Excuse me, why are they so beautiful?
Toto Isshiki actor Yutaka Nozaki posted this pic with this caption:
Osaka performance opening day has successfully concluded✨
Together with Hisui-san (Suzuki as Kawasemi-san) and Yamane-san (Daichi Nakashima) 📸 I am truly grateful to both of them for always watching over me kindly✨
Tomorrow is the final performance. I will give it my all!
Their performances in Tokyo and Osaka are going to be included on the blu-ray that can be preordered now. Benefits include a Bromide set of the characters, a making off and a booklet.
Honestly, the s&h fee is a bit too much.

Ring (1998)
I enjoy comparing original films to their remakes. 90% of the time, the original proves itself the superior film but seeing the same story done by a different set of hands is exciting. In theory, the remake is an opportunity to polish away the blemishes, set up the sequel(s) no one knew was coming, give the standout character more time to shine, etc. I saw 2002’s The Ring by Gore Verbinski before Ring (also known as Ringu), so this was an interesting experiment. This horror film starts with a great premise. This 1998 film is scary and takes some unexpected turns, culminating in a terrific ending. You can immediately see why it was remade by Hollywood four years later - but is it the superior movie? After her niece’s mysterious death, journalist Reiko Askawa (Nanako Matsushima) investigates an urban legend about a videotape that supposedly kills anyone who watches it. First, you get a phone call, then, one week later, you die. Thinking nothing of it, Reiko watches the tape. After receiving the ominous phone call, she reaches out to her ex-husband, Ryūji (Hiroyuki Sanada). They search for the video's origins, hoping it can save Reiko from the vengeful spirit it unleashes. One of the film’s big strengths is the killer recording. Before the tape, you see the curse's end results: the victims and their twisted faces. You're curious, so you watch along with Reiko. At that point, your heart sinks. It’s a series of black-and-white, disjointed scenes that concludes with a shot of a well and a screeching sound. "Weird" is an understatement. Where do you even start? Keep in mind, Reiko had to track down the tape in some cabin where its victims stayed a week ago and everyone who’s already seen it is dead. Making things even more dire is that she catches her young son (Rikiya Ōtaka) watching the video one night. Now, if she fails to decrypt this mystery, he'll die too. The thing with horror films like this is that you want to see what happens, but your instinct tells you to run away. The "danger" is engaging, which makes Ringu a fun enigma. You could ever solve where it came from yourself but you're eager to find answers. Like Reiko and Ryūji, you’re scrutinizing every frame of that tape. Are the contents metaphorical? Is it real footage? Could the people we see be real, but the images be fake? The unique thing about Ringu is that while each clue might bring us closer to the finish line, it doesn’t feel like it’s getting any easier. The more clues we gather, the spookier things become. You know what’s happening is fiction, but there’s a small part of you that can’t help thinking you shouldn’t be watching. If you suddenly received a phone call midway, you'd jump out of your skin.
The biggest difference between Ringu and The Ring is the curse's rules. In some ways, it’s clever. In other ways, it feels like a bit of a cheat. Without revealing too much, the key to solving the mystery in Ringu depends heavily on Ryūji’s psychic visions. With no supernatural abilities, it would be impossible to figure everything out so Reiko’s niece and her friends never had a chance. In a way, that explains why the thing is an urban legend. You only get the phone call under certain circumstances and receiving the phone call doesn't mean you get those much-needed visions - only psychics get those. This means most people would watch the video, go “Well, that was weird” and then die a week later for reasons no one could figure out. The tape is so obscure it would take a long time to make the connection. That makes it feel like a "real" urban legend. The downside is that it makes the scenario feel a tad convoluted. We're asked to believe in 1) cursed videotapes, 2) ghosts and 3) psychic powers. While these do come together during the conclusion, it’s still removed from reality by one more level than the Gore Verbinski film. It also feels much more Japanese than the American version, which is neither a good nor a bad thing, but worth mentioning. This might be controversial, but I like the simplified horror of the American remake better.
I say 2002’s The Ring is an improvement over the original for several reasons, the biggest of which being that the story feels much more universal and its mechanics are less complicated. Don't let that discourage you from viewing Ringu. It’s a more subdued, stranger-feeling horror movie that’s steeped in Japanese culture. It’s also scary and memorable, with a great premise and scares that will stick with you. (Original Japanese version with English subtitles, June 7, 2023)

Detective Conan #264 - #265 : Courtroom Confrontation: Kisaki vs. Kogoro (TV Anime Original)
Screenplay : 金子裕 Yutaka Kaneko
Storyboard :小林孝嗣 Takatsugu Kobayashi (#264) - 三家本泰美 Yasumi Mikamoto (#265)
Episode Director : 鈴木吉男 Yoshio Suzuki (#264) - 伊藤真朱 Mashu Itou (#265)
Animation Director : 青野厚司 Atsushi Aono (#264) - 平岡正幸 Masayuki Hiraoka (#265)
The Courtroom Confrontation Series is the best thing that ever happened to the Detective Conan anime. Each episode of this mini-series has its own unique atmosphere, distinct from the others. It's a shame there aren't more of this kind of mini-series.
In these two episodes, the artists clearly stand out from those the series usually relies on, especially the storyboarders. This isn’t the usual staff rotation, and it’s always refreshing to see new names making their mark. In terms of photography/cel compositing and animation, two approaches stand out : on one hand, a focus on 'realism', and on the other, an emphasis on showcasing the strengths of the color palette. For example, the striking contrast between the bright glowing yellow and Eri’s purple clothes, especially in enclosed spaces, creates a strong visual presence.
Another clever use of this same effect to intensify the drama this time : close up shots, dark backgrounds to make the face stand out, and the reflection of the light source on the glasses.
I really like how the night is depicted in the two episodes, with a sort of washed-out gray-blue palette that fits the ongoing story perfectly. It highlights the restaurants and signs, creating a calm and elegant atmosphere thanks to the soft light sources. It's neither too dark for the night nor too blue. It's more of a 'realistic night' than the usual flashy one.
Speaking of 'realism', I’m also referring to the drawings. Masayuki Hiraoka's corrections in #265 are much sharper and more defined compared to Aono's in #264, whose style is softer and rounder. though, his latest drawing style in Conan, there’s a bit less roundness compared to the earlier days. I would have loved to have Hiraoka as the Animation Director for both of these episodes instead of just one to strengthen what I mentioned earlier. Eri's drawings by Hiraoka are stunning, some of the finest in the anime. His shading style, (and the shape of Eri's hair strands, not always uniform like Aono's for exemple), made him suited for the 'realistic' style in Conan.
Eri by Atsushi Aono, the Animation Director in #264 and the comparison between him and Masayuki Hiraoka.
There are many interesting layouts. The artists put in a lot of effort and the attention to detail is remarkable. Eri's office interior for exemple, with the detailed background art that effectively conveys the composition of the room without venturing into something overly "spacious."
Or the Mimasu restaurant interior :

Last week was utter hell, with a new class, a new schedule, and my sleep going out of whack. I'm still trying to readjust, and let me explain why I'm mentioning all of this. Almost nothing would have motivated me to get out of my zone and type this post except for Frieren. Frieren is one of my favorite manga series. If you've talked to me about anime/manga before, you would know this. So, ever since it was announced, it has been one of my most anticipated series. To add to that, Keiichirou Saitou was announced as the director. He's a great example of an upcoming new-gen director who has excelled in everything he's been a part of. From the beautiful and abstract EDs he created for The Executioner and Her Way of Life or Boogiepop, to the mesmerizing, dreamlike episodes he directed for Sonny Boy, and the expressive, now very popular Bocchi the Rock. He was a perfect choice as a director for a series like this, and let me tell you, he delivered fully.
Just from a quick glance, you can see how the show looks. Everything is eye-catching, making it almost hard to focus on one particular element because they all just look so good, and no, it's not just the chromatic aberration causing the lack of focus. The various departments responsible for compositing, the background, and the overall color design have done an outstanding job, creating a beautiful and cohesive piece of art. Seeing someone you might consider a less experienced director pulling off such a complete and harmonious experience is incredible. In terms of design, the whole show is aesthetically pleasing. It's not the experimental work you saw in Sonny Boy; it's going in a totally different direction, like a beautiful painting that should be framed on a wall.
It works very well when paired with, you know, how Frieren is as a story. The fantasy world they are in isn't an extremely unique one. You've seen it before; it's fairly typical in that sense. But that's not truly the point. The main focus is showing the day-to-day or year-to-year life of this immortal elf girl, Frieren, and how she views time, how she remembers her past. It's not an incredibly grand adventure, but with the small lens we have on these characters, it feels like a cherished moment, something that should be captured in a photo or painting. It's beautiful in a very simple way. It's not a series made for extremely large moments, I think Frieren has always been focused on a simpler view of life, much like a painting. The smaller details of such a straightforward approach are highlighted so well. The trees in the environment, the squirrels just moving around—there's so much life in each scene. It really all comes together for me like a piece of art.
The consistency lasts through all four episodes, and the staff distribution also seems fairly good, so I expect this to continue throughout the two cours. The pacing itself is perfect. I've really enjoyed how the story has been adapted to animation so far. I believe that nowadays, many anime series have fallen into the pitfalls of adapting things too quickly to capture the interest of newer viewers early on. However, the series composition for Frieren here is excellent.
This writeup might have been shorter than most people were expecting considering how amazing the anime adaptation is and how much I love the source material, but what can really be said about except just praising? I feel like even if you don't like the source material, the anime's execution is almost undeniably good. Additionally, as I said this past week has not been kind to me so my energy is a bit drained, at first I was planning to be more specific in my write up and make points more adhering to the specifics of each episode, but I didn't really have time for that. However, I will do my best to cover every Frieren episode weekly from now on. Make no mistake this is going to be my favorite series from this year.

Ash-ra
So I've annoyed all of my friends by going on and on about this band to the point where no one is answering my emails any more. So I'm just going to be spamming this tag until all of Tumblr blocks me (no, really - if I irritate you, I'd much rather you just block me and go on with your online life!) Buckle up, I'm going in.
youtube
When I first found started exploring Buck-Tick, this was one of the first songs I clicked on, just based on the title alone. It's called Ash-ra*, off an album literally entitled COSMOS - do you think there's a chance there might be some Kosmische Krautrock going on here?
*I've since seen some blogs express confusion as to why the title uses this spelling, rather than the Japanese Asura or Ashura. ASH-RA TEMPEL. Lords of Berlin-School Kosmische (Kosmische - "Cosmic" - is what many of the actual German groups of the time called the music that we British jokingly called "Krautrock") led by chess-board pattern loving Meister of electronic guitar manipulation, Manuel Göttsching.
I hit play.
::drums start up::
YES OH GOD YES - Toll immediately goes in for the most Lange-Gerade MOTORIK. This isn't even Dinger-beat, this is the full Jaki Liebezeit, like Mother Sky on speed.
12 seconds in, and there's strange slithering static noises, like the glitchy tape experiments on the B-side of NEU! 2 - yes YES! The tiger is OUT!
And then the guitar starts
Effortless, weightless, just hanging above the driving rhythm section like a seagull riding a glider. This is pure Michael Rother, that endless tone that seems to stretch off into the horizon, a descending scale that dissipates into feathery clouds of... feedback? tremolo arm abuse? theremin? processed guitar? (In the live video, it looks like some kind of harmonics-modulation pedal)
Words cannot even express how much I love the way Imai Hisashi abuses his guitar. This man is a sound pervert - I've since read translated interviews where he expresses contempt that a guitarist should act like a guitar-player - he treats the instrument purely as a tone-generator for him to transform with electronic treatments and manipulations (my favourite musicians have always treated their instruments this way - from what Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk did with his flute, to what drone-rockers like Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3 and Kevin Shields of MBV did with guitars). But the cosmic space-noises here are so otherworldly I genuinely cannot tell where guitar feedback ends and theremin begins, it's a haze of swooping electronic bliss.
Vocals - to be really true to the Kosmische form, Imai should have had the courage to just spout surreal English-Japanese-German word salad a la Damo Suzuki, but yes, there are lyrics, I'm sure someone else has written about them. But in my fan-fiction headcanon version of events, Imai just scribbled "Ash-ra" on the demo tape to indicate this was his Krautrock song, and Atsushi, not knowing the first thing about Krautrock, took this as an instruction to write a song about the actual Japanese Demons.
1:50 minutes in. BASS SOLO. At some point, I'm going to write another essay about how Yutaka is the most underrated musician of this band. He's the one who holds together the floating psychedelic guitar haze and the speed-punk drums, and yet somehow makes it all insanely danceable. He absolutely nails the sinewy funk of Holger Czukay, both melodic and booty-shaking.
And then at 2:04 the BEST BIT of the WHOLE SONG
PNEUMATIC DRILL SOLO!!!
Unfortunately, it seems they don't do this bit live. COWARDS!
REAL German Experimental bands play their drills live!
But it's the attention to detail that makes this band so intoxicating to listen to - layers and layers of sonic references layered on top of one another, the pneumatic drill, the squiggles of electronic sound, and then at the end, the coda...
A short drifting suite of classical piano, because it's the moments of peace that make the psychedelic noise-storms so intense, and vice-versa.

*Regular Speaker: Tatsuki Miyazawa (Red), Suzuki Suzu (Orange), Kohei Azano (Green)
In this time talking, we had the additional information about the event on 13th May, it will be held as the anniversary of KRK novel issued, however they will have a plan to talk not only about KRK, also trough the whole series and characters.
Recent state with Mr. Nakanishi of KING RECORD was also shared, they exchanged the opinion of going on their collaboration even K series as in the past, or coming "AYAKA", and from now on what they would be going to create. So Miyazawa-san asked fans to keep watching what GoRA would work about if you should still have an interest for us, since we have already had the connection trough "K". (Not forced to do so, but they feel happy to be as it.)
Review for the stories updated last time;
KOY 12 It was planned its plot by Miyazawa-san(Red), but he asked Rairaku-san(Pink) to polish up the end of this story because he believed she would write a good ending better then him. Actually Rairaku-san picked up short episode like as Tamaki, summarized and connected their future, Miyazawa-san satisfied of it. Regarding the core theme of KOY, everybody have a question "What they and the world are going after the slate destroyed", so after discussing in GoRA and it was aggregated into like as episode 12. On the other, Miyazawa-san personally asked Rairaku-san to insert the episode that Shattenreich moored to Mihashira Tower then after released, he thought it would be a good symbolism for a linkage of the airship (and Shiro) on the ground in the end. Azano-san(Green) felt fun in the episode of Samukawa who became the most outstanding one without expectation, also Anna's setting became abundance like as junior high school girl with mysterious atmosphere and was visited as advisor from the secretary of the Agency of Supernatural Powers who was guarded SP. Also Miyazawa-san satisfied Munakata's own decision of leading the world same as Shiro, expected Yukari and Sukuna would play some active parts in the world.
SIDE:GOLD 03 Azano-san told the point of interesting that there were no discomfort setting otherwise in the different era and characters of Red and Blue kings, resemble pattern of collision were still (but they were first generation) between them. About Red king, Yutaka was not gloomy but had a suicidal destruction idea from Kamikaze survivor's regret deeply inside of him, for this thoughtful setting which Takahashi-san(Black) made was really convincing. About Ootono Benji, Azano-san was impressed with that move of none extraordinal appearance setting of "Gray" king itself. Most of authors have a tendency that "king" will set with outstanding figure or character, but in this case, Takahashi-san didn't do that. Azano-san pointed it was quite interesting and looking forward to. Instead of the series name of "SIDE:GOLD", no turn of Kokujoji is curious matter, he added the comment.
Regarding SIDE:GOLD itself, Takahashi-san shared the outline of the story to the other members, however it haven't been finished writing of those details. Nobody knows how much its progress as of section 03 (lol). Azano-san and Suzuki-san(Orange) guess maybe it is still on early stage. As like this, they can't see the future (lol), Takahasi-san also afraid of being forsaken from K fans, according to Suzuki-san reported. So they will be happy and welcome of fans impression or thoughts message posting through on Twitter or ODAIBAKO. Azano-san continued as follows. "This one year, the reason of that 10th anniversary project has been able to continue is the fans expectation and requests, their reply with joy. You fans' responses gave us will allow to continue this activity. We also have the idea of stories in mind (nobody expected), but it is not all for our motive. Especially K series, the fans react quite powerful (lol), we also become greedy! We thanks to all K fans."
From Miyazawa-san, the information of K series would be announced continuously on Note.com and Twitter. And we would be able to meet you on the event in May, asked to be looking forward it.
