawada. This is the opposite of chonky! Probably the creepiest of all versions.
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, Anime (1999)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first anime adaptation, made by J.C.Staff, and the version that most people are familiar with. I’ve seen the first picture compared to the new anime adaptation alot and I’m not sure if I think it’s a fair representation of Bloody August’s design from the old anime. This dragon is actually rather chonky, just like in the light novel! However, the overall art direction and having her appear in the dark instead of broad light makes her alot more intimidating.
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Heed My Call, Beast!, Manga (2017)
Tumblr media
Tiddie Dragon! From the new manga, drawn by Muraji. No more chonk, this dragon has hit the gym! ... And has tiddies. It’s difficult not to notice the tiddies.
Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi, Anime, (2020)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everyone’s biggest disapointment. From the new anime made by Studio Deen. Another chonky dragon, but this one looks rather fresh. In the end, it resembles the one from the light novel, but slightly more updated. Not as intimidating as the others, however.

Majutsushi Orphen Haguretabi episode 2
Tumblr media
mood of the day: STOP BULLYING MY BABY BOY poor guy already has enough shit to deal with five years later
No, but... I loved all the pre-Orphen stuff, it was not only super funny, but also served as a great introduction to these characters considering the old anime not only didn’t have much in terms of flashbacks, it also made Childman’s class look much more peaceful than these seven weirdos actually are. It’s especially obvious with Kiriranshero/Orphen, who the ‘98 anime mostly showed as a cute little goody-two-shoes when in reality he’s just as prone to trouble as the rest of them (though he’s still too nice for his own good a lot of the time, as we have seen). Well, that, and the other stuff about him that probably won’t be revealed until a while later. Anyway, we had so much Komikron-food, which made me so happy because I love this boy so much. Some followers might in fact know me as “Komi”, and guess where that comes from, haha
The whole chess analogy in the conversation between Orphen and Childman was also pretty interesting. While at first it looked like a simple black vs white dichotomy representing the two types of magic, it quickly becomes something deeper when Childman has his own black magic using men represented by black pawns. This essentially makes them cannon fodder - not necessarily to him, maybe, but definitely to the Tower. The people participating in this hunt, be it Heartia, Komikron, and even Childman himself in a way, are literal pawns to the Tower of Fangs. Granted, it’s a rather simple bout of symbolism, but it works well, I think.
Also, I can never get over Komikron’s terrible haircut in the present day fdgfdgf Or the weird-ass hand and arm movements they keep giving people when they’re using their magic. Yes, it’s got more motion, but it looks absolutely goofy. Just do what most anime and games do with magic users (without tomes or staffs or whatever) and let them wave their hands just a little bit. That’s enough, I don’t think Orphen needs to look like a freaking Airbender.
Anyway, I think this is all I have to say about this episode. I know it doesn’t look like much, but I once again had a blast, especially with the pre-Orphen stuff, because I’ve always loved pre-Orphen so much and seeing it animated is just an absolute delight. And I also already know that one of the coming episodes will destroy me because I know what’s going to happen :’>
I also wrote up a short analysis of the differences between one of the illustration-remakes used in the ending and its original by Kusaka Yuuya, so maybe I’ll upload that in the following days. If anyone’s interested, that is.

Orphen and Slayers
I’ve decided to ramble a bit since I’m still experiencing a euphoric spaz-fest over the fact that J-Novel currently owns and is translating the original novel series of two of my favorite 90′s anime .  This is especially appreciated in regards to Orphen since I knew next to nothing about the novel’s depiction of events(unlike Slayers), only that the anime completely diverges from the source material in a manner similar to FMA vs FMA:Brotherhood from the near beginning. And the only reason I even know that is thanks to Orphenpedia(a Japanese Orphen wiki) and what little Japanese that I can understand.   But what really gets my interest is the fact both Slayers and Orphen have crossed over and unlike most LN/manga crossovers, this is considered a canonical event that actually takes place by both Yoshinobu Akita and Hajime Kanzaka.  I even tweeted on the former’s Twitter account recently to confirm it for myself.  So, I honestly can’t wait to see J-Novel translate it into English and see what it’s all about it. What little I know about it is:
1.Timeline-wise, it takes place during the Reckless series for Orphen(Reckless Journey is a 13-volume prequel series that takes place six months before Wayward Journey/the main series and Orphen was traveling with a different party at the time), while in Slayers’ case, this is around the time of Lina and the others were dealing with Gaav and Phibrizzo, but before Gourry was captured and lost the SoL.
2. A God transports both heroes outside of their respective universe and into his private dimension, which is an impressive feat considering how Slayers’ cosmology works.
3. Naga appears and finds an equal (and possible romantic interest) in Keith Royal, who is Orphen’s equivalent to Naga and Xellos. You can imagine how thrilled Lina and Orphen were about that:
Tumblr media
In any case, I honestly just want to see how Orphen and Lina will get along without killing each other, given their sardonic personalities and violent tempers. It’s just a shame that Orphen wasn’t with Majic and Claiomh in the crossover since I imagine that Claiomh and Lina would’ve become good friends and even Rui Araizumi seems to think so:
Tumblr media
(Also, yes, I ship the crap out of Orphen x Claiomh/Cleao almost as much as I do Gourrina)

#orphen #anime #retroact #retroactBlue

Orphen ep. 1 is here!
So I just finished watching the first episode for the new anime, but I don’t really have the time right now to write an analysis or opinion piece or whatever, so just some quick notes
- animation is... eh. Didn’t expect much from it considering the trailers and character artwork were already wonky but as someone who’s used to better things it’s kinda hard to watch. Idk, maybe as a Studio Bones fan I’m just hopelessly spoilt or something. Did have some nice shots though and I do really like the backgrounds
- I still had a blast, however. Orphen never ceases to be a great series and this episode had Akita-sensei’s comedic timing down to a T and perfectly translated it into an animated medium. Hell, if I’m not mistaken some (or even more) sentences are directly lifted from the book
- I was surprised to see the friendship(?) between Childman and Cleaohm’s father mentioned here, since I don’t think it came up that early in the original book. Personally, I only found out about it from one of the encyclopedias back in the day and the anime just goes and... throws it right onto the table lol
- it was interesting to see a surprise cameo from Coggie (or... not so surprise considering it was spoilt on twitter some days ago lol), though it makes me wonder if there’ll come more out of that. I kinda hope so because I love Coggie to death, but I doubt it, especially once the gang leaves Totokanta.
- I still can’t believe Byleth and Majic have the same seiyuu, they sound like polar opposites to each other lol (the Heartia/Ferdinand thing though... yeah, it’s definitely there haha)
- not a fan of the opening song (even though it’s by Shou himself...) but the ending is really lovely and the actual soundtrack also had a few cool pieces already
- it’s nice that they replicated so many of Kusaka Yuuya’s iconic illustrations, but the quality reaaally varies between what they did with them, geez. At least the important ones (i.e. things with Komikron and/or Heartia) are fine lol
Soo... should I write something more coherent later? Or just do it in this style for the other episodes too? Or does no one care at all and I’m just wasting my time lol
PS: there are hardly any spoilers involved for myself but everything I could see as spoilers for other people I will tag, no worries
