There had clearly been something wrong the day her hibernation pod opened up.  They were supposed to be fail-safe.  Nothing could go wrong on this ship.  That’s what they said.  In Kate’s experience, there was always SOMETHING that could go wrong.  And boy, go wrong it did.  

She had found herself to be the only one awake.  No crew.  No passengers.  Just her.  The ship was on autopilot, bound for Homestead II... and she had 90 more years to go.  She wouldn’t die by then.  In fact, she’d still look fairly young compared to most everyone else.  Her mutation granted her that... but awake and alone for 90 years?  Kate liked her solitude, but that was well past even her limit.

On top of it, there was no reason her pod should have opened.  She’d found a broken down bot just the other day.  Though the two incidents would seem unrelated to most people... Kate knew better.  Her instincts told her something was wrong... very wrong, well beyond the fact that she was awake and no one else was.  

After she had found the X-Men, she rejoined modern society.  It also meant spending time with Kitty Pryde who updated her on all the tech that had come about while Kate was out wandering the wilderness, so accessing the passenger log came easy.  Mechanics on the other hand?  She could change a tire and oil in a car... but she was no spaceship mechanic and the Avalon was not a ship for beginners.  

That was why she had woken him up.  Quill.  Peter.  He was originally from Earth and had an extensive background with mechanics of ships like the Avalon.  Kate would be stealing his life.  She had no way of putting him or herself back to sleep.  But there were thousands of other passengers on this ship and if something was terribly wrong like her gut told her it was... she couldn’t let everyone die.  Wasn’t that what superheroes were supposed to do?
